ew farm-to-table restaurant, Barn Door 49, welcomes patrons back to the same location they loved for 18 years as Milk & Sugar Café. Barn Door owners, Gina and Lenny Jaworowski, wanted a fresh start after closing their beloved Milk & Sugar. It was time to reinvent and recreate. That they did. The address may be the same, but the change is dramatic. Anchored in good food, clean eating, and love, Barn Door is a rustic, farmhouse-chic family-friendly restaurant whose comfort food menu is inspired by farmers, fisherman, and artisan food producers. Like any good farm-to-table restaurant, the menu is seasonal and the ingredients are locally sourced. Upon entering, messages of gratitude, revival, family and community are immediately tangible. The vibe is comfortable, warm, and

welcoming. As Gina Jaworowski put it, “This is a thank you to the community.” Since 1999, the Jaworoski’s have been telling their story through the various businesses they have opened: Milk & Cookies, Patty Cake, Big Bubba’s BBQ, Pixie Dust, The Victorian Room, and Milk & Sugar Café. When telling the story of Barn Door 49, Gina circles back to a constant theme of gratitude and appreciation. She feels blessed to have such strong support from her loyal patrons. “People took a leap of faith with me with all six stores that I opened. They’re jumping into my imagination with each store. I want to say ‘thank you’ to the community for living this journey with me… it’s been a magical ride.” That, by itself, inspires her, but she does not accept full credit. “I couldn’t do this without my husband, my family, bartenders, and

my dynamic chefs. You can’t do this without the right people behind the door.” Warm and cozy, Barn Door 49‘s farmhouse décor is on point. Lots of reclaimed wood for both tables and walls, Edison bulbs over the bar, chalkboard walls, and a fireplace brilliantly placed the middle of the dining room. The menu is full of thoughtful dishes all locally sourced: Shrimp Dumplings with crispy bacon and burnt scallion; Grassfeed Burgers with shallot-shiitake marmalade and pomme frites; sides like Roasted Wild Mushrooms and Crispy Brussel Sprouts; fresh, innovative salads like Baby Kale & Quinoa with dried cranberries, pecans, and ricotta salda served with a whole grain mustard vinaigrette. When discussing future dishes, Gina perks up, “May is going to be all the yellow fruits, and the farm-fresh vegetables. I can’t wait for yellow watermelon!” Desserts are outstanding, with nods to Milk & Sugar. “From Milk & Sugar’s thirty-six selections, I chose only four, our family favorites: Flourless Chocolate Cake, Apple Crumb Crisp, Mason Cherry Cheesecake, and Farm Fresh Carrot Cake. That was my wedding cake, and that closed the menu for me, because that’s how we started.”

A special heartfelt message to Karen Marvin of South Shore Paddleboards. So many of us know Karen as a passionate, inspiring, and loving lady, who has an infectious smile and a heart as big as the Great South Bay and beyond. For those who do not know, a strip of store fronts, which included Karen’s business as well as Dr. Brian Yodice’s Sports Medicine and Chiropractic office, were destroyed by a fire. Fortunately, no one was injured, but nonetheless, the stores suffered severe damage. Our wonderful communities are filled with caring people who I know will lift them up and support them through this difficult time.

TABLESCAPES Fresh seasonal flowers add pops of color along with printed linens and runners. For a fancier centerpiece, get creative and make a fresh flower table runner using beautiful blooms, branches, and greenery. Added accents, like seashells or color patterns, can define a specific theme. Mix and match plates…pair traditional pottery with vintage plates for a fresh, timeless look. Gingham is the unofficial pattern of summer, adding a dose of color and playfulness to any table. Need multiple table cloths that won’t cost a fortune? Try using butcher paper. A butcher paper table runner scattered with greens displaying glass jars filled with water and floating blossoms paired with mismatched vintage chairs make for an informal yet elegant design, without breaking the bank. COZY IT UP Keep guests comfy and warm with outdoor pillows and throws. Drape throws over chairs, or roll up and display in a large wicker basket. A warm, glowing fire pit always draws a crowd. LIGHT THE SCENE Light up your yard with style. Candlelit lanterns set the mood and create instant drama. Scatter them around the grounds, or nestle them into

