ammy David Satterwhite, 68, of Longview, entered Heaven’s gates on Saturday, Nov. 14.

Sam was born on November 30, 1951, to Frances and Nolon Satterwhite in Marshall and soon moved to Longview. Sam graduated from Longview High School in 1970 where he was very involved in student government and other school organizations. Following graduation, Sam attended Kilgore College and the University of Texas.

I have been amazed at locally owned restaurants who were obviously negatively impacted by the virus step up to provide free gratitude meals for first responders.

Through it all, I have been so proud of Longview. I am proud that even when you are hurting, confused or scared, you can lend a hand to someone else who feels the same way as you.

I am proud that you don masks to protect your neighbors. I am proud that you have been and are considerate of those around you by providing food and support from a distance. I have always known these things about Longview, but it is true that times of adversity shows a man’s true character. Yours has surely shone brightly. Let’s keep up the good work.

Eastman is proud to honor the traditions and contributions of Black/African American people to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) in celebration of Black History Month. As part of that celebration, the company is sponsoring an oratorical contest. Chris Mack steps down from board after 21 years During the monthly board meeting on Monday, Nov. 16, Place 3 Trustees Dr. Chris Mack retired from the LISD Board.

His resignation was announced by Place 4 Trustee Ginia Northcutt as she read his resignation letter at the start of the meeting as Dr. Mack was not present.

“I have been on the board for 21 years, and I have been thinking of stepping down for a few years now,” Dr. Mack said. “I’ve enjoyed my time with the district. I’ve enjoyed working with teachers, administrators and all of the employees. But now it’s time for me to spend time with my family.”

Dr. Mack stated that he

stayed on recently so that he could hand his daughter her high school diploma which he has now down. More recently, he stayed on long enough so that the school district would

not have to spend time with a special election to fill his spot.

For his time as a board member for LISD, Dr. Mack can easily recall two actions that he is proud of. The first

was the 2008 bond the district passed that was almost $267M for renovations and rebuilding of district facilities.

The second was the hiring of Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox.

“James is one of the best superintendents in the country. I have nothing negative to say about him,” Dr. Mack said. “He has been great for the school district.”

From big decisions like the 2008 bond approval and hiring Dr. Wilcox, to the small decisions that had lesser known impacts, Dr. Mack has been a large part of the districts success and the district thanks him for everything that he has done for both the students and the employees.

Board of Trustees adjust ‘bonus’ pay due to COVID-19 The Longview Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a series of amendments to the Longview Incentive For Teachers (LIFT) program during their regular meeting Monday, Nov. 16th.

Dr. James Hockenberry, LISD Assistant Superintendent of District Services, said the purpose of these amendments is to provide a means by which the program can continue for the current school year, despite the complications caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“The emphasis on closing the achievement gaps will remain by staying focused and committed to the economically disadvantaged student population’s academic data,” he said. “Although it is recommended that we follow the Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) model for calculation of growth, it is not recommended that we include ‘all’ students in the determination of ‘levels,’ as does the TIA.” The temporary LIFT model calculations will follow the Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) formula using a combination of weighted 2017-2020 academic data to determine teacher “levels,” with award distinction funds using a threeyear average for the campuses and district for years 2017-2019 Designations. The award is

Designed to help close the achievement gap between low socio-economic and middle-income students, today the Longview Incentive for Teachers (LIFT) Pay for Performance Program includes three award models, and has proven instrumental in retaining high-quality educators.

determined by the employee’s place of employment at the conclusion of the 2019-2020 year.

In addition, eligibility for the program is earned by being a current 2020-21 employee of the district, who was employed at least 90 days of the 2019-20 calendar year (or one full semester).

Dr. Hockenberry said the district will be waiving the attendance rule for the 2019-2020 year only, and no appeals will be accepted this year, “since most of the data being used for LIFT awards is from prior years.”

“Per pupil, and distinction amounts, will remain the same

as the 2018-19 school year distribution,” he said.

