OPINION
Looking forward to the ‘old normal’ By Matthew Prosser I walked into the Longview ISD administration building on Friday, June 4th without wearing a mask. Not because I’d forgotten to put one on, but because the restriction had been lifted by district leadership. Not going to lie: it felt good. Yeah, it was just a small gesture, but it helped me feel more of a sense of normalcy after over a year of trying to cope with our “new normal.” Of course, I certainly have no issue with anyone who wishes to continue to wear masks or utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) going forward, but it’s going be to nice to know that such decisions will be left up to individual conscience instead of mandate. It made me think about other things I’m looking forward to this summer, and into the next school year. I. Being able to plan ahead. Schools must use Fed funds to reform education By Michael Watson K-12 Dive A large infusion of federal funds is now available to schools across the United States, with a significant amount targeting unfinished learning. President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan allocates more than $120 billion to schools, 10% of which will be set aside for state-level activities, with a requirement that state education agencies focus at least half of these funds to address unfinished learning. Districts will need to spend another 20% of ARP funds to directly address learning loss. During my tenure as a chief academic officer in Delaware, I had the opportunity to work with an infusion of federal dollars as one of the first two states to win the Race to the Top initiative. CONGRATULATIONS SENIORS Class of 2021 takes the next step of their lives On a warm and breezy evening at Lobo Stadium, the Class of 2021 donned cap and gown to celebrate their graduation from Longview High School... and begin the first day of the rest of their lives. Senior Class President Audrey Smith greeted the crowd, sharing a sincere and WALL impassioned exhortation to her peers. “I wish you all the best of luck in all your future endeavors,” she said. “May the years to come be kind to us, and may God, WILLIAMS in His wisdom, bless us with success.” LHS salutatorian Emma Williams took the traditional “graduation selfie” during her speech, and urged her classmates to not play it safe having now graduated from high school, but to seek even greater heights of personal growth and achievement. “Seniors, I challenge you all to look back at this selfie a year from now,” she said. “As you reflect, take pride in how far you have come, and reevaluate your future goals about where you want to be at in life.” Class of 2021 valedictorian Elizabeth Wall recalled fond memories of how far the class had come since their elementary days, and reminded them of the importance of understanding where one comes from to
better understand where one needs to go. “We have shared in each other’s successes and failures, and I am proud to have known you all for the years leading up to
now, because they have helped shape me into the person I am today,” she said. “Everything we did, we did together, and that made all the pain of loss and joy of victory worth it.”

LISD honors 2021 Distinguished Alumni Longview Independent School District honored four former students Friday, May 21 during the annual Distinguished Alumni ceremony and Luncheon at Lobo Coliseum. This year’s Distinguished Alumni are Dr. Blanche Henderson Brick (Class of 1957), Dr. James Andrew “Andy” Mack (Class of 1978), Mr. Wray Wade (Class of 1986), and Mr. Joe Don Holley (Class of 1990). All four said they were deeply thankful for their time at
Longview ISD. Dr. Brick said she was greatly impressed with how the district has evolved since her day, adding that “to be on this campus and to meet some of the students has been a joy,” and reflected on the “golden days” in which she and her peers once walked the halls of LHS. “I know we no longer live in that safe and secure world, we face a different world today,” she Alumni|Continued to page 16

nother year, another group of IB graduates that are heading to their futures after high school. For students, the IB Programme challenges them to excel in their studies, and encourages both personal and academic achievement. Lobos that are graduating from LHS believe that the time and effort they have put into IB will certainly pay off when they enter college.

With her plan to attend Auburn University in the fall to pursue a major in business administration with a pre-med concentration, WALL Elizabeth Wall says that her experience has been a challenge and amazing. “Thanks to the IB Programme, I have more confidence in myself as an individual and a student. I feel as though IB has prepared me for all of my endeavors, whether those be in the classroom or personal. I have learned how to time manage and lead a balanced life between my academics, extracurriculars, and family.” Elizabeth believes that IB is a higher level of learning compared to the standard high school education. “It’s almost like a stepping stone to how you’re going to learn in college. With IB, you have to take certain classes.” Along with the expected classes such as math and history, IB students are required to take extra courses such as Theory of Knowledge and four years of a foreign language rather than the standard two.
HARRISON LIN
At UCLA this fall, Harrison Lin will be attending as a pre-med student with studying an undeclared major for life sciences. Ten LIN years from now, he hopes to be beginning his second year of residency. With an older sibling that also took the IB path in high school, Harrison saw how it benefited them, so he decided to take the same path.
“I am really happy that I went through the program. I know some people don’t stick with it, but I found it to be super rewarding. I felt like not only was the curriculum challenging and rewarding, but the IB teachers really are focused on trying to help you elevate your learning.” Harrison claims that the program has helped with his time management, allowing him to better balance challenging curriculum with extra curriculars and personal life.

