hat made you want to apply for FLEX? Ever since I was a child, different cultures, foreign languages, and the mysteries of the unknown interested me very much. When I got informed about FLEX, I realized that the program offers just that. The idea of having the opportunity to engage with people who had never heard of Serbia, let alone met someone who lives there made me very excited, but equally nervous. Being a representative of a country that not a lot of people know about meant that my representation of it would be a strong influence on the way people I’ve met perceived Serbia. The thought of that intimidated me, but I’ve managed to shake that feeling

Answers to saving education are simple

Recently, I wrote a piece for the Grit Daily website entitled “Technology is Overwhelming Education and That’s Why We Need More of It.” The premise for the column was that using more, sophisticated technology could take the pressure off teachers and give them more time to teach. In the column, I listed some ideas that could help guide schools and bring them more in line with the rest of the world. Traditional public education is experiencing growing pains as it transitions to more of a student-directed, on demand experience industry.

The transition is inevitable.

Parents are discovering education options like amazing video game-grade courseware, private, magnet and charter schools and many online and strip-mall alternatives that are just so much sexier than traditional public education.

Mostly, parents want some measure of control over how their kids will be educated.

Being a good teacher is hard, so is democracy

My employer, the University of Southern California, requires me to teach a general education course every year. Although I sometimes resent the obligation, most of the time I am grateful for it. I have come to think of my general education classroom as both a symptom of our flawed democracy and an attempt to exercise that democracy — an effort that requires work that we oftentimes do not want to put in.

How many of these leaders can also claim to be teachers, sometimes in the lessons they might offer, but most of all in the examples that they set?

If our leaders should be teachers, our teachers should also be leaders, understanding that what we do in our universities is not simply to research or teach but to model what a democracy should be.

City hosting photo contest for the public The City of Longview is inviting residents to submit photos of Longview for a photo contest now until Nov. 1, 2019. Photo entries will be judged based on creativity, quality, originality, and overall impact.

Submitted photos may be used for the City of Longview website, Visit Longview website, or various other projects.

The show went great, people took lots of pictures, I received lots of compliments, and overall everyone was satisfied. I can’t put into words how happy and proud I am that I managed to accomplish something I wanted for so long. This goes to show that anything you are passionate about and willing to put in work for can be done. Don’t listen to anybody who tells you otherwise.

Do you have any advice for future students?

A piece of advice I would give to future exchange students is to go into this year with the realization that this will be real life for you, not a vacation. A misconception I had in the early stages of my exchange was that I was there just to have a good time.

That partially is true, because you will and should have a good time, but considering that this is a period of almost a year, at a certain point in your exchange you become so used to everything that you start to view this as your life. When everything settles in and you feel comfortable you should start thinking about your goals. For many exchange students, being in the US provides many new opportunities and resources we didn’t have access to in our home countries. To sum everything up, don’t waste your year on just sitting around and relaxing. Go out there and blow everyone away, including yourself, with the new and improved person you have become.

The Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) program is a competitive, merit-based scholarship program funded by the US Department of State. ust before Mesquite traveled to Longview for a game in the late 1980s, someone warned Mike Overton, a Mesquite assistant who’d never coached at the east-Texas stalwart, about the wolf howl.

Every time Longview would get a first down, score or make a big play, the stadium’s speakers would blare with a loud, drawn-out cry of a lobo.

Overton believed it, but until he arrived about 130 miles east of Dallas to the field, he didn’t realize how intimiLobos|Continued to page 13

King, who has committed to Texas A&M, will be competing KING in the 13th annual event on live television on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020. The game is set to take place in Orlando, Flordia, broadcast on ESPN2 at 5 p.m.

With ESPN’s 300 ranking of the nation’s top senior football players, King who is ranked at 18, will be able to show the country what the Lobos can do. He’s set to show why ESPN ranked him as number 1 among dual-threat quarterbacks.

That hasn’t changed in the three decades since Overton’s introduction. Neither has the intensity of and loyalty to Longview football.

Over the next seven weeks, five Dallas-area teams will face defending Class 6A Div. II state champion Longview.

Rockwall, ranked in the top five of SportsDay’s 6A rankings, plays at Longview on Friday. Rockwall-Heath also heads to the Piney Woods on Oct. 18.

