red red wine One of the world’s best loved reggae bands, UB40, is heading to Gibbston’s Waitiri Creek Winery next week as part of their aptly named Red Red Wine Vineyard Tour – and Ali Campbell, Astro and Mickey Virtue will all be there.

The original line-up of UB40 with Ali, Astro and Mickey enjoyed huge success over three decades from 1979 to 2008, with multiple gold- and platinum-selling albums, Grammy nominations, four worldwide number-one singles and over 70 million in sales. Their chart hits include ‘Red Red Wine’, ‘Cherry Oh Baby’, ‘Kingston Town’, ‘(I Can’t Help) Falling In Love With You’, ‘I Got You Babe’… and many many more.

After taking a break for a while, the band are again taking their smooth yet rootsy blend around the world with live performances that never fail to uplift the audience. Lead singer Ali Campbell is looking forward to something different from the big stadium gigs.

‘We love coming to New Zealand and have always wanted to play in the more intimate vineyard settings. We can’t wait to finally do it this summer!’

girls’ cricket At the end of November Arrowtown School’s girls’ cricket team travelled to NZ Cricket’s High Performance Centre at Lincoln University to represent Otago in the NZ Post Shield. They ended up fourth,’ says coach Paul Winders, ‘which was pretty good effort considering they were playing big intermediate schools from around the country.’

councillor comment Arrowtown ward councillor Scott Stevens with this new year update: Here’s an interesting statistic for you. Of the 1500 properties in Arrowtown, 938 or 61% have owners living outside of Arrowtown. That is a large number of holiday homes that have been filled up over the Christmas/New Year break putting the village under enormous pressure when you factor in all the day visitors as well.

I would like to extend a thank-you to the council staff and contractors who dealt with call outs over the holiday break and to our local population, the minority 39% of property owners and those renting in Arrowtown for your understanding and generosity sharing your space with so many more people.

donation theft Martin Barrett tells us that sadly someone has stolen the Arrowtown Village Association donation box from the Bush Creek track junction. The box was there to help pay for the maintenance of the Sawpit Gully Track, but between 1 and 8 December someone removed it and its cash contents. ‘It is a heavy steel tube 250 mm in diameter and with a padlocked lid,’ says Martin. ‘It is painted blue and has a slot for the money.’ The theft has been reported to the police, but should you come across the donation box, please contact either the police or the Arrowtown Village Association on 409 8688.

And the timing couldn’t have been better – it went up just before the Year 8 graduation ceremony.
