TEA gives training sessions at LISD Representatives from Texas Education Agency and The System of Great Schools program led a training session Aug. 17th at the Longview ISD administration building.

Featuring education consultant Paul Pastorek, former Louisiana Superintendent of Education, guests included current and former LISD board members, campus administrators, as well as government officials and area education professionals.

Pastorek explained that a System of Great Schools district has much greater responsibility and flexibility to deliver education to students in that local school community.

“It is built on the belief that the people closest to the action make the best decisions about teaching and learning,” he said.

The testing craze is fading in U.S. schools

America’s decadeslong infatuation with standardized testing is finally waning, and for good reasons. Despite years of training students to do better on tests, the performance of 17-year-olds on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as the nation’s report card, has flatlined.

That’s in part because test performance became a goal in many districts instead of a means to an end and, thus, a prime example of Campbell’s law, which points to the corrupting influence of using a single measurement as a target, thus ensuring that “it ceases to be a good measure.”

The federal No Child Left Behind initiative introduced by President George W. Bush imposed a battery of high-stakes testing mandates, which continued under President Barack Obama. If children failed to meet proficiency goals for math and English, schools faced closure, teachers were shamed and fired and children were held back.

Developing high-quality alternative assessments is time-consuming and costly, and the federal pilot program offers no funding. But educators committed to the model say it’s worth it. At the Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies, a consortium school where 9 in 10 students are members of minority groups and 70% are economically disadvantaged, one group of 11th graders completed a science assessment that involved a yearlong study of climate change and alternative energy sources.

One challenge is that project-based assessments would demand greater confidence in the ability of teachers and schools to judge their students’ progress, and would require striking a better balance between local autonomy and the kind of state and federal oversight that favors standardized curricula and testing.

The digital disruption in education: Enough

Education’s digital transition seems to be taking its toll on everyone involved. Is it just growing pains, or are we sliding down a slope from which we can never ascend?

Is technology the savior of education, or a pervasive evil transforming our idyllic educational institutions?

The digital transition requires large investments of capital, and administrators are charged with both finding this capital and deciding how it is to be used.

They also have the responsibility of justifying their actions if test scores don’t improve—or worse, if test scores decline.

Teachers, on the other hand, are experiencing a skyrocketing workload.

Many are exhausted.

In fact, our own Learning Counsel research found that 25 percent of instructors’ time is now spent on searching for digital curriculum or custom build-

Many leaders look at these shifts and see “techie” teachers using new tools and understand that their role and function must change. They understand they must harness this new power but have little knowledge of how to do that. Most do not yet have the concept of tech being ubiquitous, a sort of “it’s everywhere approach” in the function of education, they don’t even expect it. But other leaders in the field are now starting to talk like that, at least from an infrastructure viewpoint.

Former board Jud Murray said that it’s important for a district not to isolate itself from disadvantaged parts of the community in the pursuit of “limiting academic opportunities just to the more privileged students, in the hopes of ensuring higher test scores.”

“Our goal, when I was on the LISD board and now that I’m on the ETAA (East

Texas Advanced Academies) board, is that our district must actively seek out those students with economic or academic challenges, and help them achieve above and beyond their potential,” he said. “For me, that’s what a System of Great Schools district should be about.”

Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox agreed, adding that Longview ISD is a school district “who’s always on the cutting edge, and we’ll continue to be so ... through programs like System of Great Schools.”

“I’m sure there are plenty of districts across the state watching from the sidelines, not sure what to make of all this,” he said. “But time will show that much of this will become the new normal.”

Pastorek echoed Wilcox’s sentiment, and praised the Longview community for being so engaged in public education, adding, “this is an alive community!”

“There are districts where the leadership believes, no matter what, only a handful can truly be successful, and that for the broad middle all you can hope for is to be just adequate,” he said. “My belief is that if the system set up correctly, the broad middle will have just as much opportunity to achieve as those in the privileged minority. So, how do we create this environment where the most people are going in the right direction? That’s the challenge facing not just Longview ISD, but every school district.”

“It’s a testament to the quality education being provided by our excellent staff, our exceptional academic offerings, and the reputation of our students’ achievements, that these families are choosing to enroll their students in Longview ISD,” he said. “These aren’t moveins — though we certainly get quite a few of those each year — but these are residents of other communities, who are willing to drive to Longview for their children to attend our schools. That’s a big deal.”

