We are thrilled to have our summer issue filled with lots of things you CAN do!! After more than a year of pandemic constraints, the return-to-normal is becoming a wonderful reality. We are very excited to be able to enjoy those things we missed so dearly… this summer is truly going to be extra special. Traveler’s wanderlust may be stronger than ever for many of us; yet we hope to inspire you to plan a staycation right here on our island this summer. There are so many diverse attractions to explore on Long Island: from our famed beaches spanning from Montauk and the Hamptons to Fire Island and Long Beach; to historic Gold Coast Mansions, awardwinning vineyards, eclectic dining, boutique shopping, and so many charming downtowns perfect for summer strolling. We’ve compiled collections of some of our favorite summertime things to do including planning a party at home with all the people you love. Grab your calendars - this issue is filled with live music events and local happenings that all have resumed. In our spring issue we celebrated women, but we love our LI men too! In keeping with tradition, our summer issue spotlights local men’s shops that we think you’ll enjoy checking out. SALON EDEN
Our spring issue celebrated Long Island ladies, so it’s only fair to shine a spotlight on Long Island men this summer! With that in mind, we spoke with Kane, owner and Master Hair Stylist of Salon Eden, one of the best full-service salons in our area that caters to men, women, and children.
ABOUT KANE A native of England, Kane started hairdressing in 1983 when he served as an apprentice to the world renowned hairdresser, Vidal Sassoon, in posh Sloane Square, London. He further honed his skills working alongside the famed “Leonard of Mayfair”, hairdresser to the stars, celebrities, and rich and famous, which provided Kane the opportunity to work on movie sets and TV commercials.
THE STAFF The staff at Salon Eden is made up of highly-trained master stylists who participate in continuing education with the goal of becoming one of the best in the business. The foundation of Salon Eden’s success is rooted in education; their staff is up to date with all of the latest techniques, trends and products in hair color and specialty treatments.
LADIES & GENTS “We service all aspects of women’s hair…cuts, smoothing systems, fashion color, balayage, corrective color, gray touch ups. Your hair is in good hands here,” said Kane.
A job offer in New York brought Kane to the USA in 1991. “It was supposed to be for two years,” Kane said, “but I started a family. I was here to stay. Upon settling in Islip, I knew it was time for me to start my own business. In 2008, I opened Salon Eden.”
Popular with the gentlemen, a large percentage of Salon Eden’s clients are male. “We do see a lot of students, but the largest portion of the men we see are discerning successful professionals,” stated Kane. “We cater to every man’s hair styling requirements; we are able to offer traditional barbering techniques along with nontraditional longer

Designed to park-and-pour, mobile cocktail bars are a new concept that bring professional bartending services right to you. They are fully equipped with drinkware, cocktail napkins, garnishes, mixers, and an abundance of ice. Prior to your event, they consult with you to discuss the drink menu, where you want the trailer parked, and all other details. They even put together a shopping list for you to purchase all the booze you’ll need for your bash.
Limoncello Collins Easy to serve, you can prepare a pitcher of these delicious cocktails in advance. FO R A P ITC HER (about 8 drinks)
• 16 oz. Limoncello liqueur • 12 oz. gin (can be made with vodka if preferred) • 8 oz. fresh lemon juice • 16 oz. chilled club soda • 2 dozen thin lemon slices • Mint sprigs for garnish D IR EC TIO N S
Pour the Limoncello, gin and lemon juice into a pitcher, cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Pre-garnish 8 glasses with three very thin lemon slices pressed against the inside of each glass. Put glasses in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to serve, fill glasses with ice, stir the pitcher contents then fill each glass 3/4 of the way, topping off with about 2 oz. of club soda. Garnish with mint sprigs.

JUST FOR THE GRILL OF IT 3 Festive Party Bites to Impress Your Guests by LI Chef Brittany Middlemiss
I love to create eclectic food that looks pretty, tastes delicious, and is simple to make. The idea is to make entertaining more fun with less stress. These recipes are perfect as an appetizer or a lite bite for any summer gathering. To save time, some parts of these recipes can be prepared beforehand, then completed when you are ready to grill. The goal is to spend less time cooking and more time enjoying your party! Note: my recipes do not have precise measurements; feel free to add however much you like of any of the ingredients. Interpret these recipes loosely and alter them to your taste, it’s impossible to get them wrong!
Grilled Avocado & Shrimp Ceviche
Grilled Naan Bread with Truffle Honey, Peaches and Burrata
ING RE DI E N TS

1 lb. cooked shrimp* Juice from 2 limes Avocados Cherry tomatoes, sliced • Chopped cilantro

Grilled corn on the cob Salt & pepper Olive oil Mexican Cotija cheese (available in most supermarkets)
*This recipe can also be made as a marinade using raw shrimp, which should be grilled on the BBQ before being served and consumed. FO R TH E SH RI M P C E V I C HE
Remove corn kernels from cob. Place the shrimp, tomatoes, cilantro, and corn in a bowl. Pour the lime juice over the shrimp mixture. Add salt & pepper to taste. Gently toss to coat. Cover your ceviche and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or up to 8 hours. Best served chilled or at room temperature. G RILLI N G T H E AVO CA D O
Open the avocado and remove the pit. Lightly oil avocado and season with salt and pepper. Place flesh side down on hot grill until you get those beautiful grill marks. FINAL ST E P
Remove from grill and fill the inside with your ceviche. Crumble on the Mexican Cotija cheese and enjoy!

