Dr. Jennifer Bailey hopes to ‘Lead, Love, Learn’
Johnston-McQueen Elementary Principal Dr. Jennifer Bailey may be a newcomer to Longview ISD, but she’s no stranger to academic leadership. A seasoned teacher and administrator, Dr. Bailey hopes to help inspire her students and staff to soar into success. Longview ISD spokeswoman Elizabeth Ross sat down with Dr. Bailey last month to talk about her goals and vision for JohnstonMcQueen Elementary. When did you decide you wanted to work in education? “I’ve always enjoyed school, and like many children, I pretended to have “class” with my stuffed animals. However, I think the major moment was when I was in high school, as I umpired little league baseball and coached the little league cheer squad. I just so enjoyed working with kids and seeing the impact that positive and supportive relationships had on so many. I was a kid that thrived off of teachers connecting with me at school, so those personal experiences kept driving me back to making a difference for students. As an educator, we are the catalyst for our students, and I was fortunate to recognize that as a student myself.” What was your most rewarding moment in education? “That is a tough one because there are so many. I have been fortunate to be a part of many accolades
with state championships through UIL Academics and big gains in campus improvement, but it all comes back to seeing students be successful. It doesn’t take a trophy or a recognition to feel that reward; it often comes through the small, everyday moments when I see a student overcome an obstacle or get a concept that may have been daunting previously. As an instructional leader, I believe that if my teachers are supported and prepared, then that will directly lead to my students being supported and prepared. So, that reward also comes in the celebrations in which my teachers feel confident and excited about just a really great day or seeing a student achieve a tremendous accomplishment.” Who has been your role model/ mentor through this journey? How have they shaped this path? “I have been fortunate to have so many, and I could probably bore everyone with talking at length about that! But, there are two who have definitely stood out that have coached me, believed in me, and have given me so many tools Principal|Continued to page 3
Nitin Rangu named National LOBO ROYALTY Merit semifinalist
Longview High School senior Nitin Rangu has been named as a National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalist. Nitin is among 16,000 students nationwide – less than 1 percent of all U.S. high school seniors – to receive the honor, and he is competing for a share of more than $32 million in college scholarships. The field of semifinalists was narrowed from about 1.5 million high school juniors, who entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. “It is thrilling to be considered a semifinalist for this great honor,” Nitin said. The field of will be narrowed in February, with three types of National Merit Scholarships awarded in the spring of 2019.
Malaika Pencheon, a four year duchess for the homecoming court, was crowned homecoming queen Sept. 14th prior to the Lobos game against John Tyler. Her dedication to Lobo Nation was shining as she came directly from Lobo Coliseum in her Lady Lobo Volleyball uniform just in time to accept her crown.
