Trustees approve district calendar While federal, state, and local authorities continue to adjust protocols and plans to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Longview ISD’s schedule for the next school is set... for now.

The Longview ISD Board of Trustees approved the 202021 District Calendar during their Feb. 8th regular meeting.

Classes will begin Aug. 16, 2021, and HOCKENBERRY end May 25, 2022.

Commencement ceremonies are tentatively set for May 20, 2022.

Dr. James Hockenberry, Assistant Superintendent of District Services said that, although this calendar is now in place, “obviously anything could change between now and August.”

Focus on instruction, not testing

By Scott Marion Education Next Teachers and parents have struggled to keep chil-dren on course over the past year, but the extended school closures have clearly taken their toll on learning.

In light of these extraordinary circumstances, we have four recommendations for the U.S. Department of Education regarding state testing: 1) Provide states with as much flexibility as lawfully permissible to reduce or eliminate school-accountability determinations in the current school year; 2) do not require states to administer tests remotely, because these approaches threaten the valid interpretation of testing data; 3) do not require states to administer any statewide tests unless almost all students have been learning in school for at least a month prior to testing; 4) even if states are able to administer tests in something close to a typical

manner, we urge federal flexibility in requiring testing because of likely unintended negative consequences and because desired information on student learning needs can be gathered in other, less costly and intrusive ways. Here we present the reasoning behind our recommendations.

As Jessica Baghian notes in her companion essay, though, most pro-testing advocates understand that it makes no sense to hold schools accountable for outcomes beyond the schools’ control. Student performance in the spring will hinge as much upon digital access and home learning environments as it will on the efforts

Many advocacy groups and policy leaders are urging that statewide testing take place this spring because “the data are critically needed.”

There are competing ideas, however, about how the data will be used and whether these uses are technically defensible. There are also conflicting ideas about how tests should be administered, given that the Covid-19 crisis is likely to persist through the spring. These dilemmas come down to three main questions: Can statewide testing produce results that are trustworthy and useful this year? Even if states are able to administer tests to

essentially all students, is testing the best use of resources to gauge learning progress during the pandemic? What should state leaders do to understand how best to address the major learning challenges and inequities exacerbated by the pandemic?

If state tests are to serve public-reporting or accountability purposes, they must be administered under standardized conditions that will allow officials to make valid inferences from the results. It is unlikely that all students will have returned to in-person schooling by the time of the usual testing windows in March through May. Therefore, states are left with two unsatisfying options: they can either require students to come into school buildings to take the tests on a schedule that supports social distancing, or they can administer the assessments remotely.

Most adults and educators understand that the process of learning matters more enduringly than the product it produces. Psychologists Carol Dweck and Angela Duckworth have popularized this idea; it’s become so deeply ingrained in teacher-training programs that lessons on growth mindsets and grit appear in elementary school curricula. Theoretical lessons about the value of the process can’t work, though, if the facts of assessment undermine them: Though the process of learning requires a student to change her mind, our classrooms still mostly assess a student based on her ability to demonstrate a single concrete view.

Templates for thinking about one’s own thinking already exist: structured “process-writing” assignments and problem sets and lab reports that ask students to submit, alongside final drafts, logic maps and thinking narratives that flag moments of idea development.

Hudson PEP students raise money to buy water well

By Cynthia Miranda KETK A group of Hudson PEP Elementary school students raised money to purchase water wells to provide clean water to a community in Uganda.

The students successfully fundraised $6,200 for the project, and they were recognized for their efforts during a school board meeting on Monday.

The group read a book called “A Long Walk to Water” which inspired them to take action.

The book described how some people in Uganda would travel long distances for water and

they would get sick because they would drink water that wasn’t clean.

The children were able to fundraise by holding a sock and

soap fundraiser and a penny war.

Finally, they were able to reach their goal. A third party will help them build a well in a

rural area near Shammah High School, and the well will provide clean water to the 300 students. It will also provide water to 2,000 community members.

“Through this experience, we learned that even though we are kids we can still make a difference in the world,” said one student.

Construction to start building the well will begin on Feb. 15. A plaque will also be placed on the final product in Uganda that will say “Thank you Hudson PEP Elementary School.”

The students will also receive pictures and videos from the location once the well is built.

Lobo automotive program seeks vehicle donations Longview High School Automotive Technology program is seeking donations for trucks/cars or car parts, 1996 or newer, to enable students to have handson experience in repair and rebuilding.

