CALDER DESIGN GROUP

Manhattan based interior design firm, the Calder Design Group, has a cosmopolitan flair that extends far beyond New York state lines into some of the most innovative homes in the country. With strong roots in NYC, and ranked in New York magazine’s Top 50 New York designers six years in a row, we asked CEO Melanie Calder Russo what prompted her creative eye to shift to Long Island’s south shore? “I was born on Long Island and moved back here with my family in 2014. I want to bring my firm’s style and flair to the south shore – my home town,” remarked Melanie. “I have seen a huge shift in the design perspective here - much more of a metropolitan vibe. I see a progression in style in the businesses and homes being built and renovated. I see it in the new construction retail shops on Main Street in Babylon, as well as the new apartment complex being built on Maple Avenue in Bay Shore. I would love to be able to bring a little NYC edge and vivacity to my home base. My husband, Vinny (Vinny Russo of Russo Custom Furniture & Russo Industries) and I also have a furniture manufacturing business together. We specialize in creating custom furniture and unique pieces. In 2016 we moved that business to Deer Park. We have 2 young children and it honestly made sense to expand our work closer to home.” Born into a world of design, Melanie was destined to carry on her father’s legacy. Nicholas A. Calder, Melanie’s father, first established Calder Design in 1971. Her parents worked together; her father as the designer and her mother managing the books and back office. “Raised in NYC, I was constantly going to work with my mom, and to job sites with my dad at an early age – as young as 6. As I grew up, I knew I loved the creative world and beautiful things. While I attended NYU for undergrad, I worked in fashion doing private trunk shows and sales. During college, I pursued a degree in journalism with a focus on fashion. After graduating in 2002, I did some major soul searching and realized that my passion for creating beautiful things translated perfectly to interior design. In 2003, I joined my father in his business. I’ll never forget my first day - he handed me a plan and a scale rule and told me to get to work. I loved it immediately. Fabricating a job, selecting the fabrics, wallcoverings and furniture - seeing it come to life – it was everything I was looking for in my career. I took the reins of the business and rebranded it Calder Design Group. My father and I still work together and I owe everything to him.” Recognized for her hip design style, “clean and classic with a twist,” Melanie shared her thoughts and perspective on current design trends… “I still think that farmhouse modern is a popular trend, but I feel people are ready to shake that up a bit with a bold color or vibrant pattern or print, which is what I really love to do. Something unexpected. Yin and yang. A little accent goes a long way. I am also seeing clients taking more risks – allowing us to add interesting accents and pieces, such as an organic wood sculpture or an artsy stool. That said, we always like to get direction from the client. It’s so important to know not only what they like, but what they don’t like.

Most of our clients are asking for clean and timeless style, but with less fuss. We use a ton of performance and indoor/outdoor fabrics in our interiors. Being able to blot up red wine off a white sofa is such a game changer.” CDG offers a full range of services, from working with architects on ground-up construction, to selecting and designing all details, such as windows, doors, moldings, ceilings, cabinetry, baths, vanities and all interior/exterior items needed for a home. “We work closely with our clients to create their dream space. We provide detailed drawings and elevations, design custom cabinetry, furniture and built-ins. We give a complete design concept on all of our projects. Be it a new residence construction, full remodel, or single room redo, no job is too big or too small,” Melanie stated. “At times, my husband and I get to work together, which is really great.