Longview awarded more than $2.4 million in LIFT incentive pay for achieving teachers around this time last year, with a few of the very highest-performing teachers receiving nearly $20,000 in their December 2019 paychecks.

The program is 100 percent funded through local funds from the fund balance, as approved by the LISD Board of Trustees.

The amount of incentive pay for Longview ISD teachers has increased dramatically since the $350,000 awarded in 2014-15, just five years ago.

Board members also approved the purchase of 15 new school buses from Houston-based Longhorn Bus Sales at a total cost of $1,497,345.

Mr. Joey Jones, LISD Assistant Superintendent for Finance, said the district currently owns buses that “cost the district more in maintenance than is fiscally responsible to spend.”

“By exercising an option to purchase new buses, the district could significantly upgrade the existing fleet and reduce maintenance expenses,” he said.

Trustees authorized the issuance of Maintenance Tax Notes for the purchase, accepting a bid from Houston-based Amegy Bank for a rate of 1.180 percent.

Trustees thank Ava Welge, welcome Brett Miller Longview ISD Board of Trustees thanked departing member Mrs. Ava Welge during Monday night’s regular meeting, and welcomed newly-elected Place 2 representative Mr. Brett Miller.

Board members each, in turn, expressed sincere appreciation for Mrs. Welge’s service to the district and leadership.

Mrs. Welge spoke from the dais, wishing her successor well, and thanking the community for entrusting her with making decisions on behalf of the public since being elected in 2017.

Trustees canvassed the results of the Place 2 board election between Mrs. Welge and Mr. Miller. Final results released by Gregg County elections officials show Mr. Miller earning 1,881 votes to Mrs. Welge’s 905 votes.

Place 4 incumbent Mrs. Ginia Northcutt was unopposed

and will serve another threeyear term on the board.

Board members administered the oath of office to Mrs. Northcutt and Mr. Miller, before reorganizing officers for the coming term.

Officers for the LISD trustees will be Mrs. Shan Bauer, board president; Mr. Michael Tubb, vice president; Mr. Ted Beard, secretary; and Mr. Brett Miller, vice secretary.

At the outset of the meet-

ing, Place 3 board member Dr. Chris Mack announced his resignation from the board. First elected to the board in 1993, Dr. Mack has served in various capacities, including as president. Chris and his wife Lisha are the parents of a daughter who graduated from Longview High in 2019.

The current Board of Trustees for Longview ISD is now Mr. Michael Tubb (Place 1), Mr. Brett Miller (Place 2), Mrs.

Ginia Northcutt (Place 4), Mrs. Shan Bauer (Place 5), Mr. Ted Beard (Place 6), and Dr. Troy Simmons (Place 7).

Serving as a link between the community and classroom, school board members are elected to establish the policies that provide the framework for public schools. LISD trustees are responsible for an annual budget of more than $78 million, over 8,000 students and nearly 3,000 staffers.

Charter announces Local Advisory Council members

Williams STEAM Academy, a local advisory council was formed through the Texas Council for International Studies (TCIS).

TCIS is the nonprofit organization that is operating six

Longview ISD charter schools: Hudson PEP Elementary School, Ned E. Williams Magnet Steam Academy, South Ward Elementary, Foster Middle School, Judson Steam Academy, and Longview High School. TCIS began working with these six schools on July 1, 2020. These six schools will all become officially authorized International Baccalaureate® World Schools.

Longview High School is currently authorized for the IB Diploma Programme. Additionally, it is

in the candidate stage to offer the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for ninth and tenth grade students and the Career-related Programme (CP) for the career and technology students. Hudson PEP, Ned E. Williams, and South Ward are in the candidate stage to become a Primary Years Programme IB World Schools.

Foster and Judson are also in the candidate stage to become authorized Middle Years Programme IB World Schools.

TCIS has a governing board whose members have a vast amount of knowledge and experience with IB. These board members will work with the six schools to ensure successful authorization of all the IB programmes and an ongoing implementation with fidelity.