Ron Kent, LISD Supervisor for Administrative and Pupil Services, said attendance and discipline records “have been checked for all students.”

“Principals have been given the information and the opportunity to make a recommendation on each student,”

he said.

Based on a “value-added” system and “achievement,” core subject area teachers with economically disadvantaged students showing exceptional or more than expected progress in core subject areas could receive about a $69 incentive or $100 incentive per student, depending on the level of progress. The campus distinction designation awards will give $200 per campus distinction to each full-time staff member at the school. Qualifying staff must be full-time and have an attendance rate of 97 percent.

Board members also approved accepting more than 500 non-resident students seeking transfer into the district.

Of the 504 students accepted, 395 (or 78 percent) cited “educational opportunities” at Longview ISD as their primary reason for transferring into the district.

“This proposed purchase is in conjunction with a planned expansion by AAON,” he added.

Parents shown how to navigate the path to college Longview High School parents wishing to navigate the road to college for their children can receive some help with sessions at LHS. On Tuesday, Sept. 24, Tieraney Beall, academic advisor, will explain the types of financial aid available to college bound students, including how to complete the FAFSA. Kay Ray, the scholarship coordinator, will have information about the ACT and SAT fall test dates for seniors and information about the ACT and SAT essays.

The session will take place at 6:30 p.m. outside the LHS College and Career Center on the second floor of the main building.

On Monday, Nov. 11, Representatives from over one hundred colleges, universities and technical school and the military will be present to answer questions. This is a great opportunity to be added to the schools’ mailing lists and to visit with college recruiters. The session will take place at 6:30 p.m. at Maud Cobb Activity Center.

On Wednesday, Jan. 15, Kay Ray and Linda Buie, dean of instruction, will explain the components of the

October 2019 PSAT score report. Next, Kay Ray and Tieraney Beall will explain all that juniors need to do during the spring semester so that they are ready to apply to college in the fall of their senior year. The session will take place at 6:30 p.m. outside the LHS College and Career Center on the second floor of the main building.

On Wednesday, Jan. 22, Kay Ray will explain how students can earn thousands in scholarships from local community organizations, businesses, churches and school organizations. Parents will also learn the importance of the student resume and the importance of letters of recommendation. The session will take place at 6:30 p.m. outside the LHS College and Career Center on the second floor of the main building.

FFA wins big at White Oak Livestock show What a fun day Longview FFA had on Saturday, August 24, at the White Oak Livestock show! Cooper Mayes lambs won 1st place in class 6 & 7. Yahir Gaona and Montayvion Craig competed in tough classes with their lambs. Kelli Owings won first place with her pig in class 11 and competed in the Grand Drive. Coopers goat also won his class and was named Grand Champion! We all learned a lot and will be in the barn daily working towards our goal! Congratulations to these members!

South Ward students show their green thumb on campus South Ward is planting the seeds of knowledge and growth as they start a new year. After a student assembly to “Plant a Seed of Greatness” teachers and students discussed how goals setting is like planning a garden.

“You have to think about how you want it to look look like,” said Joaquin Guerrero, South Ward Principal. “You have to plant the seed by setting your goals, you have to water it by working every day toward your goals, and you have to weed your garden by cutting out negative self-talk, or listening to doubts from others or getting distracted from their goals.”

Then, each grade planted a seed in the campus garden in the front of the campus that faces Mobberly.

Guerrero said he loves this event because it incorporates concrete learning with abstract concepts as well as incorporating life sciences as is taught in Montessori.

“It also provides actions from students to beautify their neighborhood school as a point of pride.”

The “Seeds of Greatness” will be an ongoing project that unifies the students in an effort to improve the environment around them.

LUFKIN — On a humid night in Abe Martin Stadium the state-ranked Longview Lobos outlasted Lufkin in non-district action.

The rivalry game got off to a dramatic start, with Lufkin calling a trick play that resulted in an 89-yard touchdown pass and a quick 7-0 lead for the Panthers.

Longview is powered by a suffocating defense led by Tyshawn Taylor, Sawyer Goram-Welch, Andrew Beltran, Robert Pierce, and Cedric Smith. The defense blanked Marshall and held John Tyler to only 200 yards of total offense.

The Lobos dynamic offense features record-breaking quarterback Haynes King, halfback Kaden Meredith, wideouts Kyas Moore and Kaden Kearbey, and an offensive line anchored by senior center Parker Cox.