Vinny has worked as the general contractor on many of our projects. He and I have collaborated on making countless pieces of custom furniture, built-ins, bars, kitchens and vanities for many of CDG’s projects. I love styling a project – shopping and sourcing furniture, pulling fabrics, wallcoverings, materials – seeing it come to life. The absolute best day is when we complete a project and the client walks in and we see the excitement in their eyes. Helping them to create something not only beautiful, but something they could never have imagined is the best reward. We are currently working on a ground-up residential project in Babylon. It is truly stunning and I cannot wait to see it complete. But, designing aside, my family is what I am most passionate about. I love to cook - Vinny and I actually had a café in Brooklyn in our past life! I am also an exercise enthusiast. I love living on the south shore … the warm weather, sitting poolside, and especially the sandy beaches.” FOLLOW @THELISTMAGAZINELI

Dear Readers, Welcome to our spring issue! May and June are popular months for celebrating wonderful new milestones - congratulations to all of you who have special occasions to honor and gather for! This issue is always a tribute to all women. Happy Mother’s Day to all the hardworking moms and women who help raise and care for our children. Mothers tended to be our cheerleaders and nurturers, encouraging and consoling us through successes and failures as we grew. Yet, when we recently spoke with some local lady-entrepreneurs, we heard touching stories about how it was their fathers who helped shape who they are today. Their dads were the ones who taught them about determination and perseverance. This was also true for me. So in sticking with tradition, we dedicate this issue to all the wonderful women out there, but also shine a spotlight of gratitude on all the dads who were such a positive influence on steering their kids toward successful paths. Some of my favorite experiences in publishing this magazine have been meeting people who are passionate and excited about what they do. For our annual Celebrating Women issue, we thought it might be fun to hear from some female business owners. We were so impressed with every one of them. We hope their stories will inspire women (and men!) to work at making their dreams a reality. They are proof that passion for what you love to do can lead to a successful business. If you can dream it, you can do it. With age comes wisdom, and over the years I have learned that, when it comes to women, who we are is not always what the world sees on the outside. We are defined by our deeds, talents, and purpose we feel on the inside, regardless of what the world sees. We are loving caretakers, loyal friends, generous providers, talented artists, social activists, valuable teachers, and environmental protectors. Strong and beautiful. That is who we are. It is always my goal to make our lifestyle magazine one that inspires you to be happy and healthy, and see the beauty in all of life’s seasons. Best, Jo

MUST KNOW

Inside Out For this project, we really wanted to expand the living space by opening it up to the backyard. We loved the idea of having an outdoor living room where you could enjoy all of the comforts of an interior room (TV, fireplace, bar, lounge seating) while feeling like you are sitting outside. We created this by installing an entire wall of glass doors that folds away and disappears. It creates such a nice flow, especially when entertaining. And on a cold or rainy day, you can still enjoy the outdoors, but stay warm and protected from the elements. By adding wood-look tile to the ceiling, we were able to give an otherwise cold space some warmth and depth. By marrying the indoors and out, you allow yourself the freedom to enjoy your exterior space throughout all seasons.

BEAUTY

Pandemonium Boutique’s stylists Christine & Ashley gave us the Must-Have wardrobe items for this spring/summer season…

Loving this cover-up we spotted at Drew Patrick Home Store! Effortless and breezy, crochet pullover ponchos and tunics are a Must-Have for a coastal lifestyle. They are perfect for layering over bathing suits, tank tops and camisoles.

We Love Fashion trends are bright and feminine. Tops have girly details, like floral prints and flutter sleeves, and are featured in both woven and knit fabrics. Business casual is back… again! Man-tailored buttondown shirts beneath oversized blazers paired with a wide leg trouser or flare jean are classic silhouettes reminiscent of the 90s. Bright green and pastels, especially lavender, are dominating the color palette. We are also seeing bright pops of bold neon as accents and accessories. Don’t be afraid to occasionally walk away from your skinny jeans! For the warmer months we love a wider leg or straighter fit, relaxed bottom. A flare fit elongates your leg and looks perfect with a platform or clog.

Gauze shirts, pants, and dresses are always favorite summer staples. Accessorize with playful mix-and-match jewelry. Top it off in style. Summer hats elevate your look while keeping your face protected from the sun. Accessorize the beach house look - we are seeing straw in belts and bags too!

