With over $1M in scholarships, hard work paid off for Luke Farr

With over $5,630,396 in scholarships received by 2023 Lobo grads, Longview ISD is proud of these former students. They put in the work and got results. Whether they received local scholarships, academic or sports scholarships, it all comes down to them working for it.

A perfect example of this is Luke Farr. He received more than 11 local scholarships and 32 academic scholarships. In total, he received over $1,048,928 in scholarships. This makes up a large amount of the over 5 million that the entire 2023 class received.

“I am extremely thankful, blessed, and honored to receive the unpredictable amount of scholarships that I have been awarded. I thank God for his provisional handiwork and the generosity of countless organizations and donors,” Luke said. “My time, efforts, and investments throughout my high school career have exceedingly paid off, and I

cannot emphasize enough to current high schoolers the importance to strive for excellence. Once a student achieves this milestone and applies for countless scholarships, the rest will fall into place.”

Luke will be attending Texas Christian University and plans on entering the medical field.

“Luke was absolutely the grand prize winner of local scholarships. He proves that the student who applies for everything, for which he is eligible, can do so well,”

Kristal Linton aims to help

A native of the East Texas area, Mrs. Kristal Linton has been working in education for a total of 17 years, with over 10 of them at Longview ISD.

said Longview High School’s scholarship coordinator, Mrs. Kay Ray. “He has been a joy to work with. I will certainly miss him and his positivity. He will excel at TCU and in medical school, which is his ultimate goal.”

Mrs. Ray is immensely proud of Luke and all of the other students who put in the work and saw the results.

Luke Farr is stunned by the amount that he has received and is thankful to Mrs. Ray for pushing him to apply for scholarships.

She recently went from being an Educational Diagnostician for the district to being the coordinator for the entire Special Education department.

“I am excited about the opportunity to lead the Special Programs Department. We have been expanding these programs for several years and we will continue to build upon that foundation,” she said. “My goal is to provide high-quality educational services to our students, which will allow them to be productive, happy, and successful adults. In order to do that, we must ensure that every student receives the appropriate services, each year of their school career.”

Mrs. Linton believes that the opportunities provided by the district are enormous, with multiple programs that meet the needs of all students.

“Both of my children attend Longview ISD campuses, and I am very proud of the education they have received. We have a talented team of experienced professionals at LISD who have dedicated their careers to helping children,” Mrs. Linton said.

Along with her years of experience, Mrs. Linton also brings a wealth of training that includes receiving a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University, a master’s degree from the University of Texas at Tyler, and principal certification from Stephen F. Austin. Combining both her training and experience, we know she will be able to help our students exceed.

“I am looking forward to working with these staff members to strengthen our services, which will improve the quality of life for the students and families in our community.”

Graduates receive over $5M in scholarships

With many Lobo seniors graduating and readying their bags for travel, LISD would like to say how proud we are of the seniors who not only graduated, but prepared for the future by applying for scholarships to help them further their education!

We know that Longview High School’s very own scholarship coordinator, Kay Ray, is so proud of their hard work! Since so many stuck with it and worked at helping secure their future, the 2023 Lobo graduates received over $5,630,396 in scholarships! This is over $1,100,00 more than last year!

Mrs. Ray, along with every other district employee wishes you the best as your future unfolds before you and you make your mark upon the world.

Board approves upgrades to facilities

The Longview ISD Board of Trustees addressed several important agenda items aimed at enhancing the educational experience and infrastructure within the district, during their regular meeting Monday, May 8, 2023.

District trustees unanimously approved upwards of $110,000 in technology upgrades to the boardroom and district conference rooms.

Mr. Brian Pitts, Director of Technology, explained that technology in the boardroom and conference rooms at the district’s administration building has seen various repairs since it was commissioned in the year 2000, “but much of the audio and video equipment is original to the construction of the building and is in need of a full overhaul.”

“The district uses these rooms for the governing function of the district as well as for staff development and general administrative meetings,” he said. “Improvements in these rooms will allow for better and more effective meetings, train-

ing, and professional development.”

