STUFF TO READ

Letter from the Publisher

Ihaven’t always lived in Columbus. Yes, I was born here and have spent most of my life here, but from age 3 to 15, I lived out west. I was already a teenager by the time I was truly introduced to Columbus, and one thing I know is that if you’re not from Columbus, and you happen to catch us on a Saturday afternoon, you might be surprised by the sirens.

There are actually quite a few things about life in Columbus that might startle, fascinate or even perplex the not-so established Columbusite. Please allow me to share with you a few things that we know are just, different, here in Columbus, Georgia.

The sirens. Let’s talk about ‘em. Our awesome neighbor is a big ol’ Army Base and since forever we’ve done siren drills to keep the citizens informed of what each different tone is trying to prepare us for. There are six total, three of them are played on Saturdays at noon, in order of: a tornado warning, a severe thunderstorm warning, and an “all clear” sound.

Drive thru speeding ticket process. Those who want to pay fines online can certainly do so. There are times and instances, however, where that may not be possible. So what if you don’t have internet and need to pay your speeding ticket? Just pull up to the courthouse window. Yes, Columbus has a ticket payment window that’s open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 702 10th Street. Funeral processions. Some other small towns around the country may do this, but Columbus is the only city I’ve ever witnessed where everyone pulls over during a funeral procession until all the cars have passed. It’s actually one of my favorite things about Columbus and I hope it never changes. If you are driving and happen upon one, please pull over to the side of the road.

Downtown/Uptown intersections. First, yes, it’s both. Secondly, one more driving tip for those who are new and driving in the downtown/uptown area. Those are regular intersections. You do not have to stop in the middle of them and wait for the light to turn green. Everyone will thank you for continuing through – safely, of course. Other than that, it’s June. It’s gonna be hot. Make sure you keep cool and take advantage of our amazing nightlife, lake life, river life, pool life and shade.

We’ve got an amazing issue prepared on the pages ahead and you’ll want to check it all out. It’s all local, and we’ve got some really amazing events coming up this month.

Do you know some fun Columbus quirks? Let us know if we missed any of your favorites, editor@thelocalcolumbus.com.

Beowolf

Although no one knows the circumstances surrounding Beowolf’s owner’s decision to tie him and his deceased sibling to a fence and leave them, we could only wish that they knew there were other options. Here at Paws Humane we have two outreach programs that could have been life-saving for this family.

Paws Humane’s Pets for Life program understands the importance and value of the human-animal bond. Therefore, all of their community outreach efforts reflect the goal of promoting animal welfare, preventing the overpopulation of pets, and improving the lives of not only animals but also the community as a whole. Paws Humane is proud to be mirroring the Pets for Life model, a program developed by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) that uses innovative outreach strategies to extend animal services, pet food, supplies, resources, and information to underserved communities.

Through Pets for Life, Paws Humane offers outreach services such as free or low-cost spay/ neuter surgeries, educational events that include pet care and training, and humane education. By comprehensively addressing the lack of accessible, affordable pet care in under-served communities, Pets for Life keeps pets in the homes they already have, improving their quality of life and elevating the human-animal bond.

Along with Pets for Life, they have implemented a program called Neighborhood Pet Support. Neighborhood Pet Support is a program that

Sketching Under the Skylight

In April, our local animal control found two pups tied to a fence behind a church. They had been without food, water, or shelter for so long that one of the two siblings had passed away weeks prior to being found. The puppy who survived was brought back to Columbus Animal Care and Control and quickly sought out a medical rescue. Emaciated, severely dehydrated, and clinging to life, the puppy found hope and refuge. Paws Humane performed an immediate medical evaluation and got him started on his long road to recovery.

Only knowing pain and suffering, he was still the sweetest most trusting puppy we have seen in his condition. Still wagging his tail and happily greeting all strangers, he was given the name Beowolf.

Through weeks of foster care, round-the-clock feedings, love, and patience, Beowolf was able to slowly gain weight and even began to thrive in his foster home. He absolutely loved being around the

Find Fun, Friends & Relief From The Summer Heat

The Chattahoochee River flows through downtown Columbus and offers many ways to enjoy nature, beat the heat, and find some relaxation. The whitewater section of the river boasts rapids of varying levels, from kayak pro to the newly-waterborne. But further downstream, the river eases into a gentle flow that meanders for miles past wooded streambank on one side and the Columbus Riverwalk on the other. This is the spot where paddleboards can be seen gliding quietly on the water or anchored in a cove, their riders sitting atop perfectly balanced in meditative poses or practicing their headstands. This is the spot where standup paddleboard yoga happens.

