Shobert, Miller, Schaap Foster Math & Science Earn ‘Voice’ Scholarships team returns to STATE

Foster Middle School’s Math & Science team team once again headed to state on Saturday, April 27 in San Antonio at UTSA campus.

The Texas Math and Science Coaches Association (TMSCA) is a competition that features three math categories and one science category that students can take part in.

Congratulations to Longview High seniors Alyssa Shobert, Brady Miller, and Payton Schaap for being selected as The Longview Voice Scholarship winners for 2019!

Alyssa, Brady, and Payton were selected for contributing articles about their time at Longview High and people who made an impact on their educational journey.

OPINION

What legacy will you leave, Lobos?

Dear Lobos, This is the time of year that kids are getting wound up and teachers are worn down – summertime is just around the corner. No doubt you are already dreaming of a lightened schedule and getting to sleep in. I always loved the summertime. Some summers my brothers and I would work mowing yards. Some summers I spent time hanging out with my friends or as a camp counselor at Camp Huawni. But one thing always remained true: who I was by the time summer got here was not the same as the person I was at the beginning of the prior school year. I am betting that is the case for you too.

Have you ever stopped to think about the fact that who you are at the beginning of a process is not who you are by the end? Sometimes I think we are too busy putting one step in front of the other to truly appreciate the metamorphosis that occurs. Think about it: you are not the same person at the end of 7th grade as you were in the middle of 1st grade. And you are not the same person at the end of 4th grade as you are at the beginning of 11th grade. But when and how does that change occur? It occurs through

that very process of putting one step in front of the otherjust getting a little smarter, a little stronger and a little wiser every day.

So how does this change take place? Well I can tell you this: during the months of September to May, that change is fully guided by those around you every day, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., i.e., your teachers. So where does that leave you? It should leave you in a world of gratitude and debt to those who have sacrificed their time and effort, their patience and their sanity, to educate you. Like it or not, like them or not, your teachers have helped mold you into the person that you are now. Wow, what a responsibility that falls upon them!

Did they ask for this? Absolutely not! But it is part of the education process these days. I just want to take a minute out of this column to thank all of your teachers, administrators, coaches, bus drivers, custodians and instructors in your extra-curricular activities. Anyone that has touched your life throughout this past year is owed a big thank you.

Now, bac k to you knucklehead students: let’s talk about passing the torch.

Because each one of you, whether you are in the first grade or twelfth grade, are going to pass the torch to someone who is taking your place next year. Just like in the Olympics, where the opening ceremony takes place – they run the Olympic torch all the way across the country where the games are taking place, and they pass that torch from one runner to the next. They do this so that the chain never dies. Consider what that means in Longview school district: we want the chain to never die, first grade through twelfth grade. What kind of torch are you passing? One full of life, energy, passion, consideration, compassion and respect? Or are you passing another torch? One of tomfoolery, gossip, anger, deceit and dishonesty?

So, when you are passing the torch, I want you to think about something: your teachers are passing their torch as well by passing you on. And then the very next year, they pick up their new torch and start all over again

with new students who were just where you were at the same time the year before. You get the benefit of moving on and learning new things.

And those teachers get the benefit of knowing what they will pour into those new students will help them to progress just like you did.

As you wrap up these last few days I want you to consider the torch you are passing. Make it shine brighter, if you can. And if the time has come for you to graduate Longview Independent School District, take your torch and make Longview shine bright for having helped raise you.

You are a reflection of all of us, and we are proud to have had an impact on your life. And likewise, we are grateful for the impact your torch has had on all of us.

Lobo alum returns home to LISD

In 2007, I graduated from Longview High School with plans and dreams for the future. Some things worked out, some didn’t.

After all was said and done though, I have found myself living back in East Texas and working for the very school district that I graduated from. I’m no teacher nor am I an administrator. One thing I found out during my time at LHS was that I was fairly decent at writing and quite enjoyed it. After pursuing that direction for some years I found that I could also do a good job of page layout for newspapers. All my past successes and failures led me to this point in my life, giving me the opportunity to come back to

Alumni|Continued from page 1

Ronald Cook Ron, a 1965 graduate of Longview High, continued his education at Kilgore College where he was drafted by the New York Yankees as an outfielder, later being converted to a pitcher.

Such a drastic move was not difficult for Ron, who starred for the Lobos in football, basketball, and track as well as baseball.

In 1968 Ron’s baseball career brought him back to Texas by signing with the Houston Astros, where he stayed in the pitching rotation until retiring in 1970. But the Astros organization has not forgotten the rangy southpaw from East Texas.

Every August he has been recognized by the frontoffice in The Astros Legends ceremony at Minute Maid Park.

Returning home to Longview after his career in Major League Baseball, Ron and his wife Ginger raised three children who all graduated from Longview High. Today Ron is owner-operator of Downhole Tubulars, Inc. of Longview and an active member of First United Methodist Church of Longview.

The son of Leroy and Dorothy Cook of Longview, Ron was nominated by fellow 1965 alum Doris Collier, also the wife of former Lobo teammate Mike Collier. Citing his professional baseball career, Doris said the LHS athletic department “helped make him the athlete that he became.”

