Noble Savage Barbershop is an upscale, old-world class gentleman's barber shop that offers today's progressive man a haven to unwind, relax and experience the latest trends in the art of grooming in a masculine, lounge-style atmosphere.

The barber shop is a sacred space for men; it should provide an environment of care, comfort, and style. Newly opened in Bay Shore, Noble Savage Barbershop was designed to offer luxury grooming and spa services for men who want more than just a cut.

OUR VISION

The original idea for Noble Savage was actually conceived over fifteen years ago by two of the partners who were co-workers for many years. Working in the service industry, they both were well aware that good customer service was invaluable. While they enjoyed a good visit to the barber, they’d often agree they felt the overall experience was lacking; there was no place a guy could go to get a manicure/pedicure, facial, or his hair dyed and feel comfortable while having it done. The idea of a one-stop-shop for men was appealing to them. Discussions about one day opening an improved, full-service barber shop that offered salon-style amenities lead to the development of a mutual vision: to reinvigorate the barber shop space as one where men can come for a haircut, shave, spa treatment or other grooming service. The vision took shape when they met their third partner… and the dream soon became a reality. While each partner brought something different to the table, the trio all shared a common vision. In fact, all three

were very much involved in the concept, design and building of the place.

THE EXPERIENCE Noble Savage Barbershop is a gentleman’s retreat.

“It’s a place to relax and unwind,” mentions Cesar Torres, one of the partners. “It’s a place one can come and escape the day-to-day madness.” Back in the day, a barber shop was known not only for a haircut and a shave, but also as a place to fraternize with friends and chew the fat. At Noble Savage, gentlemen can experience the atmosphere of a traditional, classic barber shop, and also enjoy the convenience and luxury of salon services in those surroundings. Boldly redefining

today’s barber shop, Noble Savage has kicked open the salon door, making services that are typically available to women now accessible to men, and provided in an environment that men feel completely comfortable in. The idea that facials, hair coloring, manicures and pedicures are just for women is a thing of the past. Men want to look their best; more and more men are scheduling services to achieve just that. Recognizing that there were more salon services and spa treatments they wanted to be able to offer customers, the trio decided to partner with a well-established medical spa and wellness clinic. All Noble Savage spa treatments are administered on premises by professional, licensed aestheticians.

“To make a fine gentleman, several trades are required, but chiefly a barber.”

Eat Beautifully

- OLIVER GOLDSMITH

In addition to their various benefits, facials, manicures, pedicures and massages are just simply relaxing. They do it all…even teeth whitening. Walk in like a savage, walk out like a nobleman. To help eliminate common frustrations among many barber shops, Noble Savage has a hostess at the front desk who greets customers and will happily offer assistance with selecting services. Customers are also offered espresso, tea, a soft drink, or, for gentlemen of legal age, an alcoholic drink at their time of service. Cocktails aside, Noble Savage is absolutely family-friendly and also caters to small savages. It is fast becoming quite the hot spot for stylish haircuts for boys of all ages. And, of course, women are also always welcome.

THE VIBE

The shop, situated neatly between Tullulah’s and Mitsui Japanese Restaurant on Fourth Avenue, has a “Dodge City in the late 1800’s” vibe to it, with their name ornately written in bold black letters across a clean wooden plank background.

The interior is reminiscent of an old-time look, with leather upholstery and wrought iron décor. Exposed brick and a striking image of the Brooklyn Bridge emit a more sleek, urbane atmosphere, which complements the old-time feel. There are plans to add a lounge area to the space where customers can enjoy a complimentary cocktail or beverage prior to, or after, a scheduled service. Fitted with comfortable seating and large screen TVs, it will be a place to relax, read a magazine, or just share conversation. Of course, characteristic of any worthy barber shop, there’s no shortage of personal advice to be offered when needed from this fellowship. They pride themselves on creating a community-friendly place, where customers feel more like family, and look forward to visiting regularly. “We are proud to be a part of such a vibrant community and look forward to building longlasting relationships with our customers,” remarks Torres.

