Loud roars of approval and applause greeted the news that Thomas Kemp and Alan Gibbens had been chosen by West Malling Parish Council to receive a Kent Community Award. A packed audience for Ronnie Scott’s jazz pianist James Pearson enjoyed seeing the surprise sprung on the duo who have grown the festival over 12 years.

The Music@Malling Festival was inspired by Tom, a West Malling lad, supported by a volunteer Committee under Alan’s Chairmanship from the outset. The musicians’ work with children in local primary schools composing and playing their own music, and the exceptionally high standard of the festival musicians were especially recognised.

The Award Scheme is sponsored by KCC, Kent Association of Parish Councils, and Kent’s High Sheriff.

A new start with the local Oracle Malling Action Partnership (MAP) was set up in 2006 to support the community and business life of West Malling and the eleven surrounding parishes. We are a not-for-profit Ltd Company.

MAP have supported a wide variety of local projects and events in different ways, from applying for funding, providing a temporary banking facility, insurance for volunteers, or ‘monitors’ on behalf of funders like the Lottery. We have supported a number of local projects at East Malling Community Centre, West Malling Farmers’ Market, and the Blue Plaque scheme which won a High Sheriff’s Award. We also continue to support a group of parishes we set up to discuss traffic issues which affect business and residents in this very busy part of Kent.

One of our most important aims is to report on local community issues and projects. Following the loss of Downs Mail, we are delighted to have reached an agreement with Anna and Jane at the local Oracle to carry this four page Malling Mail every other Trudy Dean, month.

All these groups and more joined together in October to write to the Prime Minister protesting about plans to remove environmental protections from our countryside, and remove planning protections to make building easier. Changes to remove the need for builders to provide ‘affordable housing’ have also been announced.

You might want to go to their websites and add your name to their joint campaign called ‘PEOPLES PLAN FOR NATURE’.

Three of these groups each have more members than all the UK political parties put together.

Leybourne and Larkfield Parish Councils are working together to reopen the circular path around Castle Lake. The lake lies behind the Brewers Fayre Castle Lake pub and Premier Inn. Leybourne PC are the new owners and plan to lay a path suitable for wheelchairs in time.

KCC 20mph schemes for East and West Malling are being discussed with local councillors and after amendment, will be published hopefully before Christmas.

The Government has approved new boundaries for the areas to be represented by Borough Councillors from the 2023 elections. Most Parishes will be grouped differently.

West Malling is still awaiting the Borough Council’s decision on whether the former Age Concern site on Norman Road should be retained for community use, or will get approval for housing.

Around 400 people came to East and West Malling Parish Council meetings in October to discuss plans for local house building until 2040. On a Sunday!

The public questions showed how angry people are about the rate at which our countryside is disappearing under mainly large expensive new houses, whilst our schools, GPs, hospitals and roads are already struggling to cope.

291 sites for housing have been submitted to the Borough Council by owners, house builders and others. They have been published in over 1,000 pages of maps. The Borough Council must now choose which of these sites to put into their Local Plan to meet the Government target of 15, 941 new houses by 2040.

One of the biggest sites in the Borough is on our doorstep at Broadwater Farm where 900 houses are proposed.

The main entrance joins the bypass opposite West Malling station.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? 1. You can reply to the 50 question report about broad principles of the plan. Go to ‘TMBC Local Plan Updates’, then ‘Consultation’ and ‘Local Plan’.

The Communigrow site in East Malling COMMUNIGROW ‘FOOD FEST’ PULLS IN THE CROWDS On a perfect autumn day, herbs, vegetables, honey, pumpkins, ice cream, plants, jams, pots, wooden craft ware and lots of cake were being snapped up at Communigrow’s latest ‘Food Fest’ Open Day. Next month, work will start digging a pond with KCC money from Cllr Trudy Dean.

Communigrow is a food education charity, teaching people of all ages and walks of life how to grow their own food and reconnect with nature. They offer practical experience in their fields on East Malling Research Station.