There, they’ll face not just a physical offense that contrasts the spread and finesse of most in the state. They’ll also find an intimidating and tradition-rich environment that spans generations of support and creates an atmosphere visiting coaches compared to a Hollywood version of Texas’ passionate high school football culture.

“That would be a place,” Overton said, “where you could say, ‘Yeah, this is truly Friday Night Lights.’”

Longview has not lost a game at Lobo Stadium since October 2016 — 38-24 to Tyler John Tyler — and hasn’t fallen more than once in a season at home since 2003. Since 2001, the Lobos are 83-8 at home, including a 46-4 record in the last 10 full seasons.

The enormity of winning in the stadium surrounded by towering pine trees and steeped in history starts from arrival.

When Mesquite’s bus pulled up to Longview’s fieldhouse last year, the school day had just finished. Students weren’t disruptive — Dallas-area coaches said interactions at Longview have never been disrespectful — but Mesquite coach Jeff Fleener heard several kids bellow “Looooongview” as they dispersed.

Get to game time, and the daunting reception doesn’t ease.

Longview has more than 3,000 season-ticket holders, some of more than 50 years, coach John King said, and the demand outweighs the supply of chair-back seats on the home sideline. Many Longview fans, along with students and the marching band, sit in sections behind the visitors’ bench.

“It’s got an aura about it that you know you’re playing at a special venue, on top of you’ve been watching them on film all week and realizing one of them might try to decapitate you on a play,” Fleener said. “It’s already a little intimidating when you get off the bus because you’re been watching these monsters

on video all week.”

The contingent that fills Lobo Stadium is also one of the most loyal travel groups in the state, filling opposing sections almost every stop, perhaps because supporting the team from a one-high-school district one hour from the next closest Class 6A high school (Tyler Lee) requires an inherent commute anyway.

Most throughout the state recognized Longview’s support when 48,421 people watched the team’s 35-34 state championship win over Beaumont West Brook at AT&T Stadium, marking the fourth-highest UIL state championship single-game attendance in history.

But King has felt the deep allegiance even more since, as swaths of fans, including Longview graduates from the 1950s, some part of multi-generational Lobo football lines, congratulated and thanked him and the players for winning Longview’s first title in 81 years.

“They told me ‘I didn’t think it would happen in my lifetime,’” King said. “It put them in a different place ... knowing the Lobos truly belong as one of the premiere programs.”

Should Dallas-area teams facing Longview this season find a way to ignore the fervent fandom and frequent howling, challenging the Lobos on the field won’t be simple.

Longview plays from tworunning-back formations with frequent tight end use, a scheme many teams have strayed from as quick-tempo passing and five-wide-receiver sets have become more common.

The throwback strategy has

produced 20 straight wins — Longview’s last regular-season loss came in Mesquite to Overton’s 2017 Horn squad — and highlights the talent of dual-threat senior quarterback and Texas A&M commit Haynes King, the reigning Texas AP Player of the Year.

And it’s influenced how likely

Page 13 the strongest Dallas-area challenger in the regular season — Rockwall — operates.

When Rockwall coach Rodney Webb led Horn in 2010, his air-raid, one-running-back offense fell twice to Longview, including in the state quarterfinals.

Just after that playoff loss, Webb changed his offensive approach to be a more physical, forceful downhill rushing game, all while still allowing his skill players to shine at passing.

Webb wanted to contend for state championships, like Longview has and like he feels Rockwall is poised to do this season. He knew that would mean matching the Lobos’ toughness, foiling the players who spent their childhoods admiring Longview football and quieting the followers — and technological wolves — that so closely align with the program’s success.

“A lot of [my offensive philosophy] was born more from our interest in being able to compete with Longview,” Webb said. “They’re kind of an SEC version of a high school program. It’s blood and guts with them.”

Speaking 2 languages to your child not enough to make them bilingual

There are plenty of reasons to raise a child to be bilingual. Speaking a language tied to their family origins can help a kid stay close to their heritage. It allows them to converse with relatives they might not otherwise understand.

It lets them connect with a wider swath of the world. And a growing body of research suggests the way it rewires the brain may confer cognitive benefits that last into old age.

Language learning begins before a baby is even born, says Ellen Bialystok, a psychology professor at York University in Canada who studies the effects of bilingualism on the brain; in one 2013 study, infants from a few hours to a few days old already showed higher interest in the sounds of the language they heard in utero. When children grow up hearing more than one language, they may learn to pay attention in different ways than monolingual children. Bialystok’s own research has shown that as early as six months old, infants from bilingual households demonstrate stronger selective attention skills, meaning they’re better able to focus on relevant information while tuning out other stimuli to focus.