Mr. Pitts said upgrades will include ensuring interactive panels are in all conference rooms, updated projectors and screens, updated microphones and room audio “as well as permanently mounted video cameras for interactive meetings in the main boardroom.”

Dr. Wayne Guidry, Assistant Superintendent for Finance, said the cost is expected to be approximately $110,000

and “will be funded with general funds and grants funds as available.”

UPDATED SIGNAGE AT NED

Trustees also unanimously approved spending $130,212 in grant funds to update the outdoor marquee sign at Ned E. Williams Elementary

Just like the previous digital marquee signs constructed in 2021, these signs are totally grant-funded and will not

require the expenditure of local taxpayer dollars.

Mr. Scott Fisher, Director of Safety & Magnet Grants, said the district is looking to improve the current roadside sign “to be readable, larger and up-to-date.”

“The sign displays red lettering on a black background and is difficult to read,” he said. “The sign is also small so campus staff cannot always get the

SHINING A LIGHT

Teachers honored with Lamplighter Awards by students

Founded in 1994, the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit community organization whose mission is to request, receive, maintain, and use funds to maximize the quality of education available in the Longview Independent School District. Using generous contributions from businesses, community members, Longview ISD employees, parents, alumni, and friends of the district, the Foundation funds the Great Rewards for Great Ideas grant program to advance new, innovative approaches to teaching.

Since 1996, the Great Rewards for Great Ideas Grant Program has funded 770 grants, returning $827,092.75 to LISD’s classrooms and enabling innovative teachers, counselors, librarians, and nurses to create new educational programs or to enhance existing ones so that they can provide the best instruction possible to all students. These grants have funded programs and projects for students of all ability levels in a variety of disciplines. In addition to strengthening academics, the grants have also funded projects in music, art, technology, character education, health and physical education, guidance and counseling, gifted and talented education, career education, and STEM and STEAM education.

The Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. has funded 50 Campus Initiative Grants for a total of $151,265.68 since 2008. The Foundation believes that this grant program, targeting overall campus improvement, complements the Foundation’s annual Great Rewards for Great Ideas Program. The Foundation believes that this grant program, targeting overall campus improvement, complements the Foundation’s annual Great Rewards for Great Ideas Program.

The Foundation has funded fourteen John W. Har rison, Jr. Academic Field Trip Grants for fourth and fifth grade and middle school students for $61,733.74 since fall 2019.Through its three grant programs, the Longview ISD Foundation has returned a grand total of $1,040,092.19 to LISD classrooms and campuses in its twenty-eight-year history. With the Lamplighter Awards, the Longview ISD Foundation pays tribute to students and the educators who are special to them in their school lives and invites the community to cele brate those dedicated, nurturing educators. To celebrate the 21st anniversary of the Lamplighter Awards, the Foundation asked students to remember a special educator who holds a magical place in their hearts and minds because he or she exhibits one of the twenty characteristics past Lamplighter Award student honorees think educators should possess and write essays about those educators.

Those characteristics are:

• Possessing knowledge of the subject he or she teaches

• Displaying kindness or compassion

• Making learning interesting and fun

• Accepting all students

• Believing in students and wanting them to succeed

• Creating a sense of family in the classroom

• Encouraging students, especially when students struggle to learn

• Inspiring students to learn

• Having high expectations for students, demanding the best from students, pushing students to go beyond their comfort zones, or never giving up on students

• Helping students when they experience problems at school or in their personal lives when appropriate

• Spreading happiness to students and making

LAMPLIGHTER ESSAYS

To read the essays in full, check out the June 19 digital exclusive issue

Ilike Mrs. Crane a lot. She lets us tell her about our family, and she tells us we should work hard in class. It is our classroom family.

Fifth Grade, J.L. Everhart

My name is Olivia, and I am a fifthgrade student at J. L. Everhart Elementary School. My homeroom teacher is Mr. Warren. Mr. Warren is my science teacher, and he is an amazing teacher. Since the beginning of the year, have noticed how wonderful he is. He plays the roles of teacher, mentor, big brother, father, and the crazy friend.