a garland runner on your table. Use tall tapers on the table, and tea lights to accent seating areas for a romantic look. String party lights, or use fishing wire to hang mason jars containing lit votives from the trees for nighttime ambiance. MUSIC, MAESTRO! Create a playlist your guests will love that sets the mood for your party. We have Sonos portable speakers and love them! They have fantastic sound and can be controlled inside. DRINK STATION Arrange drinks and glasses together for a self-serve bar. Forgo the ice cooler, galvanized buckets are a great alternative. For a farmhouse touch, line a wheel barrel with aluminum foil, fill with beverages, then cover with ice. Add style to drinks by freezing pieces of fruit or edible flowers in your ice cubes.

Brandy Milk Punch By Galatoire’s Restaurants

A classic New Orleans cocktail is a perfect specialty drink to serve at your party. INGREDIENTS

2 oz. Premium Brandy 5 oz. Whole Milk ½ tsp. Vanilla Extract 1 tsp. Simple Syrup Ice 1 dash nutmeg Pour the brandy, milk, vanilla and simple syrup into cocktail shaker. Fill a highball glass to almost full with ice cubes and transfer ice to the shaker. Shake well and pour the drink into the highball glass. Dust the top of the drink with nutmeg. Enjoy!

MUST KNOW

American motherhood has undergone significant evolution over the past few decades. Years ago, the vast majority of married women were stay-at-home moms. No questions asked. Generations later, whether from career ambition or the need for “dual-income status”, many stay-at-homers find themselves at the crossroads of “should I stay or should I go?” The decision is neither right nor wrong; if you have the option to choose, that is something to celebrate.

DIANE URSO,

THE LIST: What do you enjoy most about your work?

Regional Coordinator for the NYS Mentoring Program, Spin Instructor at Cycle Evolution in Islip, Wife and Mother

DIANE: My job is incredible for so many reasons! I work closely with Mrs. Cuomo, and she has become my mentor and role model for work/life balance. I work with students of all ages throughout Long Island creating mentor programs that will help change lives. I also partner with businesses, civic organizations, and local officials to bridge communities with schools. It’s honestly everything I am passionate about rolled into one amazing position. I am blessed!

Matilda Cuomo (L) & Diane Urso (R)

As a wife and mother of two boys, I was a stay-at-home mom for 12 years, fully immersed in my children’s academics as perennial class mom and PTA president. Going back to work was both a necessity and desire for me. It was time. Despite being mentally ready, I was scared to death. Leaving for my first day, a thousand thoughts sprinted around in my head: What if my kids need me? Dinner, laundry, homework… how will I get it all done? What should I pack for lunch? WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?? After a week, it was like I had done it forever. Like most big changes, the hardest part was the first steps.” THE LIST: Can you please tell us a little about your work? DIANE: I am the Regional Coordinator for the NYS Mentoring Program. The program is an initiative of Governor Cuomo, and is chaired pro bono by founder Matilda Raffa Cuomo. THE LIST: What inspired you to do this type of work? DIANE: Many moons ago, I went to graduate school to become a social worker. I have always been drawn to helping others and working with the disenfranchised. I especially enjoy working with and helping young people find their potential.

8 | THE LIST MAGAZINE

THE LIST: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? DIANE: What’s spare time? Lol… My absolute favorite thing to do is teach my cycling classes at Cycle Evolution in East Islip. I love teaching, creating mixes, and sweating like a maniac. When I’m not exercising, the yin to this yang is cooking. I am passionate about cooking and eating delicious food. It’s all about balance. THE LIST: Any advice you can offer to other women who are contemplating returning to the work field? DIANE: We females overthink ourselves into a corner. It is totally okay to be scared to death over a major life change. Have faith and take the plunge. At worst, you don’t like it. Try something else. At best, you find something that makes you happy. THE LIST: Where do you want to be in 10 years? DIANE: Wow… this is such a tough question now that I am getting older. I hope to be in the same job building highquality mentor programs that lift up and support our young people. I hope my body is still able to cycle! Mostly, I hope the future holds much health and happiness for my family and friends.

