NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2022
LocaL NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2022 2

It’s almost been three years since we started printing on a bimonthly basis. My pandemic pineapple will bloom next year. I’m so excited.

As this year winds to its close, it’s nice to know that we will be going back to our regular monthly issues again in 2023. That means more fantastic events, food, art, music and fun all coming to you on a regular basis and as always, absolutely free.

For now, we have a lot of celebrating to do. The holidays are here, and it’s our last issue of the year. So drink it up. There’s lots of shopping to do, events to go to, parades to attend, open houses to view and hot cocoa to drink, and of course, we’ve brought you the best of them all to check out this season.

This month we’re starting with a block of Rockstar womenowned businesses in a fun corner of the Jordan-Johnson neighborhood on Howard Avenue. You’ll discover fun finds, great shopping, fabulous hair, body art, visual art, plants and a whole lot of magic. Make sure to sit down with Cora King in her new art gallery. We know you’ll find it as special as we do.

This holiday season has plenty of open houses in and around Columbus, with everything from clothes, kids, jewelry, gifts, soaps, stationary, candles, art, sweet treats and more. You’ll find it all in this issue’s extensive calendar.

Paxx Shoes and Apparel brings us quite the inventory of fresh, bright, and beautiful hand-made pieces to fit any style. They not only look good on you, but also support families near and far.

Mamie Pound shares her take on the South Arts Exhibition going on at the Bo Bartlett Center now through December 10th. There’s so much to see and explore when it comes to museums, and this is certainly one we think you’ll enjoy.

It’s no secret we love local. “Shop Local!” is a cry heard during all seasons, and as holiday gifting approaches, the exclamations seem to get louder. But what does it really mean to “Shop Local?” And, probably the biggest question … WHY should I shop locally when I can get a product cheaper at a chain retailer?

Because shopping local cultivates relationships within the community. It’s a win – win for everyone involved. And it’s a lovely feeling to know you’re supporting your neighbors. When buying from people and businesses you trust, shopping becomes more meaningful, because you know the people behind the products.

Not only does buying local help your community – it’s also kinder to the planet. Very often, when you shop small, what you buy is unique. There’s something very special when you give a thoughtful gift that’s also one of a kind or has a story behind it.

We’ve covered so much for you in this issue, we’re positive you’ll find more ways than one to think local, shop small and really enjoy Columbus this holiday season. Look for new merch coming from your favorite LocaL magazine soon.

Thank you for reading,

Humane Society’s

Make A Wish Come True

It takes a lot of effort to be a pet owner – there’s no getting around it. But there is also nothing better than finding your new best friend, a family member and companion who will love you no matter what. It’s a wish come true, for you, but also for them.

As the year comes closer to an end and the holiday shopping begins, so many dogs and cats at Paws Humane Society will still be waiting for their wish to come true, too.

A belly rub or a scratch on the head. Tasty kibble and a warm bed. Love and, of course, a forever

joy living her best life in her new forever home.

This year, you helped us give more than 10,000 animals the care and love they deserve. You helped give them the time they needed to find a new

home. These are simple gifts, ones we gladly give to the animals we share our lives with. Everyone here at Paws Humane works hard to make sure all the animals in our care are doted on and adored during their time with us. At the end of the day, though, it’s all possible because of you.

Dumped on the streets to fend for herself, Gazelle was skin and bones when caring citizens found and rescued her. She was severely emaciated and covered in fleas. She could barely stand on her own. Thanks to your help, we gave Gazelle the emergency veterinary care and nutritious food she

family. And right now, so many others are still waiting for their chance to be loved.

Will you help us make their wish come true?

For an animal who has been abused, neglected, or abandoned—as so many of the dogs and cats here have—your friendship means everything. We know you will never give up – not on Gazelle, not on Alexa, not on any animal who needs you. And your kindness means we will never have to either.

It’s only because of special friends like you that Paws Humane is able to be there for dogs like Gazelle, who had no one else to help. It’s because of you we can provide emergency veterinary care like we did for Alexa, who was rescued from a horrible situation. And it’s because of you we can sustain our adoption program that has given thousands of animals the gift of loving homes.

The days get away from us so easily at this busy time of the year. It will be 2023 before we know it. If you’re interested in adopting a new forever pet from Paws Humane, please visit us at 4900 Milgen Road or online to pawshumane.org

Alexa was one of several kittens found under a parked car. All were freezing and near the point of death when they were rushed to Paws Humane, where they received the urgent care they desperately needed. Alexa needed additional care to have an abscess removed, but she is now a happy, playful bundle of

A

locally owned business brings South American style shoes and apparel that are just right for anyone this holiday season.

