“Different campuses celebrate honor rolls in different ways, sometimes with a certificate or other type of recognition,” said LISD Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox. “At the same time, we’re glad to recognize the superlative students by featuring them on our website as well as our district newspaper. ach semester, Longview ISD releases the names of our honor roll students for students achieving academic honors. These distinctions are typically organized into the Honor Roll (all grades As and Bs) and Honor Roll with Distinction (all As).
District-wide science fair set for Feb. 17
Students will compete to qualify for regional distinction Longview ISD students in grades 5th through 12th will meet Feb. 17 at Lobo Coliseum for the annual STEM Fair (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). The STEM Fair starts at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 3 p.m. with an awards ceremony. Students will compete for a chance to advance to the Regional Science Fair in Kilgore. Lobo Coliseum is located on the campus of Longview High School, 201 East Tomlinson Parkway. The district will also host a Junior STEM Fair for 3rd-4th grade students on Friday, Feb. 16 at Forest Park Middle School. For more information please call (903) 446-2526.
Board approves 2018-19 calendar
The school year is far from over, but next year’s schedule is now in place. Classes will begin Aug. 27, 2018 and end May 31, 2019. Important dates for next school year include: • Aug. 27 – First day for students • Sept. 3 – Labor Day (observed) • Nov. 19-23 – Thanksgiving Break • Dec. 24-Jan. 4 – Winter Break • Jan. 21 – Dr. Martin Luther King Day (observed) • March 18-22 – Spring Break • April 19 – Good Friday (observed) • May 27 – Memorial Day (observed) • May 31 – Final day of school • June 3, 4 – Bad weather makeup days (if needed) Longview ISD Board of Trustees approved the 2018-19 District Calendar during their Dec. 11 regular meeting. Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox said state legislation prevents schools from starting prior to the fourth Monday in August. “Obviously, we want to be sensitive to family schedules, especially during the holiday months, but we have limited flexibility due to the legislature,” he said. “That said, we feel like this calendar provides the most accommodation for our students, staff, and their families.”

Mack, Ishihara to host Town Meeting
District 4 City Councilwoman Kristen Ishihara has scheduled a Town Meeting in partnership with Longview ISD Place 3 Trustee Dr. Chris Mack. Set for 6 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Winterfield United Methodist Church (2616 Tryon Rd.), the dual-purpose meeting will include opportunities to discuss issues related to the City of Longview or Longview ISD. Town Meetings are an excellent opportunity for citizens and council members to discuss issues facing the community within a casual setting.
