How to reopen the American mind

Many colleges and universities are now fighting for survival.

Even before the pandemic upended university budgets, many schools faced challenges — falling enrollments, reduced public funding and the prospect of corporate restructuring. Now liberal arts colleges are shutting down at even higher rates, and job losses at colleges are multiplying (nonprofit private and public institutions shed an estimated 337,000 jobs from February to August, according to federal data). Some predict that unless Congress passes a new stimulus bill with aid for higher education,

If the university did not continue to be valued above all for its capacity to introduce America’s future leaders to a robust dialogue about the virtuous life and the just society, he warned, it was clear what other masters it would come to serve.

We can help slow down the nervous system further by sensing the lower parts of the body, such as the sit bones and the feet, which allows the nervous system to settle and regulate itself. You can take a few moments at the beginning of class for this practice or you can use it to help ground students during a discussion, perhaps when you notice that tensions are rising. Students can then begin to perceive what is happening in the room through the lens of regulation, rather than through the more limited lens of a survival response.

All six TCIS schools—Hudson PEP Elementary School, Ned E. Williams Steam Academy, South Ward Elementary School, Foster Middle School, Judson Steam Academy, and Longview High School—are participating in the City of Longview Food Drive in preparation for the food distribution at Maude Cobb Convention Center during the week of Thanksgiving. Schools are encouraging students to bring canned or dried food items for the next two weeks to the schools. Different schools are hosting contests among classes to see which class can bring the most food. Longview High School is hosting a contest among clubs and organizations to conduct the drive.

LHS Theatre Production

The LHS Theatre Department will perform “Into The Woods” for the general public on Thursday, November 12 at 7 p.m., Saturday, November 14 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, November 15 at 2 p.m.. Performances will be in Mickey Melton Auditorium. Tickets are $8. Masks are required for the audience. The Theatre Department will sell masks for $8 and the auditorium will be sectioned off for social distancing.

DISTRICT WIDE • International Baccalaureate project partners with “We Help Two” and sells “funky socks” to help supply legs and feet to amputees all over the world.

• LISD schools earned 40 total distinctions on state accountability ratings, an increase from 34 earned last year, and the highest in the region.

• Each year HUNDREDS of out-of-district students transfer INTO Longview Independent School District, citing “education opportunities” as their reason.

• Local corporate partnerships with Eastman and Komatsu and Longview Manufacturing Academy.

• Went totally ‘green’ on all building projects resulting in a $200,000 award from SWEPCO for energy conservation.

LONGVIEW HIGH • Longview High School celebrated a class of over 100 International Baccalaureate Diploma students for 201920.

• The senior IB Diploma students have all completed at least 150 hours of service learning activities, culminating over 6500 hours of community service for 2019-20.

• The IB students participated in the campus service learning project, We Help Two, and were able to sponsor 5 clients with prosthetic legs in developing countries.

• Longview High School began the application process to become an IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) school and to offer the IB Career-Related Programme school.

• Longview High School graduated 51 seniors who will also graduate with Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degrees from Kilgore College for 2019-20.

• Additionally, 80 seniors graduated with at least 24 hours of college credit.

• For the 2019-2020 school year, 594 unduplicated LHS students took a total 7,950 credit hours. This averages slightly more than 12 hours each. These numbers are for hours taken at Kilgore College. Other students took hours through Stephen F. Austin University, University of Texas, and LeTourneau.

LONGVIEW FIGHTS HARD Lobos edged late by Highland Park, 18-13

T

he highly-anticipated District 7-5A matchup between Longview and Highland Park was a close game for four quarters, with penalties and miscues proving costly for the Lobos.

Highland Park escaped Lobo Stadium with a hard-fought 18-13 win, remaining undefeated in district play. Longview fell to 5-2 on the season, and 2-1 in district play.

The Lobo defense kept the Highland Park run game in check, allowing only 19 yards on 17 carries. Kaden Meredith and Markevion Haynes led a Lobo rushing attack that gained around 300 yards on the

ground.

But it was nine penalties, two turnovers, and multiple stalled drives that kept victory at arm’s length for Longview.

Highland Park, which led 9-3 at the half, took a two-score lead with 8:14 remaining in the third quarter following a 36-yard field goal by Jack Stone.

Kaden Meredith broke off tackle 57 yards for a touchdown on 4th and three on the ensuing series to cut the deficit to 12-10. Longview followed with another scoring drive and went ahead 13-12 with 7:05 remaining in regulation when Antonio Onofre kicked a 44-yard field goal.

“Credit to Highland Park for playing hard and doing what it took to take the win,” said Coach John King. “We’ve got to learn from this game and make some improvements on both sides of the ball.

There’s still a lot of football still to be played, so we’ve got to continue to work on getting better each week.”

Longview now sets their on the “Bearcats” of Sherman High, where the Lobos will travel this Friday night.

