Longview grad rate 9th in nation The 2016-17 school year saw a national rise for the percentage of seniors graduating on time from high school. At 85%, this was a 1% increase from the previous year and a 5% five years prior to that. Longview then has something to be proud of as the graduation rate for 2016-17 was 94.1%, securing a spot within the top 10.

came in 9th place in the country, beating out several other Texas cities that made the top 50, including Tyler (91.9%, 39th place) and Texarkana (92.3%, 30th place).

The only city within the state to outdo Longview was Wichita Falls (96.7%, 1st place).

The skills necessary for 21st century society and the information age require that schools reevaluate their mission, vision and goals to reflect how they will prepare students for the demands of a world in which immediate access to droves of information has led to increased value placed on what the National Education Association calls the “Four Cs”: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.

Educational approaches that use Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) are pushing the learning capacity of students by focusing on inquiry, problem-solving, and innovation.

Maybe you are all of these things and more. Maybe, we need to look at educators in a new context of what teaching really is in most schools, and whether it should be given cultural, economic and technological change.

LISD commercial wins award Longview ISD received the International Hermes Award from Dean Waskowiak, president of Encore Multimedia during the special board meeting Wednesday, October 30th.

“We’ve been doing marketing for Longview ISD and we love it, it’s incredible,” Waskowiak said. “We entered one of our very first commercials that we did for LISD into the Hermes Award.”

Out of 6,500 entries from the U.S. and Canada for various catergories.

“To get any (prize) is a good thing… and we ended up winning a Platinum (the highest award for a category),” Waskowiak said.

SWEPCO AEP DONATION Board members listened to a Jobs for America’s Graduates presentation from Mark Robinson, the external affairs manager from SWEPCO AEP. “There are two communities that were asking for $50,000 from the AEP Foundation. As we dug into the requests, we recognized that the other request, up in Ohio, was not in our service territory,” Robinson. “So they declined that and added the additional $50,000 to our request.”

This means that LISD will be getting a $100,000 from JAG. SWEPCO believes that training and retaining the proper talent in our community is key to long term success.

Judson’s Randall Bruton talked to the board about the work that his students have been doing with robotics, game design and other STEAM opportunities. He showed off 3D printed gears that students had made as well as some video game 3D designs and a robot that they had built.

‘Snapshot Day’ numbers for UIL released Longview High School has certified 2,186.5 students for the UIL’s biennial “Snapshot Day” realignment report.

The numbers are used by combining 2,094 full-time Longview High students, 29 part-time LHS students (which are calculated as 14.5 students), and 78 Early Graduation High School students.

According to UIL policy, students attending school less than full-time, students receiving less than four hours of instruction per day, “shall be counted as a half (.5) student each.”

While the overall total

of 8,541 students is slightly up from the 8,531 students reported at the end of the 2018-19 school year in June, SuperWILCOX intendent Dr. James Wilcox said the administration “does not put much stock” in the changes.

“There’s always some variation in these [enrollment numbers] from week-to-week and year-to-year, but it’s not something we’re concerned

about,” he said. “Some years we’re up, some years we’re down.”

Wilcox added that the greater Longview area itself “is continuing to grow as a community.”

“Longview ISD will continue to grow with it, that much is certain,” he said.

“Our focus is on continuing to provide the best educational opportunities for all the students of Longview.”

Districts are required to mark enrollment data on Snapshot Day — the last Friday of October — and report it to the TEA by December.

The data is collected for sev-

eral reasons, including to determine funding from the state, the biennial UIL realignment, and accountability ratings.

Everhart celebrates cultural diversity JL Everhart hosted a program for National Hispanic/ Latino & International Day on Friday, Oct. 25.

Esther Davis directed the inclusive program of 11 classes ranging from grades 1-5. “I want to thank all the parents for the early morning practices, support, encouragement and all you continue to do for our school,” said @JLEverhartJaguars principal, Cassandra James.

Dance choreographers for the program were Marisol Hilerio, Bitia Saravia, Aura Djurisic, Lorena Jimenez, Magali Velazquez, and Esther Davis.

Costumes were created by JL Everhart teachers, parents and grandparents. The breathtaking scenery was created by Gaspar Nieto.

Students listened to presentations and were able to ask Career Day presenters a number of important questions to get them excited about future careers. Students were also encouraged to attend school in their aspiring career attire.

Students get hands on with Stock Market Longview High School students competed in the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge on Thursday, Oct. 24, at the Reserve.

