Every time I am cooking based off a recipe, I will end up rechecking it at least 10 times in the span of 30 minutes, even though I have used the recipe numerous times before.

Another aspect that ADHD gives us trouble with is emotional dysregulation. This can cause us to have overblown reactions to small setbacks or off-handed remarks. People with ADHD can often feel emotions more intensely than people without the condition.

I know that I have not gone into any of these aspects of ADHD all that deeply, but I am afraid that there is just so much to cover. I hope this has at least helped to some degree.

If you would like to learn more about ADHD, please check the helpful resource books at the public library. Try to read books that were printed within the last 5 years, if you can. For an online resource, go to the Youtube channel “How to ADHD” for a large collection of ADHD helpful videos for adults, parents and children or go to CHADD.org to find support.

The real reason why students don’t ask for help

Here’s something I wrote recently about the topic for Character Lab as a Tip of the Week: The quietest part of my day used to be my office hours, when students could meet with me without an appointment.

Why? Because no one would show up for them.

Judson reading club aims to excite

The program includes a library of new, interesting books designed to get students excited about reading.

The donated $20,000 library is so effective most of the club has dramatically increased their reading levels which had been affected at least partially by the COVID-19 pandemic.

LISD uses unique approach to reach Hispanic parents

By Marangeli Lopez CBS19 When you look at the demographics for the City of Longview, you won’t be surprised at its diversity.

While the primary population is still white non-hispanics at 54 percent, the Hispanic population makes up about 20 percent of the residents.

Meanwhile, the largest school district in town, Longview ISD, is home to 40% Hispanic students, that’s more than any other race in the district.

It wasn’t until the last couple of years, however, that the district really started expanding its communication to parents.

“We felt that there was a huge need in providing them with information that they needed to hear,” communication coordinator Francisco Rojas said.

Rojas and the rest of the communication team have spearheaded a Spanish language radio show that is helping Spanish-speaking parents get the information they need to stay up to date on their students’ lives.

“For example, when when the school board makes decisions on something we have that information in English but we thought it was important for

our Spanish-speaking parents to be aware of what the board was deciding on as well,” he said.

Rojas also hosts a live broadcast during the varsity soccer games. It’s helped the team get a name in the Hispanic community.

“We got a lot of feedback when we go into the community, like at Walmart together as a team or any store, people would point us out and say congrats like you did good,” former Lobo soccer player Alejandro Rojas said.

Alejandro is just entering his first year at LeTourneau University, where he was selected to play for the soccer team.

Savannah Rodriguez, a parent, and employee at LISD says her oldest daughter has gotten several universities offers right now.

“When I was going to school, the soccer wasn’t really that big,” she said. “But the MLS (Major League Soccer) is getting really big and you see a lot of kids signing up to play the sport.”

Her daughter is hoping to pursue a professional soccer career. She credits the offers to exposure her daughter gets from these live broadcasts.

During the week, Francisco Rojas hosts a radio show for Hispanic parents at noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Those can be heard on FM 92.7 and on the Longview ISD Facebook Page.

“Through the radio show, we provide family support topics or parenting topics. We provide information on what is going on in the school district,” he said.

He said many of the students who are growing up in this generation still have parents who do not speak English and who may not have gone to college, so the district is giving those parents resources and information to help those students succeed.

“It’s been a blessing, not only for us as a school district, but for them as well,” he said.

Forest Park sings their skills at SFA camp Thirty-one members of the Forest Park Choir program attended SFA Choir Camp on Saturday, Sept. 18, at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.

Students studied and rehearsed region choir music with students from other East Texas area middle schools.

FPMS had the largest group in attendance at the event.

After a day of rehearsals,

students attending the camp joined a group of SFA Department of Music faculty and students in a concert at Cole Concert Hall on the campus.

Lobo Ag students help out at district garden Mr. Sessions had some of his Ag classes helping out in the garden today! Our garden services all of our campuses with fresh “farm to table” options. The students were impressed that they were actually picking their own food!

