FFA attended summer training

T

his past June, juniors and senior FFA members were nominated by their agriculture teachers to attend Ag in the Pineywoods Camp.

The students spent a week at Stephen F. Austin State University and Sam Houston State University. Students learned about what each university’s agriculture department has to offer. At Stephen F. Austin students learned about poultry and animal sciences and took a tour of the Walter Todd Research Center and listened to guest speakers in those industries.

Trustees named Regional Board of the Year The Region VII Education Service Center has selected the Longview ISD Board of Trustees as the 2021 Regional School Board of the Year in the large school category.

Longview ISD’s board will serve as the regional representative in this year’s Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) School Board Awards Program.

Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox nominated the board for the award, stating that “Longview ISD is a destination district in our region thanks to the tireless advocacy and exemplary leadership of our Board of Trustees.”

Mrs. Shan Bauer, LISD Board President, said the board was humbled to be selected, adding that “it is an honor and a privilege for us to serve the amazing students, employees, and families of Longview ISD.” The association’s School Board Awards Committee will meet in August to select up to five of the nominated boards to be recognized as Honor Boards, and the overall winner will be announced Sept. 25.

Free school meals improve health

Landry The Conversation Recognizing that millions of U.S. children are at risk of hunger, Maine and California have approved funding to offer free school meals to all students within their state. Meanwhile, a bill proposed in Congress aims to make free school meals a permanent fixture in all states.

The Universal School Meals Program Act would provide free healthy meals and snacks to all children in public and nonprofit private schools regardless of income.

Currently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has allowed school districts to provide meals free of charge to families during the pandemic. Previously set to expire in September, the policy has been extended through the 20212022 school year. This marks the first time in the 75-year history of the National School Lunch Program that all U.S. public school children are getting equal access to school meals, with no questions asked.

Students, teachers need better connections

In the district I lead, we find our shared purpose in our Highline Promise: to know every student by name, strength, and need so they graduate prepared for the future they choose. Despite the dedication and hard work of our staff, however, I knew that too many students still did not feel connected to an adult in their school community. With the pandemic it became more important than ever for us to ensure this connection for every student.

Prior to March 2020, we knew we had a digital divide that prevented too many of our students from accessing their learning from home. After years of debating the pros

Board OKs new school bus tracking system The Longview ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a $37,827 contract with Zonar Systems of Austin for a student tracking application on LISD school buses, during their July 19th regular meeting.

LISD will be utilizing Zonar’s Z Pass application on a variety of platforms to help families keep track of their students once they are on the school bus.

“This allows parents to receive text notifications whenever their child taps the reader getting on or off of the bus,” said Dr. Wayne Guidry, Assistant Superintendent of Finance. “Text GUIDRY notifications will include the time and location of pickup or drop-off.”

Dr. Guidry said LISD families also can log in from a desktop computer or tablet to get notifications. The computer application displays a map of the physical location of the pickup or drop-off. The system will communicate any bus changes, delays, or even engine breakdowns.

“It’s just part of our ongoing effort to improve student safety, district transparency, and give our families peace of mind that their students are arriving to and from school in a timely manner,” he said.

AG BARN RENOVATIONS

Board members also approved taking action on the Energy Savings Performance Contract with Schneider Electric for Phase 1B to design and renovate the LHS Agriculture Barn at a total cost of $1,077,095.

Mr. Dennis Williams, Assistant Superintendent of Administrative & Pupil Services, said improvements WILLIAMS

include upgrades and renovations, as well as extending the roof of the facility.

“With the recent and ongoing growth of our FFA program, our barn is unable to house all of the animals,” he said.

The proposal was procured through the district’s membership with The Interlocal Purchasing System (TIPS), a national purchasing cooperative that offers access to competitively procured purchasing contracts to its membership.

TAX NOTES ‘CALLED’

Board members also approved a resolution calling the District’s Unlimited Maintenance Tax Notes (Series 2020) for redemption prior to maturity.

Dr. Guidry explained that last October the district issued a “Maintenance Tax Note” in order to purchase new school buses.