The JA Stock Market Challenge is an unpredictable ride through the highs and lows of the stock market! All the energy and excitement of the stock trading floor was simulated in this innovative, high-tech event.

Teams of four competed in a race to accumulate the highest portfolio while learning the nuances of investing, trading and strategy. LHS sent four teams to the event.

Each team began the game with $1,000,000 trading dollars to invest in fictitious stocks.

Once the trading began, every 60 seconds was a new trading day in a volatile market.

Teams bought and sold stocks from “traders” that instantly sent trades to the system.

Teams received news releases and “Hot Stock” tips that helped them evaluate stock performance.

The team with the largest portfolio after 60 days of trading wins!

Longview wins second matchup with Tyler schools

I

n front of a capacity crowd on Senior Night, the Longview Lobos dominated the Tyler Lee Red Raiders 49-7 to remain undefeated on the season, and claim at least a share of another District 11-6A crown.

Senior defensive back Patrick Webb returned two interceptions for touchdowns as the Lobo defense limited Tyler Lee to barely 100 yards of total offense on the night, and most of that coming late in the game.

On offense it was Haynes King, Kaden Meredith, and the Lobo receiving corps providing a balanced attack that rolled up nearly 400 yards.

Mesquite vs Longview

Lobos can claim outright district title with victory MESQUITE — There’s only one game standing between the Longview Lobos and a second-straight 11-6A District Championship... the Mesquite High “Skeeters.”

Longview has rolled through the regular season undefeated and state-ranked as another post-season journey looms, and the final piece of the regular season puzzle will be put into placed Nov. 8th at Hanby Stadium in Mesquite.

“We have a lot of respect for KING Mesquite High, in many ways our programs are built the same,” said Coach John King.

And the numbers back this up. Mesquite’s winning record this season comes largely as a result of a stout Skeeter defense combined with a methodical ball-control offense.

“It’s going to be important for our team to play solid fundamental football, and not let JACKSONJAMERSON mental mistakes prevent us from controlling the momentum,” King said. “We expect Mesquite to play us very aggressive and physical, and not let up until the final whistle. So we’re going to have to do the same, on both sides of the ball as well as special teams.”

King cited the Lobo defense’s ability to prevent opposing teams from long sustained drives as key this season.

“We’ve still got to keep improving and getting better each week,” he said. “Pleased with the strides we’ve shown against Tyler Lee, we’ll enjoy this win then get right back to work getting ready for Mesquite.”

Longview controlled the game from the opening drive, with Meredith scoring from 4 yards out and Philip Washington catching a Haynes King pass for another score, as the Lobos took a 14-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

But in the second half, the Lobos started rolling.

“Coming into the season we had to replace some guys on offense, especially up front on the line, so it’s good to see how our younger guys have risen to the occasion and followed the example of [returning starters] Tim Polk and Parker Cox,” King said.

But with the wind behind their sails, King said he knows that “ball games aren’t played on paper.”

“We’re going to have to execute and play our game for four full quarters,” he said.

What are the best ways to prevent bullying in schools?

A new study identifies the most effective approaches to prevention

All 50 U.S. states require schools to have a bullying prevention policy.

But a policy, alone, is not enough. Despite the requirement, there’s been a slight uptick in all forms of bullying during the last three years.

Bullying can look like experienced basketball players systematically intimidating novice players off the court, kids repeatedly stigmatizing immigrant classmates for their cultural differences, or a middle-school girl suddenly being insulted and excluded by her group of friends.

Bullying occurs everywhere, even in the highest-perform-

ing schools, and it is hurtful to everyone involved, from the targets of bullying to the witnesses—and even to bullies themselves. October is National Bullying Prevention Month, so it’s a good time to ask ourselves: What are the best practices for preventing bullying in schools? That’s a question I explored with my colleague Marc Brackett from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, in a recent paper that reviewed dozens of studies of real-world bullying prevention efforts.

As we discovered, not all approaches to bullying prevention are equally effective. Most bullying prevention programs focus on raising awareness of the problem and administering consequences. But programs

that rely on punishment and zero tolerance have not been shown to be effective in the U.S.; and they often disproportionately target students

Bystander intervention, even among adults, only works for some people—extroverts, empaths, and people with higher social status and moral engagement. Many approaches that educators adopt have not been evaluated through research; instead, educators tend to select programs based on what their colleagues use.