Perry Langenstein A 1959 graduate of Longview High School, Perry continued his education Texas Tech and Texas Christian University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in theatre. He continued his graduate studies in theatre at both schools u n t i l 1972, when he bec ame

Perry returned home to the Longview Community Theatre in 1974 where he directed more than 40 productions over an eight-year tenure, before taking his skills in production design to the big city. In addition to his numerous credits in the theatre, Perry has served on the boards of his church as well as performing arts organizations in various cities.

Constantly seeking to improve his craft, Perry helped innovate theatre productions by developing the Smart Point Theatre Lighting system used by theatres throughout the country and across the world! Today he remains a highly sought after performing arts facility design consultant from his adopted hometown of Fort Worth.

The son of Perry and Virginia Langenstein of Longview, Perry is the father of three children. Nominated by lifelong friend and former classmate Kent Caldwell, who described Perry as an excellent student, “who was well-liked by classmates and a role model to follow.”

“While Perry’s accomplishments as a Distinguished Alumni are too many to list in a nomination letter, it has always been an honor to refer to Perry as my friend,” he said.

Randy Peters Randy graduated from Longview High in 1971, starting his professional career at Bass Chevrolet in 1975. Working his way up from washing cars and working under the hood, Randy purchased the company outright in 1995, creating the regional auto sales empire known as Peters Chevrolet-Chrysler-JeepDodge-Ram-Fiat of Longview. Over the last ten years, Peters has expanded operations exponentially, doubling its workforce and contributing to the sales tax base of the community.

Never forgetting where he came from, Randy has been a passionate supporter of countless Longview ISD programs. Peters Chevrolet is a premium sponsor of everything to Lobo athletics to the Automotive Career Technology Program and The Longview Voice district newspaper.

In addition to the Lobo Nation, Randy has been active in various civic organizations in the greater Longview area, including the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Ambucs of Longview, Rotary Club of Longview, Longview Interfaith Hospitality Network, Newgate MIssion, Giants of Law

Nominated by his six children (all LHS graduates themselves), eldest son Scott writes of his father, “there is not a better ambassador of Longview ISD than Randy Peters.”

Events are set to begin at 9 a.m. with the Longview ISD Foundation commemorative brick presentation at the Lobo Foundation Plaza (near the home entrance to Lobo Stadium). This event is free and open to the public.

An 11:15 a.m. reception at Pinecrest Country Club will be followed by lunch at 11:45. Tickets for the luncheon are $20 and are available at the LISD Education Support Center, 1301 E. Young St. Honorees are nominated at-large and chosen by a committee of previous honorees, volunteer Distinguished Alumni Committee members and the district’s Community Relations office.

Distinguished alumni typically have excelled professionally, in addition to serving the communities in which they live.

“We encourage all our students to contribute articles and photography to The Longview Voice,” said Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox. “That’s why it’s called ‘the Voice,’ because it is a voice for all of Longview ISD. We want our students to feel a sense of ownership toward this newspaper.”

Each year the Community Relations department selects a Longview High School senior student who contributes work to The Longview Voice for a scholarship to the school of their choice.

“General math, you’ll have to have a perfect score and you’ll probably tie with somebody else. Calculator, you can maybe miss one or two and you’ll get first place possibly.”

The final math category is Number Sense which is the shortest test, clocking in at just 10 minutes all without a calculator to assist you, requiring the students to learn tricks to do the problems in their head.

“So that’s what we learn, the tricks to do this,” Shobert added.

In Calculator the students get 30 minutes and use a Reverse Polish Notation Calculator and are required to write everything in Scientific Notation.

“Science is all over the place. It’s one of the hardest ones to study for,” Shobert said.

The only science related competition covers a broad range of scientific topics but some areas will receive more attention

than others from year-to-year. Both Science and General Math are multiple choices while Calculator and Number Sense require the students to write down the answer themselves.

FMS 8th grader Carolina Rodriguez has been competing in UIL since the 4th grade, but started TSMCA in the 6th grade.

“I enjoy being on the Math & Science team because I like doing math and also I’ve met some wonderful people while doing this,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez says that TSMCA has helped her to push herself as she competes to go to state every year as she is once again doing this year. She also encourages other students to try out for the event and experience it.

In memoriam Teachers take a Mr. Emerett O’Neal hands-on approach Moody II (1957-2018) to prep

By Alyssa Shobert, The Long-View On a rainy morning in early October, a small group of my peers and I gathered outside the partially-flooded classroom, unsure of what to do. Before we had time to worry long, Mr. Moody swooped in with a mop bucket and a smile of quick reassurance. Although we normally would have been forced to change locations for the morning, Mr. Moody had us back in our room in no time. As he bustled off to the next problem that required his attention, his wide smile still graced his face.

Whenever any beloved member of the LHS family passes, we must all gather together in support of each other and in memory of them. On October 23, 2018, Emerett O’Neal Moody, II died at age 61.

Moody served Longview High School through maintenance for 20 years, and Photo by Brooklyn McCasland was a part of the district for 24 years.

His dedication, and his bright presence most of all, will never be forgotten.

As described by many of the faculty, Moody was a very hard worker in support of all Longview High School staff.

“If there was ever a problem in the Mickey Melton, he would arrive with a smile, a handshake, and a solution,” Fine Arts teacher Joshua Graves said.

Not only did he constantly work to improve the function and appearance of the Longview High School campus, Moody consistently made time to offer kind words to teachers and students alike.