It’s vital to realize that just because you find yourself at the end of a chapter, it doesn’t mean your book is finished.

MAGGIE GRELLO COHEN, BRIGHTWATERS

Home chef, cooking instructor, caretaker, guest bar tender, singer/ whistler, mood elevator, laugh maker, people connector.

Two years into my retirement, I pursue my passions with the full measure of my energy like a woman on fire… enjoying every moment of this precious time. I am the second of six children of Dr. Fred Grello, who holds a special place in the hearts of many people who live locally. After growing up in Brightwaters, then owning my own home and raising a family in the Bay Shore/Brightwaters community, teaching 34 years at Bay Shore High School, and finally moving back into to my family home to enter into a multi-generational living arrangement, I feel TIED to the community. Every night I have a party of six to cook for: my parents, two of my own children, and my husband and I. My parents raised me and my siblings in this house, then my husband and I moved back in with them and brought up our children here. We are a multi-generational family living under one roof. Growing up Italian in our bustling home, food played a central role in our daily existence and never-ending stream of family gatherings and celebrations. I learned to cook by watching my mother and maternal grandmother, who owned and operated a restaurant in Amityville for many years. When my parents entertained their friends, I waitressed and inevitably wound up playing the piano at my dad’s insistence (the music of Jesus Christ Superstar more often than not). When my mom suffered a debilitating illness, I assumed the full-time cooking duties for the family. After retiring, I decided to draw on my passions: creating healthy, easy-to-prepare meals, educating, and entertaining. Over the years, family members frequently asked for recipes that defined our childhood Sunday dinners at my grandparents’

house. I felt compelled to save these family “heirlooms” from the ravages of time in the most obvious way possible - by writing a cookbook. I began entering recipes in a blank cookbook that was gifted to me by my youngest son. Returning to my roots as an educator, I decided to throw cooking parties… with a twist. Attendees would learn to prepare my collected recipes and enjoy the pleasures of an old-school family dinner in the comfort of our traditional dining room in my family home. It all started during my teaching career. I would invite friends and co-workers over to show them how to prepare basic fundamental dishes, as well as some pretty fantastic meals. The dinner parties would take place at my home, where we would prepare and cook the meal together, then sit down for a lovely dinner. My parents enjoyed having people over, so I started inviting people back again to make them happy. We’re Italian…what is there to look forward to if there is not a meal? I invite people over about once a month now. My father was the local pediatrician in our community for decades, people around here love to go to Dr. Grello’s home for a dinner party. I’ve had a pasta fagioli party, meatball madness… all kinds of things. I have also been guest bartending local events around my home town for the past 4 years, as well as cooking and entertaining at private parties. At 57, I realize I have just begun to fan my inner flame. For recipes follow Maggie's Kitchen on Facebook @maggiegrellocohen. A print collection of her recipes will be available soon.

CARLY & LEXIE RACANELLI, BRIGHTWATERS Designers of Forever Young Bracelets

F R O M T H E E D I TO R . . .

Be True to You

Two sisters, Carly and Lexie Racanelli, were inspired to start Forever Young Bracelets as a way to honor their brother, Michael. Carly says, “We began making theses one-of-a kind bracelets because it reminded us of the joys of childhood, as well as the peace and light our brother brought into our lives”. “Our goal is to donate 10% of the profits to the Michael Racanelli ‘Forever Young’ Foundation, with a mission to help young people in the many communities he was blessed to be a part of ” said Carly. Their company's motto, "Stay... Forever Young," reminds us to live simply, be free, and celebrate each and every day. The mission of the Michael Racanelli ‘Forever Young’ Foundation is to inspire love and peace. Each year, many young people are effected and helped through the foundation.