“The strategy in issuing a tax note was that LISD could earn more money in Certificate of Deposit (CD) interest than we would pay out in interest with the notes,” he said. “Currently we are experiencing historical lows in interest rates, and what has changed is the interest we are receiving in our CDs.” As a result, Dr. Guidry said, the LISD Business believes it is prudent to recall the Series 2020 tax note principal balance of $1,433,000.

“This will relieve future budgets of an estimated $450,000 annually and reduce the amount of interest paid towards these notes,” he said.

Purchase will be covered out of the district’s fund balance, Dr. Guidry said.

CR HONORED

LISD’s Community Relations department earned four National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) awards during the 2021 NSPRA conference in New Orleans.

The district received honors for the Lobo Live radio show, the COVID-19 feeding infographic, and the “I Have A Dream” video. In addition, The Longview Voice received a Merit Award in the Print Newsletter category.

An interesting twist to this honor is the fact that Longview ISD only submitted four entries, which means that everything the Community Relations department submitted for consideration received an award.

Dr. James Hockenberry, Assistant Superintendent of District Services, said he is extremely proud of the communications team “and their commitment to quality and HOCKENBERRY excellence in everything we do.”

“These awards highlight the importance of telling the story of our district in ways that connect with our community,” he said. “As an added bonus, it is really encouraging to receive this kind of honor from one’s peers in public relations and mass communication.”

JMQ FURNITURE PURCHASE

Later, the board approved up to $250,000 of grant funds for miscellaneous classroom

furniture and technology at the Johnston-McQueen Elementary campus.

Johnston-McQueen Elementary is seeking to purchase furniture to renovate classrooms and learning environments on the campus, including the library, classrooms, life skills room, and Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD) classrooms.

Dr. James Coleman, LISD Chief Innovation Officer said, in order to meet the goals and objectives of the charter grants, “there are some furniture and equipment purchases that COLEMAN the campuses wish to provide collaborative and theme-based options for students.”

“Each learning environment will receive updated furniture that offers greater mobility within the learning environment,” he said. “The furniture upgrade also creates a greater opportunity to design learning environments around the CCC (Culture Conscious Campus) model.”

Board policy requires the approval of LISD trustees when making purchases above $25,000.

IN OTHER BUSINESS

During the course of the meeting, the LISD Board of Trustees also: • APPROVED setting a meeting and public hearing for 12 p.m. Aug. 25 to discuss, consider, and possibly approve the proposed 2021-22 budget and tax rate.

• APPROVED a resolution to Seek Requests for Proposals (RFP’s) for expanding digital signage using grant funds. The district Community Relations department is looking to expand digital marquee signs to Longview High, Foster Middle, Bramlette, and Hudson PEP elementary schools.

Lobo FFA officers lead the way On June 24, two of our Longview FFA Officers participated in the Longview FFA District Leadership Camp.

Madison Hunka and Angela Moyer participated in the day-long event where they gained knowledge that they plan on bringing back to improve our Longview FFA Chapter.

The camp is hosted by Area 6 and Longview District Officers.

The officers hold workshops and

discussions with the chapter officers from the region, discussing leadership qualities, mentorship, and ethics.

The FFA’s mission is to provide its members with premier leadership, personal growth, and career success. Opportunities such as this are why Longview FFA students are excelling in post secondary education and being stewards of leadership in our school and community.

Life lessons learned at state FFA convention Longview FFA took seven students to the Texas FFA State Convention in Fort Worth Texas this past week and the convention’s theme was “Elevate”. This theme was put in place so that the students could spend all week thinking of how they can “Elevate” their local chapters, personal futures, and others along their journeys.

The students participated in community service events including a Cotton Jean donation and Trash Clean-Up at a local park. In addition to community service the students participated in general sessions where the students listened to speakers, state officer retiring addresses, and other presentations. Students learned about important skills such as ways they can “Elevate” their future, leadership

qualities they should possess, and how they can spread the importance of agriculture.

Five of our students received their Lonestar Degree Pin during the Lonestar Degree ceremony. These students completed three years of supervised agricultural experiences, at least twenty-five community service hours, and participated in a range of FFA events above the chapter level.