Grill the naan bread until nice and toasted. Top with arugula, olive oil and salt. Slice your peaches and place them on the grill just until golden brown. Slice burrata and arrange over the arugula. Add grilled peaches and drizzle with truffle honey - I added some of the leftover grilled corn as well - no food waste!
Whipped Herbed Goat Cheese Dip with Cherries and Grilled French Baguette IN GR ED IEN TS
• French bread or baguette • Herbed goat cheese D IR EC TIO N S
• Sour cream • Cherries • Fresh basil
• Olive oil • Salt & pepper
Place herbed goat cheese in a food processor, add 1 tablespoon of sour cream and a splash of water until you get a spreadable consistency. Slice French bread on a diagonal and lightly grill - watch carefully as bread grills quickly! Slice up cherries and fresh basil. Place your dip in a bowl and top with the cherries, basil, olive oil, salt & pepper. Serve with the grilled bread.

Strawberry Frosé
If you are a lover of rosé wine, you have to try this Strawberry Frosé recipe! Frosé, you say? What exactly is frosé? Frosé is a mashup of a frozen cocktail and a quintessential delicate summer wine. There’s nothing tastier than a perfectlypink summertime-slushy wine drink. ING RE DI E N TS
• 1 750 ml bottle rosé wine • 1 ½ cups halved strawberries with tops removed (about 8 large berries) • 1 Tbsp. simple syrup (recipe below) D IRECT I ON S
Using a blender, blend the berries, wine and simple syrup together until smooth. Strain the ingredients into a covered baking dish and freeze for 6 hours or overnight. The alcohol in the mixture will keep it a slushy texture instead of freezing solid. To serve, place the blended mixture into a glass, then top with a splash of rosé wine. If desired, garnish with strawberries.

It’s easiest to whip up the frosé recipe the night before your gathering, then serve the day of. Frosé can also be made in the morning for evening entertaining. The blended wine and strawberry mixture can be kept in a sealed container in the freezer for a few days before serving it - but don’t leave it frozen for too long…the fresh strawberries and rosé wine will lose some of their flavor once frozen.
Simple Syrup Recipe
Making this easy cocktail sweetener requires boiling equal parts sugar and water…that’s it! Couldn’t be easier. Although there are some versions that use a 2:1 ratio of sugar to water, we stick with the 1:1 ratio for our cocktails. It gives just the right amount of sweetness. Bring it Home: Pick up the ingredients and make a batch! Try it Out: Salt & Barrel and other restaurants have their own variations of this delicious summer drink. Try one during Happy Hour!

The 1888 Oyster Sloop, Priscilla, offers public sails on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. All sails are two hours and depart from the Snapper Inn in Oakdale. Dine & sail packages, in conjunction with The Snapper Inn, are also available. Stunning Seaside Retreat Renovation This West Islip waterfront home was the location of our most recent design project. After a complete renovation, it was transformed into a bright and airy coastal chic open concept living space.
The Consultation Our initial consultation with the client was a meet and greet in her home to view the space, get to know her needs, and analyze how we were going to make improvements. I like to go through the client’s “wish list” with them and walk through what could be possible. While there, we took measurements and “before” photos. Our client had an open mind to our ideas and was willing to change the entire space to a whole new layout and design.
Job Scope This project was a complete gut job. In the kitchen we ripped out the flooring and a wall to accommodate the new design plan. Lighting and plumbing work also needed relocating.

We updated the living room, dining room and master bedroom with new furnishings and window treatments. The kitchen was completely redone with new appliances, stone tops, lighting, and cabinetry. The fireplace stucco was refaced with porcelain tile that coordinated with the new design plan.
In creating this design, we totally changed the way she was functioning in these spaces. We relocated the dining room from its original location beside the kitchen to behind the living room, which now opened it up to a scenic water view. The living room area was redesigned to center around the fireplace. We chose to set the TV above the fireplace mantle, making the living room a welcoming space for watching TV or just relaxing. We not only changed the layout, we completely updated her old Tuscanstyle concept into a fresh, newly revitalized transitional space using soft color tones, high performance fabrics, stylish furnishings and sleek window treatments that framed her perfect view of the Great South Bay. Our client, a widowed woman who has been living in this home for 25 years, needed a fresh start with a new plan. In all of the 25 years in this home she never considered the living room as a space to relax in and watch TV. We knew that situation needed to be corrected…it was a waste of good space. We now have the space grounded correctly with the living room as center stage so she can entertain friends, unwind, or better yet, enjoy her water front view!