“He’d stop by and just chat,” former teacher Katherine Weatherspoon said. “[He looked] like he didn’t have anything better to do, when he actually had about fifteen things he was working on around the school.”

Moody’s endless positivity and cheerfulness forever left an impact on everyone he came into contact with.

“Mr. Moody always had a smile on his face,” Career and Technology teacher Ashli Prelow said. “When he left, he always left a smile on yours as well.”

Above all, Moody was a friend to all, and he will be dearly missed.

“Mr. Moody was the most cheerful, happiest person I have ever met,” ESL teacher Denise Guerrero said. “I really miss hearing his whistling and the jingling of his keys brighten these hallways.”

On behalf of the faculty and student body of Longview High School, rest in peace, Mr. Moody. You are and will continue to be missed by your Lobo family.

With some State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness having taken place in April and more to take place this month, the principals in the Longview ISD are conf ident that their teachers are preparing the students as best they can. From computer programs to taking class outdoors, a variety of teaching methods are being used to help the children succeed.

“We do utilize activities and games inside (and outside) the classroom. The teachers are extremely creative,” said Bramlette Elementary Principal Nikita Mumphrey.

While learning about force and motion, fifth graders went outside to get a real world application of them.

“The kids went outside to the field and played a game of kick ball to see an authentic experience of it in action. We’re looking for authentic, every day experiences that the children can refer to,” Mumphrey said. “(In April) fifth grade had a reading and math boot camp. We also had a camp for writing and inside that boot camp we had Chromebooks…we had eight different stations setup.”

At Hudson PEP Elementary, fifth grade students recently were tasked with opening a locked box by completing math problems.

“When they work all the problems to get the combination, then they unlock their lock box and there’s a special treat inside,” said Hudson PEP Elementary Principal Sue Wilson. The treats ranged from a pencil to a Popsicle treat.

Along with preparing for important testing such as STAAR comes the possibility of stress. From pep talks from principles to motivational speakers to keeping parents informed, the faculty aims at keeping the children in good spirit.

“The students that I have personally met with…on the day before testing, I let them know they’re not being judged, do the best (they) can, this is just one day,” said J.L. Everhart Elementary Principal Arthur Brown. “I think this latest round, they were pretty well prepared. We’re basically giving them as much as we can.”

Brown said that he plans on getting Kenneth Davis, a former NFL player, to come give a motivational talk to the students before the next round of their tests takes place this month. This would mark the second time that the Texas native has gone to J.L. Everhart Elementary to help motivate the children to succeed.

‘Go Blue’ fights child abuse

East Te x a s Montessori Prep Academy hosted the “Go Blue” for Child Abuse Prevention annual event on Friday, April 5. Pre-K and Kinder students performed for parents, teachers and local advocacy agencies such as; Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, East Texas CASA, Buckner Child & Family Services, and the Martin House Children’s Advocacy Center.

Judge Bill Stoudt read the Gregg County Child Abuse Proclamation.

After the proclamation, the ETMPA Ambassadors planted gardenia trees to represent the children that pass away from domestic abuse each year.

Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month is a time to focus on ways not only to protect children from abusive environments, but most importantly, to prevent abuse from ever occurring. Unfortunately, child abuse and neglect exists in our state at an alarming rate; and it will not go away by simply ignoring it. It is up to each of us to arm ourselves with the facts, to learn the warning signs, and to watch out for our most innocent Texans.

Bramlette earns STEM certificate

Congratulations to everyone at Bramlette Elementary School on completing the requirements to earn the National Certificate for STEM Excellence (NCSE)!

A special acknowledgement goes out to teacher Kentrell Brittentine for her leadership and efforts in serving as point of contact/facilitator for coaching sessions and uploading evidence in the campus portfolio for each of the 27 campus indicators.

Many thanks to principal Nikita Mumphrey and the STEAM Leadership Team for all of their work in orchestrating and leading the charge to impact positive growth in the areas of instructional practice and ultimately student outcomes.

Free lunch, breakfast for elementary campuses The parents of Longview ISD elementary students can rest easy knowing their children will be fed at school, regardless of whether they remember to pack a lunch.

Starting in August 2019, every Longview ISD elementary student will receive free breakfast and lunch from the cafeteria thanks to the federal Community Eligibility Provision [CEP] program.

The LISD Board of Trustees approved the measure during last

month’s regular meeting.

A part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, Community Eligibility Provision allows qualifying schools that serve populations with high poverty rates to provide free breakfast and lunch.

LISD Director of Child Nutrition Phyllis Dozier said the program will benefit students and parents as well as the district.

Parents will be informed of the new program in the coming weeks, Dozier said.

“When USDA first started the Community Eligibility Provision three years ago, Longview ISD was not high enough to receive 100 percent reimbursement.

So, it was not financially sound for us to begin the program at that time,” Dozier added. “But since that time, the USDA has added Medicaid to free students, which has raised our percentage so that we are qualified to receive 100 percent (full) reimbursement. This program does not take into account the students that are free/reduced due to income.”

The program is for an initial three years with a bonus fourth year if the board so chooses.

Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox said programs like this are beneficial for some of Longview ISD’s most vulnerable families.

“A child at should never have to worry about whether or not they’re going to be able to eat a good breakfast or lunch,” he said. “Too many of our students face challenges outside the classroom that impede their ability to succeed in the classroom. We can’t expect our students to focus on learning if they’re hungry and don’t know where their next meal is coming from.”