As every gentleman knows, it’s ladies first, and so it was, our last issue celebrated women. Welcome, ladies and gents, to our summer issue… this one we dedicate to the guys. We had lots of fun working on this issue, speaking to all our local businesses with our Long Island men in mind. We learned about the many quality products and services that are available to men. A little fashion, new BMW models, coastal breweries, music venues…the list goes on. I’m pretty confident that you will find something that grabs you as you flip through the pages. We are excited for you to read our cover story about Noble Savage Barbershop, which is not just any barber shop, it’s a gentleman’s retreat. Our coastal magazine is committed to the neighboring towns surrounding the Great South Bay, and we love inspiring all our readers to enjoy living or visiting where we live. We have all the essentials for summer: beautiful beaches, dockside dining, charming downtowns, and most important, really nice people. In the summer, skin often gets darker while the hair becomes lighter; the sea gets bluer, music gets louder, drinks become colder. The Island we call home is at its best, and we are incredibly fortunate to enjoy island living. To all the men, women and children who live, play or work in our area, enjoy summer by the bay.

See you at the beach!

MUST KNOW

SPOTLIGHT ON ARGYLE GRILL & BARRIQUE KITCHEN

Best Friends & Partnerships While mixing friendship and business can be a recipe for disaster, some partnerships have all the right ingredients for success. Long-time friends and business partners of Argyle Grill and Barrique Kitchen and Wine Bar, Greg Bartolotta, Keith Hart, Dante Paganini & Billy Wolfe shared their story and secrets for success with us.

T H E L I S T : Can you tell us how long you’ve known each other and how you got together to start the business?

G R E G : We all go way back to the early 80’s working in the hospitality business. In 1990, a mutual friend introduced Keith and I. Back then, I was a partner in a nightclub in East Meadow. Billy was bartending at Uncle Sam’s/Spit night club in Levittown, where Keith was previously the promotional manager, and then selling roses in all the local night clubs. When Uncle Sam’s closed, Keith was looking for a place to store his roses at the end of the night. Every Friday and Saturday night between 2am-4am, Keith would meet 20 or so “Rose Girls” at my night club to store the remaining roses. Obviously, we spent many late nights together, and formed a friendship that has lasted a life time. Keith went on to manage John Anthony’s in Babylon, where he met Dante, who did the planning and design for both John Anthony’s and Coco’s in Huntington, and also reunited with Bill, who was bartending there. Fast forward to the late 90’s, Bill was living in Babylon Village and noticed a building on Deer Park Avenue that was for sale. It housed a bar called Stillman’s. Bill pitched the idea to Dante and Keith to purchase the building and put a new restaurant in the village. At the time, I still had the nightclub in East Meadow and was also partners in a restaurant called Hemingway’s in Wantagh. While visiting Babylon village, several times I noticed on any given night 10-20 people standing outside Kotobuki, the neighboring restaurant to Stillman’s, waiting for a table. It didn’t take long for me to realize this would be a great location for a restaurant…just the over flow from Kotobuki alone would be good business.

10 | THE LIST MAGAZINE

917.559.7821

Bill, Keith and Dante decided to purchase of the building. At the time, they were all greats in the night club industry, but had limited restaurant experience, although Bill was an incredible host and cook in his own right. Keith asked me if I would be interested in partnering with them and I jumped at the opportunity. In 1999 we purchased the building and built The Argyle Grill & Tavern. We will soon celebrate 20 years together

T H E L I S T : Why do you feel you make such good business partners?

G R E G : We each had a specialty. Dante, the great designer. Keith promotions. Bill hospitality. And myself, the business aspect of the restaurant. Our businesses would have never succeeded if it was not for each of our individual efforts and select skill sets. Our focus was to build a restaurant that had a great bar, not a bar that served good food. The restaurant was priority. We have gone on to open up two additional restaurants… Corbin and Reynolds located in Long Beach, which we sold in 2008, and Barrique Kitchen and Wine Bar in 2009 that we still own and operate along with The Argyle.