The Local Advisory Council is comprised of members who have students enrolled in one of the schools or have a vested interest in the schools as well as in the

community. This ten-member Board will meet monthly to receive updates on the highlights of the campuses and the great works that are happening on each campus. They will also receive updates on the implementation of the International Baccalaureate on each campus.

The Local Advisory Council members may be contacted for information through the Longview ISD Community Relations department—Mr. Francisco Rojas. Using the Community Relations department will ensure consistency of information and a consideration for the Board members’ time and privacy. TCIS is contracting with Longview ISD for certain District services—one of which is the Community Relations department. Madisen Ellis overcomes the adversity, excels and achieves

W

hile a global pandemic has been hard on everyone, there are those who have still pushed forward to accomplish great things. Madisen Ellis, a recent graduate from Longview Early Graduation High School is one of those people.

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, Madisen graduated at age 21 from LEGHS. Not only did she return to high school and graduate, but she was on bed rest while finishing her courses due to being pregnant with her third child! She had a lot going on this year, but she kept with it and obtained her high school degree.

Leaving high school at age 17, Madisen started at LEGHS at 18 but left after finding out she was pregnant. A few years later, LEGHS principal Kristi Means contacted her and informed Madisen that it was her last year to finish her classes and earn her degree.

Due to the global pandemic, Madisen was able to take the classes online which made it much easier for her as a stay-at-home mother.

While she initially dropped out of LEGHS due to finding out that she was pregnant with her first child, Madisen returned to obtain her diploma to improve not only her life but that of her children.

LEGHS is for students 14 to 18 years old. Madisen was an exception due to her having completed and passed all state testing requirements and only in need of completing three more credits to graduate.

“Madisen is a highly intelligent young lady that can do whatever she sets her sights on. She let ‘life’ get in her way for a couple of years, but she veered back to her goal of becoming a high school graduate,” principal Means said. “She is a wife and a mother of three at age 21. What an amazing story and accomplishment!”

Madisen says that attending LEGHS was an amazing experience for her.

“Everyone actually cares about you. You aren’t just another statistic or paycheck to them, and in the world we live in today, that means a lot,” Madisen said.

As Madisen took her three classes online, her last year of high school was not the standard experience. This didn’t stop her from hav-

ing a good experience in education however as she enjoyed her English class and even had a teacher that she said was a huge help to her.

Madisen said that Mrs. Maguire assisted her throughout the LEGHS experience.

“She helped me with everything,” Madisen said. “Anytime I had a question, she was right there with the answer.”

Principal Means states that the school has high expectations for its students.

“We motivate our students to take classes that lead to workforce certifications. This will allow students to graduate and easily transition into the workforce,” Principal Means said.

“We offer TSI testing (dual credit or junior college entrance exam) as well as ASVAB testing (military entrance exam). We also have a strong partnership with Workforce Solutions of East Texas to place students in paid internships while in school and after graduation.”

For anyone who is eligible to earn their degree through LEGHS, Madisen strongly encourages them.

“It will be hard; I’m not going to lie. I wanted to give up so many times,” Madisen said. “But there is no greater feeling than when you get handed that diploma and you realize all of your hard work, all of your tears of frustration, they were all worth it in the end. You deserve the chance to change the cards you were dealt and prove to everyone that you can and will better yourself and your future. Even if it’s hard, even if you want to give up, keep fighting because you will feel so much better about yourself and be glad that you did this!”

Ordinarily, the Early Grad High School holds a graduation ceremony during LISD School Board Meetings, but due to COVID-19, they have been postponed to observe CDC guidelines. The campus averages around 130 graduates per year.

Students are currently enrolled in the following certification courses: Certified Nursing Assistant, Instrumentation and Electrical, Precision Machining, Forklift, and Pharmacy Technician.

LISD is so proud of what Madisen has accomplished, as well as all of our other graduates!

Ashley Oden has been a vital part of Longview ISD since 2014 Another Judson spotlight is shining bright on a teacher that captures not only students’ minds but their hearts as well. In fact, she was a lead process champion for a national showcase winning Capturing Kids Heart campus.