Currently about 87 percent of students in Longview ISD qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.

The CEP program eliminates the process of collecting household applications to determine eligibility for free or reduced meals. Schools are selected based on the number of students’ families receiving benefits, like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

Lobo UIL Academic returns to State Longview ISD has seen another strong year UIL Academic, with Longview High School senior Sophie Bunn qualified as a state finalist in UIL Academic’s News Writing and senior Kasey Whitenack will attend as first alternate.

“We have a strong region, so we’re happy with the students that are going (and) we are always striving to do better,” said District UIL Academic Coordinator Jeannine Brandon.

At the District competition, first place went to: Kysean Dixon in Computer Applications, Samantha Taylor in Literary Criticism, Aditya Jagarlamundi in Number Sense, Kasey Whitenack in News Writing, Tania Ramirez in Social Studies and D’Keryian Alexander in Poetry.

Teams that came in first are Calculator Applications, Literary Criticism, Mathematics, Number Sense and One-Act Play. Five teams came in fifth place, Computer Science, Journalism, Science, Social Studies and Speech.

LHS One-Act made it all the way to Area with “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” where Nick Smith received Best Actor, Noah Williams received All Star Cast, Matthew Hanson and Roy Williams received Honorable Mention All Star Cast and Ellie Duval received All Star Tech.

“It was very exciting. We haven’t been in probably 10 years. This was a great group of kids and they worked hard, especially on their characterization to make their characters believable,” said One Act director Pam Mercer-McWilliams.

“It’s very sad because 9 of the 15 are seniors…so we’ll have to work on a whole new group now.”

This particular year the parents and students had college representatives that they normally would have to travel hundreds of miles to colleges such as Penn State and Mississippi State.

Many local colleges were also on hand to entice students to stay a bit more local and in state. From Kilgore College and LeTourneau University to further drives like UNT, the state colleges were well represented in numbers.

“We come here pretty regularly,” said UNT Admissions Counselor Victor Lopez. “We yield some pretty good numbers from this area.”

L opez said that they have 30 applicants from LHS this year alone.

For those who are looking more for a future outside of college, Texas Workforce and Solutions was on

hand as were some branches of the military.

Army Staff Sergeant Colin McCauley was one of the Army recruiters present and said that he had never been to a college or career fair back during his high school years.

“I’m really glad that they’re putting this information out there for students.

There is information that I’ve told students who are sophomores that they never would have gotten at my school,” SGG McCauley said. “You want to get the information from the source because a lot of times people look online now days and it’s just as important to come talk to someone who either works from the business or can tell you the information you need to know, faceto-face.”

College + Career fair draws students, vendors

With over 30 booths set up at the LHS College and Career Fair, the students that attended on Tuesday, April 9 saw a wide variety of possible futures. From talking to recruiters to doing pushups at the Army booth to get a pen, there were plenty of options for students who showed up for the annual spring event that is aimed at preparing LHS students for life after high school.

“The biggest thing is to be able to see all of these places at one time because so many of our kids either can’t or don’t go to visit all of these places,” said Scholarship Coordinator Gloria “Kay” Ray. Ms. Ray also says that the opportunity is a great chance for parents to also find

LHS senior Richard Hubbard. Planning on a future in machine work, Richard is considering a path in the military or going through a technical school.

“This is actually my first time (attending). I kind of wish I had come in previous years so I could have gotten more college stuff done, like financial aid,” Richard said.

Richard advises any students in the future that haven’t been to the fair to attend and find something that they want and stick to it.

‘Fun Run’ a HUGE District to accept success at PEP bids for new buses

Students at Hudson PEP were told that they did not raise $30,000 for their fundraising event which brought about a collective awww’s from the students.

Instead, they were told, they raised over $40,000. This brought about a massive cheer from the children.

Hudson PEP’s annual Hustle Fun Run was set on Friday, April 5th and despite the gloomy skies on the morning of the front parking lot was so full that dozens of vehicles were parking on the grass. Parents were showing up in force to spend time with their children or volunteer for a few hours.

One such parent was Ashleigh Blackwell, a parent who was volunteering while her first grader was doing laps.

“It’s a lot of fun. I went and did a lap with her,” Blackwell said. “It helps promote a healthy lifestyle which I think is important to start young.”

Anthony Lopeman is a 5th grade student and agrees that the fun run is a good health advantage and says that he will miss the event as he goes on to middle school next school year.

He hopes that middle school will have similar events that he can take part in.

“I think it’s great for kids and it’s really fun because it’s a fundraising event that helps the school get new supplies,” Anthony said.

Leading up to this day that saw five different grades of students run/walk for 25 minutes was several weeks of fundraising by the students.

The final day for donations was two days after the run, which co-chair for the fundraiser Jenny Hubbard said ended with a total of $47,404.

The funds raised go directly to Hudson PEP, with almost every cent raised going to them.

A wide variety of items are purchased with the money, ranging from basic school supplies to more expensive things such as Chromebooks or even special guest speakers.

In February, children author Jennifer Nielsen, who has wrote“Elliot and the Goblin Wars” came to Hudson PEP and talked to every grade about being an author.

Spending the day there, Nielsen signed her books for the children and even ate dessert with some students who had written essays about being writers.

