TO ME, W ITH LOVE The past two years have brought unprecedented challenges to so many of us in ways we never could have imagined. Creativity, flexibility and resilience were some of the most popular remedies found in our survival kits. Taking care of family and friends was repeatedly at the top of the day’s agenda. Most days, taking care of ourselves didn’t make the cut. As we stand facing 2022, we have crossed fingers and high hopes that this year will not be ruled by the pandemic. Suffice to say, we have had enough. With that thought as a motivating factor, this issue is dedicated to some much-needed and well-deserved self-maintenance. It’s time to take care of ourselves; our whole selves; body, mind and soul. Inside and out. With love, health and happiness as our anchor, we are all about starting fresh with the goal of feeling and looking good this year. We hope you’ll be inspired to make some positive changes. The ink from the beginning of your journey may be dry…but you can still change what happens from here. It is very important to take care of you, so you can take care of everything else.

“The most powerful relationship you will ever have is the relationship with yourself.” — Steve Maraboli “Self-love and self-care is where it all starts. Loving yourself more and selfcare is one of the most loving acts of kindness you can do for yourself. You don’t have to stop caring about others to care about yourself. Once you connect with yourself, you become more in tune with the world around you. What you’re doing when you reconnect on a positive level with yourself is making a better you for everyone connected to you. Our mind, heart, body, and spirit need to be loved, nurtured and cared for. When you’re more content, and well looked after, you have so much more to give to the world.

ʻSelf-loveʼ is not giving up one thing for another, it’s having it all balance together.” — Stacie Martin

MUST KNOW

LOVE THE SKIN YOU’RE IN, AT EVERY AGE Using a combination of natural and high-tech ingredients, there are many skincare products available today that will actually produce results. Our age is very influential over what we are trying to achieve, be it maintaining a beautiful complexion or attaining a more youthful one. We asked renown dermatologist, Dr. Kavita Mariwalla of Mariwalla Dermatology in West Islip, to shed some light on the who, what, and when of skin care for best results. “I think every routine should have one product that is in one of these three categories: cleanse, protect, and reverse. The ‘protect’ is easy and should be a sunscreen that you like to use year round. In the winter on Long Island SPF 30 is fine; but in the summer I would bump that up to an SPF 50. Different products should be used at different stages of your life; so for the other categories this is what I recommend based on age: In your 20s: Using sunscreen is most important. I would also begin to apply a vitamin C serum during the day. A glycolic acid cream at night a few times a week would also be fine.

In your 50s: During the day, apply a hyaluronic acid serum followed by an antioxidant with green tea polyphenols, then top off with sunscreen. At night, use a peptide cream followed by a retinoid and a moisturizing cream. Women 60+: Start with a vitamin C serum, then a lipid based moisturizer, and finish with sunscreen. At night, apply an anti-glycosylation serum followed by a peptide cream, then top with an alpharet cream - I like Skinbetter Science AlphaRet Overnight Cream. It’s important to mention that the order of application matters; the rule is to always do lightest to thickest when it comes to applying products. Apply an essence or mist first, then a serum, then a lotion, finally a cream. Antioxidants are for the day; retinoids and glycolic acids are for at night. Remember that skin care doesn’t need to be complex…just make sure you do it regularly.”

In your 30s: Use an antioxidant serum, like a vitamin C with E, or resveratrol serum during the day, and an OTC retinol at night. One that I like a lot that does not break the budget is Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair. And continue sunscreen of course! In your 40s: Apply sunscreen and then a niacinamide serum to reduce pore size. But don’t forget staple serums like Alumier MD C + E serum. At night use a peptide cream followed by a retinoid.

Skin’s needs change over the years from age-related, hormonal and environmental issues; therefore our skincare products need to change as well. Dr. Mariwalla gave us a quick explanation as to why we should use certain products at specific ages. In a nutshell, these are the active roles key ingredients play in many skincare products: VITAMIN C SERUM: Vitamin C plays an antioxidant role on the skin. During the day we are exposed to outside factors like ultraviolet light, blue light from screens and pollution in the environment.

