T

he Longview High School Lobo Band earned a First Division rating from the entire judging panel to bring home its 70th consecutive SUPERIOR University Interscholastic League marching contest rating.

With the top honor, the Big Green Marching Machine maintains the state record for consecutive superior ratings in a state contest.

LHS has been ranked First Division since the inception of the UIL. Director of Bands Rhonda Daniel praised the discipline, DANIEL perseverance, and hard work her young people demonstrated Oct. 19th at the regional competition in Homer Bryce Stadium, on the campus of Stephen F. Austin University.

I accepted the position of Chief Executive Officer of East Texas Advanced Academy (ETAA) in partnership with a school district in East Texas where I served as principal at a middle and elementary school simultaneously. advanced my career to becoming the CEO of ETAA. Now, I have oversight of six campuses, which includes responsibilities surrounding personnel, budget, curriculum and retention.

People, candy have parallels

Dear Lobos, I hope you guys are off to an awesome start to the school year. Matter of fact, we are already about 1/3 of the way through! This is truly my favorite time of the year with some of my favorite pastimes: football, being outdoors and knowing the holidays are right upon us.

I love love love Halloween and love that it is the first holiday that kicks of the season of fun. One of the reasons I love Halloween so much is the candy.

Yep, I admit it – I love candy. I got to thinking while I was driving the other day that we can draw a lot of parallels between ourselves and candy.

How many of y’all have seen the movie “Forrest Gump?” One of Forrest’s favorite lines was, “Life is like a box of chocolates.”

Forrest wasn’t too far off when he made that statement, because life truly IS like a box of chocolates. And since Halloween just occurred, and you know I love Halloween candy, not just some of it, but all of it, let’s title this column “Life is Like a Box of Halloween Candy.”

I got to thinking about how when my brothers and I were little, my Dad would sometimes bring home a box of candy for us during the holiday season. We had our favorite chocolates that we would fight over in each box and then there were those “mystery chocolates” that we would take a bite out of and then spit back out! Of course we have those people in our lives as well.

Just one bite and we know not to go back for more. Haha!

As you enjoy this upcoming holiday season and probably have more than your fair share of candy, reflect on what type of candy you are to others. Try your hardest to be that sweet chocolate. Or if you are feeling a little bit sour, at least get to the sweet part pretty quickly. And definitely think of me when you are enjoying those chewy Twizzlers. See, so life really is like a box of… Halloween candy.

Learning for the always-on generation

Some veteran teachers are noticing their traditional teaching methods are just not as effective with students in classrooms today as they once were.

Many educators are observing that the students of today prefer to learn differently. This new classroom reality is creating quite the debate about current teaching methods and the ability of the digital generations to learn.

Digital bombardment has transformed today’s learners into digital learners. Moreover, because of this transformation, the digital generations have developed new preferences for learning. Jukes, Schaaf and Mohan (2015) identified nine key learning attributes of the digital generations. In the next post of this series, readers will explore these new attributes of digital learning and learn about tools and strategies to use in order to align with their students’ learning preferences.

The truth is, multitasking cognitively demanding activities proficiently is biologically impossible – then the human brain does not work in that fashion. On the other hand, non-cognitively demanding activities can be improved over time with practice. What the research says is that productive multitasking is really about having a good memory, capable of being able to pay attention to several familiar tasks at one time, while also being highly adept at task-switching.

This isn’t the way the older generations grew up. This is not what most of us experienced as children.

John Medina’s Brain Rules is an awesome book that explores the multitasking myth. Medina (2008) says that educators need to acknowledge that multimedia multitasking is an everyday reality of life—that students do not suffer notable cognitive shortcomings as they multitask; rather, they are learning more, and they are more adept at finding answers to deep questions, in part because they can search effectively and access collective intelligence.

Job prospects given some ‘hands on’ time Last week, Longview Early Graduation High School (LEGHS) students’ attendance at Lift and Move USA. The event was held Wednesday, Oct. 16, and sponsored by BOSS Crane & Rigging. This event showcased careers in crane, rigging, power gen, petro-chemical, commercial construction, bridge/ highway/government/military and manufacturing.

