enior families and friends honored their seniors as they dazzled and sparkled on stage during Senior Celebration on Sunday, Feb. 9, at Mickey Melton Auditorium. Congratulations to our seniors!

Longview grad rates rank among highest in region A state report shows that Longview ISD continues to have a strong commitment to seeing students succeed.

The Texas Education Agency released the Texas Academic Performance Reports for 2018-19. The data from these reports show the 2017-18 data for four-year graduation rate, five-year graduation rate, attendance and dropout rates from Longview High School and Longview Early Graduation High School. LHS not only exceeded the state percentages but the Region VII percentages as well and Early Grad has seen huge improvements.

• Four-year graduation rate for Texas 2017-18 was 90 percent, Region VII was 93.3 percent, LHS was 97.5 percent and Longview Early Grad was 88.4 percent (a 6.5 percent increase over 2016-17 for Early Grad).

Yes, I know what I am proposing may seem a bit outlandish. However, since our job is to prepare our students to be successful now, and in the future, we need to create environments that are more like a coffeeshop and less like a prison.

As we partner with our students to help them accomplish their goals, rather than waiting for them to make a mistake, I believe we will see greater engagement because they know we care and we are giving them the grace and space to maximize their interests, aptitudes, and ideas.

Does studying student data really raise test scores?

By Heather C. Hill Education Week Question: What activity is done by most teachers in the United States, but has almost no evidence of effectiveness in raising student test scores?

Answer: Analyzing student assessment data.

This practice arose from a simple logic: To improve student outcomes, teachers should study students’ prior test performance, learn what students struggle with, and then adjust the curriculum or offer students remediation where necessary.

Yet understanding students’ weaknesses is only useful if it changes practice. And, to date, evidence suggests that it does not change practice—or student outcomes. Focusing on the problem has likely distracted us from focusing on the solution.

With the birth of large-scale state assessments and widening data availability in the 1990s, school leaders and teachers could access information on student performance that was common

A led by Jonathan A. Supovitz and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania, examined the Ongoing Assessment Project, a program that helps teachers create assessments and examine the results, then combines this practice with professional development focused on mathematics content and student thinking about that content. Both of these studies saw positive impacts, suggesting that the analysis of data can, when combined with strong supports for improved teaching, shift student outcomes.

The fact remains that having teachers themselves examine test-score data has yet to be proven productive, even after many trials of such programs.

Board of Trustees set election for May 2 Longview ISD trustees approved setting an election for Place 2 and Place 4 on May 2nd during their regular meeting Monday night.

Terms for Place 2 trustee Ava Welge and Place 4 trustee Ginia Northcutt are expiring, with both members planning to run for re-election. Longview ISD trustees are elected to serve three-year terms.

The final day to file for a place on the general election ballot was Feb. 14. Early voting begins April 20 and continues through April 28. Election day is May 2nd.

Kriebel brings the fun to mathematics at Judson Samuel Kriebel, an 8th grade math teacher at Judson is from Brookston, Indiana.

He graduated recently from LeTourneau with a degree in Mathematics Education and a teaching certification in 4-8 Mathematics. He’s motivated by the opportunity to give all students the same leadership he saw in his teachers growing up.

Busy few weeks for Lobo welding teams It has been a busy two weeks for our Longview HS CTE Welding Competition Teams. On Friday, Jan. 31, at a competition at Angelina College three of these young men placed in the top 10.

The competitors were: Ronaldo Almazan (2nd), Jorge Rebollar (5th), Jacob Marshall (6th), Jason McCauley and Carlos Ramirez.

Fast forward a week and the Welding Competition Team competed at the SkillsUSA Welding Competition. All student qualify to

compete at State in April. Wonderful job, everyone! Keep it up!

District seeks applicants for $1,000 ‘Voice’ scholarship Applications for the 2020 Voice Scholarship are now available from the LISD Community Relations Department.

The Longview Voice is a district-wide newspaper that covers student, staff, and local community news. The paper is produced by the LISD Community Relations department in partnership with the Thrifty Nickel, as well as campus staff and volunteers.