Lady Lobo Volleyball hitting the court hard Lady Lobo Volleyball hosted White Oak on Friday, September 6. Lady Lobos won 3-1 in match play. This followed an awesome day for the Lady Lobos on Saturday, August 24! Varsity won the bronze bracket at the Tyler invitational tournament.

Way to fight back ladies! The Freshmen Team fought extremely hard all day during the Pine Tree JV/Freshmen Tournament.

Lobo tennis continues their winning streak Longview continued their undefeated streak in district, outperforming Rockwall-Heath. Varsity vs Rockwall-Heath won at 12-7 and Longview defeating Rockwall-Heath 7-7, making their overall record 3-0 district for the season so far.

Standouts for the Lobos were AJ Jagarlamudi, Kelsey Quiett, Gowri Rangu, Rachna Edalur, Elizabeth Wall & the number one player for the Lobo Girls, Simran Kortikere, who all won both their doubles and Singles matches. Longview will play a double header on Saturday vs Corsicana and Lindale at Cascades Country Club In tyler.

Lobo Cross Country earns top spots The Lobo Boys and Girls Cross Country team competed in Atlanta, Tx. The boys finished 2nd overall, with Alberto Ramirez finishing second with a time of 19.00 for the tough 5K. On the girls side, they finished first with Isabel Breaux coming in 1st with a time of 13.

“Playing Lufkin is always competitive, and I was glad to see the fight our guys showed tonight,” said head coach John King.

Haynes King completed 20-of-36 passes for 286 yards, targeting seven different receivers. Of the receiving corps. it was Kyas Moore leading the way, bringing in seven catches for 103 yards, with Kaden Kearbey helping out with five catches for 76 yards.

The Lobos finished with 169 yards on the ground, led by talented junior Kaden Meredith who had 75 yards on the evening and a touchdown run. Helping out in the running game was Markevion Haynes and Haynes King, both with scoring runs.

Defensive standouts included Tyshawn Taylor, Sawyer Goram-Welch, Andrew Beltran and Cedric Smith, with new kicker Antonio Onofre connecting on a 37-yard field goal in the first half.

Despite a valiant effort by Marshall to control the ball and the clock, it was the Longview Lobos running away with a dominating 53-0 homecoming win at Lobo Stadium.

A packed crowd saw Marshall hold the vaunted Lobo offense to a 0-0 stalemate

through the first quarter, but it was a 23-yard touchdown run from Kaden Meredith that broke the game open in the second quarter.

“I think Marshall came out with a good game plan, showed us something we hadn’t seen yet,” said Coach John King. “But I think our team rose to the occasion and did what we had to do to come away with the win.”

Despite the Marshall defense was keying on speedy halfback Kaden Meredith, the Lobo offense rolled up more than 200 yard on the ground. Senior signal-caller Haynes King had a solid night as well, hitting 11-of-17 passes for 208 yards and a 9-yard score to tight end Jhailon Braden. It was also another solid outing for wideout Kyas Moore, who pulled in five catches for 129 yards.

The Lobo defense was especially impressive, hold Marshall to under 100 total yards of offense. Standouts included Robert Pierce, Cedric Smith, and Tyshawn Taylor Lobo kicker Antonio Onofre also impressed, going “three for three” on a 45yard field goal, thanks to multiple timeouts being called by the opposing team.

TYLER — Defense led the way to a dominating 42-0 win over John Tyler in front of

a national audience on ESPN. Despite another slow start by the offense the Lobo defense held John Tyler to just 77 yards on the night, forcing the Lions to go 1-of-12 third-down conversions.

“Outside of just one or two plays, the defense had another terrific outing,” said Coach John King. “We had some mistakes on offense that kept us from being as successful as we should’ve been, but in the end we did what we had to do to come away with the win.”

King cited standout performances from Sawyer Goram-Welch and Drew Beltran on the defensive line, linebackers Tyshawn Taylor and Cedric Smith, and the entire secondary for putting Longview in a position to be successful all game.

While turnovers plagued the Lobo offense, Longview still managed to roll up more than 350 yards and 42 points.

It was Kaden Meredith again pacing all ballcarriers, rushing for 99 yards and two touchdows, with backfield support from Kevin Jones, Xavier Jimmerson and CJ Hopkins. Hayne King helped out with a 28-yard score of his own in the first quarter.

Longview travels across the state line this week to face Louisiana juggernaut West Monroe at Independence Stadium in Shreveport.