Stand up paddleboarding is an increasingly popular way to enjoy the water. Paddleboards are sturdy, provide

much everyone who comes out is a beginner, because SUP Yoga is such a unique activity,” Charlotte explains. “I’ve been teaching for almost nine summers now and have watched hundreds of students leave with a smile on their face because they realized they were able to do something they didn’t think was possible. It boosted their confidence, and that’s one of the main reasons I love to teach SUP. It’s an activity that may look scary, but once you get out there and try it, you realize it’s not as difficult as feared. And that mentality translates into so many facets of our lives.”

After teaching SUP Yoga at Whitewater Express for five years, Charlotte decided to open her own SUP business. Her custom designed inflatable boards were made by local craftsman Alex Cabral are unique and fun. SUP Y’ALL is currently headquartered in the Chattahoochee Paddle Company building (400 Brickyard Road, in Phenix City),

easy access to the water, and, believe it or not, are a great place to practice yoga.

In 2018, local yoga instructor Charlotte Gadilhe combined those two passions - yoga and standup paddleboarding - to create SUP Y’ALL. Charlotte has always loved the water and was excited to bring the activity to the community. “First time I got on a paddleboard was in Austin, TX,” Charlotte recalls. “I loved the feeling and freedom of standing on the water. A few years later I heard about SUP yoga and instantly jumped at the chance to

getting sunshine, playing in the water, strengthening your entire body, and relaxing deeply while floating on water. It forces you to really pay attention to your balance and slow down.”

Offering classes for people of all skill levels, SUP

Y’ALL takes students out on paddle boards to teach them the basics of using a paddleboard, to lead them on a paddle around the water, and to lead them in an all-levels yoga flow. “We teach beginner friendly classes because pretty

where participants are able to walk right down to the river, get on a paddle board, and go. Evening classes are often held at Lake Oliver due to the fluctuation of the water level and flow in the Chattahoochee River.

There are many benefits of practicing yoga on a paddleboard, a main one being the opportunity to explore balance and experience poses from a new perspective. The challenge of trying to stay on the board while holding a pose can exercise muscles that a regular yoga class might not. Practicing yoga while surrounded by nature can help reduce stress, and many groups find that enjoying a paddle class together is a fun alternative to the everyday activities in town.

A stand up paddleboard yoga class begins with a water safety meeting at the Chattahoochee Paddle Company or Lake Oliver Marina. Participants get outfitted with boards, paddles, anchors, and flotation devices. The class is

class so each student can choose what challenge they want to try,” Charlotte says.

The good news and a common SUP Y’ALL mantra is, “if you fall off, you can get back up.” Standup paddle boards offer a safe place to practice poses you might not want to try on land, like headstands. Summer heat tends to make the water look extremely inviting, and going for a swim can definitely be part of a stand up paddleboard yoga class. “Be prepared to get wet,” Charlotte says, “It’s part of the experience, and it’s all for fun!”

A stand up paddleboard yoga class feels like a retreat in your hometown. Without having to drive very far, you can have an immersive experience surrounded by water, fresh air, wildlife, and sunshine. Classes encourage students to go with the flow and explore what it’s like to try something new.

In addition to yoga on paddleboards, SUP Y’ALL

After a relaxing initial paddle, the class drops anchors in a calm cove, their boards floating in place while they are led in a one hour yoga session complete with meditation and breathwork. The instructor leads the class through a yoga flow incorporating poses that gently stretch muscles, encourage balance, and challenge participants to try something new.

These excursions consist mostly of paddling stretches of the Chattahoochee River or Lake Oliver, enjoying the sunset on the water while encountering occasional wildlife and exploring Columbus in a new way. A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY OF LIFE IN THE CITY

We walk past the scenes every day. The Iconic skylines, the untamed Chattahoochee River, the familiar restaurants and historic buildings that form the silhouette of the city where we work, live, raise our families, and play.

Yet many of us take these scenes for granted or, after a time, stop noticing the beautiful way the light reflects off the water, no longer paying attention to the colors and shapes that each familiar scene is built around and

the memories the river stirs up for him, and a feeling of being home whenever he visits its banks.

Growing up, Jake always had a camera in hand. His passion for photography grew when he got his first “nice camera,” a DSLR, at the age of 19 and discovered the kind of quality images he could take with it. “That’s when I fell in love with photography,” Jake recalls, “It was like a new world to me.” It’s no surprise that as Jake’s interest in photography grew, one of his favorite places to take photographs became the river he grew up on.