These factors create free radicals on the skin which steal oxygen from our healthy cells, damaging them. Applying an antioxidant creates a reservoir which serves to neutralize the free radicals. VITAMIN A SERUM: Vitamin A is typically used on the skin in the form of a retinol; however a straight vitamin A serum is not one I recommend as it is typically more harsh than the derivative of vitamin A, which is a retinol.

come in different percentages; it is important to know which strength you are using so you don’t give yourself a chemical burn. Best used at night, as it can lead to slight increase in sun sensitivity. Caution to those with sensitive skin. HYALURONIC ACID: Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that attracts water. It is used on the skin as a hydrating agent and is gentle enough for all skin types and can be easily layered.

RETINOIDS VS. RETINOLS: Retinoids are the prescription version of retinols. Retinols are available OTC and act on the skin to produce a number of results, such as increase the speed of cell cycle turnover so that your skin looks healthier and fresh, improve collagen production, decrease pore size, and improve dyspigmentation.

COLLAGEN: Collagen is a part of our natural skin. At this time, the studies are not clear about whether ingesting it or topically applying it actually benefits the skin. You are better off using a retinol in my opinion.

I think of all the various products, using a retinol for the long run gives the best results. A word of caution: for those with sensitive skin it takes some getting used to; and I don’t recommend pregnant women use a retinol.

Dr. Kavita Mariwalla, MD, Double Board Certified Dermatologist and Mohs Surgeon is based in West Islip. She has been referenced numerous times in major beauty & health magazines and sites as Shape, Well + Good, Allure, Women’s Health, Glamour, Pop Sugar, and Yahoo News. The LIST is elated to have her in our local lifestyle magazine!

effective at achieving a more youthful, smooth and brilliant complexion. Here’s what the VITRA team told us about their top treatments: Botox and Fillers: We specialize in injectables like Botox and Juvederm. These are very popular with both our male and female patients because the results are almost immediate. They can make a dramatic improvement in facial aesthetics with limited downtime. Also worth noting here is that not all products are created equal; it is very important to choose your provider wisely so you can feel confident that you are being treated with quality products and skill that will provide optimal results. RF Microneedling: This minimally-invasive facial treatment is one we frequently administer and is a staple in most treatment plans. It combines microneedling, radiofrequency, and light therapy to help stimulate the natural production of collagen and elastin, which we lose as we age. It tones and tightens the skin, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, diminishes acne scars, calms acne breakouts and evens out pigmentation. Downtime is minimal and results improve over days and last for months. Thread Lifts: A relatively new procedure, thread lifts are becoming known as the "non-surgical face lift.” These are a popular treatment for patients who are not ready for surgery, or for patients who want to refresh

skin from the inside out. Add PRP for a real boost!

R F MI CR ONE E DL ING Morpheus8/ Vivace RF Microneedling stimulates collagen resulting in skin rejuvenation, reduction of fine lines/ wrinkles, scar remodeling, resolution of pigmentation, and the treatment of acne.

B O DY S CU LPTI NG CoolSculpting CoolSculpting results in a 20-25% fat reduction using fat-freezing cryolipolysis technology for permanent results. Evolve (Trim, Tone, Tite) Evolve noninvasive radio frequency procedures work to reduce the appearance of

their look a few years post-surgery. A thread lift is a procedure where temporary sutures are used to provide a subtle lift to the facial skin. This has the effect of pulling the skin back slightly and lifting and tightening the face. In addition to lifting the skin, threads also combat aging by stimulating the body's "healing response" which causes the body to direct waves of collagen to treated areas.

T HE BODY With summer on the horizon, and the extra pandemic-pounds still lingering, we wanted to know all about the body treatments. “Summer bodies are made in the winter,” remarked Erin Biel, PA-C, “body sculpting treatments should start sometime between January and March for optimal results just in time for the summer. CoolSculpting is an extremely popular and effective body contouring treatment used to target localized areas for permanent fat elimination. We also offer Evolve Trim and Tone, which removes fat as well as tones and tightens targeted areas of the body. Sometimes they can be combined; CoolSculpting can be used to non-surgically remove fat deposits, then followed-up with EvolveX to help tone and tighten the skin and muscles. Both procedures are noninvasive. Currently there is a lot of interest in buttocks shaping. We offer non-surgical contouring of the buttocks and cellulite reduction through injectable treatments and medical devices.”