Ashley Oden has been a part of Longview Independent School District for the past 7 years. She has been given many titles throughout her years including: UIL Co-Co-

ordinator, RPM Liaison, Mentor teacher, and a RTI Coordinator.

She was a 3rd Grade teacher at Bramlette Elementary from 20142020 before ODEN transitioning to a 6th Grade ELA teacher at Judson STEAM Academy.

In the short time she has

been on this campus, she has transformed these students into lifelong learners. Her student Israel Orona says, “I like everything about Mrs. Oden. She makes learning so much fun! She has changed the way I understand English Language Arts.”

Mrs. Oden was born in Lufkin before moving to Longview in 2003 to pursue a degree at Western Governors University where she received a Bachelors in Interdisciplin-

ary Studies and a Masters in Educational Instructional Design.

When she is not teaching, she enjoys reading a good book and spending time with her husband, Chris Oden, her son Alex Oden, and her adorable cat Pancakes. She will continue building her legacy at Judson STEAM Academy and she hopes that her students find a lifelong passion for reading and will always have the courage to be kind.

COVID-19 testing available for employees COVID-19 testing for employees will be available at the ESC every Wednesday for the time being, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Times may be subject to change but will accommodate another date if needed.

Employees must go to register.txrap idtest.org/ on a smartphone or computer and fill in the information. It will create a QR code that must be brought along either printed or in a photo on a cell phone.

The test takes approximately 15 minutes to process the test. In the event that the test comes back positive, the employee should not return to their office. Please have all personal belongings such as keys, handbags, etc. ready at the time so that a quick exit can be made. This is to slow the spread of the virus.

An employee that tests positive for COVID-19 is to quarantine for 10 days and obtain confirmation that they are free of the virus.

Specifically, he said Hudson PEP Elementary School bus routes are longer because the campus serves children across the district, not just in the neighborhood of the school.

Mr. Jones told the board that approval for issuance of maintenance tax notes to cover the cost of new bus purchases “will allow for the repayment over a fiveyear period, while having the new buses available by the start of the 2021-2022 school year.”

“The new buses include security cameras and a collision mitigation system which will ultimately prove to be a savings for the district,” Mr. Jones added.

LISD’s old buses will be sold at auction once the new fleet vehicles are delivered to the district.

IMPROVEMENTS

The board also approved the 2020-21 District Improvement Plan as well as Campus

Improvement Plans for all Longview ISD schools.

Each school year the principal of each campus — with the assistance of a committee — must develop, review, and revise the campus improvement plan.

Dr. Craig Coleman, LISD Chief Innovation Officer, said the purpose of this plan is to align goals, objectives, and strategies in order to improve student performance on the state’s student achievement indicators for all student populations, “as well as improve performance on any other performance measures for special needs populations.”

“The plans include setting performance objectives, determining the resources needed to implement the plan, and setting timeliness for reaching goals,” he said.

Mrs. Latitia Wilson, LISD Director of Planning & Analysis agreed, adding that the plan “serves as the blueprint for how the district and campuses will

actually address the needs identified during the Comprehensive Needs Assessment (CNA).”

“The Texas Education Code also requires that the trustees ensure that the district and all campus plans be developed, evaluated, and revised annually for the purpose of improving the performance of all student groups,” she said.

IMPROVEMENTS

Board members also approved amending the District of Innovation Plan that was originally approved by the board on March 4th, 2019.

Mr. John York, LISD Chief Human Resources Officer, explained that the amendment would allow an exemption to the Teacher Certification Statute, “granting local alternatives to educator certification for specific subject areas without having to submit a teacher certification waiver to the Texas Education Agency.”

“To best serve Longview ISD students, decisions on

certification will be handled locally,” he said. “The district’s goal will always be to hire certified teachers. However, flexibility is needed to hire teachers for hard-to-fill Languages Other Than English (LOTE) and Bilingual positions for PreK-12th grade.”

