In our regular local community feature on the Acres Way Kennels, based in Castle Point, the dogs we featured last time, Dexter the Doberman and Coco the cross have both been re-homed successfully! This month we are featuring 2 new dogs, Cleo the Lurcher and Max the Staffy in the hope that we can find more loving homes (pages 12).

In our other Community features this month we feature the Benfleet Horticultural Society, which has 600 members and provides a meeting place for gardeners to get together (page 28) and in our article on the History of Castle Point we feature The Village Pump on Canvey Island (page 26). We also have a feature on the Islands Girls Soccer School, a Soccer School for girls from the age of 4 upwards (page 22). The Island Girls Football Club aims to offer girls an opportunity to play an exciting sport in a friendly environment.

f you think you can offer a dog a good home, the first thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on.

Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee.

SAs , Pensions, Unit Trusts, ‘OEICS’, Bonds………… The world of investments can be very confusing, and even intimidating. Each ‘vehicle’ has it’s own taxation rules, which may be more or less beneficial to you dependent on your own circumstances.

It is vital that you seek advice to make sure that your savings and investments are in the most tax efficient vehicles for you, and equally important to ensure that the investments within each vehicle are suitable.

An ISA for example can be a ‘cash’ ISA which simply puts your money on deposit, or a ‘stocks and shares’ ISA. The term ‘stocks and shares’ ISA is misleading, as there are many investments that you can place in one these that are not stocks and shares such as Property funds, Government and Corporate Bond funds, Overseas bonds funds and Commodity funds. You can, with advice, build a balanced portfolio of investments inside a Stocks and Shares ISA, or indeed a personal pension.

Whist it feels sensible to take little or no risk with the underlying investments, it is very important to understand how the world is changing and that taking little ‘risk’ with your savings could end up costing you dearly. At Joseph Lamb’s we believe that inflation will continue to increase, and don’t forget that the governments new ‘CPI’ inflation measure misleads. Have you filled your car up or a shopping trolley lately? We are all experiencing inflation running much higher than the official figure. In the meantime interest rates are now almost certain to remain at or around these alltime lows for years to come as the Government has to keep borrowing costs down, or we are all doomed!

So whilst it may appear that leaving money in 18

‘safe havens’ such as cash or Government Bonds is the right thing to do, inflation will almost certainly erode it’s value very significantly. We have lost track of how many clients we have who retired ten or more years ago and are now feeling the pinch.

If you want your money to deliver an income, then inflation is an even bigger problem as if you spend your interest the remaining capital balance becomes worth less and less very quickly.

Only by investing some of your money in ‘real assets’ do you stand any chance of beating inflation going forwards. It may appear that ‘Investments’ are not delivering, but that is simply not the case, the returns since 2004 in our Medium risk portfolios are up to 8.13% pa, including the impact of the 2008 crisis, and have been performing more strongly than that recently. The world is changing, and still growing, but the relative importance of ‘The West’ is declining and any investment portfolio should reflect this. You can only invest in this growth by using a diverse portfolio not by leaving your money on deposit or in Cash ISAs, which can be transferred to Stocks and Shares ISAs. Inflation doesn’t stop when you retire! It must be allowed for in your retirement planning and you must look further down the road than age 65. Many of us will live longer in retirement than we earned a good living for……….this means we will all need more savings behind us than we imagine. Start now, tomorrow will be too late!

And seek proper advice from acknowledge advisers with a long term track record!

Island Girls Soccer School I

sland Girls Soccer School, Canvey Island is a Soccer School for girls from the age of 4 upwards. It is now entering it’s 3rd season and are pleased to offer girls from school years Reception to Year 5 a unique opportuntiy to come and play football. So far, their success has seen the emergence of a new Island Girls Under 9s and Under 10s team giving the opportunity to learn new skills, make new friends, compete in FA development competitions across Essex and - most importantly - have fun!

Island Girls is part of The Island Boys & Girls Football Club. The club’s aim is to continue to offer boys, girls, men and women an opportunity to play sport in a friendly and inviting club, based at Smallgains Hall, Island Boys Pavilion, Creek Road, Canvey Island, SS8 8QP.

Island Girls Soccer School meets for training every Saturday between 2pm and 3.30pm at Smallgains Playing Field, Canvey Island. The cost is just £3 per child and all coaches are Fa Certified, CRB checked and First Aid Trained.

History of Castle Point

The Village Pump - Canvey Island T

he well that was located on the corner of Haven and Long Road was sunk in 1889 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Up until the well was built, the only water supply available to local residents was rainwater collected in water butts or buckets of water bought from one of the local farmers who had small wells.

The cost of providing the well was largely met by voluntary public subscription, aided by a grant from the Corporation of the City of London. The iron pump was sheltered by a thatched roof and a painted wooden board around the eaves said:

“Whosever drinketh of this water that I give shall never thirst.”

There was also a large horse and cattle trough placed nearby. A plaque was placed above the well that read:

“This well provided for the use of the inhabitants of Canvey Island by public subscription and a contribution from the Corporation of the City of London was opened by the Chairman of the Sanitary Committee on December 5 1889 and is vested in the undersigned as a permanent committee” The Reverend henry Hayes who had been Canvey’s Curate-in-Charge since 1872 had worked tirelessly in ensuring that his parishioners had access to the amenities that he believed were essential to both their spiritual and medical welfare. He was instrumental in arranging for the supply of fresh water to the village via the well. Also during his time, the Island received a new church and its first school.

The well was officially opened on 5th December 1889 and a crowd gathered for the opening ceremony. As there were still only several hundred people living on the Island at the time, the well quickly became the focal point of the village where people would meet up regularly to discuss the latest news and events.

The pump was used for the next thirty-three years before being finally pulled down in 1938. In 1913 the Southend Water Company became responsible for supplying water to Canvey Island but it was not until 1922, when Canvey was finally connected to the mains water.

Benfleet Horticultural Society B

enfleet Horticultural Society currently has 600 members and provides a meeting place for likeminded gardeners to discuss any problems they may have and hopefully find the answers.The society was formed in 1920 and is served by an active committee who manage the running of a store, organize three flower shows a year, organise club and quiz nights, produce a year book and newsletters and arrange one or two coach trips a year.

The store at Cemetery Corner, Benfleet provides the finance to run the society and is staffed by volunteers with a wealth of gardening experience. Prices are kept to an absolute minimum wherever possible.