Along with photography, Jake found his niche in graphic design and applied himself to web design as well.

iconic Columbus scenes he had been taking. People like to see representations of the city they grew up in, or a place they visited with friends where fond memories were made. Jake’s graphics make our city recognizable all over the world, and freeze time in space to memorialize the city we love, abuzz with the energy of today’s activities.

“You take pictures of what you have access to,” Jake explains. Which may sound easy, but the way Jake sees the world, one could easily miss. His images strike every descriptive word you can think of: captivating, evocative, vivid and serene. The places Jake was already familiar with have become natural subjects of admiration

made of. While we may pass by without stopping to admire these scenes of the city, local creator Jake Rhodes travels with his camera in tow, capturing the essence of Columbus, Ga, life, his eyes and lens awakened to the breathtaking beauty of another day in the city.

Born and raised in Columbus, Jake grew up playing around and in the Chattahoochee River. His fascination with the water is rooted in the time he spent near it,

Jake spent some time studying website design at Columbus Tech and soon realized that graphics and photographs were needed to create websites. As his different creative paths began to merge, he found that graphic design, web design, and photography all went hand in hand and were an essential part of his digital creations. Fascinated with the world of computer technology, Jake integrated these creative modalities easily into his toolbox of digital skills. “I learned how to create all of it on my own,” Jake says. When Jake’s full time job in landscaping ended, he decided to put all of his attention into creating. “I just decided to do all of the things I’ve always wanted to do,” Jake says.

As Jake dived deeper into graphic design and photography, he found success with the local images of

and nostalgia for him - downtown, the river, historic Columbus, and the Riverwalk. “That was my natural area to gravitate towards for interesting pictures.” In 2016, Jake took a photo of Columbus from Waveshaper Island which became his most successful graphic.

LocaL JUNE 2023 10
Jake Rhodes Good Night Columbus Sunset Over Water Tower

Today his graphics can be found on apparel and local keepsakes. As he has carved out his place in the local creative scene, he’s become known for his striking images of Columbus landscapes and river views. Jake occasionally uses a drone to capture a bird’s eye view off the city at work, play, and rest.

Columbus in the setting sun, colors reflecting off the glass of well-known buildings, the city aglow in neon lights, quiet restaurants that are local favorites and the wonderful energy of events - these scenes are often caught in pause by Jake, a fleeting moment and a snapshot of our current era, memorialized in a photograph.

Jake’s images have found their way onto apparel and the print-on-demand industry, and he sells many of his own material online. He also sells the graphics he’s created to designers.

In addition to graphic design, web design, and photography, Jake writes and publishes music. He got his first guitar at the tender age of just eight years old and has enjoyed creating music ever since. Today, he enjoys creating pop and rap music under the artist name Down 2 Earth, which can be found on Sound Cloud. Jake personally writes and composes all of the music.

Jake is also a talented writer, and has published many specialty e-books. “My brother got really into clean eating, and then I did too,” Jake explains. As a result, Jake began making smoothies regularly and has become an expert on them, publishing a whole array of books about making smoothies which can be found on Amazon’s kindle.

As for the future, Jake plans to continue developing and growing. He says the community’s response to his work has been positive, and he’s excited about the direction the city is growing in. “New development means new photography material,” Jake muses.

And though he’s seen the scenes before, Jake returns to his favorite spots over and over again. “The same spot can look different every day,” Jake explains. There are so many variables at play in photography - lighting, weather, the season, the day - and Jake appreciates the endless potential even when photographing familiar scenes.

Jake’s work can be viewed on his website jakerhodes. net and on his social media pages you can find him @ jakecjrhodes1001. u

BRINGS THE BLING TO UPTOWN

Eloquence Fashion Café (EFC) is Columbus’s newest sanctuary for anyone seeking a peaceful spot to relax, study, and shop. Located in Uptown and convenient to Columbus State University’s downtown campus, EFC was founded by Natasha Johnson, a 23-year U.S. Army veteran and the “Queen of Bling”

herself. This café is designed to cater to the diverse needs of its patrons, offering everything from a coffee and snack bar to affordable shopping and printing services.

After her retirement, Natasha longed for the opportunity to express herself through fashion and create a space that would foster a sense of community. This desire led to the creation of EFC, a unique establishment that combines style, elegance, some java time, and a lot of fellowship in a comfortable and welcoming environment.