Patriotic Party Pitcher of Watermelon Margaritas No backyard BBQ or party is complete without fresh, sweet watermelon. A summertime favorite, adding it to an ice cold pitcher of Margaritas is bound to be a crowd pleaser. The patriotic fruit skewers will add a little spark to any celebration. Enjoy these all summer long! IN GR ED IEN TS For a Pitcher (5 – 6 servings)
• 1 ½ cups Tequila Blanco (also called Plato or Silver tequila) • 1/2 cup orange liqueur, such as Triple Sec or Cointreau • 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
• 4 cups watermelon, chopped and deseeded • Simple syrup or agave nectar (optional for added sweetness)

Wooden fruit skewers Star-shaped cookie cutter 3 – 4 large watermelon slices Fresh blueberries
• Kosher or sea salt (or any high quality coarse salt) • Lime wedges • Ice

Place tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, seedless watermelon and a splash of simple syrup (optional) into a blender and give it a good whirl (this may require two batches depending on the size of your blender). After blending, strain mixture through a fine mesh strainer (to remove watermelon solids) into a pitcher, pressing the solids to get out as much liquid as possible. Cover the pitcher and place in refrigerator.

1 bottle dry white wine, chilled 1 pound fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced 2 cups fresh blueberries 1 cup fresh raspberries 1/2 cup brandy or orange liqueur (such as Grand Marnier or Cointreau) • 1 bottle sparkling white wine, chilled (such as cava or champagne) • 3 – 4 Granny Smith apples, sliced then cut into stars using star-shaped cookie cutter • Ice D IRECT I ON S
1. Add white wine, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and orange liqueur (or brandy) to a large pitcher. Gently stir; then cover and refrigerate for 1 - 4 hours* so that the flavors can meld. 2. When ready to serve the sangria, add the sparkling white wine, apples and a handful of ice into the pitcher. Stir gently then serve immediately over ice and enjoy! *Note: Chilling Time: Heads up - the longer the sangria sits, the redder it will likely become. If you prefer a whiter sangria, we recommend serving it immediately.

Patriotic Garnish
Cut watermelon into round slices - ideally you want the thickness of the slices to match the depth of your cookie cutter. Use your star cookie cutter to cut out stars from the watermelon rounds. Slide about 4-5 blueberries onto the pointed end of each skewer, then add the watermelon stars on top. Place fruit skewers on tray, cover with waxed paper and store in refrigerator until ready to serve. When ready to serve, rim your Margarita glasses (optional - but here is where you get the white!) with coarse Kosher or sea salt. Sprinkle a good amount of the salt onto a plate or shallow bowl. Make a small slit in lime wedge and run it around the tops of your glasses to wet the edges, then dip the tops of the glasses into the salt to coat the rims. Fill glasses with ice, then pour the prepared Margaritas into the glasses and garnish with fruit skewer. Cheers! When it comes to cocktailing, never forget the garnish! That final touch completes the look and often adds a flourish of flavor.

Orange wine has a tart, nutty flavor that most white wines don’t have. On the palate, they have an IPA-like tang to them that feels dry and bold. GRILLING TIPS
Top Grilling Tips 5 tips that will elevate anyone’s grilling skills!
1. Don’t Always Go for the Grade.
USDA Prime Beef is great if available and your budget allows, but if not, your best bet is to select a steak based on the color and intramuscular marbling (the white flecks throughout the muscle). Beef should be a nice rose-colored red when is out of the package, and more marbling = more fat = more flavor.
2. Prep like a Pro.
Allow steak to come to room temperature by removing from the refrigerator 30-60 minutes before you intend to cook it. This sitting time allows the muscle fibers in the meat to relax, which enhances tenderness. After removing from packaging, pat steak dry before seasoning.
3. Make Your Steak the Star.
When you have great quality, you don’t need to overdo the preparation. Brush your steak with olive oil, and generously salt with Pink Himalayan Salt (our favorite), but kosher or sea salt works well too. Do not use iodized table salt! Give steak a sprinkle of salt again after it is cooked, adding some coarsely ground black pepper as well.
4. Indirect Heat.
Top-tip to achieve the perfect medium-rare steak: to lock in the juices and create a nice crust, start by searing both sides of the steak for about 1-2 mins. (depending on thickness) at a super-hot high-temperature, then transfer the steak to a section of the grill that does not have the flame directly under it. Let the steak cook to 120-130 degrees with minimal flipping. If you don’t have a meat thermometer, use the touch test: gently press the steak with your finger; it should still be soft to the touch, but it will give you slight bounce back when you press on it.

Let it Rest.
Let the meat rest once it is removed from the heat. Place a loosely tented piece of aluminum foil over the steak, then wait about half the cooking time before cutting. This rest time allows the natural juices to redistribute throughout the meat, and the muscle fibers to relax as the temperature lowers. Your patience will pay off with a more tender and juicy steak.