“All of these techniques are good options for people who are at or near their goal weight but have localized areas they want to reduce or improve. Men typically get great results from body treatments. They may have different requirements, which we take into account when recommending a treatment plan.” The non-invasive aesthetic procedure field is growing quickly; that said, there is much to be wary of. It is paramount to know the credentials and experience of the providers, what products are being injected or administered, and also the origin and quality of those products. There is a lot going on in this field which is dangerous and risky…if it seems too cheap or too good to be true it probably is. The staff at VITRA Aesthetic Clinic are licensed and certified medical professionals with years of experience and knowledge contributing to their expertise…you’re in good hands here. Almost everyone is a good candidate for some type of aesthetic care, especially those of us who have celebrated several decades of birthdays. Whether you want to make a positive change, or have an upcoming event or wedding, schedule a complementary consultation now so the VITRA team can design a plan to have you looking your best. Sometimes even subtle improvements to the outside can trigger substantial improvements on the inside.

HAIR CARE

HAIR CARE

Maintain Your Mane Long, short, straight, or curly… if it’s healthy, it’s beautiful. We asked Luxe Blow Dry and Color Bar owner Jennifer Frisina to share some professional tips and advice for fuller, healthier, more beautiful hair… Overwashing may be the most common offense to hair. It strips hair’s natural oils, which in turn can actually make hair greasy because the scalp may overproduce oil in attempt to replace what’s been stripped. “We recommend washing your hair every 3-4 days and using a dry shampoo in between washes if needed,” stated Jen. Choose quality. Cheap products and hair dryers that dry out your hair are some of the worst things to use on your hair. Ingredients in your hair care products matter. It’s important to know what you’re washing your locks with because they can cause irritation, buildup, or strip color from color-treated hair. “Always choose color-safe products to keep newly applied color looking fabulous. There are a lot of products on the market,” Jenn commented, “we use only high quality shampoos and conditioners at our salon, all color safe, so they will not strip any newly applied hair color. All our hair care products are professionally graded, as well as our brushes and hair dryers, to help keep hair shiny and healthy.” Regular maintenance is one of the best things you can do for beautiful hair. Hairstyles can lose their shape and look sloppy if not properly kept up with. Trimming split ends is a must – especially if your hair is long.

"Scheduling a weekly blowout may seem like a luxury, but it’s actually one of the best things you can do for yourself and your hair." Professional stylists are trained to create long lasting blowouts, which gives you the freedom from having to do your hair every day. "Depending on the length and texture of your hair, and the frequency of when you wish to wash, a Luxe blowout can last anywhere from 3-7 days,” added Jenn.

Hair Products that Jenn and the team at Luxe Blow Dry and Color Bar are loving right now: Kenra Blowout Spray - It coats your hair with nourishing vitamins & minerals and conditions it prior to a blowout. R+Co. Dallas - This is a really great thickening spray that smells amazing. We like to use this at the roots for body and fullness.

Design Me Texture Spray - We spray this onto dry hair prior to curling to give hair some grit and texture. It’s really great for creating beach waves! Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo - A go-to favorite! It’s the one we like best for inbetween washes and blowouts. Products available at Luxe Blow Dry & Color Bar

SLEEP TIPS

Sleeping Beauty WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE, sleep may be the closest thing there is to a fountain of youth. No amount of moisturizing creams or brightening peels can give your skin the fresh-faced glow of a restful night’s sleep. Beauty sleep is a real thing and a must for hydrated, youthful-looking skin. If you are over-tired and sleep deprived it will show on your face. No coincidence your nighttime beauty regime is so important: the skin’s cellular repair activity is at its optimum during the resting phase when the body is sleeping. When you don’t get adequate sleep your body produces increased cortisol, the stress hormone, which makes you look and feel stressed and tired. It also causes inflammation, which depletes collagen production in skin. It doesn’t affect just your face…lack of sleep is a major offense to your whole body. It not only causes crankiness and brain fog, it takes a toll on your inside, outside, and quality of life. Science has linked poor sleep with a number of health problems, including a weakened immune system, depression, and increased risk for high blood pressure and weight gain. Essentially, your entire body needs sleep in order to go into repair mode. According to the National Sleep Foundation, healthy adults need between 7 - 9 hours of sleep