Betty Watkins passed on Sunday, July 11, 2021. She WATKINS was born October 22, 1953, to Walter A. and Mae Ruth Hopper Lee in Smith County, Tyler, Texas. She came to know the LORD at an early age and was baptized at the County Line Baptist Church, Tyler. She attended Emmett Scott High School for three years and graduated from John Tyler High School in 1971. She was a student at Prairie View A&M University for two years and transferred to Texas Women’s University receiving her graduate bachelors degree in Nursing.

She married the love of her life, Rev. John C. Watkins (late pastor of the Parkview Baptist

Floyd Louis Todd Floyd Louis Todd was born on November 7, 1926, to parents Odie and Jimmie Todd.

He was one of four children.

Floyd graduated from Longview High School in 1944.

After high school, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps at the age of 18. He was stationed in Denver and then served in the TODD Philippines.

After his military service, Floyd enrolled in the University of Texas and graduated with a degree in business. Except for his beloved family, UT was his lifelong great love, even though Austin was full of all those liberals!

Floyd married Sue Whitehead Hargrove in 1957 and became a great father to Pam, he instilled in his new daughter a great love of the longhorns.

She served as the First Lady at the church for 39 years and actively participated in Mission Circles and in Christ Heals All Things (CHAT), a bible study group.

Betty was a Registered Nurse (RN) and worked for many years as the school nurse in the Longview Independent School district. She was also a Mary Kay beauty consultant.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Rev John C. Watkins; her parents, Walter A. and Mae Ruth Hopper Lee; and her brother, Clarence Arthur Lee. Rejoicing and sharing her life are her two sons who she loved dearly, John Carson and Curtis Watkins; a host of cousins, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and special friends, along with her adorable “canine, TATA”.

Floyd and Sue moved to Charleston, South Carolina in 1971, where they both worked for the federal government at the Naval Weapons Station. They both returned to Longview after retirement in 1988. Floyd and Sue were members of the First Baptist Church of Longview and loved the Lord.

Floyd was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sue, and his three siblings, O.L., David, and Frances. He is survived by daughter Pam Hobbs of Westminster, Colorado, beloved granddaughter Kasey Hobbs of Westminster, Colorado, and various nieces and nephews and loving in-laws.

Students listened to faculty and staff discuss how to apply for college, how to become a competitive scholarship candidate, and how to apply for financial aid, they also had the opportunity to speak with faculty individually for any advice or interests.

When students got free time they learned how to zip line

and rock wall climb. At Sam Houston University, students learned about the university’s wildlife and rural economics programs, there the students learned how to measure and record antlers and compete in sales pitches and mini engineering feats. The students also learned about the agriculture engineering technology program where they were able to learn how to operate heavy machinery and make pvc

sprinkler systems. The Lobos took a tour of the campus and listened to faculty discuss the Sam Houston application and scholarship process and on their downtime got to spend time in the Kat Klub bowling and playing pool. Longview Lobos enjoyed the experience and learned about college living and expectations. New students will be attending Ag in the Pineywoods Camp next year.

Felipa Cecilia Macias

Felipa Cecilia Macias was born in Longview, Texas to the late Brigido Macias and Natividad Granado. She graduated from Longview High School and then went on to the University of Dallas where she became MACIAS a Registered Nurse.

She began her career as a nurse at St. Paul Hospital of Dallas working alongside her four sisters. She completed her career as a nurse over 30 years later at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview. In her later years she worked at Walmart in Longview.

Felipa’s greatest love were her children, Mark and Lea. She devoted whatever time and energy she had to them.

She enjoyed watching sports, especially football, basketball, and track and field. She had impeccable fashion sense, and she loved listening to music, especially her favorite musician Neil Diamond.

She loved the Catholic church and saying her daily prayers.

You could always find her saying something wise or profound or repeating a phrase of poetry.

She will be greatly missed.

Felipa is survived by her children, Lea Langford and Mark Langford; siblings, Fran Hanson, Mary Macias, Jessie Chitsey, Bridget Koury, Godfrey Macias, and Joe Macias, and many nieces and nephews.

A Rosary will be held on Monday, July 5, 2021, from 6:00 p.m. until 6:30p.m in the Chapel of Welch Funeral Home with a visitation to follow. A Memorial Mass was held in her honor on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Longview, Texas with Father Jose Luis officiating.