We found two research-tested approaches that show the most promise for reducing bullying (along with other forms of aggression and conflict). They are a positive school climate, and social and emotional learning.

BUILDING A POSITIVE SCHOOL CLIMATE

School climate can be difficult to define, though possible to measure. It is the “felt sense” of being in a school, which can arise from a greeting, the way a problem is resolved, or how people work together; it is a school’s “heart and soul,” its “quality and character.” Schools with a positive climate foster healthy development, while a negative school climate is associated with higher rates of student bullying, aggression, victimization, and feeling unsafe.

The elements of a positive climate may vary, but may often include norms about feelings and relationships, power and how it is expressed, and media consumption. Social norm engineering is a conscious process that builds a positive culture among student peers and school adults that becomes self-reinforcing. Like a healthy immune system, a positive school climate promotes optimal health and reduces the chances of dysfunction or disease.

Leadership is key to a positive climate. Is bullying minimized as a “normal rite of childhood,” or is it recognized as the harmful peer abuse that it is? Do leaders understand that uninterrupted, severe bullying can confer lifelong negative consequences on targets of bullies, bullies, and witnesses?

Are school leaders committed to promoting all children’s positive psychological health, or do they over-rely on punishing misbehavior? Can they discern between typical developmental processes that need guidance

versus bullying that needs assertive intervention? Are educators empathic to their students, and do they value children’s feelings?

Next, are teachers prepared to deal with bullying? Students consistently report that teachers miss most incidents of bullying and fail to help students when asked. A majority of teachers report that they feel unprepared to deal with classroom bullying. Some teachers bully students themselves, or show a lack of empathy toward children who are bullied. Teachers report that they receive little guidance in “classroom management,” and sometimes default to the disciplinary strategies they learned in their own families growing up.

However, reforming school climate should involve all stakeholders—students and parents, as well as the administrators and teachers—so a school’s specific issues can be addressed, and the flavor of local cultures retained. FAFSA Drive set for November 13 at LHS We have a great opportunity to host a FAFSA Drive (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) with the assistance of financial aid officers from UT Tyler on Wednesday, Nov. 13, in the computer lab in Room 266 at LHS from 2-7 p.m.

There is a lot of information to get to parents, so please decide how we can make this clear and get it in their hands through media and The Voice. Liz, we also need an EdConnect call soon because to participate, parents must already

have an FSA ID, which requires them to have done some work on the FAFSA website.

“The Day of the Dead in Mexico is one of the big celebrations throughout the year. Because of the nature of the Day of the Dead, we wanted kids that are little bit more mature and could handle the material and do the performance,” said South Ward Principal Joaquin Guerrero.

“Last year the play was performed by students that were bilingual. This year, we’re integrating both the English speaking students and the bilingual students.”

By having both groups of students perform together, Guerrero’s aim is to bring more understanding between English speaking students and bilingual students.

“What we’re trying to do is bring both groups of students together so that they learn from each other. Not just language, but also in culture,” Guerrero said. “In the spring, we’re doing a Black History presentation and both groups will be a part of that as well. Our vision is that as kids learn to work together, then they become more understanding of each other and their cultures.”

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is well known, and involves teaching skills of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision making, and relationships management.

Evidence-based SEL approaches have been shown to deliver cost-effective, solid results. Numerous meta-analyses, research reviews, and individual studies of hundreds of thousands of K-12 students show that SEL improves emotional well-being, self-regulation, classroom relationships, and kind and helpful behavior among students. It reduces a range of problems like anxiety, emotional distress, and depression; reduces disruptive behaviors like conflicts, aggression, bullying, anger, and hostile attribution bias; and it improves academic achievement, creativity, and leadership.

A study of 36 first-grade teachers showed that when teachers were more emotionally supportive of students, children were less aggressive and had greater behavioral self-control, compared to the use of behavior management, which did not improve student self-control.

One meta-analysis showed that developing emotional competence was protective against becoming a victim of bullying;

to be good investments, with $11 saved for every $1 spent.

Teachers also benefit from SEL. Those with emotional and social skills training have higher job satisfaction and less burnout, show more positive emotions toward their students, manage their classrooms better, and use more strategies that cultivate creativity, choice, and autonomy in their students. Teachers report that they want more SEL support to cultivate their own emotional and social skills, and to better understand their students’ feelings. But few teacher training programs focus on growing the teachers’ emotion regulation skills.
