LOCATION HIGHLIGHTS

Iceland is world-renowned for its raw and volcanic landscape and has had a strong year pulling in a series of high-profile features and commercial campaigns.

AActive & dormant volcanoes ALagoons filled with icebergs ABlack deserts ASnow & glaciers ABlack lava fields

The country’s spectacular visuals became one of the chief selling points of Tom Cruise’s dystopian sci-fi Oblivion in 2013 and Darren Aronofsky’s biblical epic Noah will reach cinemas in 2014. Recent commercial campaigns have included a Hewlett Packard spot from RSA Films’ Jake Scott and an Indian shoot for soap brand Cinthol. Hit cable TV series Game of Thrones has been a regular visitor for the show’s wintry scenes. Iceland is one of the top global locations for dramatic wilderness landscapes due to its expansive volcanic plains, black-sand coasts and spectacular glaciers. It has the crews, the production facilities and a competitive 20% refund on eligible local spending. Crucially, the country’s wilderness feel is within easy reach of the capital, Reykjavik.

FINANCIAL INCENTIVES

CREW

Iceland's reimbursement programme offers a 20% refund on all qualified Icelandic production expenditure.

ALocal A range of production service companies with years of experience can help with all film production requirements in Iceland. They can assist with crew, equipment, casting, studios, locations and permits where needed.

There is no minimum percentage on either how much is shot or how much is spent. However, when more than 80% of the total production cost of a motion picture or television programme is incurred in Iceland, the reimbursement is calculated from the total production cost incurred within the European Economic Area.

Crews are high quality, friendly, hardworking people with a refreshing can-do spirit. They have also worked on a number of big Hollywood blockbusters and all speak fluent English.

If you, for example, spend 8 million in Iceland you may spend 2 million within the EEA area and get 20% of the 10 million.

Crews are non-union and some are self-employed. They work 12-hour shoot days and after that it is time and a half. There are no night or holiday premiums.

The reimbursement scheme does not cover the production of commercials or music videos and the project needs to feature either Iceland landscapes or culture. Projects receiving production grants from the Icelandic Film Fund are still eligible for the reimbursement scheme, as long as it does not exceed 85% of the total production cost.

AEntry requirements Tourist visas are fine for short visits. Contact your local Icelandic embassy for more information.

CLIMATE The mean annual temperature in the capital, Reykjavík, is -0.5C in January, which is warmer than New York, and 10.3C in July. In Iceland winter is from November to March, spring is April to May, summer is in June, July and August and autumn is September to October. From the middle of May until the middle of August, the sun only sets for around three hours a day. In mid-winter there are around five hours of effective daylight. These long and short periods of daylight add drama to the atmosphere with lingering twilight.

AMichael John Meehan,

Supervising Location Manager, Oblivion "There’s the black sand and great sense of desolation in Iceland. There are places in the world where you can get little pockets like that, but nowhere else has Iceland’s vast expanses that sweep to the horizon in that particular colour palette.” ALisa D’Costa, Producer

"We did consider Turkey and Greece, but finally settled on Iceland as it gave us the most variety in terms of terrain. We reworked a lot of the sequences based on what was available in terms of locations. We loved the idea of the geyser, the glacier and the waterfall.” ADow Griffith, Location Manager

"The accessibility is a major factor and gives Iceland an edge over places like Alaska. The locations look great and they’re easy to get to. Also, places like these in other parts of the world, which are both above timberline and glaciated, tend to be at high altitudes, which can cause problems for the crew in terms of acclimatisation. Everything here is at sea level.”

EQUIPMENT ALocal There are two equipment rental houses in Iceland who can supply cameras, grips and lighting as well as all other basic gear needed for a shoot. For more complicated shoots, they can bring in all the necessary equipment, such as Technocrane, Motion Control and Spacecam, from the UK within 48 hours. Iceland is Arri based. Framestore has a branch office in Iceland and Atlantic Studios has a 2,220 sq m sound stage with excellent production support areas and a 6,000 sq m studio lot. Atlantic also has access to a deep water swimming pool for underwater filming. Turner also has a Green Screen studio facility in Iceland. AEntry requirements If you are planning on bringing equipment in the ATA carnet system would be the best approach.

ASean Stiegemeier, Director

“On our second day of shooting we actually had a blizzard come through with gale-force winds that prevented us from shooting anything that day. Then we got lucky the day after and had mostly clear skies, which is something we only saw twice the entire month we were there working.”

CREW ALocal There is a good level of supporting crew available but key crew will need to be brought in from abroad. Crews are non-union and are a mix of freelancers and full-timers with local production houses. The standard shoot day is ten hours. AEntry requirements There are no restrictions on the number of foreign crew that can be brought in or mandatory foreignto-local crew ratios. Foreign crew must apply for a non-resident business visa to work in Vietnam.

EQUIPMENT ALocal The two main rental houses, SEAPS and HK Films, provide a good level of standard equipment but anything more specialised will need to be brought in from abroad. AEntry requirements Filming equipment brought into the country on a temporary basis needs to be declared upon arrival and departure.