Bialystok thinks that these effects reverberate throughout the rest of the child’s life. Some studies have shown that bilingual adults do better on certain tests of attention, for example, and brain imaging studies have also found some differences in the physical architecture of their brains. But Bialystok thinks the biggest benefit comes much later in life — when bilingual adults seem to have greater resilience against dementia.

But full bilingualism takes effort — and speaking two languages at home doesn’t guarantee that your kids will do the same. The Pew Research Center found that only 57% of U.S. adults who identify as second-generation Latinx immigrants are bilingual or Spanish-dominant. That number drops to 24% in the following generation.

Despite their best efforts, many bilingual adults still end up with monolingual kids. And this isn’t only true in countries where English dominates: In a 2007 study, Annick De Houwer, a professor at the University of Erfurt in Germany surveyed nearly 2,000 bilingual families in a Dutch-speaking region of Belgium (collectively, the families spoke more than 70 other languages in addition to Dutch, but some of the more common ones were French, Turkish, English, and Arabic).

In nearly a quarter of those households, children spoke only Dutch.

Some parents approach bilingualism by dividing languages between family members: Maybe Mom speaks only English to the child, while Dad speaks only Spanish.

In the Belgian study, though, households using this approach were just as likely — one in four — to have monolingual children.

A better strategy, if both parents are native speakers, is for both of them to exclusively use the minority language at home. Or one parent could speak that language exclusively while the other parent uses both, De Houwer says. In general, the more exposure a child has to the minority language, the better their odds of learning it.

“My kids aren’t geniuses. They just had the opportunity.”

Simona Montanari, a professor at California State University, Los Angeles, studies bilingual and multilingual development and has conducted her own sort of experiment at home. Montanari, who’s Italian, speaks Italian to her two daughters; her American husband speaks English; and the girls had a Spanish-speaking babysitter from birth, she says. Now as teenagers, the girls are comfortable in both English and Italian, and advanced in Spanish at school. “They’re not geniuses,” Montanari says. “They just had the opportunity.”

Montanari also stresses the importance of more formal education, in addition to exposure inside the home: “It is ideal to learn language from multiple speakers,” she says. She was able to start an Italian-language immersion program at her daughters’ California school district, which also offers immersion programs in several other languages. She says finding peers for her daughters who spoke Italian was a big help, as was travel to Italy and Mexico.

If those things aren’t feasible — and for many families, they aren’t — you can help your kids learn two languages the same way you help them learn one: by talking to them a lot.

And while some parents worry that raising a child in two languages might set them behind in both, kids will have no problem learning the majority language where they live, Montanari says. “[In the U.S.], English will happen no matter what.” She says her own daughters were less proficient in English than in their other two languages when they started school, but quickly caught up.

De Houwer agrees that fears of language delay are misplaced. “There is no evidence of a general delay in language development in bilingually raised children.” And you have to add up what the child can do across both languages, she says: For example, in a 2014 study, De Houwer and her colleagues compared 31 toddlers from bilingual Dutch-French households to carefully matched kids from monolingual homes. At 13 months old, toddlers in the bilingual group understood 71% more words, on average, than the monolingual toddlers. “So there’s no delay there,” De Houwer says. “Quite the opposite.”

Even if a child doesn’t don’t become fully bilingual, smaller positive changes happen in the brain with lesser degrees of language learning, Bialystok says — and that doesn’t even include the other benefits of studying languages, like giving kids a broader experience of the world and its people. “It’s just good to learn other languages,” she says, “even if your brain didn’t change.”

EMS Subscription Program now taking applicants The City of Longview through the Emergency Medical Services provided by the Fire Department is committed to providing quality, affordable emergency ambulance care as a service to all residents of Longview. Since 2009, the Longview Fire Department has offered an EMS Subscription Program to Longview residents in an attempt to help offset the rising cost of out-of-pocket medical expenses. With the typical cost associated with EMS transports averaging $800 - $1000 per response, the program limits any out-of-pocket EMS expenses to $70/year. For the Longview resident, that $70 annual fee is the maximum out-of-pocket expense for EMS transport to either of Longview’s two hospitals. The single fee covers those - who are eligible - living in the subscribed household.