Eloquence aims to provide a one-stop-shop experience for its customers, which is why it offers a distinctive combination of products and services. “I love when people come in and are

For those seeking retail therapy, EFC offers locally crafted jewelry, candles, and natural soaps, as well as clothing and accessories.

Eloquence is also an intentional space for self-care and community building, because Natasha’s commitment to the community extends beyond her typical schedule. The café hosts veterans appreciation events, giving former servicemen and servicewomen the chance to reconnect and re-engage. Most recently, EFC hosted a “Leaping into Literacy” mixer, which

Garrett Lee

THE ART OF STORYTELLING

It is clear, almost from the first syllable spoken, that Garret Lee is a storyteller. He communicates with such clarity and self-awareness, and a deep sense of serenity and humility seems to radiate from him.

favorite things is to connect with people through music and words. Another one of my favorite things in the world is to gift someone a song that was inspired by them or their story.”

“My best songs, I hear in my head as if it’s already an existing song. It comes real fast, in a night. It’s almost an out of body experience, as crazy as that sounds. I think most artists would describe that zone, that mode, where they literally can’t see anything around them but the things they’re focused on. Those are some of my favorite times, when you just look up and you’ve written something.”

This phenomenon, so familiar yet so otherworldly, is one Lee believes to be of divine inspiration. “I’m of Christian faith, and

and it means everything to me.”

Lee is, to his core, an artist, not to be defined by one medium or form of expression. “A big part of my life in the last little over a decade has been my service at the Fort Church,” he explains. “I served for 11 and a half years as the music minister. I led the worship band and did everything else too, whether it be graphic arts or video or photos or working on the website.”

His evolution as a photographer and videographer started at age 16. “I remember asking for a nice camera when I graduated from high school. I joined the church staff when I was 21, and the video needs came up, so I started learning about video on my own. I’ve honed all those skills for 11 and a half years, and last November is when I stepped down vocationally from the church to start my own business.”

Lee infuses his art - whether it be music, photography, or videography - with these qualities. He describes his artistic career as a journey. “I started out playing music at age 11,” he says. “I immediately picked up a guitar and fell in love with it. I took lessons for a couple of years and then started learning everything on my own. I started songwriting around 13 or 14, and realized that’s what I [wanted] to do for the rest of my life.”

Having started his musical career in the contemporary Christian

have personal relationships with God. I believe it is all a gift - of melody and inspiration. The most powerful way we communicate is through story, and I think it’s one of the greatest gifts we can have as a human race.”

“I think music is the most valuable medicine we have,” he continues. “In our good times and our horrible times - the deepest of lows - it just soothes our soul to write about it and sing about it, and to continue sharing those songs down the road. Even when you’re not in that season any more, you can connect with someone who may be going through something similar.”

It is this exchange - of ideas and emotion and inspirationthat makes Lee’s art so powerful. “The countless times I’ve had conversations with people after a show or those precious moments when I’ve gifted songs to loved ones - you can’t bottle that up. It’s so magical. ‘The Man That I Am’ is a song I wrote for my stepfather,

Lee Sight & Sound Co. - the fruit of his artistic labors - has given him the opportunity to explore many types of photography and videography. “Mainly I love portrait work and commercial work - I like working one on one with someone the best,” he says. “That can be all types of portraits - family, artists, album covers, real estate stuff. My favorite thing to do as far as video is music videos. I love telling stories through video too, one of my main services being video strategy for small businesses. I just completed a documentary celebrating 15 years of Voices of the Valley, and I love shooting guitar demos for Silvan Guitars when Frank makes a new creation.”

arena, Lee opened for acts including Big Daddy Weave, Tenth Ave. North, and more. Over time, “I started to have more opportunities to cross over and find myself more as a songwriter,” he explains. “I started writing more in the Americana, soft country rock genre, which at the end of the day is just storytelling.”

Lee wasted no time from those first sparks of teenaged inspiration.

“I released my first CD at age 15, which I like to keep well hidden,” he laughs. “I’ve released projects every few years since then, and I’ve had pretty incredible opportunities and met some pretty cool people. I’d say music is my first love.”

Having opened up for renowned artists including Dave Barnes, Emmy Lou Harris, and Rayland Baxter, he nevertheless says, “I don’t do it for recognition or to prove myself, I do it because I have to. I do it to be happy.”

Lee sees music as a gift, both given and received. “One of my