Foster students put their best foot forward In a recent IB project showcasing the trait caring, Mrs. Swallow’s PLTW 6th graders created braces or a Foot Orthosis, for children with cerebral palsy. They had to take their ideas through the design process to create a product.

In intermediate PLTW, students were tasked with creating Balloon Racers, that focused on employing all three of Newton’s Laws, traveling 5 meters. They also had to use the Design Process to take their ideas to make a product.

Lobo FFA Junior Team competes for the first time We had students competing at the State Fair of Texas Livestock Judging. This was the first time out for all of them and they did an amazing job! The Junior Team placed 45th!

These students got to hear from Ronda Peterson from Walters Livestock, who taught them about livestock judging and the Brahman Cattle Show Industry.

Longview FFA Members Angela Moyer, Davion Aguilar, and Aileen Dominguez competed in the State Fair of Texas Youth Range & Pasture Plant ID Contest this past Saturday. They won 5th place team, bringing home a banner for their chapter.

Cosmetology class hosts annual Fall ‘up do’ contest The LHS Cosmetology class hosted its annual Fall ‘up do’ contest. These young ladies went above and beyond to create fun hair styles that could be worn at many types of events.

OBITUARIES Longview ISD offers our most sincere condolences to our extended Lobo family Katherine Giles Crum Katherine Giles Crum passed away Friday, October 1, 2021 in Longview, Texas, two months shy of her 101th birthday. She was born December 16, 1920 in Emory, Texas to Alfred Omega “Mig” and Olma Pound Giles.

Her parents owned a Meat Market, a Grocery Store and Café in downtown Emory. Katherine CRUM attended Rains High School in Emory graduating in 1937. She was very active in sports programs in high school including Basketball, Softball and Track.

After graduation she attended secretarial school in Tyler and moved to Ft. Worth to take a job as a secretary. Katherine met her future husband, Shelton H Crum on a blind date while he was on leave as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army. They were married on January 9, 1944.

Shortly after the marriage, Shelton was deployed to the European Theater and was a participant in the WW II D-Day invasion of Normandy France landing on Utah beach on June 7, 1944. They settled in Ft. Worth following his discharge from the Army.

In 1947, they moved to Longview where Shelton worked at LeTourneau for 36 years. Katherine worked as a secretary for the Longview School District for 18 years while raising her son, Michael and daughter, Eileen. Katherine was a fantastic cook and shared many recipes with neighbors,

Peter Jay Myers On Feb.2, 1961, Peter Jay Myers was placed into the arms of his loving mother and sweet father, after a long- awaited arrival – and great anticipation from 5 older siblings. He was their little “ground hog” and whether he saw his shadow that day or not, it didn’t really matter. His warm personality made CRUM any cold weather disappear.

Born in Longview, Jay attended Longview High School and was a proud LOBO. He played various sports, but excelled in football and softball.

As he grew into adulthood, Jay was always a Proud Texan. Being a Texan, is a part of your heart and soul, he would say, and Jay let EVERYBODY know it, no matter where he went.

The Dallas Cowboys were HIS team, the Mason Dixon line was serious business, and he made sure that everyone new that Texas girls didn’t sweat under that hot summer sun, they glisten.

With every word and sentence, he proved that it was good to be “loud and proud” of your roots. He lived in various states, Colorado, Utah, Idaho and Oklahoma, but never forgot about Texas.

Jay served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Colorado for 19 months. He always said it was a challenging experience, but one of the most memorable times in his life. He made lasting friends and memories. It is here, where he met Cheri Sprickerhoff.

They married soon after he returned home, and started a family, welcoming Brianne into the fold, followed by Bradley, 5 years later.

During their almost 69 years of marriage, Katherine and Shelton shared a passion for crafts including stained glass creations and building and painting decorative birdhouses. She loved to read, watch the Dallas Cowboys and daily work one or two crossword puzzles.

