Not enough money in ‘giving thanks’

By Matthew Prosser So I was in a local mart of commerce a few days ago, attempting to find some fertilizer in the lawn and garden section of this particular store, when I noticed the section had been utterly usurped of its stated purpose and replaced

by Christmas decorations.

My annoyance at being unable to find the fertilizer aside, I could not help but marvel at how sudden the change in the holiday season from All Hallow’s Eve to Yuletide.

As the kindly elder man (who helped me find the fertilizer) rang my purchases up, I could not help but remark: “What happened to Thanksgiving?”

“Not enough money in it,” he quipped with a sly wink.

Indeed.

Am I the only one who notices that the mad consumerist dash toward Christmas commerce is no longer merely nipping at the heels of Thanksgiving, but relegating it to the doghouse altogether?

It seems like soon we won’t be calling “Black Friday” the first official Christmas shopping day, but the entire month of November.

How the STEM gender gap could improve

By Matt Barnum Chalkbeat On average, girls do as well as boys on elementary- and middle-school math tests. But by the time students enter the workforce, a big gender gap has emerged, with men earning nearly 80 percent of bachelor’s degrees in engineering and computer science.

A new study offers evidence that the disparity might be getting its start in elementary school classrooms.

The paper offers data from a single district, but the pattern it uncovers is striking. Girls are less likely to be nominated for, selected for, and continue in the district’s advanced math program. Despite their comparable math scores, the program loses girls at every step — a phenomenon that could contribute to fewer women entering math-focused fields later in life.

Harris brings years of education experience Robert Charles Harris was born in Shreveport Louisiana. Once graduating high school, he joined the United States Army in December of 1984. He finished Basic Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Once he completed basic training he was shipped to North Carolina to complete his Advanced Individual Training.

Harris returned to Shreveport Louisiana as a member of the Army Reserve. He remained in the Army reserve for a short period of time before joining the Regular Army as an Engineer where he served twenty-three years of service.

HARRIS Harris has served his country in a tremendous capacity. He has been stationed abroad as well as domestic.

Harris served in South Korea, at the border of the DMZ protecting America’s interest between South and North Korea, serving two tours in South Korea protecting America’s democracy.

He served in Germany for two years where he was deployed to Bosnia as a peacekeeping force, later being deployed to West Africa to train the Senegalese Army on Engineer Equipment.

Harris has served his country proudly and has earned many achievements as well as awards.

He has been awarded the Korean Medal, Global

War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Superior Unit Award, Army Achievement Award, Army Accommodation Award and the Meritorious Service Medal just to name a few.

Upon his retirement from active duty in March of 2008 he was written a personal letter by the President of the United States (George W. Bush) which stated “I extend to you my personal thanks and the sincere appreciation of a grateful nation for your contribution of honorable service to our country. You have helped maintain the security of the nation during a critical time in its history with a devotion to duty and a spirit of sacrifice in keeping with the proud traditions of military service. Your commitment and dedication have been an inspiration for those who will follow in your footsteps, and for all Americans who join me today in saluting you for a job extremely “well done.” My best wishes to you for happiness and success in the future.” (signed George W. ‘Raise Your Hand Texas’ announces launch of Texas public education advocacy effort Raise Your Hand Texas is excited to announce the launch of a statewide pro-public education advocacy effort. Led by 13 regional advocacy directors, the new effort will contribute to Raise Your Hand’s overall mission of supporting public education in Texas by working to grow a pro-public education constituency across the state. These directors will work alongside educators, community members, families, and business leaders to help Texans raise their voices regarding the importance of public education in their communities throughout election season and future legislative sessions.

The new Raise Your Hand staff bring a varied and complementary set of experiences to this work. About half the group are former educators — teachers, principals, administrators, and one former school board president — and half have relevant backgrounds in policy-making, organizing, and journalism. They are positioned in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Central Texas, El Paso, East Texas, West Texas, the Panhandle, the Gulf Coast, and the Rio Grande Valley.