After spending several years in South America, his wife’s home continent, John Orr and his family returned to Columbus to settle down. Deeply impacted by his time in Chile and Peru, John felt drawn to the area’s culture and style, so he brought some remnants of the countries back with him.

“The culture is so different there,” John recalls. “The vibe is just so relaxed.”

During his time in South America, John and his family enjoyed spending time at local markets. At a market in Peru, John picked up a pair of shoes that intrigued him. Brightly colored in Peruvian tribal patterns, the shoes were “Like nothing I had seen before,” John says. Comfortable and durable, they ended up becoming John’s go-to pair of shoes for a year. “I walked all over the desert with them, wore them in warehouse work, and traveled all over the place in them,” John remembers. Little did he know that a pair of shoes he picked up at a market in Peru would change his life.

After returning to the states, John realized that he was going to have to find a creative way to provide for his family. “I knew I needed to open a door I’ve never opened

before,” John says. “One day, I looked down at my shoes and thought, ‘I need to bring these shoes to North America.’”

John spent some time working on the logistics of opening a shoe business, but he knew from the start he wanted to run his business with integrity from suppliers. After searching for the right manufacturer, John connected with a family in Peru, and everything came together as he launched his company, Paxx Shoes, in 2019.

John takes pride in the fact that he personally knows and works with the family that makes the shoes he sells. “Paxx shoes aren’t made by some faceless corporation that only cares about dollar signs,” John explains. “They’re made by a family in Peru that has been making footwear for generations. We’re the only North American company bringing these designs and colors in.”

Paxx shoes are made with a Peruvian pima cotton liner – incredibly soft inside, while durable and made

to last on the outside. One-of-a-kind designs feature the traditional bright colors and tribal patterns, and come in lace-ups and slip-ons. The shoes are casual, comfortable, and versatile. Men’s and women’s styles are available, in sizes 6-10 for men and 4-9 for women.

True to the origin of their inspiration, Paxx shoes are sold at markets in the area, as well as on their website,

paxxshoes.com. John will be at several upcoming events with a Paxx Shoes booth, and Paxx Shoes is hosting a market at Corta, the tennis court pavilion at Cooper Creek Park on November 19. The market will feature local vendors selling handmade goods and food, as well as a health and wellness program put on by Corta.

In addition, John will be at the Columbus Biz Pitch, a startup pitch competition with StartUP Columbus, November 16. The competition will take place in the Cunningham Center, and while his products won’t be available for purchase, they will be on display for anyone who wants to see them in person.

As John looks forward to the future for Paxx Shoes, he can’t help but feel proud of all he and his family have accomplished, thanks to a pair of shoes he came across in Peru that inspired him to think big.

Most of all, he hopes to inspire others to make purchases they can feel good about, and his business offers the community the chance to do just that. “I want people to feel good when they wear them and know they’re part of the close-knit Paxx Family,” John says.

Artistic Flair & Serious Girl Power

BRING LIFE TO THE SHOPS AT JORDAN JOHNSON

A cross from Jordan High School lies a small, unassuming corner of buildings, tucked away in an off-the-beaten-path neighborhood. For a long time, this little smatter of shops was forgotten and abandoned, frozen in time while other parts of the city saw new growth.

That’s changed now. New signs proudly advertise the arrival of a host of amazing new businesses. A waft of incense fills the air, and a buzz of excitement circles the street, drawing curious people in to browse and explore the new Shops. It’s all thanks to a group of women who are bringing their dreams to life and making this formerly forlorn corner a more magical, colorful place.

With the addition of each new shop, the block becomes even more intriguing, a display of the many creative and unique endeavors that are springing up from the community. Seasonal block parties hosted by the shop owners feature local vendors and draw a captive crowd as people connect over the contagious energy of new ideas.

As the holidays approach, the shops offer a space to find unique gifts while enjoying an afternoon meeting and supporting a group of women who envision big things for this city.