T H E L I S T : What’s your secret for keeping both the business and friendship successful?

G R E G : The success of The Argyle has changed all our lives. What makes a great team/partnership is how we have welcomed each of our individual successes over the course of this partnership. We were friends first, and will continue to be friends for the rest of our lives, sharing individual milestones over the years. We have always found a solution for every problem as a team. Effort on all the partners has never lacked, we all want each of us to succeed and be happy.

T H E L I S T : If you guys had a night out or some time off together, where would you go, what would you do?

G R E G : We love going to the Caribbean every winter… St. Martin, Anguilla and St. Bart’s. Locally, we chill on Fire Island, mostly Ocean Beach. We shoot over on Billy’s boat for dinner and sunset. Retiring 3 years ago, original partner Dante Paganini still remains good friends with the group.

SUMMER BREWS

Brewed by the Bay There’s been a boom of breweries opening on Long Island for the past decade. Our south shore is home to many great options for delicious craft beers. Here is our list of local hopped-up breweries to visit this summer. The craftsmen behind these establishments all share a passion for creating inventive products to be shared and enjoyed with our coastal communities.

GREAT SOUTH BAY BREWERY

25 Drexel Drive, Bay Shore | greatsouthbaybrewery.com HOURS: Monday, Wednesday &Thursday 3-10pm | Friday 3-11pm Saturday 12pm-12am | Sunday 12-8pm | Closed Tuesday VIBE: The big warehouse space of Great South Bay has two tasting rooms set right in front of the workshop, which resembles a chemistry lab full of vats, bottling machines, ingredients, speaker systems, and skateboards. It is immediately evident that the guys behind the sliding garage door that separates the spaces have a ton of fun while brewing. There is also an outdoor patio section complete with lots of tables, games, and stools to hang with friends and catch some sun. They accommodate big groups and intimate couples alike. Sports are broadcast from a projector bigger than any TV on Main Street, and the bartenders are friendly and will guide you to the right pour to match your mood. SEASONAL BREWS: Mango Starfish Blonde Ale made with fresh mango puree…crisp and refreshing for summer; Kiwi Kettle Sour, which is made with the Brewer’s Collective (a small independent brewery also located in Bay Shore); Shake Shake Senora, a Milkshake IPA brewed with bananas and coconuts; and of course their award winning Belgian Saison is always on tap. CHEWS: Food trucks are always on premises. They rotate, but you’ll find Chiddy’s Cheesesteaks, Royal Elite BBQ, and Big Black Food Truck on any given day. Owner’s favorite thing to eat with beer: “Definitely pizza.” BONUS: Monday is Game Night, Bingo on Wednesdays, and there’s Trivia on Thursdays. Weekends occasionally have live music. The brewery is also available to host private events, be it an intimate gathering or party of up to 90 guests.

DESTINATION UNKNOWN BEER COMPANY (DUBCO) One S. Chicago Avenue, Bay Shore destinationunknownbeercompany.com

HOURS: Monday - Thursday 4-8pm | Friday 4pm-10pm Saturday 12pm-10pm | Sunday 12pm-6pm VIBE: Away from the main road, it’s off the beaten path and feels like a “destination unsure” for any first-timers trying to find it. Inside the large industrial warehouse, the long wooden bar is a magnet for beer drinkers, and there are tables inside the intimate but inviting tasting room. The outdoor area is full of picnic tables and lights for night time. Pet-friendly, dogs are welcome, weather permitting, in their outdoor area. SEASONAL BREWS: Waikiki Wheat, a 4.8% wheat beer brewed with hibiscus flowers and guava make this a nice, easy drinking beach beer. Gilgo Gose, a fruity 5.0 % gose, is slightly tart with a mild salinity. Their base beer is brewed with different fruit additions; passion fruit and guava are popular ingredients for the summer batches. CHEWS: Enjoy Taco Tuesdays with the Big Black Food Truck, which is also on premises on Wednesdays, and rotating food trucks on Fridays and sometimes Saturday and Sunday. Owner’s favorite thing to eat with beer: “We love fresh seafood that is locally sourced. Lobster Rolls and fish tacos pair really well with

$1.50 OYSTERS

FOR ORDERS CALL 631-647-8818 www.saltandbarrel.com our summer series of beers.” BONUS: There is a Monday Night Corn Hole League, Tuesday Run Club and Trivia Night, and live acoustic music every Friday in the summer.

