Gee, Djurisic named Teachers of the Year Heather Gee and Desanka Djurisic have been selected as Longview ISD’s 2020 elementary and secondary Teachers of the Year.

Coach Gee teaches at Longview High, while Mrs. Djurisic teaches at J.L. Everhart Elementary. The pair will represent the district for the 2020-21 school year, and in June will be considered for Region VII Teacher of the Year.

Survey: What do teachers want?

They’re also concerned about health and safety if buildings open up again in the fall—and they want districts to make a bigger push to get digital devices in the hands of every student if school buildings stay closed.

That’s according to a new, nationally representative survey from Educators for Excellence, a group that advocates for teacher leadership.

When it comes to instruction next year, teachers were most concerned about students’ academic gaps and social-emotional health. But they also worry that they will be held to unrealistic expectations about how quickly they can get students back on track—45 percent said these expectations were their biggest concern about returning to the classroom, above prospective budget cuts or physical health issues.

To address learning loss, most teachers—60 percent— would prefer to include remediation within the regular school day. Fifty-six percent also supported tutoring and after school programs. Other options, like lengthening the school day or the school year, were less popular.

As a student, it’s time for advanced and applied learning at the highest level while basking in the familiarity of campus and enjoying some status. There’s that conflicting eagerness to finish and move on pushing against a sentimental sorrow to see it all end. And then there’s commencement and all associated celebrations.

So how does it feel to have the senior year erupt under a cloud of circumstances beyond our control? It hurts. It’s easy to feel cheated. To all senior classes, we’re all truly sorry for moments missed and experiences lost.

For me, this feels personal.

I don’t pretend that my story is the same, but it’s certainly familiar. Growing up in Longview, Washington, at the foot of Mt. St. Helens, I saw that docile mountain as a quiet wonderland of family fun. We climbed the mountain and boat-

This is true, of course, for all of us in this hard season.

Among all the skills and experiences that make this emerging generation of adults unique and promising, the COVID Class will be remembered. To all the seniors, we are all truly sorry for things lost and delayed. And we hold high hopes of what can come from these extraordinary days.

LONGVIEW HIGH • Longview High School celebrated a class of over 100 International Baccalaureate Diploma students for 201920.

• The senior IB Diploma students have all completed at least 150 hours of service learning activities, culminating over 6500 hours of community service for 2019-20.

• The IB students participated in the campus service learning project, We Help Two, and were able to sponsor 5 clients with prosthetic legs in developing countries.

• Longview High School began the application process to become an IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) school and to offer the IB Career-Related Programme school.

• Longview High School graduated 51 seniors who will also graduate with Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degrees from Kilgore College for 2019-20.

• Additionally, 80 seniors graduated with at least 24 hours of college credit.

• For the 2019-2020 school year, 594 unduplicated LHS students took a total 7,950 credit hours. This averages slightly more than 12 hours each. These numbers are for hours taken at Kilgore College. Other students took hours through Stephen F. Austin University, University of Texas, and LeTourneau.

Early retirement incentive approved During a special meeting May 26, the Longview ISD Board of Trustees approved incentive pay for early resignation of professional staffers.

The early retirement incentive payment is for professional staff currently under contract, with the deadline to submit their form by June 4.

Full-time professional employee who meet all the requirements will receive a $2,500 incentive included in their final paycheck for 201920; while part-time professional employees who meet all requirements will receive $1,250 in their final paycheck.

Dr. James Hockenberry, Assistant Superintendent of District Services, said the incentive payment “will be subject to all legally required

deductions.”

According to the Texas Education Code, educators employed under a probationary, term, or continuing contract are HOCKENBERRY required to provide notice of resignation without penalty, at any time up until 45 days before the first day of instruction of the following school year.

Dr. Hockenberry said in order to allow additional time to plan staffing for the 2020-2021 school year, LISD is offering this one-time incentive to eligible employees for their early notice of resignation.

The first twenty-five employees who meet the basic requirements are eligible for the incentive. Requirements include professional staff currently under contract, whether currently on a Chapter 21 or Non-Chapter 21 written employment contract.

But this plan is not available for professional staff who have already resigned (or who resign effective immediately) or who do not work until the last duty day of the 2019-2020 school year.

BOARD MEETINGS Trustees also unanimously approved setting board meeting dates for the 2020-21 school year.