The Bearcats are averaging 28 points per game, and come into the contest with big wins over Saginaw (62-0) and Wylie-East (45-7).

Lady Lobo volleyball gets the win The Lady Lobo volleyball teams competed against Texas High on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

All three teams fought hard, with both varsity and freshmen winning!

Lobo varsity cross country runs to regionals Congratulations to our boys and girls cross country teams!

The Lobo varsity teams competed on Monday, Oct. 26, at the 5A district meet. Izzi Breaux got first place overall for girls, and David Laguna got ninth overall for boys. Both will advance to regionals! The varsity boys got second place team overall and will also advance to regionals!

LHS tennis team loses area playoffs after great season Congratulations to the Lobo tennis team on a tremendous season. The 20th ranked Lobos lost in the area playoffs 8-10 to Ennis. Lobo Tennis had great senior leadership this year from Kelsey Quiett, Delia Acuna, Elliot Murphy, Gabe Montoya, and Harrison Lin.

Students celebrate Día de los Muertos On Thursday, Oct. 29, the students in Ware’s Ms. McClure’s class took part in their festivities of Day of the Dead.

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration of life and death. Each student was excited to share their heritage.

FOUNDATION ‘Great Reward for Great Ideas’ offered by Foundation

By Kay Ray In 1994, a cross-section of community members who support the Longview Independent School District created the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. to enrich and maximize the quality of classroom education in the Longview Independent School District. The Foundation’s Board of Directors, businesses, corporations, community members and LISD employees who support the Foundation believe that creative and innovative approaches to teaching can benefit our students and increase student achievement. Because of this belief, the Foundation has created a permanent endowment fund to provide annual funding for the Great Rewards for Great Ideas Grant Program.

The 2021 Great Rewards for Great Ideas Grant Program,

specifically designed for classroom teachers, counselors, librarians, and campus nurses across Longview, will fund creative teaching approaches and innovative projects with the hope that the best ones will serve as pilot projects for broader implementation. Funding not otherwise available for such projects will be funded from $100 up to $2,500.

The Longview ISD Foundation has now announced the 26th annual Great Rewards for Great Ideas and is accepting applications through Tuesday, Dec. 1. Grant recipients will be announced in March 2021.

Campus Initiative grant announced

By Kay Ray The Board of Directors of the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. proudly announces the fourteenth annual Campus Initiative Grant Program. Working with campus educators, LISD principals can apply for funding up to $5,000 for initiatives unique to the individual campuses.

These initiatives must complement and align with Campus Improvement Plans and the LISD District Improvement Plan.

The Longview ISD Foundation is proud to offer this grant initiative that will provide additional funding to maximize educational opportunity in Longview ISD for all students.

The Foundation believes that this grant program, targeting overall campus improvement, complements the Foun-

dation’s annual Great Rewards for Great Ideas Program, now in its twenty-sixth year.

To date, the Longview ISD Foundation has funded forty-six Campus Initiative Grants for a total of $136,673.08.

Campus Initiative Grant applications are due to Kay Ray, executive director, by Tuesday, Dec. 1.

The Foundation will announce the Campus Initiative Grant recipients in March 2021.

The Foundation looks forward to receiving many grant

Since May 1996, the Foundation has funded 716 grants through the Great Rewards for Great Ideas Program, returning $780,885.75 to Longview ISD classrooms, enabling innovative teachers, counselors, librarians, and nurses to create new educational programs or to enhance existing ones so that they can provide the best instruction possible to all students. These grants have funded programs and projects for students of all ability levels and in a variety of disciplines. In addition to strengthening academics, the grants have also funded projects in music, art, technology, character education, health and physical education, guidance and counseling, and STEAM education.

KC Esports to raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network The Kilgore College Esports team joined collegiate video-gamers on Saturday, Nov. 7, across the nation to help raise money for local Children’s Miracle Network hospitals.

Live streaming of the games, with colleges and universities participating from across the nation, began at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, and lasted most of the day.

Viewers are encouraged to watch the recordings of the matches at www.twitch.tv/ kilgorerangers.

Gifts received by the KC Esports team will directly benefit children locally in the Trinity Mother Francis Christus Health System.

“Our gamers will entertain viewers with fun party games to engage with the audience,” said Andy Taylor, Esports coach at KC. “There will also be

some incentive gifts available including stickers and gaming collectibles. This is an excellent opportunity for our students to be involved in volunteering and

community service – and more importantly, to raise money for such a worthy cause.”

The stream will also feature a “Collegiate Star League Valo-

rant” match against Texas Tech University.

OBITUARIES Longview ISD offers our most sincere condolences to our extended Lobo family Rhonda Richards A celebration of life service for Rhonda Richards was held on Friday, Nov. 6, in the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. Visitation was Thursday, Nov. 5.