Whether a student raises funds or not, all are able to take part in the fun run and all parents are welcome to volunteer or run/walk with their child.

“All the students get to take part whether they bring money in or not,” Hubbard said. “All parents are invited to attend, it doesn’t matter how much money their children bring in.”

When preparations start for next year’s Hudson PEP’s Hustle Fun Run, students will once again be sent home with information about the fundraiser as well as how to volunteer.

Longview ISD is in the market for ten new school buses, after trustees approved a resolution seeking bid proposals during Monday night’s regular meeting.

Chief Financial Officer Joey Jones said currently LISD owns buses that “cost the district more in maintenance than is fiscally responsible to spend.”

“By exercising an option to purchase ten new buses, the district could significantly upgrade the existing fleet and reduce maintenance expenses,” he said.

Jones told the board that approval for issuance of maintenance tax notes to cover cost of new bus purchases “will allow for the repayment over a three-year period, while having the new buses available by the start of the 2019-2020 school year.”

The old buses will be sold at auction.

Tax refunds to Gregg County Later, the board approved a request from the Gregg County Tax Assessor-Collector Kirk Shields to refund $5,385.83 in taxes that were paid in error.

Chief Financial Officer Joey Jones told trustees that Longview ISD was notified

by Kirk that an erroneous payment were made by Sun Trust.

“The letters from Mr. Shields were forwarded to Ms. Stacie Killingsworth with Linebarger, Goggan, Blair & Sampson, our delinquent tax collection attorney, for review,” Jones said. “Ms. Killingsworth agreed this error occurred through no fault of the taxpayer and, therefore, recommends that the payments be refunded.”

Culinary Arts students get real-life experience outside the classroom

At Longview High School, Chef Kevin Hill doesn’t believe that students who graduate from the dual credit course in the culinary arts should be stuck just learning the basics of the kitchen nor stuck in the classroom. In April alone, students took part in Taste of Longview, a luncheon for the Longview Foundation and saw them work alongside the Ag department just a week later.

At the Taste of Longview some students helped with tickets while others helped the Corner Bakery Café and others helped The Cace Kitchen.

Just one event offered multiple different learning experiences for the students.

Saying his favorite memory of his time in the culinary department, twelfth grader Kaleb Snodey helped the Corner Bakery Café make cake pops this year.

“I love to cook…anything I can get my hands on,” Kaleb said of his desire that led to him signing up for the class.

In the classroom, students are going to learn more than just the basics of meal prep or knife safety.

said. “We do a lot of science, math, agriculture and medicine. I incorporate cross-curriculum disciplines in all of my lessons. We try to roll it all together to try and make a whole student and not just a chef. So we talk about culture, we talk about religion, how they affect food…what we eat, why we eat, why we choose what we eat.”

One draw of taking culinary classes according to Hill is the simple fact that everyone has to eat.

“I would say probably 80 percent of them chose this as a pathway because you always need to know how to cook, no matter what profession you get in.

Then I would say about 20 percent are ones that are thinking about this as a career.”

The program has approximately 350 students with about 68 students currently in the dual-credit course.

After taking part in the two years of the dual-credit course, students will have 17 college credits that are accepted

by Kilgore College and some that will transfer to other colleges though the transfer policies will affect how many will do so.

One student who is planning on pursuing a culinary path after Longview High School is eleventh grader Zhamiyah Henson. She recommends that other students give the dual-credit program a serious consideration and sign up for it.

“It’s a good experience for everybody. It’s a learning experience where you get to work with different people,” Zhamiyah said. “I like it, it’s pretty cool.”

Lobo welders take KC competition Congratulations to the Longview High School Welding Team for taking places 1st, 3rd, and 5th in the annual welding competition at Kilgore College. The team raked in $5,000 in scholarships and prizes!

Jose Landin from Longview High School earned the top prize April 12 at the fourth

annual High School Welding Contest at Kilgore College.

The contest, sponsored by the KC Welding Technology program and the KC Welding Club, had high school students competing from 10 area school districts.

Landin won a $1,500 KC scholarship thanks to Eastman Chemical Company, a $1,000 scholarship from District 17 of the American Welding Society, a Miller welding machine cutting rig and a Miller welding mask.

Luis Castro from Longview High School earned third place, winning a $1,000 KC scholarship thanks to General Dynamics/SATCOM and a Harris torch-cutting set.

LOBOS SEE SUCCESS IN SPRING SPORTS

The warm glow of success continues to radiate throughout Lobo Nation, with standout performances by boys and girls soccer teams, our diamond heroes on the baseball and softball fields, numerous accolades earned in tennis and golf, as well as the many tracksters who have dominated their events in the recent Lobo Relays and other area meets.

Athletic Director John King praised Longview High School student-athletes for how they continue to rise to the occasion playing some of the most elite programs across the state in the 6A classification.

“Class 6A is elite across the board, you’re talking about the largest schools in the entire state, and our student-athletes don’t back down for a second,” he said. “It says a lot about our kids and our community because Lobo athletics is Longview-made, and they do such a tremendous job representing their school and their city.”

King also cited the large number of multisport athletes in his program.

“It’s not unusual for us to have an athlete who might be all-district or even all-state in multisports,” he said. “We encourage our Lobos to be versatile athletes. Our athletic department believes strongly that cross-training and multi-sport participation is in the best interests of all our athletes success... both on and off the field.”

