hile the current global pandemic might be putting a hamper on this year’s Halloween, that doesn’t mean children can’t still have fun!

To help ensure that our children can still be children this Halloween, here are some fun ideas to help parents out!

hat’s up Lobos?

Long time, no talk.

So, what’s been going on?

COVID-19! In your wildest dreams would you ever have thought you would see what we have seen the last 6-7 months?

Who would have ever imagined our country could be affected so profoundly by a virus? We have been affected enough to shut down businesses, close schools, put a stop to all sporting events, forced us to social distance, wear masks, wash our hands more than we ever have our whole lives, shut in our nursing home and elderly patients, cease elective surgeries at hospitals and even close hospitals to visitors.

Who would have ever thought?

But that is exactly what has happened. And COVID-19 is just one thing that has happened since we last visited.

We have been through tropical storms, a shut-down economy, riots and protests and terrible injustices experienced all across our Country. If all these things had happened over a 5 year period it would be a lot, but to cram it all in over 6 months – Wow! Oh and let’s not forget we have a Presidential Election coming up that will shape the future of our Country.

So the purpose of this column is not to dwell upon all the things that we have had to endure recently, but to focus on how we handle these situations. Because to me how you respond to crises

Just because we do not always agree with one another does not mean that we do not love each other. I haven’t met one person on the planet that I agree with entirely on every topic, but yet I still respect, admire and value having those people in my life.

It is okay to disagree with one another – that is what makes the world go round! But it is not okay to label others or retaliate with hate when we disagree.

Are my actions always perfect and good? ABSOLUTELY NOT. But if I take time to reflect and look backwards then forward, hopefully I will make better decisions in the future. I hope you will too.

Texas Bank and Trust recognizes East Texas seniors Texas Bank and Trust celebrates the forty-third anniversary of the Longview Student Board of Directors, recognizing outstanding high school seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to community service. We are proud to introduce the following members of the 2020-2021 Student Board.

Samuel Walls, son of Dr. George and Carrie Walls, is a senior at Christian Heritage Classical School. He is the captain of the varsity soccer team and a member of the National Honor Society. He is also a participant of the Rotary Youth Leadership Award program and a member of the varsity basketball and tennis teams, as well as a violinist in the orchestra.

Samuel believes he is impacting the world through community service and setting a good example for students in lower grade levels. He plans to attend Georgia Tech University and study aerospace engineering.

Samuel’s future goals include developing technologies that will change the way people live in the future.

Kenneth Bowles, son of Kay and Denny Bowles, is a senior at Spring Hill High School. He is a member of the Fellowship

of Christian Athletes and the varsity football and track and field teams. He is also actively involved with the youth group at Mobberly Baptist Church.

Kenneth believes he is impacting the world “one person at a time” through community

service projects with his school and by sharpening his business skills while selling quality products. He plans to attend Texas Tech University and study business. Kenneth’s future goals include starting his own business.

Elizabeth Monsour, daughter of Sarah and Doug Monsour, is a senior at Longview High School. She is the president of the Viewette spirit committee, historian for the Z-Club, and a member of the National Honor Society. Elizabeth believes she is impacting the world by attempting to brighten the day for others by engaging in conversation and spreading happiness wherever she goes. She plans to attend The University of Texas at Austin and study theater. Elizabeth’s future goals include working as a casting director on Broadway and writing her own musical.

Justin Beltran, son of Becky and Albert Beltran, is a senior at Longview High School. He is an International Baccalaureate student and a member of the National Honor Society. He is also a member of AMBUCS and the football and baseball teams. Justin believes he is impacting the world through community service projects with his church, Newgate Mission, and the Asbury House.

He plans to attend Texas A&M University and study biomedical science. Justin’s future goals include attending medical school and working as a dermatologist.

• LISD schools earned 40 total distinctions on state accountability ratings, an increase from 34 earned last year, and the highest in the region.

LONGVIEW HIGH • Longview High School celebrated a class of over 100 International Baccalaureate Diploma students for 201920.

• The senior IB Diploma students have all completed at least 150 hours of service learning activities, culminating over 6500 hours of community service for 2019-20.

• The IB students participated in the campus service learning project, We Help Two, and were able to sponsor 5 clients with prosthetic legs in developing countries.

• Longview High School began the application process to become an IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) school and to offer the IB Career-Related Programme school.

• Longview High School graduated 51 seniors who will also graduate with Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degrees from Kilgore College for 2019-20.

• Additionally, 80 seniors graduated with at least 24 hours of college credit.

• For the 2019-2020 school year, 594 unduplicated LHS students took a total 7,950 credit hours. This averages slightly more than 12 hours each. These numbers are for hours taken at Kilgore College. Other students took hours through Stephen F. Austin University, University of Texas, and LeTourneau.

Trustees approve COVID-19 tests for students, staff District trustees approved a non-invasive and rapid response COVID-19 test to be offered free of charge to Longview High School students and staff, during a special meeting Monday, Oct. 5th.

The Longview Independent School District Board of Trustees agreed to an agreement with U.S. MedTest Affirmative Solutions Group for free COVID-19 tests to the first 200 LHS students and staffers who sign up.

Place 2 trustee Mrs. Ava Welge cast the lone dissenting vote, as the measure passed 4-1.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Wilcox said the tests would be “100 percent voluntary” and would require parental consent.

“This is going to be firstcome-first-serve for our high school students and staff,” he said. “The test is non-invasive, with some results available in minutes, and all results posted to the district website.”

And free of charge to LISD taxpayers, Dr. Wilcox added.

“U.S. MedTest would be covering the costs and supplying staff to administer the tests,” he said. “So it’s a win-win for our students, staff, and community stakeholders.”