Beach Fragrances A delightful line of delicate floral and fresh fragrances named after the towns & beaches on Long Island. Great scents for this time of year. Available at Pandemonium Boutique and other select retailers. beachfragrances.com Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm This silky, 100% vegan lip mask hydrates & soothes in seconds while providing just a touch of sheer beige color and a hint of vanilla flavor. Available at Sephora.

Eminence Organics Sun Defense Minerals Powdered SPF 30 These minerals go beyond sun safety, they can double as a light foundation or bronzer. They come in 6 beautiful shades, including translucent. It offers sun protection, is chemical free, hypoallergenic, water resistant, and reef friendly. Available at Village Salon & Spa, W. LOCAL WOMEN IN BUSINESS

MUST KNOW

Ryan Flynn, Co-Owner/Designer, Salt & Barrel

GET DOWN

My greatest mentor/inspiration is my father. He has run a successful business for 60 years, and in doing so, he has taught me how to be kind, open and fair. He says one of the most important things in life and business is ‘to find common ground with your people’ and ‘know who you are and own your mistakes.’ These teachings have been so valuable throughout my career and have helped me lead in an authentic way.

What am I most proud of? Naturally I am very proud of the beautiful space we have created at Salt & Barrel, with lovely food and service, but I think I’m most proud of the mentorship within it. Over time, I’ve started to move past the success of the restaurant and towards the ‘people’ part of it. As an owner, if your role is to mentor somebody, what you’re essentially doing is taking stock of what you’ve learned, the mistakes you’ve made, the successes you’ve had, and kind of coalesce them and translate it back out so to pass it on in a meaningful way. So I guess for me, the next level of success is being a part of someone else’s growth, and influencing them to achieve greater things. I’ve had the pleasure of working with some very special people, who, I am proud to say, have moved on to grow and follow their dreams. I’d like to think I was a part of that.

DRINK UP

I am deeply grateful to live in a time when women can be respected in the work place. I’m not saying we still don’t have obstacles, but it’s rewarding to be a part of an industry, once male dominated, where the paradigm is shifting in both the front and back of the house. Women and men are yin and yang; both important blends in all business. I believe at Salt & Barrel we’ve achieved an equal balance of both.

MUST KNOW

WOMEN WITH A VISION

If You Can Dream It You Can Do It! We asked some LI lady-entrepreneurs what prompted them to open their businesses... for each of them it started with a vision, a dream and a leap of faith. Meg Dowe, Oyster Farmer, Yennicott Oysters

As Long Islanders, we all have a connection to the water. It is a big part of what defines me. Growing up, I spent a lot of time at the beach fishing and clamming. My parents put great effort into getting me outside and interacting with nature. Having these experiences created a desire to do something positive in my community. My dream was to have a career where I could be my own boss, work in nature, and do something supportive for the environment. As a result, I became an oyster farmer. My family history begins with some of the first settlers in Hempstead and Southampton. They were sea captains and tobacco importers. In the 1800s, my ancestors started farming oysters. By the time I was born, the only connection I had to oyster farming was the stories my grandfather told. Having the opportunity to revive a part of my family’s past was a big motivation for me. I started my farm from the ground up, pouring my heart, blood, sweat and tears into making it a success. Working on the water is a rare gift. I take pride in what I do and hopefully inspire people to become stewards of our home and protect the fragile waters of Long Island for future generations.

Kelly Peckholdt, owner of Positions Dance Studio

“I grew up dancing at Positions! I started as a student when I was 3 years old, and eventually transitioned to the faculty. I had always dreamed of owning a dance studio, but when I was younger I saw it as a retirement job. I went to school to earn a history degree and become a high school social studies teacher, and I did teach in public high schools for 4 years after I graduated. However, in 2012, at the age of 24, the dream of owning my own dance studio (the one I had danced at my entire life!) fell into my lap. It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. Now, every day, I get to pass on my love of dance and movement to children and adults alike.”