The team recently completed a four-week orientation in Aus-

tin, where they deepened their knowledge of Texas education policy and politics, strengthened their community organizing skills, and learned about Raise Your Hand’s programmatic initiatives.

Like many in the education community, Raise Your Hand was encouraged by lawmakers’ determination to invest in our public schools during the 86th legislative session and we believe that House Bill 3 will have a positive impact on campuses across the state. The team will be central to Raise Your

Hand’s efforts to build on the momentum of the 86th session, strengthen ties between education advocates, and keep public education a top priority for lawmakers.

To this end, one of the team’s first tasks will be to work with local partners to organize public education-focused candidate forums in advance of the March 2020 primary election. Two storied football programs square off in bi-district contest

ESQUITE — Longview extended their state best winning streak to 26 games and secured the outright District 11-6A title with a dominant 49-14 win over Mesquite (7-3) at Hanby Stadium.

With the win, the Lobos complete an undefeated 10-0 regular season — the 11th perfect regular season in school history — and its 40th district championship.

“It’s something we take a lot of pride in, but at the same time it’s not the ultimate goal,” said Coach John King. “Winning district means a lot, and we’ll enjoy this win, but starting tomorrow you can throw it all out the Champs|Continued to page 13

For the first time in 82 years the Temple Wildcats (8-2) will come to Lobo Stadium.

“Temple is a program we have tremendous respect for,” said Coach John King. “Temple head coach) Scott Stewart does an excellent job of preparing and motivating his players to excel.”

It will be the sixth matchup between two of the most storied high school programs in the state, a contest with tremendous history in schoolboy athletics.

KING Temple’s last visit to Longview came in 1937, in the Class 1A State Quarterfinals, where the Lobos fell behind 12-6 at halftime before a 40-yard pass reception in the third quarter put the Lobos on top 13-12. Frank Lebus finished the game off with a 3-yard run in the 4th quarter as Longview knocked off Temple, 19-12.

Longview traveled to Woodson Field in Temple in 1940 and 1954. The 1940 meeting was also a 2A State Quarterfinal playoff game, one that saw the mighty Wildcats jump out to an 18-0 lead before Longview crawled back to 18-13 in the fourth quarter. Temple’s stalwart halfback Ed Dusek controlled the day though, and a late score ended Longview’s hopes of a comeback. BALTIMORE — Longview High School graduate Chris Davis and his wife Jill have given a $3 million gift to help fund an expansion of the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital (UMCH) at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC).

Their generous gift is the largest philanthropic donation from a Baltimore sports figure to UMMC. The funds are allocated for the construction of a state-of-the-art pediatric hybrid catheterization and operating room that will allow UMCH to provide the most technologically advanced care to pediatric patients locally, regionally and nationally, and position the hospital to continue to meet the growing needs of seriously ill children.

“This remarkable gift from Chris and Jill Davis will benefit children throughout the state of Maryland and beyond,” said Mohan Suntha, MD, MBA, president and chief executive officer at UMMC. “It will provide critical support to expand the resources and technology available at the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital – including a new cardiac catheterization lab and operating room -- allowing our world-class experts in children’s heart disease to provide the most advanced care possible. We are grateful to Chris and Jill Davis for their generosity and partnership.”

Chris and Jill Davis became champions of the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital’s mission in December 2016. They serve as ambassadors helping to raise awareness for childhood illnesses and UMCH’s role as a leader in patient care, pediatric disease research and teaching future generations of health care providers.

The Davises, who are from Dallas, Texas, regularly visit children staying in the hospital, and inspire smiles, laughter and hugs in these young patients who are coping with heart disease, cancer and other illnesses. The couple has delivered toys and other gifts, as well as donated nearly two dozen MamaRoo infant seats to the Drs. Rouben and Violet JiJi Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at UMCH. During baseball seasons, Jill Davis, a trained pediatric nurse, has spent time volunteering in the NICU at UMCH. For the last three summers, the Davises have hosted “Crush’s Homers for Hearts,” a charity home run derby event at Oriole Park at Camden Yards that benefits the UMCH Children’s Heart Program. To date, the events have raised more than $250,000.