per night. With today’s hectic, overscheduled lifestyle, many people fall short of that number. We definitely understand the struggle. Making small adjustments to your lifestyle and bedtime habits can help your mind unwind and prepare for a better night’s sleep. Here are some suggestions: Make your bedroom comfortable. Creating a sleep-inducing environment can help ease you into sleep more seamlessly by maximizing comfort and minimizing distractions. Keep your bedroom at a comfortable but cool temperature (65 degrees F is recommended). Window blinds or blackout shades are a must, as too much light filtering into the room can hamper sleep. Invest in a high-quality mattress and supportive pillows (FYI - your mattress should be replaced every 10 years and your pillows more often). Unplug early. Disconnect from your electronic devices at least an hour before going to bed. The flashing screens, intense colors and brightness all stimulate our brains and make it difficult to relax and fall asleep. The light emitting from screens also suppresses natural production of

melatonin, which helps promote healthy sleep. Create a relaxing bedtime routine. A warm bath or shower prior to activities that help put your mind at ease, such as reading, journaling, stretching, and meditation, can help prepare you for a good night’s rest. Whenever possible, go to bed and get up at the same time every day, it will help to set your biological clock. Get regular exercise. Studies have shown that incorporating consistent exercise into your lifestyle can help contribute to improved quality of sleep. Since exercise stimulates your body and keeps the brain alert, it’s best to schedule your workout early in the day. Avoid sleep disruptors. Caffeine after noon, alcohol in excess, late night eating and nicotine are all proven sleep disruptors. Sleep deprivation can have serious health consequences and should not be disregarded. Always try non-medicinal approaches to getting a good night’s sleep, however, if nothing seems to work, consider seeking medical attention. There is no lotion or potion that can take the place of the benefits of a good night’s rest.

MUST KNOW

MINDSET

Mindset Matters Your mindset is important; what goes in your mind space is vital in order to live a happier and healthier life. Positive or negative, what you allow to enter and choose to retain makes a difference. AVOID NEWS OVERDOSE. The news is an important way to stay connected to what's happening in the world. It can be educational, entertaining and even uplifting. Unfortunately, the news too frequently is bombarded with unsettling stories of suffering. These stories can skew your view of the world and cause you to focus on your worst fears instead of recognizing the good that surrounds you. You can't avoid these stories altogether, but try to minimize your exposure when you can, especially during trying times. STAY POSITIVE. Intentionally focus on the positive and not the negative. The glass is half full. When you find yourself feeling negative, deliberately flip the switch to something that makes you feel better. Stick with this new habit-forming process. It is powerful and can quickly bring peace and calm in your life when you use it consistently. DO SOMETHING MEANINGFUL EACH DAY. Do something

you enjoy every day, even if it's something as simple as cooking a healthy meal or spending a little enjoyable time with someone you love. Putting effort into the things that matter most to you will help you utilize and reserve your energy in ways that will bring out the best in you.

MAKE CHOICES THAT FEEL RIGHT TO YOU. Don't make promises that you can't keep, or promises that feel unsettling to you. This can mean saying "no" to things that take up too much of your time and energy, or that sacrifice your personal happiness. Respect and honor your time and yourself first. Saying “no” at times can result in having more time, love and energy available for others. LIVE AND LET LIVE. Since we are all different, your choices and mine will not always align. Don't get distracted in a negative way by the uniqueness of other people. Bless the diversity of others, as life would be so boring without it!

THE LIST MAGAZINE 917.559.7821

Ikigai You’re probably thinking, “What does that mean?” Simply put, it’s a Japanese term for the concept of finding your purpose. I have always believed I had a purpose on this earth. I feel it in my dedication to my family and friends, to my profession, to both the physical gym itself and the dedicated community that inhabits it, in my devotion to running, long walks, cooking… I can name so many things that bring me joy and purpose. In the last few years, I have become so much more focused on what I want to translate to others: caring, listening, loving, learning, and sharing, to name a few. This focus has brought my teaching to a whole new level. I’ve come to understand that finding time to do things you enjoy without guilt or outside disturbances is critical to your well-being. In the past, I had no concept of sitting still; even the idea of becoming a better version of me wasn’t something I thought of often. I simply went through the motions without thinking of their purpose. When we reopened the gym, after the long, difficult period of not knowing when or even if we would reopen, I found my stretch classes to be one of the most important aspects of my ikigai. Finding that space and seeing my students feel so rewarded through the simple process of meditation and relaxation has been eye-opening. Years ago, if someone said I would be teaching stretch classes and find them truly transformative, I would have said, “No way; stretching is boring”, or “I don’t see the point of relaxing for an extended period of time.” I’m sure I would have said they’re not for me. I was so wrong. These classes have helped me focus and feel even stronger in my strength classes and everyday life.Give yourself the time and opportunity to find your ikigai; whatever that passion is, nourish it, embrace it, share it. I think you will be so happy with the results…I know it has changed me for the better. - Corinne Brown, Owner/Instructor of Fitness Incentive, Babylon Village