FOUNDATION Great Rewards grant program revealed I

n 1994, a cross-section of community members who support the Longview Independent School District created the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. to enrich and maximize the quality of classroom education in the Longview Independent School District. The Foundation’s Board of Directors, businesses, corporations, community members and LISD employees who support the Foundation believe that creative and innovative approaches to teaching can benefit our students and increase student achievement. Because of this belief, the Foundation has created a permanent endowment fund to provide annual funding for the Great Rewards for Great Ideas Grant Program.

The 2020 Great Rewards for Great Ideas Grant Program, specifically designed for classroom teachers, counselors, librarians, and campus nurses across Longview, will fund creative teaching approaches and innovative projects with the hope that the best ones will serve as pilot projects for broader implementation. Funding not otherwise available for such projects will be funded from $100 up to $2,500.

The Longview ISD Foundation announced the 25th annual Great Rewards for Great Ideas Grant Program at the Longview ISD convocation in August. The Foundation is now accepting applications through Monday, December 9, 2019. Grant recipients will be

announced in March 2020.

Applicants may submit a paper application or submit an online application at www.lisdfoundation.org. The Foundation’s grants committee will consider how compatible the applicant’s project/program is with the district’s goals, the school’s or department’s mission or philosophy, campus improvement plan, or district improvement plan when making grant funding decisions.

The grants committee’s goal is to fund innovative programs which stimulate thought

and student achievement or address needs, challenges, and concerns unique to the applicant’s campus.

Memorial scholarship recepients announced Each May, the Longview ISD Foundation awards scholarships through its Lobo Memorial Fund to Longview High School seniors.

In January, Emily Myers, Longview High School alumnae and chair of the Lobo Scholarship Fund committee within the Foundation, announces the scholarship to Longview High School seniors.

After reviewing and assessing the applications, the students’ essays, resumes, transcripts, and letters of recommendation, Mrs. Myers and the Lobo Scholarship Fund committee determine the scholarship recipients.

At the Longview High School Scholarship Awards for the Class of 2019 held in May 2019, Mrs. Myers awarded $1,000 scholarships to Alexis Freeman, freshman at Stephen F. Austin State University; Emma Grace Frierson, freshman at Texas A&M University; Mary Claire Henderson, freshman at The

University of Texas at Austin; Savannah Humphrey, freshman at Texas Tech University; Lily Long, freshman at Texas A&M University; Brady Miller, freshman at The University of Texas at Austin; Keithan

Ross, freshman at Prairie View A&M University; and Mouminatou Traore, freshman at The University of Texas at Arlington.

The Foundation solicits donations throughout the year

to fund these scholarships.

Campus Initiative Grant Program kicks off The Board of Directors of the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. has proudly announced the twelfth annual Campus Initiative Grant Program. Working with campus educators, LISD principals can apply for funding up to $5,000 for initiatives unique to the individual campuses. These initiatives must complement and align with Campus Improvement Plans and the LISD District Improvement Plan.

The Longview ISD Foundation is proud to offer this grant initiative that will provide additional funding to maximize educational opportunity in Longview ISD for all students. The

Foundation believes that this grant program, targeting overall campus improvement, complements the Foundation’s annual Great Rewards for Great Ideas Program, now in its twenty-fifth year.

To date, the Longview ISD Foundation has funded forty-one Campus Initiative Grants for a total of $116,455.76.

Campus Initiative Grant applications are due to Kay Ray, executive director, by Monday, December 9, 2019.

The Foundation will announce the Campus Initiative Grant recipients in March 2020.

Academic Field Trip Grant for fourth, fifth grade students The 2019-2020 John W. Harrison, Jr. Academic Field Trip Grant will fund academic field trips for fourth and fifth grade students directly related to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills and student expectation for the subject and grade. Funding not otherwise available for such projects will be funded up to $7,000.00.

The Foundation will partner with the campus’s PTA, PTO, campus community partner, or other campus funding source through the budget to ensure that the trip is funded as needed.

The academic field trip grants are due to Kay Ray, Foundation executive director, by Wednesday, October 16, 2019, so that funding can be granted by December 1 to facilitate campus winners making their travel plans.

In February 2019, fourth and fifth graders from Hudson PEP Elementary School visited the Perot Museum in Dallas with funding from this grant. They specifically focused on enhancing the science instruction they had received in class. Through interactive displays and learning scavenger hunts at the Perot, these students returned to school with a deeper understanding of the scientific

concepts they had learned in class.