LEGHS students were able to experience hands on activities to give them a glimpse into potential careers. Students also participated in mock interviews with several local companies who gave them feedback to strengthen their interviewing skills.

LEGHS is designed to provide a safe environment for students who would like to complete their requirements for graduation early, to provide students the opportunity to earn dual credits and to provide experiences that enhance student’s learning.

Beard to serve as vice president of TASB Longview ISD Place 6 trustee Ted Beard has been appointed as vice president of the Texas Association of School Boards.

“I’m going to continue to advocate for quality, accessible public education that’s properly funded for all of the school districts, not just in Region VII but for the entire state of Texas,” he said. “I am blessed to bring a perspective from the greater Longview community and the entire Region VII service area.”

LISD Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox praised Beard’s appointment, crediting his “tireless advocacy on behalf of students and their families.”

“Ted is an excellent BEARD choice for first vice president,” he said. “For duration of his time on the LISD Board of Trustees he has proven himself to be a strong defender and advocate of public education in Texas. I am certain he will continue to be so in his new role on the TASB board.”

A nonprofit organization providing advocacy and support for school districts in the state, TASB membership includes all 1,025 Texas school districts, 20 regional education service centers, 50 community colleges, 19 central appraisal districts, and 133 shared service arrangements. TASB represents the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state (more than 7,000 school board members), serving more than 5.4 million Texas students.

First elected to the LISD Board of Trustees in 1998, Beard has served in various capacities, including assistant secretary, vice-president, and twice as president.

Beard was appointed to the TASB Risk Management Fund Board in November 2007 and currently serves as chair. He is a 2012 graduate of Leadership TASB and an Honorary Life Member of PTA. He also is a member of the Texas Caucus of Black School Board Members, where he has

served as president.

A retired sergeant-major from the United States Army, and combat veteran of Desert Shield/Storm, Beard was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He later served in combat in during Iraqi Freedom. Beard later earned a bachelor’s in human services from LeTourneau University and now works as an equal employment opportunity counselor for the Social Security Administration.

Board approves district-wide IB training Longview ISD Board of Trustees approved district-wide International Baccalaureate (IB) training for all district teaching staff during their regular meeting Monday, October 9th.

Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox said this training is part of the district’s larger goal “to provide the best educational offerings to the students in our care.”

“One of the strategic action steps for the district is to provide all district staff with training in the IB philosophy,” he said.

The cost for providing this training to all staff will be approximateWILCOX ly $760,000.

Federal and state grant funds will be utilized to pay for these trainings and coaching, as well as some local funds.

Recognized worldwide, the IB program is a demanding college preparatory curriculum in the classical liberal arts. LISD is one of the only districts in the country that offers an IB program from elementary through high school.

Wilcox said that, unlike most IB programs across the country, Longview ISD’s program is offered completely free of charge to students.

Longview High School graduated its first IB seniors in 2011 and IB Dean of Instruction Linda Buie said the program continues to grow each year.

“If you look at the names of these IB graduates, and look at the things they’re doing now, it’s really quite remarkable,” she said. “These young people are going to change the world.”

OUT-OF-DISTRICT TRANSFERS Board members also approved accepting 56 more non-resident students seeking transfer into the district. This is in addition to the 504 outof-district students accepted at the start of the school year.

Of the 56 new students accepted, 46 (or 82 percent) cited “educational opportunities” at Longview ISD as their primary reason for transferring into the district.

Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox reiterated that the transfers come from “in and around the Longview area.”

“It’s a testament to the quality education being provided by our excellent staff, our excep-

tional academic offerings, and the reputation of our students’ achievements, that these families are choosing to enroll their students in Longview ISD,” he said. “These aren’t move-ins — though we certainly get quite a few of those each year — but these are residents of other communities, who are willing to drive to Longview for their children to attend our schools.

That’s a big deal.”

Ron Kent, LISD Supervisor for Administrative and Pupil Services, said attendance and discipline records “have been checked for all students.”