Most of our challenges and anxiety stems from thoughts that we carry around with us every moment. These thoughts can cloud our ability to be happy because they distract us from being present in our lives. These days, our lives are more complicated and distracted than ever before. Like an overloaded outlet, our minds can be overwhelmed and our energy depleted. In yoga, “Chitta Vrittti” is a term that refers to this mind-chatter or “monkey-mind”. Practicing yoga helps stop these fluctuations of the mind because it slows our thoughts so we can have a more peaceful and watchful awareness. This can lead to long-term self-acceptance and happiness. The physical perks of yoga are strength and flexibility, but don’t underestimate how connecting with your body can benefit the mind. Yoga is both a workout and a work-in. - The Welcome Mat Yoga and Wellness Studio

Introducing Dr. Kaitlyn Clarke, DC, CNS As South Bay M&W’s chiropractor, Dr. Clarke received both her Doctor of Chiropractic and Master’s degree in Clinical Nutrition from NY Chiropractic College, then continued her education at the Institute for Functional Medicine. Practicing for over a decade, her experience is vast, and professional expertise spans a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. Her multi-modal approach is unique, with the goal of identifying the root of the problem in order to correct it quickly and effectively. She addresses whole-body health by utilizing many different techniques, such as Active Release Technique, paired with chiropractic adjustments. This allows her to create a custom solution to heal the body of pain and ailments by treating the root cause. In addition to traditional wellness services, South Bay M&W also offers specialty programs in Women’s Health and Functional Medicine + Nutrition. The Women’s Health program is designed to address conditions specific to women that occur throughout the various stages of their lives, such as preconception and fertility, pregnancy and postpartum, as well as other hormonal challenges like PMS, PCOS, thyroid issues and menopause. Having personally struggled with infertility, Dr. Clarke is as empathetic as she is knowledgeable, and feels strongly about being a resource to help other women going through this same difficult struggle. Using a combination of traditional medicine, acupuncture, supplements and a functional nutrition approach, she hopes to successfully treat women who are dealing with infertility, just as she did for herself.

Introducing Dr. Gregory Reinhardt, DPT Dr. Reinhardt, DPT, is South Bay M&W's head Physical Therapist. He received his Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Connecticut, and his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Temple University before beginning his career at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in Manhattan. His 14 years of experience as a top physical therapist at HSS provided him the opportunity to work with various orthopedic conditions, including everything from major surgeries and joint replacements to tendinitis and minor strains. A HSS Certified Hip Therapist, Dr. Reinhardt also holds a certification in golf - his specialty - which he uses to evaluate his patients’ athletic mechanics. Recognized for his expertise in treating the golfer, he was asked to consult on three American Physical Therapy Association golf monographs, and was also the leading provider for developing the HSS Golf Portal. After HSS, Dr. Reinhardt went on to become the Director of Wellness at Hudson Wellness in Manhattan. It was here that he learned the value of working together with fellow health care providers to fully enhance patient care.

South Bay Movement & Wellness is a new and welcome addition to our south shore communities. Founded in 2020 by local residents Dr. Kaitlyn Clarke, DC, CNS, and Dr. Gregory Reinhardt, DPT, South Bay M&W was conceived with the goal of integrating comprehensive wellness services all under one roof.

“Managing illness or injury is difficult enough; navigating various providers, appointments and insurance should not be an additional ordeal,” stated Dr. Clarke, “our goal is to uncomplicate the process.” As a patient at South Bay Movement & Wellness, you have the unique opportunity to meet with multiple practitioners on the same day. This means you can see a chiropractor, physical therapist, massage therapist, nutritionist and acupuncturist all during the same appointment. “It was important to us to bring our passion for what we do to our community. We wanted to create a beautiful and welcoming space for all of Long Island to come to heal,” stated Dr. Reinhardt. “Providing a quality, patient-centered experience requires a team of compassionate, knowledgeable providers all working in conjunction to achieve the same goal for each patient. That’s what we do here. We take the time to listen, evaluate and treat our patients, be it with an individual or team effort. We do not have aids on staff here; our patients work directly with the doctors and health care professionals throughout the entirety of their visits. We establish relationships with our patients, we are here for them and their family members for care they may need over the course of their lifetime.”