Aside from being one of the creators of the club, taking part in IB has led Kiaira to being more aware of the world as a whole and seeing things from the perspective of others. “IB really focuses on the global standpoint of things, and I think as Americans, we really tend to focus on our orthodox way of thinking. But IB really encouraged me to look at other areas of the world. I think that has really changed my mindset. It really helps you work with others.”
AUSTIN PENCHEON
Moving to Midwestern State University this fall, Austin Pencheon has more than just playing on their football team on his PENCHEON mind. When not playing or practicing, he plans to pursue his degree for environmental engineering. While Austin concedes that it has been a challenge to be in the IB Programme and be on the Lobo football team, he believes firmly that it was worth the struggle. “The program has definitely been worth it. It’s very rigorous. Especially balancing it with football, but I believe that the perspective that it opens up makes it very valuable. It’s a program that really helps you to think in ways that you have never thought before and will be valuable in life and in work, especially in college.” Austin says that being an IB IB|Continued to page 14

With a global pandemic hitting at the start of the year, every school district was thrown into disarray. When August arrived, LISD had taken massive steps to ensure the education of every student. Whether students were to learn from home or go to their campus, the district’s teachers and staff went above and beyond the call of duty.

Students from Foster and Judson started the early steps of a career in agriculture. On Monday, Jan. 22, the middle school students were given a tour of the LISD Meat Processing Educational Lab. Longview High School animal sciences teacher Braylon Sessions, who has been with the district for three years, said that some of his students have taken their training from the Ag class and gone on to have a career in the meat processing industry.

Despite COVID-19, LISD had a great start to the school year. “I cannot say enough about what a wonderful job the teachers and leaders at (East Texas Montessori Prep Academy) did for my granddaughter!” said Olivia Carter. “After how things ended last year, we were worried about coming back!” Carter said it was the constant communication from her grandaughter’s teachers and campus leaders, as well as district administration that helped her family feel encouraged about returning to school.

Lobo Nation is heartbroken by the passing of coach Cheryl Bell. Coach Bell was a leader in the community, a pillar in East Texas Athletics, a wonderful teacher to our youngest students, a mother, and a friend to anyone she met. She loved her athletes and her littles at ETMPA. She loved her co-workers and was someone who always went above and beyond for anyone. Words cannot express the impact losing coach Bell has on our Longview community.

An epic team up was initiated between video game company Gearbox Software, Microsoft, Texas Southern University and LISD. The program that brought all of these different organizations together is GBX Creating Computing Curriculum, from Gearbox. The program served to see video game design and production offered to students at Foster, Judson and Longview High School.

The LHS film team, LoboView Films, made a blockbuster! Their latest film, “Shadow Walkers”, earned them second place in State! “I think it’s fair to say the LoboView Films students are beyond thrilled with the results,” said the Lobo UIL film coach Joshua Graves. “Back-to-back State finals is an excellent accomplishment in itself, but to also know that our film program is now number 2 in the state really gives the kids a goal to work towards next year.”

While COVID-19 altered the way that the annual Hudson PEP Fun Run worked, it was still a resounding success. The students and parents still had a blast and the PTO fundraiser received over $58,000. What an amazing job!

A faithful advocate for LISD’s students and staff, Sam Satterwhite passed away at age 68. He was a 1970 LHS graduate who brought so much to the district. “Sam was a tireless champion for the students, staff, and families of Longview ISD, as well as the greater East Texas community,” said Dr. James Wilcox, Longview ISD Superintendent. “Not only that, he was a friend to all. Sam Satterwhite would give a complete stranger the shirt
off his back, then walk the extra mile to help that stranger buy a new shirt. I’m going to miss his friendship.”