Karen Marvin, Owner of South Shore Paddleboards

“From the moment I paddled on the Great South Bay, I knew I had to tell everyone about this awesome experience. Being able to get a workout while relaxing was too good to be true. I wanted everyone to have the opportunity to experience paddleboarding just as I had. With that dream in mind, South Shore Paddleboards was born! In May of 2014, South Shore Paddleboards opened as the largest SUP shop on Long Island. The shop is not just a place, it has become a warm, beachy, inviting, and fun experience for all who visit.”

Toni Panariello & Samantha Buser, Yoginis & Co-partners of The Welcome Mat Yoga Studio

“Samantha and I both taught at a local yoga studio in Islip. One morning, as I arrived to teach my class, I realized the yoga studio had abruptly closed! We were completely caught off guard. It was heartbreaking. Not only were we faced with the dilemma of losing our yoga home, but an entire community. Sam and I were not seeking a business, but we shared a passion for yoga, and embarking on a new adventure as business owners was a journey we both were excited to take. The road was not easy, and at times we felt unsure whether we could keep things afloat. But, becoming new business owners has taught us so much. Here’s the takeaway: you’re probably right where you are supposed to be, so look for the signs and the open path. A business may not be something you have planned to embrace, but if it is something you’re passionate about, go for it! We are now celebrating The Welcome Mat’s fifth anniversary! We are so happy we took the leap of faith. We love teaching the practice of yoga and the healing space we have created…our community has grown even bigger and better than before.”

Maryellen & Sam, Mother & Daughter Duo, Owners of Bay Shore Krafty Hands “My mom and I love being creative and have always shared a passion for hosting parties. We’ve worked well together in the past and dreamed of going into business as a team. We recently decided to make our dream a reality and opened Krafty Hands in Bay Shore. It lets us combine our creative talents with our love of entertaining by hosting unique parties for the community. We've designed our studio to be a play space where both children and adults can have fun exploring arts and crafts."

MUST KNOW

WOMEN IN MUSIC

Devin & Digital: Husband & Wife Duo in Perfect Harmony Local musician Bobby Digital is best known for solo gigs, duo gigs, guitar and vocals for J Haus Band, but he also sings with his wife Devin Raye. As we celebrate women in this issue, we wanted to shine the spotlight on Devin, being a mom, and about her gigs with hubby as Devin and Digital.

Were you a singer prior to knowing Bobby? Singing was always a part of my life and passion of mine. There are videos of me at 3 and 4 years old singing. By the age of 5, my parents put me in singing lessons and I remained in lessons until I was about 16. I did take some college vocal classes as well. I started musical theater in 10th grade and continued that for a few years. When did you and Bobby meet? Bobby and I met at Southside Bar & Restaurant (now it is Goldy’s Gems). We laid eyes on one another at Verace (now Tellers Next Door) in 2011, but officially locked eyes and met in April, 2016, and got married in 2017. Did the fact that you and Bobby were both musically inclined have an impact on you getting together? Music definitely had an impact on us getting together. Bobby’s band, J Haus Band, was playing the night we met…they were the reason I met up with my friend that night. While they were playing we kept locking eyes. After the show we inched our way towards one another through the crowd and started talking, mainly about music. That’s how we exchanged numbers, discussing piano lessons. I don’t think we cared much about the piano lessons, I think we just wanted to be in contact. Kids? Our first child, our son Wesley, was born in April of 2018. Our daughter, Layla, was born

