flower show Jean Britton reports the Spring Flower Show was a success. The standard in the daffodil and cut flower sections was high considering the hot windy weather. The supper room was alive with colour from outstanding entries by junior primary pupils and preschoolers. Gardener and floral artist Noelene Horrell was the guest speaker. The only disappointment was that entries were well down in the craft and baking sections. A small group of volunteers ensures the show survives, and this year’s proceeds will go towards the beautification of the village centre. arrowtown library – have your say Are you a regular user of the Arrowtown Library? Queenstown Lakes District Council wants to hear from you so it can be sure the library continues to meet the community’s needs. One subject up for discussion is the hours – over the past year QLDC has already changed opening hours at the Queenstown, Wanaka and Kingston libraries as a result of community feedback. Are the opening hours working for you? Currently, Arrowtown Library is open Monday to Friday 10 am to 5 pm and Saturday 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. How does this suit you? Is it open too much or not enough? Or perhaps you’d like a late night? QLDC says more community space could be created at Arrowtown Library within the existing floor plan. But the question is, what should go in that space? What do you think? Would you like to see more books? More study space? More computers? A meeting space? fire brigade honours Year-round, the members of Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade serve their community by fighting fires, attending motor vehicle collisions and helping St John with medical calls. And each October they gather together to mark another year of service at their honours night. With no major medals like Gold Stars to be awarded, this year’s honours night was a relatively small affair held at the fire station. Current brigade members and their partners were joined by life members, representatives from Queenstown and Frankton brigades, the Otago Rural Fire Authority and the New Zealand Fire Service. The most significant honours were bars to the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, marking exemplary service by Lee-Roy Mullings (21 years) and Garry Hall (28 years). The other big award was Firefighter of the Year, which went to Sue Fussell in recognition of her hard work and commitment to the brigade.

Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade will be celebrating Guy Fawkes in colourful, noisy style on November 6 thanks to the generous support of local businesses. In past years the fire brigade has let off fireworks paid for by the brigade members themselves. This year is going to be bigger and better than ever, with Patagonia Chocolates, Base Contracting, Chard Farm, the Jade & Opal Factory and the Fork & Tap also chipping in to make sure the fireworks are high in quality and high in number. This year’s fireworks night is Friday November 6, the night after Guy Fawkes itself, so that parents don’t have to worry about getting tired grumpy kids up for school the next day. Everyone’s welcome at nightfall at Millbrook Corner, access off Malaghans Road.

This fantastic half-day trip takes you to a historic location. Walk or ride up the Arrow River towards Macetown along the walking track (or 4WD up the road). When you reach the vertical irrigation ventilation pipe follow the 4WD track down to river. Heading upstream two river crossings will take you to Scoles Tunnel, built in about 1892. Can you work out why it was built? Why is the rock above the tunnel like big slabs (beware of rockfall around the mouth of the cave). trolley derby It’s not too late to get your entry in for the Arrowtown Trolley Derby, says event organiser Anton Schmitz. On 28 November gravity-powered trolleys will race from the cemetery to Butler’s Green and one of them could be yours. If you’re building a trolley from scratch, time’s getting a bit tight, but Anton says he can help out with a supply of wheels he has to hand. 100 g flaked almonds 100 g choc chips 200 g flour 240 g egg whites 200 g caster sugar Preheat oven to 150°C. Mix the almonds, choc chips and flour together. Whisk the whites and sugar together till they form soft peaks, then fold in the dry mix. Fill a piping bag without a nozzle in the end. Pipe two rectangles the length of a baking paper-lined baking tray, using side-to-side movements when piping. Bake until light brown and slightly firm in the centre. Leave to cool and wrap in cling film. Ideally freeze to firm up, then slice into thin wafers and place on tray with paper again and dry out in oven at 120°C for about 25 minutes. Perfect with a cuppa. Vary the flavour by changing the nuts and the choc with dried fruit. 10