LONGVIEW HIGH • Longview High School celebrated a class of over 100 International Baccalaureate Diploma students for 201920.

• The senior IB Diploma students have all completed at least 150 hours of service learning activities, culminating over 6500 hours of community service for 2019-20.

• The IB students participated in the campus service learning project, We Help Two, and were able to sponsor 5 clients with prosthetic legs in developing countries.

• Longview High School began the application process to become an IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) school and to offer the IB Career-Related Programme school.

• Longview High School graduated 51 seniors who will also graduate with Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degrees from Kilgore College for 2019-20.

• Additionally, 80 seniors graduated with at least 24 hours of college credit.

• For the 2019-2020 school year, 594 unduplicated LHS students took a total 7,950 credit hours. This averages slightly more than 12 hours each. These numbers are for hours taken at Kilgore College. Other students took hours through Stephen F. Austin University, University of Texas, and LeTourneau.

Longview ISD has partnered with Thrive360 in putting donation boxes at 6 campuses within LISD. These bins will be emptied weekly.

Forest Park holds STEM fair for students Forest Park Magnet Middle School held their STEM fair on Tuesday morning, Feb. 9.

Seventy-six students had the opportunity to showcase their projects to the judges. We are so proud of all the students who participated.

Eight projects are advancing to the regional STEM fair that will be held virtually on the campus later this month.

District seeks applicants for $1,000 Voice scholarship Applications for the 2020 Voice Scholarship are now available from the LISD Community Relations Department.

The Longview Voice is a district-wide newspaper that covers student, staff, and local community news. The paper is produced by the LISD Community Relations department in partnership with the Thrifty Nickel, as well as campus staff and volunteers.

Each year the Community Relations de-

partment selects a Longview High School senior student who contributes work to The Longview Voice for a scholarship to the school of their choice.

To qualify a student must submit a news article, op-ed column, or photo to be published in any edition of The Longview Voice newspaper, and fill out an application to be considered.

Judson students turn in amazing science projects Judson held their STEAM Science Fair on Friday, Feb. 4! The students did wonderfully and turned in a lot of amazing projects!

PEPsters get a digital tour of art museum The Longview Museum of Fine Arts allowed third-grade students from Hudson PEP Elementary to do a virtual field trip of the museum and learn more about art. The children from Mrs. Patterson’s class enjoyed every second of it.

Hudson PEP gets into the spirit of the Super Bowl Third graders at Hudson PEP had a Super Bowl celebration Friday, Feb. 5! The students integrated the Super Bowl and sports with Math, Science, Social Studies, etc. and they really had a blast! They even had the opportunity to virtually meet with a high school football coach and do some football drills during P.E. At Hudson, kids have lots of fun as they learn! Thank you Hudson PEP teachers and staff for creating memorable experiences for our students!

Foster agriculture students learn at a dairy farm The future of Ag is in our classrooms today.

Students from the newly formed Agriculture classes at Foster Middle School traveled to Waldo Way Dairy in Mineola on Friday, Jan. 29.

The kids got the opportunity to taste raw milk and yogurt, pet the baby calves, and see first hand where their milk products come from.

Temporary lane closure at Hawkins-Good Shepherd Weather permitting, beginning the week of February 15, Hawkins Parkway, at the intersection of Good Shepherd Way, will be temporarily closed to eastbound, right-lane traffic daily between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Temporary lane closures will continue for at least 6 weeks to allow for the widening of Hawkins Parkway. Drivers are encouraged to use an alternate route.

This project consists of the installation of a new four-way traffic signal and a center turn lane at the intersection of Hawkins Parkway and Good Shepherd Way. This project is being constructed by Reynolds and Kay, LTD of Tyler, Texas. If you have any questions related to construction please call the City’s Project Manager, Zack Shaner, at 903-237-1321.

SPORTS LOBO IN DEMAND NFL all-pro Trent Williams ranked among top free agents

T

he 2021 league year and free agency period begin on March 17 at 4:00 p.m. EST. The next chapter begins for all 32 teams on that day when 2020 player contracts expire and many hit the open market. The Athletic released a ranking of the league’s top 50 2021 free agents and former Oklahoma Sooner, and former Lobo, popped up on the list. Former offensive tackles Trent Williams made the cut.