Fifth Grade, Bailey

If you want to find a technology teacher, talk to Ms. Burbano. She makes technology fun and exciting. Ms. Burbano deserves the Lamplighter Award because she teaches us how to code and program. Coding is how we communicate with computers. Code tells a computer what actions to take, and writing code is like creating a set of instructions.

Fifth Grade, Bramlette

My special teacher is Mrs. Antommarchi because she helped me learn new things, and she is very kind to all of her students. She helped me with projects and activities that we completed in groups in class. She cares about everyone, and she respects us.

Fifth Grade, Ned E. Williams

Some people think a good teacher will constantly give you work and yell every day, but not this teacher. Mr. Washington can be many different things, but too strict or mean—never! Instead, he inspires his students.

Fifth Grade, Ware

Ms. Mobley, my fourth grade teacher, has been there for me since day one. On the first day of fourth grade, she looked at me and knew that I was shy. Then she came to me and said, “Hello, I am Ms. Mobley.” Then she told me to sit wherever I would like. After that, the first day of fourth grade was not that bad.

Fifth Grade, Hudson PEP

Mrs. Player made me enjoy English/language arts with fun projects and activities. She gave

great examples, was always happy, and was kind to me and very accepting. I was on the brink of filling my car with tears when third grade was over. I missed Mrs. Player. When fourth grade arrived, I was so happy to see her again.

Fifth Grade, JMQ

Of all my teachers, Mrs. Davis has helped me the most. She is a great teacher, and she has many of the traits required for being a great teacher. She explains that we are all worthy, beautiful people who can become more beautiful. She explains that by working hard and learning, we can increase our worth. Because of her belief, I have changed how I see things in life and how I see the world. She has made that difference in me.

Eighth Grade, Forest Park

Coach Jackson is a motivation, inspiration, and a very good role model to me. He helps me become stronger mentally and physically. He teaches me daily to do things right, and he never lets me give up. Even when I do not understand, he explains to me and helps me achieve my goals. He always tells his athletes that we need to try our hardest in everything we do both on and off the field.

Eight Grade, Judson

Have you ever met a teacher who cared about their students as if they were her children? Here at Judson STEAM Academy, Mrs. Stewart treats us all like we are one of hers. I have known Mrs. Stewart ever since I was in elementary school. She has always been known as a really understanding person. She is a good listener who encourages students, especially when students struggle to learn.

Eighth Grade, Foster

John Wooden once said, “A good coach can change a game, but a great coach can change a life.” My

lamplighter, Coach Stephen Wilson, has not just helped coach me, but his inspiration has also affected me in many ways. Coach Wilson is not just any coach. He does not just look at what is in front of him. He also looks to the future of every player to make the player the best he can be. His end goal is not only to win on the field but also to develop men of character and discipline.

Grade, Foster

Who is Mrs. Jhass? While some know her as just Mrs. Jhass, her students know her as the teacher who won their hearts. Mrs. Jhass is a superhero. She not only brings out the best in people, but she also brings out the best in me. I still remember being in her class. How could I forget? Lazy students who never wanted to do their work were suddenly determined to complete their assignments. If that is not a superpower, I do not know what is.

The Lamplighter Award is an award presented to educators who have shown how amazing they are at their jobs, but what about those educators who go above and beyond? Those are the ones who talk to their students, who are determined to see them succeed, and who are not afraid to dig into the students’ personal lives to make sure they succeed. Ms. Williams is one of those educators who are not afraid to step outside their comfort zone.

Throughout my high school career, various people on the Longview High School campus have influenced me. As a student in the International Baccalaureate Programme, I have had the privilege of making strong relationships with my teachers and counselors because of the tight-knit IB community. However, one teacher has significantly impacted my life through her kindness and patience.

Throughout the years I have attended the Longview Independent School District, I have met many people who have influenced me to become the best version of myself in order to succeed in school. To this day, I remember every single one of them; however, one particular teacher is very special to me, surpassing any other person I have encountered. He is Senor Hector Perez. Senor Perez is the reason I have acquired valuable knowledge that will help me graduate.

complete message on the sign.”

“With a full-color sign similar to those at the East Texas Montessori Prep Academy, Hudson PEP Elementary, and Longview High, it would represent LISD in a more professional manner,” added Mr. Fisher.