Mr. York said a teacher who has a four-year degree, fluent in a foreign language, and is able to pass a district assessment will be qualified to teach elementary and secondary LOTE or Bilingual classes.

By Linda Buie Executive Director Beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, all Longview ISD schools are being operated by three non-profit charter partners: Texas Council for International Studies (TCIS), East Texas Advanced Academies (ETAA), and Longview Education (LEAP).

The Texas Council for International Studies (TCIS) charter partner operates the following schools: Hudson PEP Elementary School, Ned E. Williams Steam Academy, South Ward Elementary School, Foster Middle School, Judson Steam Academy, and Longview High School. Longview High School is a fully authorized International Baccalaureate® (IB) World School and has been for the past twelve years.

Earning the prestigious IB World School authorization requires the school to complete a three-year process to demonstrate meeting the IB rigorous standards and practices. Longview High School is authorized for the IB Diploma Programme for juniors and seniors. Additionally, the high school is currently in the authorization process to offer the IB Middle Years

Programme (MYP) at the ninth and tenth grades. All five other schools in the TCIS charter are also in the authorization process to become authorized IB World Schools. The three elementary schools will offer the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), and the middle schools will offer the Middle Years Programme (MYP). Additionally, TCIS also operates eight schools in San Antonio ISD. Texas Council of International Studies was created as a nonprofit organization to focus on the successful implementation all four IB programmes: DP, MYP, PYP, and CP in the schools that it is partnering with. TCIS was founded by experienced IB educators and community leaders who have the goal of enhanced student success through IB. TCIS facilitates implementation of IB programmes through partnership agreements with IB schools and districts. ‘Asassin’s Creed’ improves its RPG elements Ubisoft presses further into the role-playing genre with ‘Valhalla’

By Dustin Taylor “Assassin’s Creed Valhalla” which released in November takes players to the age of Vikings, with a fun sense of exploration as their character Eivor travels to England to create a new kingdom.

“Valhalla” is a strong entry in the AC series, making some smart changes from recent releases. In “Origins” and “Odyssey,” players were treated to a more role-playing focused game compared to earlier AC games, as well as a loot system comparable to another Ubisoft franchise, “The Division.” “Valhalla” turns back from this design thankfully.

THE COMBAT

“Origins” was the first AC game to really drastically overhaul the combat in the series, with “Odyssey” tweaking it and improving upon it. “Valhalla” has tweaked it even more and I have to say that, out of the three, this is the one that I found the most enjoyable to use. From the way that special attacks are used, to the fact that dual-wielding is very versatile, Ubisoft is definitely headed in the right direction.

Honestly, I didn’t know I needed the ability dual-wield shields in my life, but now I know. I was quite surprised when realized it was possible.

From archery to going full berserker on enemies, the combat feels vastly improved upon. There is certainly still room for improvement, but “Valhalla” is certainly the best AC game to date in the combat department.

THE WORLD

As time has gone on, the maps in AC games have just continued to grow.

While big open worlds

can be great, this series has often pushed for too large of world maps and far too many side quests.

In “Origins”, it is easy to become overwhelmed with the sheer quantity and space right from the get-go. “Valhalla” has mostly fixed this issue. Instead of one giant open world, there are numerous maps that the player can choose to go to, but they begin in a starter area of sorts. This is done similarly to “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.”

Done this way, the game is not nearly as overwhelming from the start, and breaks it down to a more digestible format for the players.

As for sidequests, there are just a fraction here compared to “Origins” and they often feel more unique.

“The Witcher 3”

does a wonderful job of making the openworld feel alive, with each town feeling unique. “Valhalla” meanwhile feels fairly cookie-cutter in design. It would be great to have more locations that are memorable.

LOOT

As the series has moved more towards the RPG genre, the loot system was a negative, as players were always finding new loot—which meant more time in menus, clearing items out as well as having to give up a weapon that one enjoys simply because it is too low level now.

With “Valhalla,” there is only a handful of weapons and armor that can be leveled up. This

makes for a more invested experience.