What Carly and Lexie didn’t expect was the overwhelming response to their bracelets. "Success is different for everybody,” said Carly, “But for me, I realized the business had become ‘a success’ when it was affecting people in positive ways. There have been so many amazing people who have bought bracelets to impact the lives of others in order to give them hope in times of need. When I receive orders or messages from people that are truly impacted by our bracelets and business, that tells me I have made a difference. That is success to me.” Forever Young Bracelets and necklaces can be purchased online at foreveryoung.com and are available locally at Pandemonium Boutique, Ooh La La, Nalu, Debra Canavan Classics, and Bunger Surf Shop.

Women are complex, multi-dimensional creatures. Over the course of a lifetime, one can journey from daughter to great grandmother and experience many different roles and titles along the way. By the grace of Mother Nature, women tend to be the caretakers, honing in on the needs of others, be it family members, co-workers, or friends. In the thick of raising a young family, or nurturing a budding career, we may find ourselves at the bottom of the list, barely keeping a nose above water to take a breath and stay afloat. Even if the tide continues to rise, and despite feeling your former “self” has become lost at sea, it is imperative to keep a grip on that gal and hold tight to her. Maintaining friendships, interests, and your own voice is absolutely necessary to keep your ship from sinking. It’s a win-win: you catch some joy and your “people” will love you more for being true to yourself.

Whether you are at a time in your life where you are barely treading water, or fully navigating your ship by what your heart desires most, take advantage of every opportunity to indulge your passions and feed your interests. The time will come when your nest is empty or the retirement party you are attending is your own. It should be a celebration of liberation and the first page of your new chapter. racine salon spa 341 main street islip 631-244-5240

My goal has always been to provide treatments that result in a softer, natural look from products that have a proven track record. There are many options available to gently reverse the signs of aging. Fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of volume and collagen in your skin may be inevitable and unavoidable, but it is correctable! Injectable services include a wide variety of products that increase volume and reduce fine lines. I’ve become a fan of the most natural options in regard to the results and the actual product used. The category of neuromodulators has broadened, but with many of my clients wanting to live more naturally, I often recommend Xeomin. Xeomin is used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between and around the eyebrows. Injected into the muscles, Xeomin is highly purified, FDA approved, and

clinically proven to temporarily smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Xeomin is unique in its precision manufacturing process, which isolates the therapeutic component of the molecule and removes the unnecessary proteins that don’t play a role in the treatment. I’ve found this to be a more natural solution for my clients. Not to say that Botox and Dysport aren’t excellent options, but Xeomin is just manufactured differently. There is a place for all of these neuromodulators in my practice, but I like to offer this new choice as well. Combined with fillers in the cheeks, or around the mouth, Xeomin gives a softer, younger look. Richard Byrnes, MD is the Medical Director at Drew Patrick Spa where he administers Xeomin as well as a wide variety of other injectable services. In addition, he oversees the entire staff on other Medical Spa treatments, but is the only one who administers the injectables.

RAGING GRACEFULLY

Grandma 2.0 BY ANNE NILAND

Two nine-year-old girls watch a music video on an iPod that has seen better days. Hearing her favorite jam, Grandma bursts into the room and attempts a Moon Walk which she’s been trying to master since the 80’s. Houston we have a problem, the girls don’t even lift their heads. “Hey girls, watch me whip, now watch me nae nae!” The plastic cap on grandma’s head falls off and Medusa’s tresses are unleashed. One of the girls giggles, the other who has witnessed this scene before groans. So Grandma dials it down as not to embarrass her granddaughter, and she remembers the stern warning from the other adults in the family….Do. Not. Twerk. Ever! She places the plastic cap back on her head and turns to leave the room. Time to rinse. Fifty shades of gray are gone, but promise to return in 4 weeks. She stifles a giggle at what she hears as she hangs out by the door. “My Grandma does Zumba… does yours?” “Nope, she does CrossFit.” Mic drop. Welcome to Grandma 2.0: The Sequel. It’s an action-packed drama with an outstanding ensemble. Baby boomer super heroes with grandkids on their hips slay dragons with retinol-dipped swords. The setting has changed; many scenes take place out of the kitchen, which doesn’t always smell like chocolate chip cookies, pot roast, or chicken soup. But, because Grandma still has the need to feed, she will never deny her grandkids takeout