Each year the Community Relations de-

partment selects a Longview High School senior student who contributes work to The Longview Voice for a scholarship to the school of their choice.

To qualify a student must submit a news article, op-ed column, or photo to be published in any edition of The Longview Voice newspaper, and fill out an application to be considered.

UP IN THE AIR Boys, Girls basketball beat out Mesquite

Rainy start to baseball season The start of the baseball and softball training has been mired by rainy weather, but the teams are still eager to take to the field and show their Lobo spirit!

Washed out for their scrimmage Monday, Feb. 10, the baseball team was set to play against Kilgore on Monday, Feb. 17, at home. followed by a game at rusk on Friday, Feb. 21 “(Our) scrimmages have gone fairly well,” said baseball coach James Goldman. “Our pitching and defense have been good.”

They will be taking part in the Whitehouse Tournament, Feb. 27-29.

Lady Lobo Softball were set to travel to Kilgore for a scrimmage on Friday, Feb. 14. Varsity played against Bishop Lynch on Saturday, Feb. 15, in Dallas. They won, 7-1.

Varsity and JV are competing in the Lady Lobo Classic from Feb. 20-22.

oys basketball dominated Tyler Lee, 82-50, on Lobo Senior Night, Feb. 7. They followed that up by defeating Mesquite, 56-46, on Tuesday, Feb. 11, in Mesquite. They travelled to Rockwall, losing 54-42.

Lady Lobos also defeated Mesquite, 55-45, on Tuesday, Feb. 11, on Longview turf. This left them tied for fourth place in the standings along with Rockwall Heath. They played against Rockwall Heath in Athens on Friday, Feb. 14. This marks the third time the two teams have competed since becoming district teammates in 2012-13. Heath beat the Lady Lobos in the first match up, 49-31, but made a come back when they won the second match, 38-36, in Heath. Lady Lobos ended up with a loss in Athens, 53-44.

Next up, they competed against Tyler Lee at home on Friday, Feb. 14, winning 2-1. They were then set to take on Mesquite at home on Tuesday, Feb. 18. Their next game is Friday, Feb. 21, at home

Bramlette students work on their green thumb Bramlette students have worked with Master Gardeners on Wednesday, Jan. 15, through the Learn, Grow, Eat, GO initiative.

“Our student’s journey began early October,” said Yolanda Juarez, Bramlette 3rd grade teacher.

Students were tasked with the upkeep of their gardens by watering and pulling the weeds.

“Students were super excited to pick their vegetables with our master gardener,” Juarez said.

The students had the opportunity to taste each vegetable

planted in the garden. One of the parent chefs cooked a gourmet spinach dish. LGEG grows knowledge through an interdisciplinary program combining academic achievement, gardening, nutrient-dense food experiences, physical activity and school and family engagement.

Through the program, students begin to love learning about plants, what they need, how they provide for our needs and how a class can work together to provide for the garden.

Cupid Project helps spread love Professor Newton creates science fun

Card creation for Valentine’s Day is in full swing for the Cupid Project. The Cupid Project was an organization started by two Longview High School students, Matthew and Stephanie Guck, to help spread love one card at a time.

The vision of the organization “is to spread love and kindness one greeting card

at a time and fight against loneliness and bullying.” Students gathered on Saturday, Feb. 8, to create handmade cards to deliver to those in nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Longview.

The after school program JKL Longview worked on cards for the Cupid Project on Thursday to help contribute to the cause.

Professor Newton added some additional fun and education to the 2020 STEAM Fair on Saturday, Feb. 8.

The Professor Newton Science Show was a 30 minute engaging and interactive program that showcased science demos.

Students learned about the Scientific Method and fun experiments they could do at home (with their guardians’ permission).

2020 STEAM Fair sees huge turnout, projects There were more than 280 projects presented by more than 400 students at the 2020 STEAM Fair. Students grades 5-12 representing campuses across the district competed for the top places judged by com-

munity volunteers.

Currently all LISD prekindergarten and kindergarten classes use the Montessori style of learning. Ware East Texas Montessori Academy also offers Montes-

sori classes for first- through third-graders, with plans to eventually expand through fifth grade. South Ward Elementary includes elements of Montessori education in their curriculum as well, with plans to eventually expand them campus-wide.