SOCCER The boys varsity won District 116A for the first time in seven years, finishing the regular season with a 17-5-4 record. The junior varsity also won district with just one blemish on their record, finishing 19-1 on the season.

Head coach James Wright said his players enjoyed “one of the best seasons in recent memory.”

“Our JV won the Pine Tree Tournament, the Long v iew Invitational, The Tyler Lee

Tournament,and the 11-6A District title, led by Junior Chris Perez, sophomore Dominick Gutierrez, sophomore Jesus Ramirez, sophomore Francisco Hernandez, and Sophomore Alexis Olvera,” he said. “A young player who proved his worth this year was sophomore Alejandro Rojas-Monsivais. He scored 10 goals for the Varsity in its winning of the District title.

His role was very significant to our team.”

Raul Torrez was voted 11-6A District MVP. The junior goalkeeper has played three years as a varsity starter.

Jesus Galvan was voted 11-6A District Offensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row. The talented junior finished the season with 19 goals.

Blaine Wright was voted firstteam All-District at forward, the senior scored 6 goals this season and has signed to play with LeTourneau University.

Will Sherman was voted firstteam All-District at forward, the senior scored 6 goals this season with 8 assists and will be attending Texas Tech next year.

Giovanni Enriquez was voted first-team All-District at midfielder, the senior scored 8 goals this season with 4 assists and has signed to play with Presbyterian College.

Eric Hernandez was voted firstteam All-District at midfielder, the senior scored 2 goals this season with 4 assists.

Freshman standouts include defender Victor Aguilar, forward Frederick Acosta, Midfielder Diego Enriquez, and forward Edgar Mata.

“We’re graduating some guys who leave big shoes to fill,” Coach Wright added. “But I’m excited by what our young guys bring to the table. The future of Lobo soccer is bright in Longview.”

TENNIS Lobo tennis swept district last month at Rockwall Wilkerson Sanders Stadium Courts. Out of

sixteen Regional spots, Longview took eight.

Head coach Isaac Anders said, overall, “results have been good this season.”

“As far as outcomes go, District was a huge success,” he said. “We hope to have some kids represent Longview at the State tournament this month.”

Simran Kortikere won first place in girls singles defeating her teammate Kelsey Quiett 6-0, 6-2.

That takes her record to 47-1 on the year.

Lobo seniors Zach Fasang and Nitin Rangu took second in Boys Doubles falling to Tyler Lee’s Nathan Drain and Evan Eschenbach 4-6, 4-6.

Austin Greifenkamp and Elizabeth Wall defeated Sophia Vela and Andrew Dayman from Rockwall 6-1, 6-2 in a playback to take second in Mixed Doubles.

Lobo freshmen Rachna Edalur and Gowri Rangu took second in Girls Doubles defeating Rockwall’s Siena Martinez and Lauren Zastrov in a playback 6-4 6-2.

Kelsey Quiett was the story of the tournament for Longview. She entered the tournament unseeded and an Underdog. Quiett took Second place in Girls Singles defeating Rockwall heaths Miranda Daulong 6-4 6-2. On the Way to Second place Quiett upset number two seed Avery Riley from Tyler Lee 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 in the Quarterfinals.

Lobo tennis is graduating five senior boys, Anders said, “and so next year we will be rebuilding on the boys side.”

“I am so excited to see what the new young bunch of boys will do and how they will progress,” he said. “Challenges are ahead but that gets me motivated and I hope it gets the others pumped up.”

SOFTBALL Lady Lobo softball is still looking strong, with an eye toward making some noise in the postseason. With a 17-9-1 regular season record, the Lady Lobos are 10-2 and second in district.

Roberts said senior outfielder Alexius Allen is “an aggressive outfielder whose energy can change the trajectory of the game.”

“Alexius has been working her way out of a mid-season slump and is now executing very well at the plate,” she said.

Zek yia Robinson, a junior infielder and pitcher is a vocal leader “and constant example of hustle and heart.”

“She works hard every practice, stays focused, and is always there to support her team,” Coach Roberts said.

The cool junior hurler Kennedy Cameron is another player Coach Roberts leans on in clutch situations.

“Kennedy leads our team on the mound,” she said. “She remains calm under pressure and has hit a milestone of 200 strikeouts with a 1.23 ERA in district this season.”

Roberts echoed Coach King’s sentiment about the vital role versatility plays in Lobo athletics.

“Junior infielder Jordan McClain is a three-sport athlete who balances track and softball at the same time,” Roberts said. “She has a .550 batting average with 19 runs, 19 stolen bases, and 9 RBIs”

THE LONGVIEW VOICE — BASEBALL Lobo baseball has made a lot of strides this season, taking on topranked Metroplex area programs and playing hard for every inning.

Head coach Jim Goldman said his team started out playing solid baseball, but “hit a funk in our final tournament at Hallsville,” before finishing up the regular season with a gutsy win against Tyler Lee and an emotional senior night contest with Mesquite.

“We have hit the ball extremely well throughout district, but often have failed to come up with that big hit with men on base,” he said.

“Defensively, where earlier in the season we limited our walks hit by pitches and errors, we have failed to do that in district play and it has come back to bite us. We are getting great game effort from our players but we often have some lapses that hurt us.”