SPRING/SUMMER FASHIONS

or a trip to their favorite restaurant. Food is love, and what’s more loving than sushi or an Acai bowl? It gets better: Grandma 2.0, on a good day, and with the help of a baseball cap and over-sized sunglasses, just might pass for a mom who had her child later in life…but please don’t tell her that or she will never take the hat and glasses off. Chances are you might come across an older mom, or a younger grandmother, next time you’re shopping at Target, and wonder which one she is. She might be a grandmother if: • She says yes to all requests from kids hanging off the cart • She runs with the cart to make them laugh • She sings along to the Beatles song cover on the store’s speakers • If the kids talk back to her, she finds it entertaining and credits it to their high intelligence • Her patience defies logic • She is smiling….when no one else on line is • Underneath the toys and treats in her cart, you might find a Prevention magazine along with creams, lotions, potions, elixirs, and even snake oil that all promise to be anti-aging. And she buys two of everything. So props to Grandma 2.0, she may be trending, but the original model will never go out of style. The word “Grandma” will always be synonymous with hugs, kisses, laps to get lost in, shoulders to cry on, food, more food, love, more love, and the word...“yes”!

MUST KNOW

PICKLE BALL

What's Pickleball? It’s an enjoyable racket game for all ages and abilities and one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S. Corny name, super-fun game. Originated in 1965 by two friends in Washington state, the game is reportedly named after one of the inventors' dog, Pickle, who, whenever they played, would take the ball and run off with it because it was Pickle's ball. The men created rules, relying heavily on badminton, keeping in mind the original purpose, which was to create a fun game for all ages and abilities.

Pickleball contains elements of tennis, racquetball, badminton, and table tennis, and can be played with singles or doubles. Pickleball’s soaring popularity is partially due to how easy it is to learn, and partially due to it being social and fun. Although seniors love it because it’s low impact on the knees, it is currently being taught at middle and high schools. There are hundreds of players Island wide. Most importantly are the aspects of the game…if you had fun, you won! For more info about Pickleball, visit the official website: USAPA.org

HOW IT’S PLAYED The Rules are Simple; The game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. It can be played indoors or outdoors, and is played on a court about onethird the size of a badminton court with a modified tennis-style net. On Long Island, it’s usually played on tennis courts with lines marked out for the pickleball dimensions (20’ wide X 44’ long). Players use wooden or graphite paddles, similar to a paddleball paddle but lighter, and a plastic ball, much like a wiffle ball with holes all around it. The indoor balls have fewer but larger holes, while the outdoor balls have more but smaller holes to account for wind factor.

Dogma Dear Dr. Mil, Please settle this argument for us cardioloving canines. The other day a group of us met at the dog park and did sprints. Afterward, there was a heated debate over what’s the most effective lower body exercise. The male dogs claimed it was leg lifts, but the female dogs insisted it was squats. Can you weigh in? - Jack

e salute W our workforce, and drivers who have made us one of the finest bus companies in America.

Dear Jack, I’ve always been a big fan of squats, and I do them several times a day. Leg lifts have never worked for me. After a big meal I feel compelled to do some Burpees. A downward dog before bed, or better yet, while in bed, has always served me well. Wink. - Dr. Mil

Dear Dr. Mil, My humans are annoying the neighbors. No matter how loud I bark at them to be quiet, they repeatedly yell, "Shut Up!” It’s cutting into my beauty sleep. - Grrreta Dear Grrreta,

Humans are notoriously hard to train. Even the best of them refuse to be housebroken and continue to do their business in the house. You must model the behavior you want from them. Show them how to lie quietly. When they follow your lead, lick them profusely. If they lick you back, please book a family session. - Dr. Mil About Dr. Mil. MUST KNOW