Regular board meetings for

2020-21 are tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m. July 13, Aug. 10, Sept. 14, Oct. 12, Nov. 9, Dec. 14, Jan. 11, Feb. 8, March 22, April 12, May 10, and June 14.

Special board meetings for the coming school year are set for July 29, Aug. 26, Oct. 28, Jan. 27, Feb. 24, and April 28.

All dates and locations are subject to change.

Longview fireworks for July 4th back on A generous anonymous donor has agreed to support the best-in-East Texas fireworks portion of the City of Longview’s annual Fireworks and Freedom Celebration after the City announced its cancellation on Thursday, May 28. The event will continue as a drive-in only fireworks show. Additional social distancing and hygiene precautions will be taken to help ensure community health and safety. The festival portion of the event, including the Live Main Stage, vendors, and carnival rides is still canceled.

“This week we made the difficult, but correct decision to cancel the Fireworks and Freedom Celebration. With our City sales tax revenues projected to be down

millions, we could not justify spending a significant amount of taxpayer dollars on entertainment,” Mayor Andy Mack said.

“We are overjoyed that sponsors stepped up and are allowing us to continue with our annual fireworks show. Longview is one of the most patriotic cities I know, and we are delighted to provide this community celebration!”

In addition to the fireworks, several planned activities will continue as virtual events, including an online Fourth of July Talent Stage hosted by Partners in Prevention, an online patriotic animal event hosted by the Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center, and online summer reading club activities hosted by the Longview Public Library.

New city recycling rules put in place The City of Longview Sanitation division and recycling program are dedicated to reducing the amount of waste produced by our community, extending the life of our local landfill, and protecting our environment. To help ensure the continued life and viability of our recycling program, the City has implemented new rules regarding recyclable materials.

Recycling placed in the City’s recycling bins must be limited to #1 and #2 plastics, clean cardboard, paper and clean household metal cans (like soda cans or canned food). Plastics #3 — #7 will no longer be accepted. Other items not allowed in curbside recycling include food, liquids, styrofoam, glass, mylar (such as chip bags or candy wrappers), wood, clothes, and scrap metal. Glass should not be included in curb-side recycling, but the city offers glass recycling drop-off bins at multiple locations.

Due to changes in the international recycling markets, some items that previously could be sold and reused are no longer wanted. When non recyclable items are taken to the materials recovery facility, the recycling process is slowed and the unwanted items are ultimately taken by the recycling company to the landfill. Abbott: Schools can offer in-person school on June 1

By Melissa Taboada American-Statesman AUSTIN — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday gave the go-ahead for in-person summer school, but many district leaders who are weighing options to restart in the fall are expected to hold off.

Texas public schools can launch summer classes as early as June 1, as long as they follow social distancing and health protocols laid out by the Department of State Health Services. The task would require daily temperature checks, keeping students’ desks 6 feet apart and limiting enclosed classrooms to 11, including the teacher.

Abbott’s announcement Monday comes as part of the gover-

nor’s second phase of reopening the state after the coronavirus pandemic led to widespread closures. But ever since schools were shuttered in mid-March, educators have grappled with a

plan for reopening.

Various districts, including Austin and Round Rock, have launched reentry planning task forces to examine different scenarios and find a path forward

for this fall. They have been weighing the continuation of virtual learning, or a hybrid of in-person and online instruction, for next school year. Plans already were being implemented for remote summer school, with registration underway in some districts. Educators in Austin, Round Rock, Leander, Eanes and Hays districts said they don’t plan change course to move to in-person summer learning.

“We have already announced that summer school will be virtual and we have no plans to change that at this time,” Round Rock Superintendent Steve Flores said. “Student and staff health and safety is our priority. We look forward to the day that we can welcome our students into our buildings, but we are not there yet.”

K-12 education models that may gain popularity during COVID-19

By Kerry McDonald Forbes In just a few weeks, U.S. education has dramatically changed. Schools have been closed for the academic year in most states, and some districts have already canceled their foray into virtual school-athome this spring, ending the school year early. With more than 50 million U.S. students at home with their families, engaged in varying degrees of quarantine schooling, questions emerge about how long this will last and what education may look like post-pandemic.

Most families will be eager to resume their previous routines, returning to school and work as soon as it’s allowed, likely with strong social distancing measures in place. But some families may be curious about K-12 education models that favor personalization, small group learning environments, high-quality virtual programming and other innovative alternatives.

