TSA TAKES NATIONALS
Lobo tech students take on ‘best of the best’
L
ongview High School technology and engineering students finished near the top of four different categories during the Technology Student Association national competition June 22-26 in Atlanta, Ga.
The teams consisted of 27 students from Longview High and Foster Middle School who competed in various skill and verbal competitions, as well as elected offices. Payton Schaap campaigned for TSA National Treasurer and Ejehi Ihionkhan was inducted as the Texas TSA President. “This National conference was incomparable in countless ways,” Ihionkhan said. “I was elected to lead 40,000 individuals as Texas TSA President this past April. I used this opportunity to augment my leadership skills and affirm my belief that leadership is a portal to every career.” Career Technology instructor Mr. Charles Mosley expressed great pride that 15 of his 16 LHS National qualifiers advanced to the finals. Winning the silver medal in Chapter Team competition was the Lobo TSA squad of Carly Snyder, Ejehi Ihionkhan, Brady Miller, Hyndavi Jatavalabhula, Payton Schaap, and Magdalena Shen. Finishing in the Top 5 in the entire nation in the country was the Debating Technological Issues team of Justin Melendez and Hyndavi Jatavalabhula (4th Place overall), and the BioTechnology Design team of Samantha Taylor, Kathryn Roper, Natalie Serrato, Payton Schaap, Nitin Rangu, and Ben Taylor (5th Place overall). Rounding out the Top 10 finalists was the Children’s Stories team of Justin Melendez, Diana Hernandez, Maria Quintero, and Vanessa Monsivais (8th Place overall). But it wasn’t just the powerhouse high school team that brought home Nationals gold, but Foster Middle School team members. Mrs. Melissa Swallow, Middle school TSA sponsor, said 10 of Foster’s 11 competitors advanced to the National finals. Bringing home the bronze medal in Chapter Team was Gowri Rangu, Mathew Guck, Rachna Edalur, Neha Nirmal, Otibhor Ihionkhan, and Nitya Jagarlamudi. Gowri Rangu also earned 3rd in Prepared Speech. Reaching the National semifinals was the Technology Bowl team of Rachna Edalur, Matthew Guck, and Aditya Jagarlamudi; and the Electrical Applications team of Nitya Jagarlamudi and Iniabasi Ekpenyong. Top 10 finalists include a 4th Place finish from the Coding Team of Aditya Jagarlamudi and Gowri Rangu; a 6th Place finish by the Mechanical Engineering team of Matthew Guck, Rachna Edalur, Rylee Camp, Otibhor Ihionkhan, Mason LaMaster, and Iniabasi Ekpenyong. Thank you Dr. Camp, Welcome Mr. Tubb! Reardon, Stuart named Trustees greet newest member of board The Board of Trustees thanked departing member Dr. Mark Camp during Monday night’s regular meeting, and welcomed newly-
elected Place 1 representative Michael Tubb. Board members each, in turn, expressed sincere appreciation for Dr. Camp’s service to the district and leadership. Dr. Camp spoke from the dais, wishing his successor well, and thanking the community for entrusting him with making decisions on behalf of the public since being elected in 2012. “I just want to extend sincere thanks and gratitude to students, employees, district residents, area businesses, and volunteers who make Longview ISD such an exceptional school district,” he said. “It has been my pleasure to serve you, and I wish you all continued success in the future.” Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox praised Dr. Camp’s tenure for his “years of commitment to our students and education professionals.” “It has been a pleasure to work with Dr. Mark Camp these past six
Teachers of the Year
Whitney Reardon and Kendra Stuart have been selected as Longview ISD’s 2018 elementary and secondary Teachers of the Year. Reardon teaches at Johnston-McQueen Elementary, while Stuart teaches at Judson Middle. The pair will represent the district for the next year, and in June will be considered for Region VII Teacher of the Year. Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox said the district is “extremely honored to recognize those named Teacher of the Year for each campus – the first step in the 2018 Texas Teacher of the Year selection process.” “It’s also significant because the selections were made by their peers,” he said. “These individuals are outstanding educators whose efforts and example have inspired their students, their colleagues, and the communities they serve.” Campus Teachers of the Year are chosen during the latter part of each school year by their principals and professional colleagues.