The safety of Longview ISD students and staff is the “absolute top priority” for the administration and board, said Dr. Wilcox.

“We want all our students in LISD classrooms to ensure they have the most effective instruction possible,” he said.

“Our district’s number one goal is to provide the most effective educational environment for our students and staff to be successful.”

Dr. Wilcox said the intention is to help implement a protocol for the State of Texas “to keep our schools open for the entire school year, by ensuring a safe workplace for all our teachers.”

All test results will be confidential to comply with FERPA and HIPAA requirements, and any reports of positive cases would be completely anonymous.

John E. Rosich III, President of U.S. Med Test, said all company protocols and testing “meet the standards of federal reporting to help create action-

able efforts in prevention and containment.”

“We first de-identify every patient to protect privacy rights through HIPPA Complaint dual-encryption and blockchain protection,” he said.

Trustees usually meet in the boardroom of the LISD Educa-

tion Support Center (1301 E. Young Street), but often set special-called meetings at various locations around the district.

The next regular meeting is tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 12th.

Foster students put IB design process to work In Mrs. Melissa Swallow’s PLTW class, two third-year students completed a community service project for the teachers on Foster Middle School.

The students used the IB design process to help over 20 teachers by designing, creating, and refining door stops for those who needed them!

Second graders at JMQ enjoy some time in the garden Johnston McQueen’s 2nd grade students are enjoying the Learn, Grow, Eat, Go program!

They recently planted seeds in four raised bed gardens. The students demonstrated the IB learner profile trait of being an inquirer as they were full of questions for the Learn, Grow, Eat, Go Master Gardeners.

fter a tough opening-week loss to Class 6A powerhouse Temple, the Longview Lobos got back on track last week with a 53-21 rout over the rival Marshall Mavericks.

With the dominating win in their 110th match-up, the Lobos pull even on the season at 1-1 with its 19th victory in their last 20 meetings.

Longview rolled up nearly 500 KING yards of total offense, led by the ground attack of Kaden Meredith and Markevion Haynes. FOUNDATION ‘Great Reward for Great Ideas’ offered by Foundation

By Kay Ray In 1994, a cross-section of community members who support the Longview Independent School District created the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. to enrich and maximize the quality of classroom education in the Longview Independent School District. The Foundation’s Board of Directors, businesses, corporations, community members and LISD employees who support the Foundation believe that creative and innovative approaches to teaching can benefit our students and increase student achievement. Because of this belief, the Foundation has created a permanent endowment fund to provide annual funding for the Great Rewards for Great Ideas Grant Program.

The 2021 Great Rewards for Great Ideas Grant Program,

specifically designed for classroom teachers, counselors, librarians, and campus nurses across Longview, will fund creative teaching approaches and innovative projects with the hope that the best ones will serve as pilot projects for broader implementation. Funding not otherwise available for such projects will be funded from $100 up to $2,500.

The Longview ISD Foundation has now announced the 26th annual Great Rewards for Great Ideas and is accepting applications through Tuesday, Dec. 1. Grant recipients will be announced in March 2021.

Applicants may submit a paper application or submit an online application at LISDfound

ation.org. The Foundation’s grants committee will consider how compatible the applicant’s project/program is with the district’s goals, the school’s or department’s mission or philosophy, campus improvement plan, or district improvement plan when making grant funding decisions. The grants committee’s goal is to fund innovative programs which stimulate thought and student achievement or address needs, challenges, and concerns unique to the applicant’s campus.

Since May 1996, the Foundation has funded 716 grants through the Great Rewards for Great Ideas Program, returning $780,885.75 to Longview ISD classrooms, enabling innovative teachers, counselors, librarians, and nurses to create new educational programs or to enhance existing ones so that they can provide the best instruction possible to all students. These grants have funded programs and projects for students of all ability levels and in a variety of disciplines. In addition to strengthening academics, the grants have also funded projects in music, art, technology, character education, health and physical education, guidance and counseling, and STEAM education.

The Board of Directors of the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. proudly announces the fourteenth annual Campus Initiative Grant Program. Working with campus educators, LISD principals can apply for funding up to $5,000 for initiatives unique to the individual campuses.

These initiatives must complement and align with Campus Improvement Plans and the LISD District Improvement Plan.

The Longview ISD Foundation is proud to offer this grant initiative that will provide additional funding to maximize educational opportunity in Longview ISD for all students.

The Foundation believes that this grant program, targeting overall campus improvement, complements the Foun-

dation’s annual Great Rewards for Great Ideas Program, now in its twenty-sixth year.

To date, the Longview ISD Foundation has funded forty-six Campus Initiative Grants for a total of $136,673.08.

Campus Initiative Grant applications are due to Kay Ray, executive director, by Tuesday, Dec. 1.

The Foundation will announce the Campus Initiative Grant recipients in March 2021.

But according to Coach John King, that win was already in their rear-view mirror as soon as they pulled out of Maverick Stadium.

“It was good to see improvement from Week 1, but we’ve still got a lot of work to do in order to get to where we need to be,” he said.

And where they will be this Friday night is Lobo Stadium in their home opener, facing undefeated Class 6A Tyler-Legacy in non-district action.

The Red Raiders are riding high after big wins over Lufkin and Tyler High, and they’re led by standout halfbacks Jamarion Miller and Bryson Donnell.

“It’s going to be a serious test for our defensive front,” said Coach King. “ Miller and Donnell are running behind a big offensive line, so we’re going to have to play good assignment football, and make sure we finish our tackles.”

Tickets for Friday night’s game, which has a 7 p.m. kickoff, will be on sale to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and from 8 a.m. until noon on Friday at the LHS Athletic Office.