T HE CENT ER With the patient in mind, from the peaceful sitting rooms to the world-class fitness area, the 3,200 sq. ft. facility was designed to be a place where both dynamic and tranquil therapies can be provided, effectively and comfortably. The fitness and physical therapy space is a combination of treatment tables, state-of-the-art equipment and functional turf available for athletes receiving physical therapy as well as those in the Enhanced Performance Training program. The treatment areas have separate spacious rooms where patients meet with the chiropractors, acupuncturists, nutritionists, functional medicine practitioners, and massage therapists. Intended to promote healing, these private rooms are calm and relaxing. • • • • • • • • •

B O DY PA M P E R I N G

More than Just ‘Me Time’ B E N E F I T S O F B O DY PA M P E R I N G So much attention and maintenance goes to our face and neck…you’d think our skin actually ends at our shoulders. Cleansing, exfoliating, massaging and moisturizing your entire body should be an integral part of any beauty regime…plus it’s a perfect opportunity for some R & R. A good full body massage is absolute bliss, and we are all in need of one! At surface level, it feels amazing. Beneath the surface, massage relaxes the muscles, relieves stress, and improves circulation of the blood and the lymphatic system, which releases toxins from the body into the blood - that’s why it’s so important to drink plenty of water after having a massage. But keeping a regularly scheduled massage appointment is more than just ‘me time’; when performed consistently, massage therapy can contribute to your entire body’s sense of overall well-being. Most spas also offer a wide variety of body scrubs, wraps, and masques designed to exfoliate, cleanse, and moisturize skin on the body. Similar to massage, these treatments effect not just the outside but also the inside of the body. Glistening skin, smooth and hydrated down to the toes is not the only benefit; exfoliation techniques stimulate the lymphatic system encouraging and improving detoxification as well. We called on Carrie Ann Parker, Lead Massage Therapist at Drew Patrick Spa, to tell us a little about some of the massage and body treatments they offer... “Our Custom Massage is beyond a doubt best suited for everyone, whether they are here simply to relax and de-stress, or incorporating massage therapy as part of their triathlon training,” said Carrie. “Before beginning the massage, the therapist and client discuss any issues or concerns that need to be addressed. This allows the therapist to personalize the experience by adjusting the focus of the treatment using modalities and techniques tailored to the client based on their needs. Our therapists may utilize warm stones and oils, as well as gentle stretching techniques during the massage. We also offer a CBD Massage, which mirrors the Custom Massage, but begins with the addition of CBD oil applied to tension points and areas of chronic and acute inflammation in the joints and muscles. The CBD oil helps to ease aches and pains by decreasing inflammation. Extra attention is given to the problematic areas with the CBD oil, which is extremely soothing as it is massaged into joints and muscles.” “But, if you’re looking for something special to pamper the skin and body,” continued Carrie, “the Champagne Mud Wrap offered at Drew Patrick is amazing. This detoxifying thalassotherapy treatment

begins with the body being painted in self-heating seaweed mud. The mud, which is rich in minerals, stimulates the release of unhealthy accumulations in the digestive, circulatory and lymphatic systems. As the mud gradually heats up, gentle bubbles effervesce as oxygen is released. While the client is wrapped and relaxing in the warm mud, the therapist performs a soothing scalp massage. The mud gets rinsed off in an invigorating 6 jet shower, then a rich finishing lotion is massaged into the skin to lock in moisture. This luxurious treatment must be experienced to truly be appreciated. A word of caution, it is not appropriate for anyone with an iodine or shellfish allergy.” The benefits of massage and body treatments extend beyond the skin’s surface. Consider scheduling them as a regular part of your beauty & wellness maintenance, and not just an occasional indulgence. It is truly time well spent.

MUST KNOW

HAPPINESS

The Pursuit of Happiness Happiness isn't about reaching a destination or achieving a goal; it's about enjoying the journey that is life. When we think of happiness, we typically think of things that bring us immediate pleasure - a delicious meal, a favorite movie or book, or a relaxing day on vacation. These pleasures do bring happiness, but only temporarily; true happiness, or life satisfaction, works a bit differently. Happiness is not about what you do in life or about objective wealth; it's about your perspective, and about how you react to things that happen around you. Studies have found that happy people had certain traits and habits in common. With practice, these can all be part of your daily lifestyle. These strategies won’t just improve your happiness, they’ll also make you a better person. Pick those that resonate with you and have fun with them.