WHAT THE ATHLETIC SAYS

After missing all of 2019, Williams was traded to the 49ers and played at a high level. He finished fourth among tackles in ESPN’s passblock win rate and made the Pro Bowl. Wil-

liams is on the wrong side of 30, but left tackles of his caliber are hard to find, and he should still have plenty of suitors if he hits the open market. David Bakhtiari ($23 million per year) is currently the NFL’s top-paid tackle. The floor for a Williams deal could be the contract ($17 million per year) Garrett Bolles signed with the Broncos. One important note: As part of Williams’ restructured deal with San Francisco, the 49ers can’t use the franchise tag on him.

Trent Williams was not highly touted coming to Oklahoma coming out of Longview High School. He was projected to be OU’s lowest-rated offensive line prospect in 2006.

Lipp qualifies for state, beats school record We are excited to present last week’s Athlete of the Week award to Lobo swimmer Joshko Lipp. He is the district champion in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Lipp broke the 2002-2003 school record in the guys 100-meter breaststroke in prelims and then came back and broke his own school record in finals and also qualified for state in the process!

Longview has earned their reputations as one of the predominant football factories in East Texas as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach John King held a socially distanced signing ceremony Wednesday as seven Lobos signed their national letters of intent to play college football.

Jahkamian Carr will head to ETBU. Laqualon Hale is off to Midwestern State. Markevion Haynes will head out west to play at Eastern New Mexico. Joe Jones is staying close to home and will play JUCO football at TVCC. Kaden Meredith is headed for the Rocky Mountains to play at the Air Force Academy. Antonio Onofre is off to kick and punt for Navarro College and Austin Pencheon will play tight end at Midwestern State.

The board unanimously approved hiring Spring Hill ISD Superintendent Dr. Wayne Guidry for the position of Assistant SuGUIDRY perintendent of Business, Transportation, & Technology at Longview Independent School District.

Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox cited Dr. Guidry’s reputation as a cutting-edge innovator in educational leadership.

WILCOX “His experience and accomplishments speak for themselves,” he said. “I am confident that Dr. Guidry will prove to be a tremenBAUER dous asset to the district leadership team, in the service of our students, staff, and entire Longview community.”

LISD Board President Mrs. Shan Bauer agreed.

“We’re very excited to see what Dr. Guidry brings to our district,” she added.

Dr. Guidry comes to Longview ISD from Spring Hill ISD where he served as Superintendent from 2019 to 2021.

The Longview News-Journal also praised the hiring in a Sunday editorial, recognizing how Dr. Guidry developed improvements to Spring Hill ISD’s career and technology classes, as well as leading a successful in-home learning transition.

“We look forward — we hope — to seeing all that you will continue to accomplish and the leadership you will continue to bring to our community in the years to come,” the editorial stated.

Dr. Guidry will direct and manage the operation of all financial and business affairs,

technology, and transportation of the district including accounting, purchasing, and data processing.

In addition to this, he will provide managerial direction and coordination under board policy guidelines to several key district functions, and serve as chief financial adviser to the superintendent and board of trustees.

WELCOME, MR. WINK

Former Carthage ISD superintendent Mr. John Wink has been hired as Coordinator of Policy and New Schools for Longview WINK ISD. In his new role, Mr. Wink will support the Office of Innovation and Chief Innovation Officer Dr. Craig Coleman in providing partner and district staff with the training, support, and policy guidance necessary to promote strong compliance and performance by partner schools.

Mr. Wink has been in education for over two decades in various roles, including classroom teacher, assistant principal, and principal. He began his career in public education as a choir teacher for Longview.

Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox said he has been familiar with Mr. Wink’s work and reputation for a number of years, and when the administration saw the opportunity to fill an important role with such a qualified applicant,

“We jumped on it.”

“John Wink brings a variety of skills and abilities that will strengthen our Office of Innovation,” he said. “We’re glad to add someone of his caliber and background to our administrative team.”

During the course of the meeting, the LISD Board of Trustees also: approved Board Policy Update No. 116 concerning: Conduct on School Premises, At-Will Employment, Types of Contracts, and Cybersecurity; approved a donation of $500 from local resident Mr. Ken Beishir for the LHS Spanish Department; approved a Joint Election order with the City of Longview for the LISD Board of Trustees election; received the Charter Partner Monthly Report for February 2021; approved Time Use Tracker for the Jan. 19th Regular Meeting; received the LISD Financial Statement for January 2021; approved Trustee Election Order for Districts 1, 3, and 7; approved Minutes from the Jan. 27th Special Meeting; and approved Budget Amendment No. 7.

Trustees usually meet in the boardroom of the LISD Education Support Center (1301 E. Young Street), but often set special-called meetings at various locations around the district.

The next regular meeting is tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m.