While most of us have been forced to work and learn from home for the past two months, separated from our colleagues and community, some employers and employees are finding that working from home has its benefits, including higher productivity gains and lower costs.

A recent Brookings Institution report reveals that we “may see a more permanent shift toward telecommuting” continuing long after the pandemic ends. Similarly, some students are finding that they prefer this pandemic

distance learning experiment over traditional schooling. Additionally, a recent survey by EdChoice finds that more than half of respondents have a more favorable view of homeschooling as a result of the pandemic, suggesting a rising openness to different K-12 learning models.

Here are four K-12 education models that will likely get increased attention over the coming months:

FOREST PRESCHOOLS

Forest preschools and outdoor early childhood programs were already gaining traction prior to the pandemic. The New York Times reported last summer that “nature-based preschools have seen a tidal wave of interest in recent years,” pointing to survey data from a national organization that represents nature preschools and forest kindergartens. These programs prioritize ample outside time, natural play and exploration, typically with small class sizes and enthusiastic educators who enjoy helping

children to learn in and from nature in all kinds of weather.

As conventional schools implement social distancing measures that may include staggered attendance to keep class sizes down and avoid over-crowded school buildings, some families may look to fulltime programs that already focus on small groups and outside learning. Christine Heer, M.Ed. and Lisa Henderson are the co-owners of Sprouts, the first licensed farm and forest kindergarten in Massachusetts. They explain that their program is held almost entirely outdoors and already provides adequate space necessary for safe interactions between children and teachers. Heer expects that programs like Sprouts will become a model for other early childhood programs coping with reopening amidst the pandemic, as well as a magnet for parents exploring other educational options.

Heer explains: “COVID-19 is now forcing communities to look at new ways of offering

safe, healthy options for education at all levels and we are convinced that programs like ours will attract the attention of parents and educators as we reconsider how to bring children back into childcare and preschool settings in a safe, stress-free way.” Henderson adds: “We will be making some slight adjustments when we return to Sprouts, like creating a hands-free hand washing station and keeping lunch boxes in individual backpacks instead of mixing them together in a crate. We believe that nature-immersive programs are the perfect fit to address the stress-free, healthy environments we will need to provide for families.”

MICROSCHOOLS

The push toward smaller, less institutionalized learning environments may also be a boost for the burgeoning microschool movement. Microschools usually operate out of homes or local community organizations and typically have no more than a dozen K-12 students, of varying ages. Often microschools operate as hybrid homeschool programs, where young people are registered as homeschoolers but attend a microschool either full- or parttime, taking classes and engaging with teachers and mentors. Sometimes microschools operate through state charter school programs, such as Arizona-based Prenda, a fast-growing network of in-home microschools that is tuition-free COVID|Continued to page 17

OBITUARIES Longview ISD offers our most sincere condolences to our extended Lobo family JEFFREY ‘JEFF’ DAVIS Jeffrey “Jeff” Davis died unexpectedly in Longview on Wednesday, May 27, at the age of 57.

Jeff is survived by his mother, Patsy Davis of White Oak; wife of 27 years, Mischelle; four sons, Bobby, Joseph, Jeffrey, Jonathan; four daughter-in-laws, three grandchilDAVIS dren; and one sibling, Tracey Davis of White Oak and his family. He is preceded in death by his father, Clayton Davis, and Ida Lou and Aubrey Davis, all of East Mountain, as well as Ruth Green and Hubert Green of Pine Tree.

Jeff was born on March 1, 1963, in Longview, Texas to Clayton and Patsy Davis. He graduated from Longview High School in 1981. After High School, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served from 1983 to 1987. While stationed at Camp H.M. Smith in Honolulu, Hawaii, he served as a Military Police Officer. He married Mischelle in 1992 and the couple raised four boys into strong men. Jeff endeavored to

HILMA JOAN FERGUSON On Friday, May 22, 2020, Hilma Joan Ferguson, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed from this life at her home in Diana, Texas.

She was born on January 27, 1933 in Pritchett, Texas to Inez Stegall Snow and Delbert Foy Snow. She is preceded in death by her parents, FERGUSON step-mother Cleo Snow and brother Charles (Doris) Snow.