Plant Magic Market was the first shop to settle in on the corner of Howard Avenue. In the short

Olivia’s current project is the addition of The Tea Room, an expansion of Plant Magic Market where people can enjoy hot teas steeped from the herbs Olivia sells in her shop. Rumor has it that Olivia will occasionally offer her signature Golden Paste, the turmeric blend she used to sell at the market on Broadway. “It’s a fan favorite,” Olivia laughs. “It’s what started it all. I definitely don’t want to lose connection with the Golden Paste.” The Tea Room is set to open in early 2023.

time since its opening, the award-winning shop has already made a name for itself in the community, not a

surprising accomplishment given the alluring collection of items lining its shelves. “The magic is in the plants,” owner Olivia Hight-Montgomery explains. A wall of jars contains herbs and loose leaf tea blends, an ode to Olivia’s passion for herbalism, and a space where people can select herbs and teas to take home.

In the meantime, shoppers can find gifts of the metaphysical and spiritual variety at Plant Magic Market, including crystals, incense, herbs, and books, as well as self-care items such as bath bombs, jewelry, and essential oils.

Light & Co. opened their doors around the same time as Plant Magic. Owner Barbara Braswell dreamed

light, laughter and a lot of color to the neighborhood. “People share things with us,” she explains. “Great conversations happen inside these walls.”

Proof of their success, Light & Co. have been awarded both years they’ve been open by the People’s choice for Best Salon. “People love us because we love our people,” Barbara says. Offering color, cuts, blow outs, and styles for special occasions, Light & Co. has four stylists, each with their own specialties. “Any hair need you have, we can cover,” Barbara says.

Light & Co. offers gift cards year round as a unique and fun gift for those who enjoy happy hair.

I n January of this year, our little bee, Melissa Posey opened her new tattoo and henna shop called Little Bee Creations. It was a solid opportunity and she took it. “I

of people get tattoos.” She embraces the diversity she gets to experience at the shop.

Excited to be a part of a powerful group of women, Melissa says the other shop owners on the block have

funky but homey, colorful and fun, a place where all are welcome and celebrated. Barbara describes the salon as being “High on Girl Power,” and what you’d end up with “If Dolly Parton was a stoner hippie.” Big on promoting self-empowerment, Barbara is excited to have Light & Co. be a part of the revitalization that is happening in the Jordan Johnson neighborhood. “It’s been magical,” she says, appreciating the opportunity. The salon has brought

been great to work with. “We promote each other and support each other,” she says. “There has been a lot of community support for this little block.”

Melissa offers henna parties and has a room in her shop which can be rented out. She looks forward to having guest artists come visit, and hopes to host conventions

With a focus on the feminine side of tattooing, Melissa’s space feels inviting, welcoming, and homey, a place where anyone would feel comfortable. Her aesthetic is less intimidating than other traditional tattoo parlors and Melissa says she has all kinds of people come to her shop, including people who would not be comfortable going to a darker, more edgy shop. “I’ve had church ladies come in for their first tattoos,” Melissa recalls. “All kinds

where other artists can display their work.

For Melissa, her work speaks for itself, and has led to her reputation as a skilled local body artist. “People see my work out there and it makes them want to come in,” she says, adding that she’s grateful for the support.

Art in many diverse forms is a theme at the Jordan Johnson block, and local artist Cora King recently opened her studio King Gallery beside Plant Magic Market. The women behind The Shops celebrated the opening of King Gallery by throwing a block party, welcoming their new neighbor to the corner,

and celebrating the continued revitalization that is happening in the area.

One of a kind art pieces in Cora’s specialty expressionist style are available for purchase at King Gallery, a perfect gift idea for those who love unique art made right here in Columbus.

Human Hair From Two Sisters, Two Rattlesnake Tails

T he first thing that caught my eye was the 25 ft. pile of furniture—painted purple and orange and stacked into a mountain against a far corner of the gallery.

live in a time of global warming, with particular focus on Southern Louisiana. In her artist’s statement, Chalew says her work, “connects fossil fuel extraction and plastic production to their roots in white supremacy and capitalism that have fueled the exploitation of people and the landscape from the times of colonization and enslavement.” Her piece, Tremblante, 2021, is a 72”x 48”x 60” sculpture of metal, sugarcane, lime, plastic,

recycled paint, living plants, soil, paper made from sugarcane combined with shredded disposable plastic waste, (“plasticane”), iron oak gall ink and ink from shells. Chalew seeks to, “divest her studio practice from fossil fuels as much as possible,” by using, “recycled, free and sustainable materials.”

Gloria Gipson Suggs is the Mississippi Fellow. She was an educator for 20 years when she suffered an accident that severely limited her muscular function. In her statement, she says that she, “turned to art that she loved as a child.” Her style is primitive Impressionism. The media are crayon, pencils, markers, and pens on art paper and are inspired by the, “Civil War, Depression and Desegregation Eras, as passed down through folklore.” She attempts to reproduce the pigments made from plants, used by her ancestors. Her pieces are of a by-gone South. They’re illustrative of a divided land, but equally present in her work is a spirit of exultation, partly from the folkloric quality. But also, is easily lent by the media of bright crayon and primitive execution.