“Principals have been given the information and the opportunity to make a recommendation on each student,” he said.

IN OTHER BUSINESS The board later approved nominating candidates Julie

Woods and Vance Freeman to the Board of Directors for the Gregg County Appraisal District.

“Both of these individuals are excellent representatives of the interests of our community, and they have our full support,” said Dr. Wilcox.

In each odd numbered year, the Gregg Appraisal District

elects a new Board of Directors.

The directors are nominated by the various taxing jurisdictions throughout Gregg County and are elected by those jurisdictions.

Each taxing unit that is entitled to vote may nominate by resolution adopted by its governing body, one candidate for each position to be filled on the Board

Achieving the highest levels of performance has been the focus since summer practices started in July, Daniel said, and it has paid off.

“We are blessed with talented students, wonderful parents, a hard-working band staff, and a school district that understands the importance of supporting its band,” she said.

Daniel added that these students “are an example for us all.”

“Students of all races, ethnic background, social and economic status—all shapes and sizes working together for the greater good of their fellow students, their school and our community,” she said. “They should make us all feel very blessed and proud to be a Lobo.”

The Longview High School Lobo Band specializes in military style marching that has distinguished them from other bands and has been a local tradition for more than 80 years.

The 2019-20 band has 265 members and was the largest band at the contest.

In addition to the various group events, Longview High School band members compete at UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest and also audition for The Texas Music Educators Region, Area and State bands.

Assistant Band Directors Arri Moore, Leigh Ann Dixon, Nathan Wise, Randy Carpenter, and Suzanna Wise also help direct the Longview High School Lobo Band.

Longview ISD Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox said this achievement is not only a testament to the high quality of students and staff, but the many parents and community members who support this program.

“Our young people are able to excel because our entire community believes in and supports our students,” he said.

“The long hours put in my these students, their teachers, as well as the many parents and volunteers, is what keeps this tradition of excellence alive.”

Campus leaders train for changes to IB LISD campus leaders were training Friday, Oct. 4, at the ESC building to prepare for their campuses becoming International Baccalaureate schools.

“Our district has made a commitment that every school is going to become an IB school,” said Linda Buie who is the dean of instruction and academic discipline for IB and AP programs at LHS. “Principals have selected people from their campus leaders…these people training here today will walk their campuses through the application to IB. Eventually IB will come in and do a formal authorization visit.”

The elementary schools will work towards getting the Primary Years program while middle schools will work at getting the Middle Years program.

“We have the diploma program at the high school, but we’re going to add the Middle Years program for the 9th and 10th graders because the Middle Years program actually goes from 6th to 10th,” Buie said.

A large number of faculty members are on site, splitting up into groups, learning more about the IB program and taking part in various exercises.

“IB is a wonderful educational program,” Buie said.

‘Senior Night’ matchup to clear playoff picture

ESQUITE — It took less than two minutes for the Longview Lobos to score on their opening possession, and it was all downhill for North Mesquite from there.

Kaden Kearbey took a Haynes King pass 45 yards on the third play of the game to start the scoring onslaught. On the next Lobo possession it was Kaden Meredith powering in for a three-yard score to give the Lobos a 14-0 advantage after the first.

In the second quarter Haynes King took to the air again, this time hitting Kyas Moore.

This was followed by another Meredith touchdown run from 27 yards.

The end result was a 55-0 destruction of North Mesquite at E.H. Hanby Stadium.

“We got out to a quick start and it really put North Mesquite in a bind,” said Coach

Longview’s ticket to the post-season is all but assured, but the final outcome of District 11-6A remains cloudy.

And the Lobos look to clear the picture with a “Senior Night” matchup against the Tyler Lee Raiders this week.

“Tyler Lee has made considerable strides this season, and KING we expect them to play a very competitive game,” said Coach John King. “[Tyler Lee head coach] Kurt Traylor has done an excellent job of building that program, and his players give tremendous effort.”