At a young age she attended Pritchett Schools and later graduated from Gladewater High School in 1951 where she was a cheerleader. She married her sweetheart, Billy Joe Ferguson, surviving, on May 9, 1952.

Hilma worked various roles as a secretary, a teacher’s aide for Longview ISD, as well as a beauty consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics.

She and her husband also enjoyed their time as managers of the Cherokee Club on Lake Cherokee in Longview, TX. Together with family, they delighted in traveling, camping,

teach his sons a strong work ethic, leadership, and respect for others. His children remember him as a loving father who encouraged them to be strong and compassionate men.

Over his 33 years of work at East Texas Truck Equipment, Jeff, alongside his brother Tracey, worked diligently to continue the legacy that his mother, father, Uncle Hubert and Ruth Green began in 1976. He was a benevolent individual who loved hunting, guns, and fast cars. He was passionate about giving back to his hometown and helping those in need. He was also fervently devoted to his work and family.

A funeral took place on Saturday, May 30, at Rader Funeral Home with a graveside service to follow at Glenwood Cemetery in Gilmer. Due to limited space, the family asked that funeral services be limited to close friends and family.

All were welcome to attend and celebrate Jeff’s life at the graveside service or attend the visitation at the Rader Funeral Home on Friday, May 29. She is lovingly survived by her brother Joe Dell (Patti) Snow and sister Edna (Joe) Thompson. Daughter Debbie (Ronnie) Hill and daughter Cherron (Stuart) Jones. Margaret was born on October 27, 1929 to Dave Samuel Floyd and Margaret Caraway Floyd PETERSON in DeLeon.

Margaret graduated from North Texas State University in 1951. She taught elementary school in Longview and Waco. She met Richard Peterson who was a test pilot at James Connally Air Force Base in Waco. They were married in 1953. They retired in 1970 in Longview.

Margaret never met a stranger.

In her younger years she played golf and shot skeet and trap. She loved to play bridge and belonged to numerous card clubs. She and her sister, Wilma, were “Pink Ladies” at Good Shepherd Hospital for many years. She loved playing bingo at Pinecrest Country Club and on cruise ships.

She was a long time member of The First Baptist Church of Longview.

Margaret was proceeded in death by the love of her life and husband Richard Peterson, parents, sister and brother-in-law Wilma Raye Glover and Davis Glover, brother David Samuel Floyd Jr. Margaret is survived by daughters Stephanie Rhea of Longview, Pamela Clemons and husband “ favorite son-in-law” Steve Clemons of Dallas, Texas. Her grandchildren are Richard Rhea and wife Heather Jackson Rhea of Longview, Christine Clemons of Zurich, Switzerland and Andrew Clemons of New Braunfels. She has one great grandchild, Avery Rhea of Longview. Her surviving nephews are David S. Floyd lll and James J. Floyd of Marshall, Texas. Her nieces are Dr. Deborah L. Floyd of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Nancy Glover Weilheim of North Richland Hills, Texas and Becky Glover Murray of Katy, Texas.

The family would like to give a heart felt thank you to her long time care givers, Millie Rea, Taffy Crawford, Trish Goodman, Silvia and April. You were the “Angels” for Lady.

nal that at least some of them will choose the homeschooling option even when schools reopen. A recent informal survey conducted by Corey DeAngelis of the Reason Foundation found that 15 percent of parents say they will choose homeschooling when schools reopen.

If these parents have warmed up to homeschooling under these difficult social distancing circumstances, just wait until they can actually leave the house, go to the library and museums, gather with friends, take community classes and so on.

Some parents might be turned off by the idea of their children wearing masks and face shields all day, as well as learning in spread out classrooms, and may choose homeschooling, at least until the pandemic ends. With more parents likely to continue teleworking post-pandemic, job flexibility may also allow for more learning flexibility, as parents discover that they don’t have to be the ones teaching their homeschooled children but rather connecting them to both in-person and online tutors, mentors, classes and other resources.

COVID-19 has disrupted much of the way we live and learn, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Forest schools, microschools, online learning programs and homeschooling will likely become increasingly popular in the coming months, as parents search for other education options beyond their local school.

While some private schools are shutting down as a result of the pandemic, unable to cope with the economic shock, this can be a great time for visionary entrepreneurs to create more nimble K-12 learning models that give parents and learners the high-quality, flexible and safe academic environment they want.