Goldman said his team has continued to grow and improve throughout the season, led by standout senior leaders Blake Martin and Kris Shumaker.

“Proud of our team for the character they show in every game, win or lose,” he said. “I can’t say enough about the great job Blake and Kris have done as team leaders.”

Goldman said baseball demands athletes “do the little things” that lead to success, adding that Martin and Shumaker exemplify this type of discipline.

“They are the first ones there and

the last to leave. They are the ones always doing the little things that have to be done for a program to be successful. They work the field, pick up the equipment, keep the dugout clean etc and they do this without me ever having to ask. They bust their tails in the weight room and on the field daily no matter what is going on in their personal lives.

In everything they do they give a maximum effort,” he said. By doing so much extra it shows in the way they play. Those two are currently our leading hitters and they shine on defense.”

Thomas Cox and KJ Ross are also senior leaders that Goldman singled out for praise.

“Thomas has thrown the ball well all season for us, and has proven to be an outstanding pitcher in clutch situations,” he said. “KJ has overcome adversity and has put together a strong campaign on the mound and in centerfield.”

Replacing those seniors next season, Goldman said, is going to be a difficult task. Nevertheless, the future of Lobo baseball is bright.

“After a very tough start to his season freshman Gabe Flores is having an outstanding season.

Offensively and defensively he’s one of the top players in District 11 6A,” he said. “We’ve also got juniors Keaton King and Micah King who are having very good offensive seasons.”

TRACK & FIELD Lobo boys track took the bronze

as a team in the District 11-6A meet and the girls earned 4th, with 27 total athletes qualifying for Area (17 boys, 10 girls) Head coach Casey Pearce said Kyeran Monroe has been exceptional, running a 21.30 in the 200-meter and a 48.13 in the 400-meter. “It’s great to see these young people putting in the work and doing what it takes to get better,” he said.

GOLF Our golf program continued to excel this season, earning individual and team honors in one of the most competitive divisions in the state of Texas.

Lobo golf finish the year with a 5th place finish at the District tournament, with Cade Bruce taking 4th place overall.

Cade Bruce shot a final round 75 (+3) in the Regional tournament, finishing tied for 12th and just a few shots short of qualifying for the State tournament.

Congrats also to the girls varsity for taking first place at the Canton Invitational earlier this spring!

Lobo legend selected Championship to Hall of Fame rings given out

WACO — Former Longview Lobo football standout Loyd Phillips, a two-time All-America selection at the University of Arkansas who had a brief, injury-shortened NFL career, was one of seven new members inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame on March 30th.

Longview High School Athletic Director John King praised the impact Phillips had on his hometown, long after his Lobo playing days were over.

“The tradition of Lobo football is a rich one, and Mr. Loyd Phillips is one of the all-time greats,” he added.

Phillips, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, was the winner of the 1966 Outland Trophy as the country’s most outstanding interior lineman while playing at the University of Arkansas.

As a defensive tackle, he was selected first team All-America in 1965 and 1966. He was named All-American by the Associated Press, United Press International, Central Press, American Football Coaches Association and the Walter Camp Foundation in 1965 and 1966, and in 1966, he added Newspaper Enterprise Association, Football Writers Association of America, Sporting News and Time Magazine honors.

‘Ironman’ events test Lobos mettle

Not content with winning the state championship, the Lobo football team showed their competitive drive during their annual Ironman competition. The top three, of the eleven total that were acknowledged on April 3 before the entire team, earned their ranking by competing in a variety of physical events that offered them the chance to push their bodies to the limits. Congratulations to Kaden Meredith (First), Haynes King (Second), Robert Pierce (Third) and every other Lobo that placed and to those that went out and tried their hardest.

“It’s a competition we setup for the off-season that gives our kids something to look forward to,” said head coach John King. “Everybody is competing against themselves, but at the same time they’re competing against guys in their position group or guys on the team that are vying for that top 11 spot. They know there’s a competition coming; well they get a chance to showcase their improvements…”

From running, jumping, lifting weights and more, the competition allows each individual player to push themselves in a variety of ways, while giving them the chance to compete against their own team for a change as opposed to another school.

Since its inception almost 20 years ago the event has largely remained the same, but each strength coach during the years has put a bit of their own twist on it.

“We’ve changed a few events, but it’s always been competitive. We’ve had four different strength coaches during that time and everybody kind of puts their own twist on it; but the nuts and bolts of it have always stayed pretty consistent,” Coach King said. “This year we added a med ball toss, just something to even out the weight events and running events so it would be more a true test of the Ironman.”

While the Ironman competition offers the Lobo football team a chance to compete against their teammates, when all is said and done they are still a team and they share in one another’s victories.

As Coach Cade Carnett called out each name for the top 11, every Lobo on the field cheered and applauded for their fellow Lobo.

The Longview Lobo football team will kick off their next season on Aug. 30 against Lufkin in Lufkin.

LISD accepting bids for new turf at Lobo Stadium Lobo Stadium could have a new look when the defending State Champions take the field in August.

Trustees authorized Chief Financial Officer Joey Jones to seek Requests for Proposals (RFPs) to replace the artificial turf field and track at Lobo Stadium, during the regular meeting April 15th.

Jones said the district is going to contract with McKinney-based Sports Design Group to oversee the project. The $19,500 contract covers schematic design through closeout. Funds for the project will come from the district’s general fund balance.