SECATOGUE BREWING CO.

to kegging. The result is a light refreshing beer that isn’t too fruity. They are currently crafting a Lavender Saison that’s nearly ready for tapping, and plenty of juicy New England IPAs are also in the works. CHEWS: The schedule rotates, but there is always a food truck on premises.

375 Union Blvd, West Islip secatoguebrewing.com

HOURS: Friday 3-10pm | Saturday 12-10pm | Sunday 12-6pm VIBE: Newly opened, it has a fresh, modern vibe with lots of tables and chic décor in the large open space, including a “school bus lounge”. The sleek white bar offers an abundance of tap beer as they are trying out new recipes. There’s an outdoor patio area and, weather permitting, they open the garage door that connects the indoor space to the patio for easy access to the food trucks. SEASONAL BREWS: Already popular are their Hibiscus IPA, Cosmic Blonde Ale, and Cosmic Berry Blast Ale, which begins with a base 4% blonde ale then raspberries and wild strawberries are added to the recipe prior

Owner’s favorite thing to eat with beer: “Without a doubt fish tacos.” BONUS: Secatogue is kid friendly until 7pm each night, and dog friendly in their outdoor area.

What Men Don’t Know About Yoga Interest in Yoga and Meditation has been rising steadily since the mid 90’s, with an uptick particularly in the last decade. Yet, it is still common to walk into some yoga classes and find mostly women. How do we explain this imbalance? Even today, popular culture portrays yoga as a superbendy experience where meditating hippies can touch their nose to their toes or contort themselves in some inconceivable way. Looks nice on Instagram, but not as practical as going for a jog, or as relaxing as staying in to watch the game. Despite this imbalance in classes, yoga has sparked the interest of many men these days. So, what should men know about yoga? We find that what keeps men from jumping on board is the misperception that yoga is just “passive stretching”; that yoga is not physically demanding, and that men feel they are not flexible enough. However, men who attend classes realize it is very physically challenging

SHOP of the YEAR

and requires a lot of strength. In addition to the numerous physical benefits, such as injury prevention, enhanced strength, weight loss, and better balance and flexibility, it is a push toward a better overall lifestyle. Still, there is another hidden secret: the ultimate goal of yoga is to take you to a place where you are comfortable in your own skin; where you become aware of how you react to life situations, and where you can find a path of inner peace. Yoga provides the movement and breath that creates detachment from stressful thoughts. It is a recipe for living a life which has no other requirement except to just show up. We are happy to have our studio filled with both men and women, not only as members but also as instructors. Want to challenge yourself guys? Give yoga a try!

R A G I N G G R A C E F U L LY

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall This is an Ocean Beach horror story that ended well, but people still talk about the screaming. It began innocently enough when a well-meaning husband decided to build an outdoor shower. Since he was a carpenter by trade, and highly motivated to showcase it to prospective clients, the wife knew the outdoor shower would be top notch and done in a timely fashion. She was thrilled, and showed him how much when he took a coffee break. When the last nail was driven in and the shower was completed, the husband thumped his chest with pride. The wife gave him his moment in the sun, but jumped in the shower first. When they were both clean and refreshed, smelling like lavender, he returned to the Bluefish he was cleaning and she went back to chopping garlic for the linguine aglio e olio planned for dinner. One day the husband came home with a 3’ by 6’ piece of mirror left over from a job. He attached it

to the back wall of the shower and also mounted a mirrored medicine cabinet to the front wall of the shower. The effect was similar to a dressing room where those held hostage are forced to look in the rear view mirror and then endure a full frontal assault. The husband, born with armor, forgot that his wife didn’t have the same defenses. Sweaty from all the manual labor, the husband jumped in the shower and patted himself on the back while scrubbing it. The mirror, as usual, was friendly, and he was delighted to be able to shave and do a full body scan for ticks at the same time. When he emerged from the shower with a towel slung low around his hips, like a gun holster, the wife couldn’t help but smile at his cowboy-like swagger.