Chris Davis was named the Orioles’ 2019 nominee for Major League Baseball’s prestigious Roberto Clemente Award for the third straight year. As the league’s most prominent individual player award, Roberto Clemente Award nominees repre-

sent the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions.

Chris exemplifies this honor through his family’s work with the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) and UMCH, and various programs throughout the Baltimore community.

Again it was the powerful Lobo defense who controlled the game, holding Mesquite to little over 200 yards of total offense, forcing three turnovers and a defensive touchdown for the second-straight game.

Kaden Meredith led the Longview rushing attack with 161 yards rushing and three touchdowns, while 255-pound fullback Kevin “Minivan” Jones powered through the defense for 58 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Senior quarterback Haynes King, had 156 yards of total offense and ran for one touchdown.

Leading 21-7 late in the first half Longview’s defense came up with the game-changing turnover as Malik Cannon, blitzing off the edge, forced a Mesquite fumble which was picked up by Cedric Smith. Smith raced 78 yards the other way for a touchdown to give Longview a commanding 28-7 halftime lead.

In this week’s bi-district playoff game Longview will host Temple at Lobo Stadium.

“Temple is a program a lot like Longview, they have the same kind of tradition of excellence there, so we’re expecting a very competitive game,” King added.

King cited the Lobo defense’s ability to prevent opposing teams from long sustained drives as key this season.

“Really pleased by the effort we’ve had from Drew Beltran,

Tyshawn Taylor, Tyree Hale, Kybrien Jackson-Jamerson, Sawyer Goram-Welch, Cedric Smith, and just the entire defense this year,” he said. “They have, more often than not, put our offense in a position to go out there and win games for us.”

US students show low-to-medium tech skills

U.S. 8th graders can use computers to gather basic information and make simple edits. They also have some awareness of security risks in the digital world. But they’re less likely to understand the purpose of sponsored content on a website, use generic mapping software or know how to control color and text when creating a presentation.

Those are among the 2018 results of the International Computer and Information Literacy Study released Tuesday by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement, which also conducts other large-scale international studies.

Across the 12 education systems participating in the study, the average score on the computer and information literacy portion of the test was 496 on a scale from 100 to 700. A quarter of all students scored at the lowest level, and 18% scored below the lowest level. U.S. students scored 519 — below Denmark, the Republic of Korea and Finland, but ahead of several other countries, including Germany, France and Chile.

Still, the results, officials said, suggest students don’t “develop sophisticated digital skills” just because they grow up as

digital natives.

“Confidence, and crucially, competence, in the use of digital devices is of vital importance globally,” Dirk Hastedt, IEA executive director, said in a statement. “It is essential that young people are taught these skills at schools, and that their teachers are well supported in delivering this bedrock of modern education.”

The findings confirm other recent studies in the U.S. showing students can be easily misled by digital media messages.

The U.S. actually didn’t meet the IEA’s strict sampling requirements of having at least 75% of students in each school completing the assessment. That means the organization can’t confirm the results are truly representative of the entire U.S. But Julian Fraillon, the ICILS study’s director, noted participation rates in the U.S. were still high — 70% for students and 65% for teachers answering questions Skills|Continued to page 17

BAND |Continued from page 11 gave it their all on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Stephen F. Austin State University. The return to the competition was a decision made by the band director Rhonda Daniel who was hired this past summer.

Director of Bands Rhonda Daniel said the entire band and staff was “extremely excited to bring this tradition back!”

“We had to keep up the intensity in our practices for the two weeks following UIL in order to compete at State Level,” she said.

The NAMMB contest sees bands compete with military marching where the band marches in precise, straight lines while performing live music.

Daniel said the band’s initial goals were to “have our best performance of the year and earn a first division rating at the contest.”

“We knew going into this that the Lobo Band has always made a first division at NAMMB,” she said.