After struggling for several seasons, Tyler Lee has bounced back in 2019 with big wins over John Tyler, NaONOFRE cogdoches, Rockwally-Heath, North Mesquite, and has also looked impressive even in defeat losing narrowly to Mesquite High, Poteet and Rockwall in a 35-32 thriller last week.

“Some teams you can jump on early and just keep rolling, but that’s not the case for Tyler Lee,” King said. “They’re going to battle for four quarters.”

Not only that, King added, but it’s going to take a complete team effort on all sides of the ball.

“Obviously our defense has really carried us this season, but the offense is starting to come along in a big way, and I’ve been very pleased with the progress we’ve made in our special teams play,” he said.

Middle schools face off on the gridiron Great job to all our middle school stars on Monday, Sep. 30, during the middle school games and awesome job Foster Middle School marching band! The cheerleaders, majorettes, and Dragonettes put on an excellent show for the crowd. In 8th Grade gridiron action, Judson edged Foster 126, and Forest Park outlasted Lufkin 14-6. With the win Judson moves to 3-0 on the season. Foster drops to 2-1, and Forest Park improves to 1-2. In 7th Grade competition it was Foster over Judson 12-6, and Forest Park falling to Lufkin 22-6. For the season Foster is 3-0, Judson is 2-1, and Forest Park is 0-3. Keep up the great work everyone!

And take advantage they did. It was Drew Beltran, Tyshawn Taylor, Tyree Hale, Kybrien Jackson-Jamerson, and Sawyer Goram-Welch harassing North Mesquite ball carriers behind the line of scrimmage, and heads-up plays in the secondary by Malik Cannon and linebacker Cedric Smith.

But as always, King said, there’s still work to be done.

“Got to clean up those penalties,” he said. “A poorly-timed penalty can kill your momentum. We’re getting to the point in the season where we can’t let penalties cost us in clutch situations.”

Haynes King finished 14-of-17 passing for 208 yards and three touchdowns to three different Lobo receivers.

Kaden Kearbey finished with three catches for 64-yards, with Kyas Moore pulling in five receptions for 49 yards and a score. CJ Hopkins added three catches for 50 yards, including a nineyard touchdown catch and a 35-yard touchdown run.

Kaden Meredith totaled 94 yards on nine carries, with Xavier Jimmerson adding 56 yards on seven carries.

Students get their game on during tournament Thirsty Minds Media hosted an EA Little League Gaming Tournament at Ned E. Williams Friday, October 18 for grades 3-5.

Ned E. Williams will host multiple gaming tournaments for students throughout this school year and in May the top players at NED will battle the top players at Bramlette STEAM Academy.

Thirsty Minds owner, Joe Manns, connected with former NFL Vikings player Chase Baker for the kickoff of the tournament. Baker was excited to hang out with

LISD students and is ready to come back for round 2. Baker even took the time to show a few students some moves they can use on the field.

E Sports donated games for the students to test for the tournament. Manns is excited to start the first E Sports Little League.

“Not everyone can play sports or get involved in academic competitions, this is a way to get all kids involved and keep them excited about potential careers in the future,” Manns said.

Hudson lets loose their creativty with some painting Students at Hudson PEP harnessed their creativity by painting rocks for their Learn, Grow, Eat, Go! gardens.

Students were given a vegetable, vitamin, or health benefit and were asked to paint their rocks according to those three options.

Lobo University returns on Nov. 11 at Maude Cobb center The next upcoming Lobo University is really the College Fair at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, at Maude Cobb Convention & Activity Complex.

This event allows parents and students a great opportunity to find out about the excellent choices and support that exist for prospective college students.

Admissions recruiters from over 100 colleges and universities and military recruiters will be in attendance to talk to students and their parents about admission requirements and majors offered at each institution. Students may register and get a barcode that admissions officers can scan to get students’ contact information by going to https://register.gotocollegefairs.com.

Having the barcode on students’ telephone will give students and their families more time to visit with recruiters and avoid completing paperwork at each college table. Students and parents may also attend financial aid sessions.

It is my belief that we have a moral and legal obligation to bring out of our children what already exists within them.