ADAPTABILITY. One thing is for certain: everything changes. Life is far more unpredictable than most of us would like. Events range from irritating to devastating. The happiest people in life don’t focus on the interference or the obstacle; they focus on finding the best way around it. They Traits are adaptable. They don't worry about life's unpredictability, and they aren't as stressed when something major comes up. They simply find another way to move forward. Hurt your leg jogging? Give yoga a try. More often than not, we take the bad and let it hold us back when it doesn’t have to. Happy people are happy because they take their failures in stride, not because they don’t fail.

of

thinking about the future. It doesn't matter whether these thoughts are positive or negative; you could think very positively about the future, but if you aren't focused on the present moment, you aren't going to be happy in the present moment. It's important to remember the past, but it's harmful to dwell Especially in it… just like it's important to plan for the future, but harmful to obsess over it.

HAPPY

SELF-CONFIDENCE. Having faith in your own abilities makes you less stressed; you spend less time worrying about whether or not you're good enough to accomplish something and more time actively trying to accomplish it. Confident people tend to perform better when facing obstacles and experience less stress overall. Building confidence can be difficult, especially in adulthood, but it is possible to train yourself to be more confident by practicing positive thinking and remembering your skills instead of your faults.

PEOPLE

GRATITUDE. Gratitude is essential for happiness. You have to truly appreciate everything you have in life in order to be satisfied with it. If you don't feel grateful, you're always going to be looking for more, no matter how much you already have. You could make minimum wage or a six-figure salary and still constantly lust after more instead of being grateful you have a job. Express your gratitude, openly and often, for all the good things in your life. HUMOR. Truly happy people are typically able to find humor in almost anything, including themselves. They aren't afraid to laugh out loud when they think something is funny. Laughing is shown to be beneficial for both your emotional and physical health. It releases endorphins, helps you relax, and helps you manage stress better. Even the simple act of smiling can have some of these effects. So laugh often and smile whenever you can, and surround yourself with others who do the same. INTANGIBLE VALUES. Happy people aren't obsessed with tangible rewards or destinations. They aren't worried about getting to a certain position, making a certain amount of money, or having certain material things. They're more concerned with the intangible parts of life: friendship, family, and fun. They prioritize experiences over possessions and don't try to measure their lives in terms of how much wealth they have. So consider your values carefully and examine how you really feel about them. PRESENT FOCUS. Happy people tend to live in the moment. They aren't preoccupied with things they've done in the past, or constantly

Healthy Habits of Happy People EXERCISE. Within five minutes of cardiovascular exercise, you can feel happier! Once you get moving, your brain releases serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. These make you feel good. Happy people schedule regular exercise and follow through on it because they know it pays huge dividends for both body and mood. GET ENOUGH SLEEP. When you sleep, your brain literally recharges, removing toxic proteins that accumulate during the day as byproducts of normal neuronal activity. This ensures that you wake up alert and clear-headed. Happy people make sleep a priority, because it makes them feel great and they know how lousy they look and feel when they’re sleep deprived. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE PEOPLE. Happiness is contagious. Surrounding yourself with happy people builds confidence and stimulates creativity…plus it’s flat-out fun. Hanging around negative people has the opposite effect – best to avoid that crowd. Connecting with others who radiate positivity and have similar interests will excite and energize you.

Find three hobbies you love: one to make you money, one to keep you in shape, and one to be creative. - Johnny FD

MUST KNOW

R O O M T O R E T R E AT

A Room To Retreat To Having a private, personal sanctuary is a must-have these days, especially if your household has more than one of you working from home. While working remotely can be very appealing, it can also present some significant challenges. Struggling with the overall lack of structure has proved to be a significant stressor for many. Multiply this exponentially if, in addition, there are also young children at home. Stepping away to a quiet and relaxing space is a wonderful way to decompress and recharge. Even if space is limited, it is easy to create a comfortable, cozy corner somewhere in your home as a welcome refuge for reading, meditating, or just some much needed ‘me time’.