NEW GAMING LAB AT FOREST PARK

Later, board members unanimously approved allocation of up to $100,000 for the acquisition of equipment, ushering in a new gaming lab at Forest Park Magnet School. These funds will be sourced from the current Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) grant.

Mr. Fisher explained that in order to install a new gaming lab and to expand the gaming design program already in place at Foster and Judson middle school campuses, “the LISD Office of Innovation staff is requesting funds to purchase technology (computers and peripherals) and furnishings (tables and gaming chairs) for Forest Park.”

“The expansion of the gaming lab will create an immersive and innovative learning environment, empowering students to explore their creativity and passion for gaming design,” he said.

CITY STREETS PARTNERSHIP

Trustees also approved selling a small plot of land near Clarence W. Bailey Elementary to the City of Longview for $1,800 as part of their Mobberly Complete Streets Project.

The City of Longview has approved plans to make improvements to a portion of Mobberly Avenue. A portion of the planned proj-

ect referenced above includes adding sidewalks, bike lanes and improving the existing roadway along with a new water line.

Ms. Jennifer Malone, the Right of Way Agent for the City of Longview, confirmed in an email on May 2nd that the City will pay for any costs associated with moving fences on this property.

Dr. Wayne Guidry, Assistant Superintendent for Finance, said not only will the City’s improvement to this property add to the “curb appeal” of that area, “but it will add to the safety of students who walk to this campus.”

SUPT’S REPORT

During the Superintendent’s Report portion of the meeting, Dr. James Wilcox honored departing board members Mrs. Ginia Northcutt and Mrs. Shan Bauer for their service as district trustees.

“(Ginia and Shan) served with passion, ex-

pertise, and humilty, and we are thankful for their time on the board,” he added. “We wish them well in all their future endeavors.”

Dr. Wilcox also honored Longview High School students participating in Skills USA, UIL Academics, One-Act Play, and Lobo Film.

“These students showcased their talent, dedication, and hard work in these respective areas, contributing to the overall success and reputation of not just Longview High School but our entire school district,” he said.

Dr. Wilcox’s report also included the latest Campus Data Monitoring, RAPTOR (Rapid Algorithmic Prototyping Tool for Ordered Reasoning) data from the Office of Innovation, and the monthly Community Relations report. He also received presentations from public school charter partner, the Texas Council for International Studies (TCIS).

2023 LOBO GRADS

Senior Class President Kayden Ardisha Newhouse welcomed the crowd, thanking the love and support from the Lobo family and friends.

“I wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors. I know each and every one of you will be successful,” she said.

LHS Salutatorian Hannah Elisabeth McCrory expressed her excitement about the future and looking toward the exciting things it has in store.

“There is value in constantly striving to see the good both in ourselves and those around us,” she said. “I want to challenge the Class of 2023, including myself, to truly see yourself and those around you. We are all someone’s star and the light they look to in the darkness.”

Class of 2023 Valedictorian Dina Yasser Zeid described this milestone as, “standing on the brink of a new chapter of our lives.”

“We feel relieved and excited for the future, but also nostalgic about the memories. Our time at Longview High School has been filled with ups, downs, and everything in between,” she said. “ No one will take you seriously unless you know what you want and pick it. So, don’t let anyone push you into a box. You’re your own person, and take it from me, we’ve learned so much throughout our high school years.”

“As we progress through life after high school, I wish the best for all of us. We, as a class, have accomplished great things, and I hope that we’re all able to find success in our chosen paths. Thank you to all of our teachers, family, and friends. We wouldn’t be up here without you.”

LHS Principal Mr. James Brewer praised the graduates, saying that they entered high school “under the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, but still battled through adversity and achieved so much success.”

“Although I never say this class or that class is my favorite, I will always remember the Class of 2023 for their resilience in prevailing through the ‘new normal” that seemed to change from one year to the next,” he added.

With some offers still pending, scholarships total more than $5.6 million for over 500 seniors, according to Mrs. Kay Ray, Longview High School’s coordinator of college scholarships and financial aid.