The LIST was thrilled to chat with Bella DeNapoli, West Islip’s own singing sensation and Top 20 finalist on The Voice! Please tell us a little back story about your singing. I am from West Islip, and have been singing since I could talk! My parents have heavily influenced my love for music, as they are in two cover bands that play all over Long Island called “Beernutz” and “Fine Wine”. I also have had a heavy influence from my musical theatre background. What lead you to auditioning for The Voice? I have actually auditioned for the show 7 times!!! What led me to The Voice was my dream, my determination and my perseverance. Can you tell us a little about your experience on The Voice and working with Ariana Grande? It was the best experience I could have ever asked for. I learned so much about myself, my artistry and this industry. Ariana exceeded my expectations… and let me tell you, the bar was already set high! She is the best mentor and friend that I am forever thankful for. Definitely the best takeaway from the experience was the fellow contestants. Friendships built off of that show have blossomed into beautiful real life supporters. What are you doing now and where can fans go to see you perform? I am currently in LA writing music, networking and performing on the West Coast! I am also releasing an album titled “Three Letters" available on all platforms May 10th! I am so stoked and have a few shows lined up on the East Coast this May as well! What would you like to do in the future? TOUR TOUR TOUR!!! Connecting with my fans is my favorite thing to do. What are your other passions/interests? I love to ski and snowboard, and love working, running and cooking!

THE LIST MAGAZINE 917.559.7821

just shy of two years later in March of 2020, right before our MNK world ended (MarriedNo-Kids). Are your kids picking up your love of music? They absolutely are picking up our love for music! They are both extremely interested in playing. If I bring them to one of Bobby’s gigs, their little guitars are in tow and they will head right to the stage, with zero stage fright, and play and sing with their Dad. I’m hoping the four of us play as a band together as the years go on. How often do you and Bobby play together? We play all year long, but gigs definitely pick up in the summertime and fall. We have been doing a lot of private parties and events, as well as wedding cocktail hours. Every now and again I sing at a wedding with the band which has been awesome… I really love doing that. What are your other interests? I am passionate about being a mother and taking pictures. Cooking is also something I really enjoy, but I haven’t been able to focus on that much in the rush-rush moments of being a parent. Where will you and Bobby be playing together this spring/summer? We will be at Henley’s Village Tavern in May and are currently working on our spring and summer schedule…stay tuned! We also have a lot of weddings coming up this season.

URBAN LIVING IN THE HEART OF BAY SHORE BY ROSEMA RIE K LUE P FE L

Just steps from Main Street, Eleven Maple is the newest addition to Bay Shore’s bustling downtown. The long-awaited, newly constructed, mixed-use building has 90 new rental apartments, purposely designed to support a walkable urban lifestyle. The dramatic transformation of 11 Maple Avenue is the culmination of the combined efforts of attorney and real estate developer Lisa Pace and Larry Gargano, President of Greenview Properties. Over the past two decades, Greenview Properties, well known for building diversified apartment complexes, from beautiful garden apartments to stylish loft living, has built more than 30 residential communities on Long Island. The Pace Family has been in the business of real estate development for over sixty years, with Lisa, proud daughter of the highly respected real estate developer, attorney John Pace, and Breast Cancer activist Lorraine Pace, learning early on the lessons of patience and perseverance.

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE BUILD It was Lisa who originally purchased the property at 11 Maple Avenue. An attorney, mediator, philanthropist, real estate developer and doting mother and sister, Lisa Pace is a busy gal. Recently, she put some time aside to speak with us about the Eleven Maple project, which has been a long labor of love for her.

GREENVIEW PROPERTIES

“Bay Shore is a unique hamlet, it exemplifies the Great South Bay lifestyle. My dad always believed in Bay Shore. He worked as an attorney for the Town of Islip Community Development Agency for many years and spearheaded programs to help restore Bay Shore back to its glory days. 11 Maple Avenue was once a beautiful, prosperous hospital, Dr. King’s Hospital. Upon the hospital's closing, the building wound up in disrepair and became a dilapidated eyesore in the village. I remember standing at that site and envisioning an apartment building; one with an upscale-urban-hotel-vibe that offered luxurious amenities to its residents. A building that the community would be proud of. With Larry as a partner, we were able to achieve that vision of reviving this property, Eleven Maple, back into a beautiful location.” Growing up, Lisa was no stranger to construction sites. At the young age of 6, Lisa was assigned the task of retrieving nails dropped by the tradesmen working on one of her father’s many building projects. Her father instilled in her the value of hard work while she observed the daily transformation from brick & mortar to the completed structure. It was her father who encouraged her to find a building project to take on.