HE SPACE

MAKE IT YOUR OWN

You will want to find a space in your home, be it an entire room, a section of your office, a corner of your living or bedroom, or even an attic or outdoor area that you can call your own. Your space should be secluded and away from high-traffic areas, where you can unplug and disappear for a bit. A place without noise. Make sure it is free from distractions and will provide you a break from your job-related work, daily responsibilities, family members, and/or roommates.

Your space should be uncluttered and free of electronics (except for music) with lighting that creates a warm and a welcoming environment. If there is room, a big comfy chair with a footstool or ottoman that you can rest your feet on is a good idea. A large overstuffed floor cushion can do the trick if space is tight. Most importantly, it should be a reflection of you, with personal touches that bring calm vibes to help you relax. Things to consider having in your space: • • • • • •

favorite books, magazines and/or a journal natural elements such as plants, rocks, shells, fresh flowers, etc. family photos and artwork fragrance for instant aromatherapy soft instrumental music (no lyrics!) - or enjoy the silence a clock within eyesight is also a good idea to keep you mindful of your time

DESTRESS, RELAX & RECHARGE

Being by yourself with no distractions gives you time to unwind, gather your thoughts, and recharge; it gives you the opportunity to shift your focus and be creative. As a result, you may find you are more productive and able to be more present and focused when you return to your world.

Fill tacos with slaw mixture and salmon. Spritz with lime. Serve immediately.

To grill patties:

Chill patties for at least 30 minutes prior to grilling so they hold together. Brush grill generously with oil so patties don’t stick. Heat grill to 450 degrees. Cook patties undisturbed under covered grill for 3 minutes; flip and cook an additional 3 minutes on other side.

RECIPES

Sicilian Eggplant Caponata By Ellen Fava You'll love the combination of savory, sweet & sour flavors in this creamy eggplant caponata recipe. Serve as an appetizer atop crostini or slices of crusty Italian bread, as a meatless main course, or next to chicken or fish as a side dish. A great make-ahead dish, it is best served at room temperature.

IN GR ED IEN TS

• 1 large eggplant - (I prefer not to peel the eggplant, but you can peel it if you prefer) • 2/3 cup olive oil • 1 medium sized onion, chopped • 1 large celery stalk, chopped • 1 sweet red pepper, diced

• 3/4 cup crushed tomatoes • 1/2 cup mixed olives, chopped (Kalamata and green) • 2 Tbsp. capers • 3 Tbsp. red wine vinegar • 1/2 Tbsp. honey or 2 Tbsp. white sugar • salt & pepper to taste

D IR EC TIO N S

1. Rinse eggplant and cut into 1/2-inch cubes. 2. Heat 1/2 of the olive oil in a large frying pan; add eggplant and cook over moderate heat until eggplant softens and turns golden. When done, remove eggplant from pan and set aside. 3. Add remaining olive oil to pan with the onion. Saute onion for about 4 - 5 minutes until it softens. 4. Add celery and red pepper and continue to cook until soft. 5. Stir in olives and capers. Add the crushed tomato, red wine vinegar and honey. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Lentil Soup Lentil soup is as delicious as it is healthy! Lentils are nutritious, rich in minerals, low in fat, and high in protein and fibre. They are a terrific meat-alternative and vegetarian source of protein.

6. Cook over moderate heat for approximately 8 minutes, until it starts to bubble. 7. Return eggplant to pan and mix to combine. Continue to cook for another 3-4 minutes then remove from heat. Serve immediately or, when caponata has cooled, place in glass jars and refrigerate.

ING RE DI E N TS

1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. 2. Lower the heat to medium, add the onion, carrots, and celery. Saute for about 10 minutes until soft. 3. Add the garlic and saute for a 1 – 2 minutes. 4. Increase heat to medium-high, add white wine and cook for an additional minute or so. 5. Add the tomatoes, lentils, stock, bay leaf, dried thyme, basil leaves, red pepper flakes and salt and pepper to taste. 6. Bring to a boil, then cover and turn heat down to low and simmer for approximately 30 - 40 minutes or until lentils are soft. Adjust the consistency of the soup by adding water. 7. Remove bay leaf and taste and adjust seasonings. 8. Blend soup with an immersion or hand blender for just a few seconds to gently puree the soup. 9. Garnish with a drizzle of olive oil, chopped parsley and cheese. Serve with warm rustic bread.