PLAYTIME

“Valhalla” has issues, ranging from bugs and other problems in a video game, but the biggest would have to be the length. It can easily take 60 plus hours to beat, but “Valhalla” just doesn’t seem suited for that amount of time. Under 50 gameplay hours would be a much better fit with how the game is designed.

OVERALL

I can honestly say that “Valhalla” is the most fun I have had with the series in close to a decade. While it has its drawbacks, it is certainly one of the best “Assassin’s Creed” games yet.

His servant heart led him to take active roles in organizations such as Heartlight Ministries, Azleway Boys’ Ranch, Windridge Therapeutic Equestrian Center - organizations that serve at-risk youth and children with special needs. His passion for civic duty led him to serve on numerous boards in East Texas, including a 12-year tenure on the Longview ISD School Board.

OBITUARIES Longview ISD offers our most sincere condolences to our extended Lobo family Rhonda Richards A celebration of life service for Rhonda Richards was held on Friday, Nov. 6, in the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. Visitation was Thursday, Nov. 5.

Rhonda was born in Lewellen, Nebraska, on May 30, 1950, to Tom and Martha ArmRICHARDS strong. Rhonda was the second of three daughters. Spending her formative years, Rhonda lived on a farm with her family outside of Big Springs, Nebraska. Rhonda attended grade school with her sister and cousins in a one-room schoolhouse.

During this time, she developed her love for animals, and her gift of compassion took root.

Rhonda moved to Longview with her family in 1955, where she attended and graduated from Longview High School in 1968. While attending LHS, she was active in the Gregg County 4-H right beside her dad. She was also a member of the Future Nurses of America.

Rhonda attended Kilgore College and Texarkana College, earning her nursing license, which led to a 40-year career in the medical field starting at Good Shepherd Medical Center. One of Rhonda’s proudest moments was being among the first ten nurses who opened Longview Regional Medical Center. She also served the LISD

community as the campus nurse for Hudson Pep, South Ward, and Longview High School, from which she retired. During her time at Kilgore College, Rhonda’s younger sister Linda DeArmon introduced her to the love of her life David Richards. Rhonda and David enjoyed many adventures during their 49 years of marriage. Rhonda was blessed with two children Rebekah Reneé Richards and Paul Louis Richards. Rhonda is known as one of the best cooks in Longview.

She blessed her community for many years by baking bread, cakes, cookies, homemade candy, and creating four cookbooks. Rhonda and David joined Mobberly Baptist Church in 1982, where she lived out and demonstrated her lifelong faith in Jesus Christ through serving as a greeter in VBS and the children’s department.

Rhonda is preceded in death by her parents Tom and Martha Armstrong, sister Patricia Karrh, daughter Rebekah Renee Richards, brother-in-law David Towery, and nephew Daniel Towery. Those who cherish her memory and awaiting her reunion in heaven are her husband David Richards, son Paul Richards and wife Rachel. Her three grandchildren Justin, Abigail, and Bailey. Her sister Linda DeArmon and husband Larry, sister-in-law Lana Camp and husband Ricky, brothers-in-law Larry Karrh, and Glynn Richards and wife Sondra, five nieces, two nephews, along with many great-nieces, great-nephews, and a host of friends.

him, you always felt better about yourself and life in general,” Mr. Murray said. “His positive attitude infected everyone he met.”

Sam is survived by his wife, Travonda,of nearly 44 years; children and grandchildren: daughter Christi Amos, her husband Alan, and their children, Cason, Sawyer, and Avery; son Nicholas Satterwhite, his wife Kelley, and their children, Porter and Tate; and daughter Lindsey Wise, her husband Collin, and their children, Parker and Riley; his sister Sandra Stanley, and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents Frances and Nolon Satterwhite; father-in-law Troy Nicholas; and nephew Jerry Lansdale.

Services were held on Thursday, Nov. 19, in the Frances Chapel at Double S Ranch at 6260 FM 726, Diana. A private family burial was followed. John Elmo Boyd John E. Boyd, 85, of Gilmer, Texas passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Thursday, Oct. 22, after a long-term illness.