Allergy Relief without Medication By Anthony Cerabino, BM, LMT, MSLAC Allergy season is upon us again. This year we experienced spring “flirting” with winter. That means many spring flowers surfaced prematurely and were in full bloom a little early. The same can be said about weeds and grasses. As early as February, many patients had come into the center with sinus congestion, runny noses and wheezing. Attention allergy sufferers: NAET may be the answer you are looking for. NAET (Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Technique) is a medication-free, allergy relief technique which incorporates the medical disciplines of chiropractic, acupuncture, biochemistry and kinesiology testing. I call it “AcupunctureFusion”. Needles are not even essential to the treatment protocol. We can use an acupressure devise or a coldlaser light to stimulate the

acupuncture points for the “needle-shy” patient. The NAET protocol was created in 1983 and there are well over 16,000 practitioners worldwide. Simply stated, the NAET protocol resets the nervous system to accept the allergen without medication. There is no use of medications, inhalers or antihistamines in the treatment protocol. A regular user of such drugs will be weaned off the drug protocol gracefully, and more importantly, in a safe and timely manner. An allergy can be expressed in many more ways than most people expect. Any system in the body can be affected by an allergen. The respiratory system may react with shortness of breath, wheezing, sinus congestion, sneezing and spontaneous sweating. The cardiovascular system may respond with a rapid heartbeat, atrial fibrillation

and chest tightness. The integumentary system (skin, hair, and nails) often exhibits either a rash in patches or throughout the body; or open skin sores, which can be an extreme eczema condition or dry, itchy skin. The entire body system can shut down from an extreme sensitivity to an allergen, as in an anaphylaxis shock, which would require an immediate treatment, usually with an epi-pen injecting the body with epinephrine. It is possible to be allergic to almost anything, not just the usual suspects such as wheat, peanuts, animal dander, pollen and molds. Some common examples of allergens are salt, sugar, caffeine, spice, alcohol, food coloring/additives, cotton, paper, artificial sweeteners, cleaning agents, gold, silver, petroleum products and the list goes on. When least expected, an allergen

could be the cause of your health problems. Other common pathologies, such as autoimmune disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia syndrome, depression, systemic inflammation, frequent common colds, psoriasis, irregular menstrual cycles, and many other illnesses may be allergy related. Hundreds of NAET videos can be viewed on YouTube to gain a better understanding of this powerful, safe, clean and simple protocol. A very thorough and meticulous health history is paramount to getting results with NAET. I firmly believe proper care requires proper time spent with the patient. That should be the case when visiting any healthcare practitioner. May you enjoy all this beautiful spring has to offer… including the flowers!

I Found a New Dentist that I LOVE! If you were like me as a kid, a visit to the dentist ranked pretty high on your “Most Dreaded Experience List". Dentistry has come a long way since we were children. Fear is no longer associated with a trip to the dentist. Prioritized comfort, paired with today’s advanced techniques and technology, can actually make time in the dental chair a pleasant experience. When I visited Duggan Dental Group, I was treated to the “New Patient Experience”, created to make patients comfortable and relaxed. After meeting the staff, who were very friendly and attentive, I was given a tour of their office and shown all the latest equipment. I immediately noticed how clean and modern everything was. As part of my exam, they used a large screen to actually show me what they see, and explained in detail what they can do for my teeth in order to achieve optimal dental health. Digital x-rays were also used to provide a clear, precise picture of what couldn’t be seen on the large screen.

From the moment I met Dr. Duggan, I felt at ease from his personality and extensive knowledge on current and new technologies. He is clearly committed to providing high quality dental care. But, what really ‘wow’d’ me was Duggan Dental’s Discount Plan, designed for people like myself, who do not have dental insurance. The Discount Plan covers cleanings and x-ray exams, and also offers significant discounts on various dental services like implants. That’s huge! They offer both family and individual plans at very affordable prices. It’s very important to take care of your teeth; Duggan Dental makes it very easy for everybody to do that. They recognize that everybody’s needs are different and treat each patient on an individual basis. Even better, Duggan Dental is rooted in giving back to the

DR. DUGGAN

community. They are a Premiere Movie Sponsor for Regal Summer Movies, which allows children to go to the movies for $1 all summer. They also donate to Little League, sponsor Breast Cancer walks, contribute goods to Operation Gratitude for the troops overseas, provide goody baskets for the local schools, and the list goes on. The attentive, personalized care from Dr. Duggan and his experienced dental team was quite impressive and I am happy to highlight them in the LIST. -JL