Embracing the surrounding neighborhood was paramount. With this in mind, the building was designed with five display windows along Maple Avenue. These massive windows will be used for local artists to showcase their talents, for non-profit organizations to raise awareness and promote events, and also for local retail shops to advertise. Lisa is especially proud of these windows. “Maple Avenue is traveled by so many, and we are happy to include the community and share the visibility with so many wonderful organizations and talents,” she stated.

BETTER TOGETHER “I am lucky to have had amazing partners through this long journey, namely my brothers, John Pace Jr., and Gregory J. Pace, as well as my cousin Andrew J. Pace,” commented Lisa. “They, along with my dad, always believed in my judgment. We partnered up with Larry Gargano, who shared our vision and excitement. Larry’s creativity is a gift, and he was the right person to help achieve our vision. We have a unique working relationship where our differences in opinions always resulted in the right decision and perfect outcome for the project. He is a talented businessman, building countless apartments with great appeal. I pride myself on my attention to detail. Together, we have a great mix of talents, and through this partnership and our shared vision, we have created this jewel on the south shore of Long Island,” Lisa shared.

“My dad inspired me to believe in myself. He taught me to trust my instincts and to never give up on my vision, in spite of obstacles,” Lisa remarked.

THE APARTMENTS Conveniently located, the apartments are within walking distance of shops, restaurants, markets, and of course the Long Island Rail Road and the Fire Island Ferry terminal. Parking spaces for residents and guests are provided in a concealed parking area. Eleven Maple boasts numerous amenities, including a fitness center, a rooftop deck, and indoor and outdoor common areas where residents can socialize and meet their neighbors in a comfortable and inviting setting. Being a mixed-use building, the apartments come with added perks. The Pizzeria, located on the main level, is reminiscent of an Italian cafe. Owners Cliff Weinstein and brothers Paul and Dan Saccoccio created a beautifully designed place where one can sip an espresso in the middle of the day or feast on a plate of pasta. The specialty drinks are fabulous as well. Lisa’s personal favorite is named after her, The Little Sicilian.

NY State’s population has been on the decline for many years; on Long Island, a lot of the blame has been attached to a shortage of housing options. Upstate, Long Island, and Bay Shore all have unique charm and beauty, from the mountains to the beaches, and of course the city. With all that Bay Shore’s Main Street has to offer, with its proximity to Fire Island and NYC transit, Eleven Maple is a great example of how to maximize that potential and give people a reason to stay. Today, Lisa is reminded of those early days with her father. Watching Gianna, her 13 year old daughter, enjoy partaking in the many design selections of Eleven Maple, Lisa remarked, “I hope I inspire her to always believe in her vision and to believe in herself.”

Boho-chic is a laid back, unconventional and highly expressive style. An eclectic mix of natural elements, different colors, patterns and textures will get you there. With a few small changes made by homeowners Beverly & Larry Glickman, this Long Beach backyard took on an island-breezey look and carefree-vibe. “It’s our summertime oasis,” remarked Larry. “We chose vibrant colors on the many pillows, fabrics, and rug to create a happy and festive feel. In the height of summer, we have planters overflowing with colorful flowers. It’s a fun and inviting space. We’ve hosted more gatherings here than I can count… this year will be more of the same,” stated Larry.

“Spray paint can work wonders on most outdoor furniture wood, metal, and even plastic,” said Larry. “Our redwood picnic table was looking old and faded. We sprayed it candyapple red for a pop of color. It was an instant upgrade - not only for the table - it improved the entire space. Don't hesitate to re-purpose things - create a fun environment! Mix up some cocktails, fire up the music and chill!" Excellent ideas, Bev & Larry!