Mr. Boyd was born September 28, 1935, in BOYD Hallsville, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence (Red) and Valerie Boyd; a brother, Corbuck (Buck) Boyd; and three sisters, Edna Miller, Jean Carlisle, and Judy Rogers. He is survived by a sister, Ruby Smitherman and husband Claude of Longview, Texas; three sons, Hunter Boyd and his wife Kim of Longview, Toby Boyd of Gilmer, and Galyn Boyd and his wife Carlene of Gilmer; five grandchildren, Shea Young and husband Jimmy of Conway, AR, Crystal Boyd of Hallsville, Trent Boyd and wife Amanda of Gladewater, TX, Shana Trussell and husband Jamie of Collierville, TN, and Shelby Rutland and husband Josh of Dallas, TX; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Boyd served 31 years with the Longview Police Department beginning on December 3, 1966 and retiring as a sergeant on December 31, 1997. Mr. Boyd made an impact on many young lives working security at Longview and Pine Tree High Schools for years. He also spent many summers coaching his sons in Dixie League Baseball and led several teams to the Longview City Championships. Mr. Boyd “Pops” loved singing funny tunes and playing the harmonica to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved working outside, growing roses, and enjoying afternoons swinging with his beloved dogs.

The family expresses their appreciation to his dedicated caregivers, Angela Yahweh, Linda Melton, Gladys Barker, and Betty Nelson for their love and support.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Welch Funeral Home in Longview.

Burial followed at Grace Hill Cemetery.

FOUNDATION ‘Great Reward for Great Ideas’ offered by Foundation

By Kay Ray In 1994, a cross-section of community members who support the Longview Independent School District created the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. to enrich and maximize the quality of classroom education in the Longview Independent School District. The Foundation’s Board of Directors, businesses, corporations, community members and LISD employees who support the Foundation believe that creative and innovative approaches to teaching can benefit our students and increase student achievement. Because of this belief, the Foundation has created a permanent endowment fund to provide annual funding for the Great Rewards for Great Ideas Grant Program.

The 2021 Great Rewards for Great Ideas Grant Program,

specifically designed for classroom teachers, counselors, librarians, and campus nurses across Longview, will fund creative teaching approaches and innovative projects with the hope that the best ones will serve as pilot projects for broader implementation. Funding not otherwise available for such projects will be funded from $100 up to $2,500.

The Longview ISD Foundation has now announced the 26th annual Great Rewards for Great Ideas and is accepting applications through Tuesday, Dec. 1. Grant recipients will be announced in March 2021.

Campus Initiative grant announced

By Kay Ray The Board of Directors of the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. proudly announces the fourteenth annual Campus Initiative Grant Program. Working with campus educators, LISD principals can apply for funding up to $5,000 for initiatives unique to the individual campuses.

These initiatives must complement and align with Campus Improvement Plans and the LISD District Improvement Plan.

The Longview ISD Foundation is proud to offer this grant initiative that will provide additional funding to maximize educational opportunity in Longview ISD for all students.

The Foundation believes that this grant program, targeting overall campus improvement, complements the Foun-

dation’s annual Great Rewards for Great Ideas Program, now in its twenty-sixth year.

To date, the Longview ISD Foundation has funded forty-six Campus Initiative Grants for a total of $136,673.08.

Campus Initiative Grant applications are due to Kay Ray, executive director, by Tuesday, Dec. 1.

The Foundation will announce the Campus Initiative Grant recipients in March 2021.

Since May 1996, the Foundation has funded 716 grants through the Great Rewards for Great Ideas Program, returning $780,885.75 to Longview ISD classrooms, enabling innovative teachers, counselors, librarians, and nurses to create new educational programs or to enhance existing ones so that they can provide the best instruction possible to all students. These grants have funded programs and projects for students of all ability levels and in a variety of disciplines. In addition to strengthening academics, the grants have also funded projects in music, art, technology, character education, health and physical education, guidance and counseling, and STEAM education.