Also in February, fifth graders from South Ward Elementary School also visited the Perot Museum in Dallas with funding from this academic field trip grant. Led by their teachers, the fifth graders focused on enhancing their math instruction. Again, through the creative, hands-on exhibits, the South Ward students returned to school with enhanced understanding.

The Foundation looks forward to receiving many grant applications from across the district and is proud to provide funding for this second annual grant program.

While Jeremy Cotham was researching information for his book “Friday Night Howl,” the 100+ history of Lobo Football, he interviewed Charles LeBus whose father Frank LeBus was the starting QB for the 1937 State Championship Team. During the interview Charles mentioned that he thought he might have some old 8mm films from 1937-1940 in his family’s collection.

Are your schools making a good first impression?

As back-to-school quickly approaches, the excitement for a new school year is growing.

Soon, we’ll be met with the hum of school buses in the morning. The shouts of students as they reunite with friends after a long summer.

The excitement of fall sports and meet-the-teacher nights.

This feeling of annual renewal and opportunity is among the many reasons I chose to become an educator.

But there’s a flipside to back-toschool.

Along with all the excitement and anticipation, there is trepidation about what’s in store for the year ahead–not just among students, but also among parents, faculty, staff, school leaders, and administrators.

It’s impossible to predict what challenges will arise on any given day, in any given school. But in these pre-opening days and weeks, the tone you set will go a long way toward ensuring a successful and productive year.

When we asked school leaders to identify their most important strategic initiatives, three of the top responses involved improving relationships with community members. Building community trust (90%), engaging external stakeholders (80%), and providing high-quality customer experiences for all stakeholders (76%) were identified as key initiatives.

But our research also revealed a gaping lack of confidence among school leaders, with just around half saying they were very confident in their ability to deliver on these initiatives.

If these numbers are any indication, you probably understand that making a good first impression on students, their families, and staff before and during backto-school helps you build trust and nurture critical relationships.

You might also be concerned about how to do this.

The right approach requires two key elements: 1) strong preparation and 2) a customer-service mindset.

BE PREPARED

According to the school leaders we work with, at least half of the inbound questions and concerns received from community members come around back-to-school, during the “August onslaught” through early fall.

These weeks leading up to the first days of school represent a great opportunity to anticipate and prepare for these inevitable challenges. As a former superintendent and someone who spends

his days traveling the country and meeting with school leaders, I can’t tell you the number of horror stories I’ve heard from friends and colleagues.

When I led school districts in Louisiana and Michigan, I made it a point to listen to and understand the concerns of parents, students, staff, and community members early on in the year–and to ensure my staff was prepared to effectively meet those needs.

Among our core areas of focus headed into a new school year: 1. Make clear communication a goal from Day 1 Everybody talks about the importance of clear communication.

But when you’re trying to serve the needs of thousands of students, and tens of thousands of parents, clear communication is often anything but easy. Make sure students, parents, and community members have a safe and easy way to reach you–and hold yourself and your team accountable for responding in a timely fashion. Those responses will pay huge dividends down the road. Remember: Early communication is important. Make sure you’re reaching out to parents and students in the weeks, even months prior to the first day.

2. Promote and nurture quality instruction There is no substitute for quality instruction. But sometimes it takes us a while to get into a good rhythm. Plan ahead for continuity and avoid at all costs having substitutes early in the year. The instructional and academic goals for the school year should be clear and widely shared with students, staff, and parents–and made available to the entire community.

3. Articulate a clear plan Success and expectations go hand in hand. Make sure students know what is expected of them on a daily basis. Make sure parents understand their role too. Work on that school-home connection, and give everybody, students and parents alike, a clear set of goals to aspire to. Make them aware of the opportunities to work in partnership with your school through PTA, athletic boosters, or tutoring programs.

4. Ensure that strong leadership is in place Principals, teachers, and staff set the tone for your schools, especially early in the year. Make sure that all staff are present and welcoming on Day 1.

5. Demonstrate a visible commitment to security Security provides peace of mind; it also frees the mind to focus on school. Provide visible evidence throughout your schools that security is a top priority.

Schedule drills and other events to set the tone, and clearly share

your security plans and goals with parents.

6. Welcome people into your buildings and onto your campuses How your schools look and feel matters. Closely evaluate

each of your school buildings. Are your buildings physically in good shape? Do they have curb appeal?

Are your hallways and classrooms clean and uncluttered? This “stuff” really matters to parents.