Alabama Fellow, Jenny Fine uses photography as

Tufted, wingback chairs, plastic answering machines, and keyboards interspersed with shadeless lamps and colored lights. The piece was installed by artist, Brittany M. Watkins. She’s the 2022 South Carolina Fellow, one of nine on display at the Bo Bartlett Center until December tenth. In her artist statement, Watkins says she, “examines contemporary society through a lens of psychoanalysis, by deconstructing everyday objects, actions and experiences.” Her results, “invite viewers to enter the artwork as if stepping into a painting.”

These fellows were chosen from over 800 entrants, one for each state; Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Louisiana Fellow, Hannah Chalew is the Southern Prize winner. Her work explores what it means to

element in her expansive installation. “Photographs as time, frozen,” according to her statement, “the camera is a device capable of shapeshifting memory—and the story—an apparition moving across time and space, resisting stillness and singularity.” Fine installed the piece herself, onsite. At the opening there was a performance within the installation that “collapsed the fourth wall.” It’s the largest piece in the show and feels like walking beneath the waves. Photographs and seashells are arranged to convey an ocean floor. The torso and legs of a gigantic mannequin are on one side and a billowing backdrop, moved by forced air creates the undulating sensation of water.

My most favorite is the work by Tennessee Fellow, Sarah Elizabeth Cornejo. According to her statement,

SOUTH ARTS EXHIBITION AT THE BO BARTLETT CENTER Source Unknown by Brittany Watkinsphoto by Frank Etheridge Sink/Swim by Jenny Fine Photo by Jordan Young Sarah Elizabeth Cornejo Womb, 2021 South Carolina Fellow Brittany M. Watkins Tree Shelter by Gloria Gipson Suggs

Cornejo seeks to explore the “possibilities of hybridity.” “A place where humans have evolved into hybrid beings with animals, insects, and discarded human-made materials.” She goes on to say, “The resulting physical evolution of this voluntary merging challenges social discomfort around bodies that are not easily categorized by blurring categories between animal and human, living

and dead.” Brood, 2021, is a piece made of “Human hair from two sisters, two rattlesnake tails, epoxy, clay, sawdust wood glue, aluminum, acrylic paint and alcohol ink.” It looks like a fat, rounded mink, with spikes of blonde hair and two rattlesnake tails protruding. Womb, 2021 looks like a big, sparkly geode. But it’s sculpted from epoxy, scrap fencing, saw dust and ants, among other things. It’s made to look like, “fruiting body of phallus indusiatus mushroom, (which may smell of rotting meat but some variations may be a female aphrodisiac that elicits spontaneous orgasms).” Her pieces seem almost gothic in their aesthetic, foreboding and forbidding.

Curator of the South Arts 2022 Southern Prize and State Fellows exhibition, Michaela Pilar Brown declares it “clear that Southern artists are continuing to record

and examine the lived experience of the south but are deeply engaged in global issues.”

This show is remarkable in its beauty, not only of the construction and application of the many southern and human themes and materials, but also in the struggle of these fellows, wresting their ideas and experiences to interpret and convey our global and human conditions through their artistry.

The South Arts 2022 Southern Prize and State Fellows exhibit is on display at the Bo Bartlett Center until December 10, 2022.u

COMES TO TOWN

When the pandemic was in full effect, many people were faced with the opportunity to make creative life changes and look at their lives from a new perspective.

Michael Woodham, a Columbus native, found himself in this very situation, a situation which led to the creation of his mobile bar service, TapWagen Columbus.

Experience in the service industry has given Michael an understanding of what it means to build connections. “I mastered the art of service,” he explains, and he isn’t exaggerating - in 2018, Michael won an award for “Favorite Server of Columbus.” Even though Michael thrives in the service industry, he dreamed of pursuing a new career while staying connected with serving people. “I’ve always wanted to do bigger things,” he says.

When Michael and his family got sick, he was out of work for ten days, and this gave him time to reevaluate his plans for the future. Though he had always worked hard, he had a new family to support, and decided it was time to build on an idea he had for a mobile bar service. With a small daughter who missed him when he was working

long restaurant hours, Michael wanted to start his own business and transition to more family friendly hours. He believed creating TapWagen Columbus would allow him the chance to do just that.