The mirror took no prisoners. She took a deep breath and stepped in. The neighbors heard a scream, followed by a chain of expletives that would make a sailor blush. The old salt two doors down chuckled.

It took many summers for the wife to learn a life-changing lesson from her husband…an over-sized mirror in an outdoor shower wasn’t the enemy. With his dutiful support, she eased up on the war against herself.

That night at dinner, the husband enjoyed his carbs as usual, careful to avoid eye contact with the wife as she tore through leaves of kale with a vengeance. Life went on. The wife learned to shower with her eyes closed.

However, ticks will always be formidable foes. So, from that point on she was careful to check her body thoroughly, especially in the new folds that weren’t there in her 20’s and 30’s.

When the 4th of July exploded, a line-up of guests and family arrived needing food, amped up hydration, and sand removal. The outdoor shower was a hit with the men and kids. The women? Not so much. Barely dry, hair still dripping, they headed towards the Chardonnay for comfort.

When it was the wife’s turn to shower, she hesitated. She had always battled with mirrors, but never with an oversized one, naked, and in direct sunlight.

Occasionally, she still screams in the outdoor shower, but it’s only when someone turns on the kitchen faucet and the hot water bails, or if under close scrutiny while facing off with the mirror, she discovers a tick. That’s her story and she’s sticking to it.

Annie started writing her column, Raging Gracefully, because she’s committed to the idea that regardless of how old one becomes, raging as opposed to simply aging, is the new paradigm for stalling Father Time. If we all get behind her ideology maybe Mother Nature will agree. We are counting on that.

Our advice offering, wet nosed resident expert on human behavior.

Dear Dr. Mil, The other day my humans took me to the beach at Corneille Estates in Fire Island. As usual, I had a blast chasing balls, frolicking in the ocean, and stealing treats from open beach bags. Everyone had plenty to drink, but I was left high and dry. SOS! Thirsty Dear Thirsty, I’ll post an article on FaceBark about proper hydration for dogs at the beach and update humans about the importance of using sunscreen specifically designed for us dogs, especially on the oh-so-fair breeds with light skin or white fur or hair. Zinc and PABA are toxic to canines when ingested and therefore a no-no since most of us dogs are lickers. Thanks fur the heads up. I got your back! Dr. Mil

GOOD READS

LOCAL WRITERS

Ghost of the Nightingale

Written by West Islip locals, Pat and Diana Gorman, Ghost of the Nightingale is receiving outstanding reviews. A harrowing story of a young man who survived the Warsaw Ghetto in Nazi occupied Poland during World War II only to find himself corralled onto a train bound for Treblinka, the Nazi extermination camp designed for mass murder. An emotional tale with an unusual twist that weaves together two unlikely lives.

“Pat had recurrent dreams. The contents were disturbing. He literally saw himself in the middle of a death camp.” The LIST: We were fascinated to hear about how this story came to be written. Can you please tell us a little about how this story came to be.

Diana: For several years, Pat

had recurrent dreams. The contents were disturbing, and would wake him. Pat is a light sleeper who often wakes in the middle of the night, so I thought nothing of it until he started telling me about his dreams. The bits and pieces he could remember became unmistakable references to WWII and the Holocaust. At some point, he realized his dreams were taking him to a Nazi death camp. He literally saw himself in the middle of a death camp.

The LIST: Do either of you have a connection to WWII?

Diana: Our Dads both

volunteered to serve in WWII. While Pat always had a great interest in WWII, it was shortly after his mom’s death in 2009 when he began to remember snippets of his dreams and realized they were taking place during the Holocaust.