Teachers honored with Lamplighter Awards by students
T
he 2021 Lamplighter Awards have been presented to their recipients! Congratulations to every teacher who has been chosen by their grateful students. Founded in 1994, the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit community organization whose mission is to request, receive, maintain and use funds to maximize the quality of education available in the Longview Independent School District. Using generous contributions from businesses, community members, Longview ISD employees, parents, alumni, and friends of the district, the Foundation funds the Great Rewards for Great Ideas grant program to advance new, innovative approaches to teaching. Since 1996, the Foundation has funded 728 grants through Great Rewards for Great Ideas, returning $795,468.74 to Longview ISD teachers, counselors, librarians, and nurses so that they can provide the very best education possible for their students. The Longview ISD Foundation has also funded forty-seven Campus Initiative Grants for a total of $138,872.58 to enhance programs that align with campus and district improvement plans to increase student achievement. Since fall 2019, the Foundation has funded five John W. Harrison, Jr. Academic Field Trip Grants worth $25,991.13 for fourth and fifth grade and middle school students. While enhancing educational opportunity for all students, the Foundation has returned $960,332.45 to LISD classrooms and campuses. With the Lamplighter Awards, the Longview ISD Foundation pays tribute to students and the educators who are special to them in their school lives and invites the community to celebrate those dedicated, nurturing educators. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Lamplighter Awards, the Foundation asked students to remember a special educator who holds a magical place in their hearts and minds because he or she exhibits one of the twenty characteristics past Lamplighter Award student honorees think educators should possess and write essays about those educators. Those characteristics are: • Possessing knowledge of the subject he or she teaches • Displaying kindness or compassion • Making learning interesting and fun • Accepting all students • Believing in students and wanting them to succeed • Creating a sense of family in the classroom • Encouraging students, especially when students struggle to learn • Inspiring students to learn • Having high expectations for students, demanding the best from students, pushing students to go beyond their comfort zones, or never giving up on students • Helping students when they experience problems at school or in their personal lives when appropriate • Spreading happiness to students and making students feel good about themselves and others • Going beyond the classroom to educate students, perhaps in UIL events or other school competitions • Displaying patience and giving one-on-one attention • Teaching students how to study or be organized • Treating students with respect • Being a good listener • Serving as a role model • Understanding when students don’t understand and working to make the subject or skill understandable to all students • Helping students find their academic passions and encouraging them to pursue those passions • Expecting good behavior from all students, forgiving of students who have made bad choices, or refusing to accept a student’s bad behavior that Awards|Continued to page 16

East Texas native Laura Johnston brings her love of reading to her students Laura Johnston is an 8th grade ELAR teacher at Judson STEAM Academy. Mrs. Johnston grew up in Kilgore and graduated from Kilgore High School. She earned her undergraduate degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Stephen F. Austin State University and was recently accepted into the UT Tyler Graduate Program where she will be pursuing her Master’s in Educational Leadership.
While this is her first year as a staff member at Judson, she worked as a 5th grade reading teacher in Kilgore ISD for the previous three JOHNSTON years. Mrs. Johnston has a passion for reading, believing it is the foundation for all learning. One
of her favorite quotes is, “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.” She consistently aims to challenge the minds of her students as they grow in their academics. Her favorite part of teaching is the connections and relationships she builds with her students. ALUMNI |Continued from page 3 said. “But I also know that warm happy world is still a part of all we are today, and I can only say ‘thank you’ to those who gave us that world, and those of you who shared that world with me.” Mr. Holley said, growing up in Longview, he never imagined that he would someday work at one of the largest architecture firms in the world, “working with some of the best professionals in the industry on these fantastic and rewarding projects.” “But I’m proud to say that it all started in the schools of Longview and the Longview Independent School District,”
he said. “I am grateful to receive this honor, and I thank you all very much.” Dr. Mack said he was humbled to be selected as a Distinguished Alumni, and so appreciative of the teachers, coaches, friends, and family in Longview ISD that provided him with such an amazing support group to grow in during his younger years. “There is a common thread there, and it’s the amazing staffers of Longview ISD,” he said. “You all are the ones who should be honored, you all are the ones who make it work. You are the ‘big green machine,’ Go Lobos!”
Wade praised the power of community in Longview who has always been there for him at every step of the way. “I am surrounded by a lot of people who love me and care for me,” he said. “While this is a prestigious honor recognizing contributions I might have made, I must recognize the people in my life who have made anything and everything I have done possible.” Honorees are nominated atlarge and chosen by a committee of previous honorees, volunteer Distinguished Alumni Committee members, and the district’s
Community Relations office. Distinguished alumni typically have excelled professionally, in addition to serving the communities in which they live. Dr. James Wilcox said the accomplishments of the alumni are both a source of pride as well as a challenge to future Lobos. “Looking at what former LISD students have done in the world should show our students that anything is possible for them,” he said. “They too can continue to excel once they leave the halls of Longview High School, and join their fellow alumni in making the world a better place.”