A student’s zip code should not determine the quality of education they receive. Sixty-five percent of the children entering school today will end up working in jobs that don’t exist yet because the future of the economy is in STEM and that’s where the jobs of tomorrow will be. As a result, we strive to be a district-wide and state-wide blueprint for innovation and excellence.

Our students are encouraged to dream and dream big.

Our work is to empower school leaders by refocusing them on the vision and mission as well as equip them with the skills and knowledge that are necessary for growing teacher leaders. In other words, we will build their leadership capacity.

This includes putting systems and processes in place that will transform school culture aligned with a strong academic program. We begin our transformation process by revealing the practices, customs, frameworks and beliefs that cultivate and advance a positive climate, as well as promotes cooperation, consideration, accountability, risk-taking, collaboration, innovation and social awareness.

WHY CULTURE? The research is very clear; a strong school culture is an important foundation for student achievement and growth.

Instructional Culture: Schools with strong instructional culture retain more teachers and have better student achievement (TNTP, 2012).

Schools with weak instruc-

tional cultures lose twice as many effective teachers.

Schools with strong instructional cultures experience better student achievement in both math and ELA. Teacher-Student Relationships: Strong relationships between students and teachers fuel student engagement (and thus motivation), which supports development in academics and beyond (National Academies, 2018; Transcend, 2018).

Not all students get this experience; an effect that worsens as students age.

High expectations support a student’s sense of belonging in the learning environment, which is tied to student engagement (National Academies, 2018; Transcend, 2018).

Most teachers do not yet set high expectations for all students.

Educational systems do not reward a high expectations mindset as much as content and teaching methods.

By following the Professional Learning Community framework with fidelity and the Margret Kilgo’s framework for breaking down the standards, teachers have opportunities to collaboratively analyze data, make informed decisions, and integrate innovative approaches to instructional practices, such as Z-space. By fostering and growing teachers to be experts in their craft, teacher leaders arise, thus being the “boots on the ground,” so to speak, for my vision.

How we practice as educators is our “special sauce.” We value diversity, equity, and inclusion in our schools and build this into our philosophy of “culture conscious campuses,” where the student comes first. We seek strong managers of schools and classrooms and individuals who are dedicated to honing their craft while going the extra mile. We invest time and resources in developing our teachers and leaders. Teachers should be expected and allowed to step out of their comfort zones and exert leadership abilities that will enhance teaching and learning, which will lead to student achievement. It is a

matter of multiplying, having teacher leaders is equivalent to having an additional five or more leaders to assist on your campus.

With this in mind, teachers lead and facilitate “true” Professional Learning Communities where they are collaboratively disaggregating data and breaking down the state standards with the question of “What next?” These are highly structured, student centered, collaborative meetings where the end goal is student success. Teachers dive into the data and standards to understand their practice and best allocate time and resources to the biggest and most pressing needs. This is an ongoing process with constant observation, reevaluation, and collaboration to create the best learning environment for each individual student.

It is also ETAA’s belief that by cultivating, monitoring and advancing a positive climate in our schools unequivocally begins with the leader. Leaders must clearly define and communicate the organizational values, beliefs, rituals and expectations to all stakeholders in the simplest of terms.

ETAA’s teachers and staff are encouraged to interact. In

fact, time and space is planned for this. They share information, insight, knowledge, their particular skill set and constructive criticism. Consequently, this is building a culture of concern for one another’s progress and success, resulting in a welcoming environment that is conducive to teacher morale, self-esteem and commitment to educating. “When the teacher is ready, the student will appear.”

CONTIONOUS REFINEMENT It is my belief that a school models meaningful and challenging instruction for all students. Education is a means to an end for each of our students; therefore, it is my job to lead a network that fosters the highest level of excellence and education for our children.

Effective and strategic planning is at the forefront of this. When districts regularly measure school performance, expand high-potential programs, allow families to flow to the program that suits them best, give educators the latitude they need to do what’s best for the kids in their school and continuously refine all of these practices, districts see improved school performance over time.