The district also led state and regional averages in attendance (LISD: 96.6 percent, State: 95.4 percent, Region: 95.7 percent), the dropout rate from grades 9th through 12th (LISD: 0.6 percent, State: 1.9 percent, Region: 0.9 percent), and average SAT scores (LISD: 1046, State: 1036).

LISD is also well above the state average in the number of teachers with 20-plus years of experience (LISD: 23.1 percent, State: 15.7 percent).

Wilson cited a number of programs currently underway at various LISD campuses as ways the district has improved its standing in prevention and intervention curricula.

“These include, but are not limited to Forever Friends, Young Gentlemen, Thrive360, Communities in Schools, Girl Power, Circle Up, CrimeStoppers, Partners in Prevention, Eagle Leadership, Capturing

Kids’ Hearts, Girls with Pearls, and of course the Just Keep Livin’ program at Longview High created in partnership with alumnus Matthew McConaughey.”

But despite the numerous gains and achievements, Wilson maintained “there is always room for improvement.”

“Our teachers and campus leaders continue to set very high goals for themselves, their

campuses, and their students, and they continue to work hard to meet those goals,” she said.

“The LISD department of Curriculum and Instruction will also continue to provide every support and assistance we can in order to help our students be the best they can be.”

“Our campuses showed considerable progress in a host of measures, according to the Texas Education Agency’s report,” she said.

Longview ISD met or exceeded grade levels on par with the rest of the state in Reading, Mathematics, Writing, and Social Studies, narrowly trailing state levels in Science (LISD: 53 percent, Texas: 54 percent), but leading the region in every measure by a broad margin.

“We’re not in competition (about graduation rates),” he said. “While being ranking at or near the top in East Texas is certainly validating the quality of our staff and families in working together for student success, the goal is help every single student in our care reach a successful outcome to their K-12 education. That’s every Longview student reaching graduation. That is the only acceptable goal.”

LHS College Fair returns Numerous colleges and universities will be attending the LHS College Fair on Monday, April 6, during all lunches in the hallway and foyer by the LHS downstairs library. LHS students and their parents are welcome to come and see what the future could hold!

Longview Early Graduation High School Principal Kristi Means said the mission of her program is “to educate, graduate, and prepare every single student that walks through the door for success and college and/or career opportunities after high school.”

“The teachers, support staff, custodians, and cafeteria workers are all in one accord to achieve a 100 percent graduation rate every year. It takes a good

team,” she said. “Each student has a customized individual education plan that is implemented with everyone doing their part to include the students, parents, and campus staff. We are proud of our improvements, but there is more to be done!”

Phase I of the plan calls all campuses to purge all of their out of adoption instructional materials, with campus staff permitted to take any of the books set aside for disposal.

The remainder will then be shipped to the District Warehouse located in the old Everhart campus.

Then the district bookroom will be purged. Prior to disposal, there will be a time set aside for district staff to come by the warehouse to acquire anything they deem useful.

Local non-profit organizations that have expressed interest in obtaining books for their youth groups will be invited to the warehouse to get anything they need.

For Phase II of the plan Franklin Media Textbook Solutions has agreed to assist Longview ISD in the disposal and recycling of any remaining

materials completely free of charge to the district.

“Of course, prior to the sale or disposal of instructional materials, the district must notify the Texas Education Agency of its intent to sell or dispose of instructional materials,” Williams added. “We will present TEA ‘s disposal notification form for final approval and signature at a later date. The form requires detailed information which we will not have until we get deeper into the project.”

All funds received by the district from the sale or disposal of instructional materials must be used to purchase instructional materials.

The programs include both an academic phase and a practicum/intern experience guided by dedicated professionals.

Dr. Jacqueline Burnett, LISD Director of Montessori Programs, said students complete a variety of meaningful assignments “which relate directly to their classroom experience and provide opportunities for practical application of the course material.”

“Weekly face-to-face interactions with instructors and fellow students builds a rich and supportive learning community and provides additional opportunities for integration of course topics,” she added.