“The current turf is approximately nine years old and in need of replacement. Resurfacing will extend the utilization of the existing track for several years,” he said. “We’re going to contract with Sports Design Group to evaluate the scope of the project and prepare all specifications, should the Board approve it.”

begin shortly after graduation ceremonies (May 17) with the project completed in time for the Lobo’s 2019 football season.

Athletic Director/Head Football Coach John King said the facility is a vital part of numerous extracurricular programs at Longview ISD, such as band, ROTC, “and many members of our community enjoy walking and jogging around the stadium.”

“Lobo Stadium is a highly sought-after venue for regional competitions of sports and marching bands,” he said. “The entire Lobo community takes a lot of pride in our stadium, and we will continue to maintain and improve this facility however we can,” King added.

LHS Tennis Courts Lobo Stadium isn’t the only facility getting a face-lift.

Board members also accepted a $51,300 bid from Bullard-based Pro Tech Construction to resurface the LHS Tennis Courts.

Jones said, after evaluating all the bids, the administration determined that the quote from Pro Tech, “provided complete maintenance features that would preserve the integrity of the courts for a longer period of time which the administration feels is the best value for the district.”

Kenzie Cosplays is coming from Dallas as a guest of the con with Mermaid Cosplay being from East Texas. David Della Rocco of “The Boondock Saints” fame and Tito Santana who wrestled in the WWF among others will be present.

More guests have been announced with more on the way leading up to

the event.

Aside from the wide range of guests that will be present, the convention will also have panels on taking place covering a range of topics including tutorials from cosplayers.

A section in the convention center will be dedicated for tabletop gaming which will be run by Longview based Three Suns Unlimited.

Comic conventions serve as a meeting ground for fans of various geeky or nerds interests to be able to express themselves that they might not around others in their daily lives.

“They should be a place where people can share their love of a genre, show, actor or fandom with other fans without worrying about being ‘the weirdo’ or being made fun of,” said an AVC Conventions representative. “They are a chance to meet some of your favorite actors in person and share your love of their work. They are just a fun place to be.”

Last month the Longview High School Automotive Club took a field trip to Peters Chevrolet Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Fiat dealership to hear about opportunities they offer.

Students train in Area businessman, ‘911’ experience Lobo supporter leads by example Longview High School CTE Criminal Justice students worked with Longview Police Department in a hands-on demonstration on how to conduct traffic stops on Tuesday, April 2.

Students had a checklist to review and act on while approaching a traffic violator. Students were coached on the proper verbiage, how to safely approach and depart a vehicle, how work with a partner and more.

Students in the Criminal Justice course have the opportunity to learn about airport security, CIA, corporate security, corrections officer, detective, DEA, FBI Agent, probation and parole, and 911 emergency operator.

We are EXTREMELY proud of Lobo alum, Kevin Hawkins. Not only does he go above and beyond to help the Longview community, but he and his crew at Divine Catering and Restaurant took the time to serve more than 500 soldiers last month.

According to state and local policy, professional employee resignations may be accepted no later than the 45th day before the first day of instruction of the following school year.

Therefore, the last day the district will accept resignations will be July 5, 2019.

Loretta Thompson Martin, LISD Director of Human Resources, said after this date, the district is not required to release employees from their contracts.

“At best, an employee resigning from his/her position after this date will be released when a suitable replacement is found,” she added.

Longview Public Library is hosting ‘Out of this World’ Summer Events Children and teens can earn prizes just for reading

Longview Public Library invites the children and teens of East Texas to “take me to your reader” this summer with a space themed Summer Reading Club.

Summer Reading Club is free for anyone 0-18 and encourages children to read throughout the summer by offering prizes or coupons for each week a participant achieves their reading goal.

The library even offers a summer reading club for adults who are interested in participating.

“Kids who don’t read over the summertime experience what is called a ‘summer slide’ in their reading. They slide a grade level back; our goal is to keep that from happening! The Summer Reading Club is able to encourage thousands of children each year to keep reading during the summer months, develop a life-long love of

reading, and stay on or raise their reading levels,” said Youth Services Supervisor Jenna Yeakley.

“We work hard to offer fun, engaging activities each day of the week throughout June and July and plenty of great prizes to incentivize readers.”

Summer Reading Club kicks off with a party on the library’s Eastman Plaza on Friday, June 7 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The six-week program will culminate with an end party at Broughton Park on Wednesday, July 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Summer Reading Club is FREE to the public and registration opens online and at the library on Wednesday, May 1 and continues throughout the program.

SRC activities will include performers from across Texas at the Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Complex, story-times, crafty kids, LEGOS,

movie days, Super Smash Bros. tournaments, and, new this year, a slate of teen activities which will end with a Library After Hours event from 6 p.m. to midnight on Friday, July 26.

A full schedule of Summer Reading Club programs will be available at www.longviewtexas. gov/library and in the library on Wednesday, May 1. Also, for the first time ever, the Summer Reading Club t-shirts that staff & volunteers wear will be on sale to the public this summer! Shirts will be available for purchase at the circulation desk.

“For the past two years, we have had more than 2,000 registrants,” Yeakley said. “We are excited that due the support of generous and loyal sponsors, we can make a difference in the lives of so many kids and teens again this year.”