Katherine is survived by son, Michael Giles Crum and wife Linda of Goldthwaite, Texas and granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Miles McNeal and husband Kyle and great-grandson, Kayden McNeal of Kilgore. Nieces and Nephews: Marilyn Blanton McPhillips of Fredericksburg, Texas; Sharron Blanton Kifer of Richardson, Texas; Lloyd Ernest Giles, Jr. of Emory, Texas; Bobby Alfred Giles of Canton, Texas; Katherine Crum Richardson of Atta Loma, Calif.; Lila Crum Enriquez of San Bernadino, Calif. And many more nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Shelton and daughter Eileen and her sisters and brothers, Lillie Mae Giles McCravey, Lloyd Ernest Giles Sr, Velma Louise Giles Mitchell, Doris Pauline Giles Blanton, J W Giles.

There will be a time for visitation from 10am – 11am prior to the service which will start at 11am on Friday, October 8th in the mausoleum at Rosewood Park in Longview. Arrangements are under the care of Rader Funeral Home in Longview. The family ask that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society.

After working for the Longview Police Department for 10 years, Jay switched gears and decided to further his education and attended Brigham Young University. He packed his family up and moved, first of all to Rexburg, Idaho where he completed his Associates Degree, and then moved to Provo, Utah and completed his Bachelors Degree in Political Science.

Years later, he met and married Deanna Gardner while living in Oklahoma, and they had two little boys together, Chance and Jayden.

Jay had an infectious smile, a charismatic personality, and had this uncanny ability to talk to anyone. He is survived by his wife, Deanna, and his four children, Crystal Brianne Hurst (Lowell) of Spanish Fork, Utah; Bradley Jay Myers (Melody) of Wasilla, Alaska; Chance Myers of Longview, , and Jayden Myers, of Longview, and grandchildren – Mahayla, Brea, Coy and Ben and siblings - Charlsie Myers Futrelle (Ken) Sedro Wooley, Washington; Becky Myers Murray (Mark) of Longview, ; Matt Myers (Colleen) of Carthage, and Larry Myers of La Conner, Washington.

He was preceeded in death by his Father, Charlie George Myers, Jr., Mother, Mildred Juanita (Peggy) Myers, Sister, Terri Lee Myers Thrasher; and brother, Gregory Scott Myers.

A memorial service for Jay was held on Saturday, Sept. 25, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1700 Blueridge Parkway, Longview, TX. All are invited.

We would like to thank the many doctors and staff at Good Shepherd Hospital, and Longview Regional Hospital for their meticulous and constant care, as well as the many friends who, over the years, kept this little family in their prayers.

May the Lord keep them all in the palm of his hand.

Arlene Koch

Arlene Koch, 90, passed away peacefully at Spicewood Cottages in Clyde, North Carolina, on Saturday, Sept. 25.

Arlene was born in Longview, Texas and was the daughter of the late Arden and Mabel Cole Hughes. In addition to her parents, Arlene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John David Koch, who passed away in 2000.

Arlene dedicated her life to teaching and assisting students serving the Longview community for over 20+ years. She taught at Foster Junior High and Longview High School. She transitioned from the classroom to assisting as a dietician for the WIC program in the late 90’s. This position helped to safeguard the health of low-income pregnant women, infants and children in her Texas community. She was a long-time member of Winterfield United Methodist Church serving in countless leadership positions within the church. Arlene enjoyed singing with the choir and blessed countless families with her participation in the Winterfield Quilting Ministry.

The Winterfield Quilting Group helped to raise almost $80,000 to support missions of the church.

Arlene is survived by her two daughters, Karen Jones, of Longview, Texas and Kelly Kilby and her husband, Joey, of Waynesville, North Carolina; one son, John Arden Koch, of Clinton, Arkansas; five grandchildren, Melody Pokladnik, Martin Jones, III, Toni Ignatowski, Kyle Kilby and Katy White; and three great-grandchildren, McKinley and Kennedy Jones and Joey Ignatowski.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, October 1st, at Winterfield United Methodist Church. A private family burial will take place at Grace Hill Cemetery in Longview prior to the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers donations in Arlene’s honor go to Winterfield United Methodist Church Choir at 2616 Tryon Rd., Longview, Texas 75605.

The care of Mrs. Koch has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville and Rader Funeral Home of Longview and an online memorial register is available at “Obituaries” at www.wellsfuneralhome.com and Raderfh.com.