Rhonda was born in Lewellen, Nebraska, on May 30, 1950, to Tom and Martha ArmRICHARDS strong. Rhonda was the second of three daughters. Spending her formative years, Rhonda lived on a farm with her family outside of Big Springs, Nebraska. Rhonda attended grade school with her sister and cousins in a one-room schoolhouse.

During this time, she developed her love for animals, and her gift of compassion took root.

Rhonda moved to Longview with her family in 1955, where she attended and graduated from Longview High School in 1968. While attending LHS, she was active in the Gregg County 4-H right beside her dad. She was also a member of the Future Nurses of America.

Rhonda attended Kilgore College and Texarkana College, earning her nursing license, which led to a 40-year career in the medical field starting at Good Shepherd Medical Center. One of Rhonda’s proudest moments was being among the first ten nurses who opened Longview Regional Medical Center. She also served the LISD

John Elmo Boyd John E. Boyd, 85, of Gilmer, Texas passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Thursday, Oct. 22, after a long-term illness.

Mr. Boyd was born September 28, 1935, in Hallsville, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence (Red) and Valerie Boyd; a brother, BOYD Corbuck (Buck) Boyd; and three sisters, Edna Miller, Jean Carlisle, and Judy Rogers. He is survived by a sister, Ruby Smitherman and husband Claude of Longview, Texas; three sons, Hunter Boyd and his wife Kim of Longview, Toby Boyd of Gilmer, and Galyn Boyd and his wife Carlene of Gilmer; five grandchildren, Shea Young and husband Jimmy of Conway, AR, Crystal Boyd of Hallsville, Trent Boyd and wife Amanda of Gladewater, TX, Shana Trussell and husband Jamie of Collierville,

community as the campus nurse for Hudson Pep, South Ward, and Longview High School, from which she retired. During her time at Kilgore College, Rhonda’s younger sister Linda DeArmon introduced her to the love of her life David Richards. Rhonda and David enjoyed many adventures during their 49 years of marriage. Rhonda was blessed with two children Rebekah Reneé Richards and Paul Louis Richards. Rhonda is known as one of the best cooks in Longview.

She blessed her community for many years by baking bread, cakes, cookies, homemade candy, and creating four cookbooks. Rhonda and David joined Mobberly Baptist Church in 1982, where she lived out and demonstrated her lifelong faith in Jesus Christ through serving as a greeter in VBS and the children’s department.

Rhonda is preceded in death by her parents Tom and Martha Armstrong, sister Patricia Karrh, daughter Rebekah Renee Richards, brother-in-law David Towery, and nephew Daniel Towery. Those who cherish her memory and awaiting her reunion in heaven are her husband David Richards, son Paul Richards and wife Rachel. Her three grandchildren Justin, Abigail, and Bailey. Her sister Linda DeArmon and husband Larry, sister-in-law Lana Camp and husband Ricky, brothers-in-law Larry Karrh, and Glynn Richards and wife Sondra, five nieces, two nephews, along with many great-nieces, great-nephews, and a host of friends.

Mr. Boyd served 31 years with the Longview Police Department beginning on December 3, 1966 and retiring as a sergeant on December 31, 1997. Mr. Boyd made an impact on many young lives working security at Longview and Pine Tree High Schools for years. He also spent many summers coaching his sons in Dixie League Baseball and led several teams to the Longview City Championships. Mr. Boyd “Pops” loved singing funny tunes and playing the harmonica to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He loved working outside, growing roses, and enjoying afternoons swinging with his beloved dogs.

The family expresses their appreciation to his dedicated caregivers, Angela Yahweh, Linda Melton, Gladys Barker, and Betty Nelson for their love and support.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Welch Funeral Home in Longview. Burial followed at Grace Hill Cemetery.

Erma Dean Richardson Erma Dean Eddings Richardson was born to the late Will Eddings and Bertha Hall Eddings on May 3, 1926 in Deberry, Texas. She RICHARDSON was educated in Deberry and moved to Longview as a young woman.

Mrs. Erma worked for Dr. and Mrs. Henry McGrede for a number of years. She also worked for Longview ISD as a cook and as a custodian for a number of years.

Mrs. Erma became a member of East Cotton Street Church of Christ as a young adult. A faithful member until she became too sick to attend.

Mrs. Erma passed away at Christus Good Shepherd Medical Center on October 5, 2020 at 12:57 p.m.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving and caring husband Mr. R. D. Richardson, grandson Michael Brooks, great-grandson Dominic Brooks, family friends D. C. Caldwell and Ocie Skinner, son-in-law Claude Beard; 3 brothers, 6 sisters, a sibling that died at birth, and one special brother-in-law Robert Bouchum.

Loving memories will be cherished by her children, Diane Beard, Donald (Terie) Richardson, Juanita Richardson, Timothy Richardson and Carolyn (Larry) Jackson ; one sister, Mendy Richardson; 9 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; a number of nieces, nephews, cousins that truly loved her; her church family, great friends and special friends, Ann McGrede Ashcroft and Callie Ingram.