“I’ve always loved vintage things, from an era when things were simpler,” Michael says. A 1970 Volkswagen bus had caught his eye years earlier. When he saw it relisted, he told himself, “I’m not losing this again.” Michael decided to purchase the vehicle, realizing this was his chance to pivot.

Even though everything was closed down during Covid, Michael knew it was eventually going to come back full force. “I knew people would start having events again, and doing it bigger now because they appreciate it more,”

clients can choose between the two vehicles (or have both) for their events.

TapWagen Columbus opened in May of this year, offering “Something you can’t get anywhere else,” Michael says. “I’m not your bowtie bartender,” he laughs, “We do it with class and style, but in a relaxed environment.” TapWagen Columbus is all about chill vibes and good times. The mobile bar serves at events such as weddings, parties, private events, and corporate parties. Their drink possibilities are endless. Michael’s design of the tap system means that TapWagen can serve more than just beer. Custom cocktails, mocktails, lemonades, beer, coffee, and wine on tap are all available from TapWagen, and

Michael says. “I wanted to get in on that ride.” His idea for a mobile bar service and his newly purchased vintage Volkswagen bus went hand in hand. “I loved the vintage aspect, and the fact that it was easy to transport,” he says. Putting his idea into effect, Micheal decided to turn the VW bus into a mobile tap system that could be driven to any event.

“The Volkswagen needed work,” Michael remembers. He completely remodeled the bus, doing the entire buildout himself, and built the tap system from scratch. Two months later, he added a 1966 C10 panel truck to his collection, building out a tap system for it as well. Now

because the drinks can be mixed and matched, they’re fully customizable, meaning one-of-a-kind drinks can be created for special events.

“Being passionate about something makes it easy to sell,” Michael says. The thing he’s passionate about isn’t necessarily vintage vehicles or beverages, but community and connection.

Michael recently launched Fountain City Market Days, an opportunity for local vendors to show the community what they have to offer. “It’s all about bringing people together and supporting the creative community,” he says. “Community over competition.” Upcoming market days will be November 20 from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., December 21 from 2:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., and January 15

from 11:00 am. - 4:00 p.m. The market takes place at Heritage Art Center.

As TapWagen Columbus finds its place in the local community, Michael is grateful for the response of the community. “It’s been insane,” he says. A special appearance from the mayor himself, who cut the ribbon at TapWagen’s grand opening, and lots of support from local businesses have given TapWagen Columbus a great first year. For Michael, TapWagen Columbus has meant creating connections, a better work/life balance, and doing what he loves while enjoying life.

At the end of the day, connection is everything to Michael. “You have to connect with people,” he says. “You’ll never beat that one-on-one conversation.”

Owned by local artist Cora King, King Gallery showcases her unique pieces and offers a space

As she continued to immerse herself in the art world through meeting fellow creatives, Cora was encouraged in how expansive the art scene in Columbus was. “There’s so much talent here,” Cora says. Finding herself surrounded by other creative people, she was inspired to follow her vision and add her creative expression to the local art scene.

Cora’s work lines the walls as if they were always intended. The building seems happy, alive and ready to host its new purpose.

Blending light and color to convey mood and the movement of emotion, Cora uses Expressionism most often in her work, a genre

for the community to gather and spend time immersing themselves in her creations.

With a diverse background in music, event management and marketing, Cora went on to manage art studios as she learned to navigate the behind-the-scenes. Though opening a Gallery wasn’t initially Cora’s plan, the idea evolved slowly as she realized the potential, and eventually decided to take the leap and make the building a place to showcase not only her work but also the work of others.

“Through months of renovations it is now a place where art can be highlighted and celebrated,” Cora says. “I’m also excited to be a part of this

As for future plans, Cora looks

“Because showing art is such a vulnerable position to be in, expressionism, being the epitome of subjective perspective, gives me confidence in remembering that there is nothing right or wrong about art. It is a place of freedom. This is one of my mantras, and it really helps combat anxiety and catch myself from over thinking,” Cora explains. For her, it’s more than a genre –it’s a lifestyle. It challenges perfectionism and blends feelings. “Her work will stand out in the landscape of what’s already existing, because she’s so true to her aesthetic,” Cora’s friend and fellow artist Ben Redding says.

Finding a permanent place in the community, Cora’s art plays a vital role in the story of our city that will be told for years to come. “Art shapes the community by giving it vibrancy, youth, longevity, and life,” Cora says. “It’s magic, really.