Although it was LHS’ first time competing in years, all five judges rated the band first division along with winning first place in 6A. Kingwood’s band was the 6A competition for Daniel’s band to defeat which they did with their 9-minute-long performance.

Once again, Daniel said, “our students rose to the challenge and put an impressive performance on the field.”

“The NAMMB contest is a competition, but also a celebration of military-style marching,” she said. “It was exciting to see our students experience that for the first time!”

Longview ISD Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox said

this accomplishment “is just the latest indication of the incredible things that are happening with our elite marching band.”

“It also shows just how

committed Mrs. Daniel is — not only continuing the Lobo Band’s longtime tradition of excellence — but to pushing it to even greater heights!” he said.

Why Standard Time all year is the healthy choice

Changing our clocks twice a year has little benefit, economic or otherwise, so isn’t it time to stop this antiquated practice? The good news is that some provincial legislatures agree and are currently considering bills to adopt permanent time. As experts on biological rhythms, we support the switch to a permanent time.

However, in doing so, we must adopt Standard Time (ST), not Daylight Savings Time (DST, or “summer time”).

There is general agreement that getting rid of the time switch twice a year would be a good idea.

After time switches, particularly the “spring forward,” there are increased rates of car accidents, heart attacks, strokes and workplace injuries. So why does it matter whether we adopt permanent DST or permanent ST? All the processes happening in our bodies are co-ordinated by our

biological clocks, located in our brains and all other organs. The argument in favour of permanent DST is that there would be more light in the evening. While this is true, we can’t change the number of hours of light in the day. More evening light means less morning light. But importantly, it’s the light in the morning that is most important in resetting our biological clocks. Consider this: If we all spent our time outdoors getting plenty of natural light, and could choose when to get up and go to sleep as our ancestors did, our internal clocks would be set by the sun so that we would tend to wake up at dawn, and then, depending on the time of year, stay awake for a while in the evening after dark. Our body clocks would be in sync with the sun clock. The problem is that we live in societies that force us to get up and go to work or school at times that we don’t get to choose.

Chronobiologists, the name given to scientists who study bio-

logical timing, call this situation “social jet lag,” when the body clock doesn’t match the social clock. Just like the jet lag you get when you fly across time zones and find yourself out of sync with the new local time, social jet lag can cause many problems including disrupted sleep, increased risk of accidents, lower productivity at work and in school, and increased risk of negative health impacts. Permanent ST would move “social time” closer to our natural “body time,” while permanent DST would move social time further away.

Can just one hour make such a big difference? We already have evidence from a huge natural experiment that we are all part of: the difference between people living on the western and eastern edges of any time zone. The sun moves continuously across time zones, but we are arbitrarily divided up into onehour blocks. People on the western edge are forced to get up an hour earlier than people on the east,

according to sun time. Analysis of health data from millions of people shows that people on the western edges of time zones get about 19 minutes less sleep every night than people on the east, and also have significantly higher rates of obesity, diabetes and heart attacks than people on the eastern edges Permanent DST was tried in the United States in the past century but was quickly repealed when the public found that waking up in the dark is hard, and energy savings were negligible.

Let’s not repeat that failed experiment in Canada. Since Canadians live even further north, the challenge would be even more profound in our country. Recently, several provincial legislatures have considered stopping the switch, with a bill currently on the table in British Columbia, but in all cases the plan is to switch to DST, not ST. — Nicolas Cermakian is a professor in the department of psychiatry at McGill University.

The next round of testing will occur in 2023, with the assessment tasks further expanded to reflect new applications.

The Children’s Heart Program at UMCH saw some medical marvels this past year.

One-year-old Tessa Agnoli received a heart transplant earlier in 2019, the youngest patient to have one at UMCH. Also this year, 12-year-old Lindsey Le had a double lung-heart transplant, a surgery that is rarely performed across the nation.

The pediatric hybrid catheterization/operating room will be a comprehensive surgery center equipped to perform lifesaving pediatric surgeries. In the Children’s Heart Program alone, surgeries have increased by 50 percent within the past year, and the new addition will help it reach its fullest potential.