Pat: Diana’s grandparents immigrated here from Poland and Hungary. Radio free Europe allowed them to listen to Hitler’s speeches. Her mom, Viola, told us of arguments her parents had over Hitler. My dad was in Germany at the end of the war and picked up some Yiddish. While my dad never wanted to talk about the war, I wish I had tried harder to get him to speak to me.

24 | THE LIST MAGAZINE

The LIST: So when did ‘the

dreams’ become ‘the book’?

Pat: I came to the realization that we needed to somehow document these dreams. One morning, I told Diana that I had something we could do together. She will tell you that writing a book about the Holocaust was not one of her top guesses. However, we both agreed that these dreams, this story – needed to be shared. The LIST: Can you tell us how it was to write together as a married couple? Diana: Writing a book with someone isn’t easy, however, it was a great way to build our relationship. We are very different with very different perspectives, yet our shared passion to tell this story persevered and I think our relationship grew stronger. Pat: We were drawn to WWII movies and documentaries, but had to keep ourselves in check to temper the grief and sadness. While writing “Ghost”, we shared a journey, not only through one of history’s darkest times, but through differences in perspectives, styles and sometimes a single word. The process gave us new knowledge and an array of emotions that can never be forgotten; emotions we continue to feel on a daily basis. We have a unique bond from making this journey together.

Summer What better way to unwind than a day at the beach, or in your own back yard oasis, lost in a really good book. Here are a few of our favorites that include highly reviewed debuts from local south shore authors. Pour yourself a tall, cool drink, grab your sun hat, and enjoy getting lost for a few hours… OTHER GOOD READS FROM LOCAL AUTHORS

Sitting in the Silence

by Bay Shore resident and Interfaith Reverend Barbara Brownyard. Simple reflections set alongside beautiful photos of benches (some you may recognize) that invite you to sit in silence for a moment and feed your soul.

Shipwreck of Hopes

by Brightwaters local Angela Reich. A perfect beach read for Long Islanders as this historical fiction novel travels between the south shore of Long Island and a revolutionary war-torn Italy during the mid-1800’s. The story is centered around the wreck of the Elizabeth, which ran aground on a sand bar 100 yards off Fire Island in 1850. A suspenseful tale of treacherous seas, murder, deception, and fate.

The Great South Bay

by written and illustrated by Bayport resident Jeanine O’Grady. A wonderful picture book and tool for teaching children about the importance of protecting our beloved bay for future generations. TWO OF OUR FAN FAVORITES

Becoming by Michelle Obama.

An intimate, powerful, and inspiring memoir by the former First Lady of the United States. NY Times Bestseller, Oprah’s Book Club Pick, and NAACP Image Award Winner. “ I have the audiobook and l love listening while walking” JL

Searching for Sylvie Lee

by NY Times Bestselling author Jean Kwok. A deeply moving, suspenseful drama that untangles the complicated bonds between two sisters and their mother in a Chinese immigrant family. When the eldest daughter disappears without a trace, family secrets emerge. It is a profound exploration of the many ways culture and language can divide us and the impossibility of ever truly knowing someone—especially those we love.

Owner Justin Galbraith has been walking that 2 mile stretch since he was 12 and always thought there could be a better way to get in and out, especially when you have things to carry. Just call, text, or reserve ahead on their website for a one way or round-trip ride. One thing to note, they stop service when the park closes.

Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen

Introducing:

In case you're not familiar with the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen, here's a little background, as explained by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), which is a non-profit activist organization.

for men

The Dirty Dozen is a list of the 12 fruits and vegetables that contain the highest concentrations of pesticides, for which the EWG recommends buying organic. The Clean Fifteen is a list of 15 fruits and vegetables that contain the fewest concentrations of pesticides, which the EWG believes are the safest foods to buy conventionally.

mondays At a time when there are so many supporters for women, we want to make sure our male counterparts know we are here for them too. Cancer does not discriminate + men go through the same harrowing challenges when battling cancer. Hey guys, we got you covered!
