As we welcome the holidays and settle into the months beyond, I’m reminded how this season brings so much with it. Life gets busier, our emotions run deeper, and the days fill quickly with traditions, commitments, and the swirl of so much happening around us. For this Holiday & Beyond issue, we turned to Pastor Lou from Community Church in Babylon for a seasonal reflection that feels right for this time of year. His message is simple and relatable: in any meaningful relationship, trust takes time. This is true in the ones we share with friends and family, and very much so in our relationship with faith and prayer. Christmas, at its heart, is a story about reaching out first with love and then meeting people where they are. It reminds us that beginnings matter and that starting small is enough.

“Do you trust me?”

These are the words of Aladdin in one of the opening scenes of the classic Disney movie. He looks at the princess he just met, reaches out his hand, and asks her to jump from the roof of a building.

If you’ve seen the movie, you know it’s romantic, and you know they live happily ever after.

But that’s not real life. As a dad with a daughter, this scene doesn’t hit the way it used to. In fact, it’s pretty unsettling. The young princess is putting her life in the hands of a stranger.

She doesn’t know him. She can’t trust him. And she definitely shouldn’t do what he says. She has skipped the natural progression of healthy relationships.

I’m not a relationship expert, but I’ve noticed that healthy relationships usually follow a simple pattern: know, trust, do. The more we get to know someone, the more we’re willing to trust them. And the more we trust them, the more we’re willing to do what they say.

We all know the discomfort of being pressured to follow the directions of someone we don’t know or trust. Something feels off. It feels unnatural. It’s starting at step three.

For some of us, church has always felt that way. You walked through the door and were told what to do. You were told what God was okay with and what he wasn’t. You felt the pressure to obey. It felt off. It wasn’t natural. It was starting at step three. Trusting God felt like putting your life in the hands of a stranger. And for some, that was enough to end their experience with church. But what if it ended because of where it started?

The more I read about the life of Jesus, the more

I notice his insistence on starting with step one. His earliest followers were invited simply to come and see. As they got to know him, they slowly began to trust him. Over time, they began to do what he said. Eventually they reached a place where there was nothing they wouldn’t do for him.

But they didn’t start there.

And this is part of what makes Christmas so important. It’s the story of God choosing to start at step one. To a world that didn’t want him, he chose to make himself knowable.

He entered our world to show the extent of his love for us and to reveal just how far that love would go.

In other words, he showed us he could be trusted before asking to be trusted.

And as we get to know the God who gave everything for us, there’s an invitation to begin to trust, to believe that the words he spoke were motivated by the love he felt. And in that trust, we begin to let his direction inform our decisions.

It’s definitely not always easy, but it feels natural. Christmas reminds us that God meets us at step one. He invites us to know him. As we get to know him, trust grows. As trust grows, following him begins to feel right — the same progression as every healthy relationship.

So…if your faith has ever felt off, uncomfortable, or unnatural, maybe the problem wasn’t you. Maybe the problem was just that it started in the wrong place.

Christmas is an invitation to start at one. To come and see. To get to know the God who entered our world to show his love and reveal just how far that love would go.

Bringing Nature to Your Holiday Table

A beautiful holiday tablescape adds an inviting touch that elevates the occasion and makes everything feel a little more special. Inspired by nature, we’re embracing tablescapes this season that honor tradition as well as the planet by using materials gathered from our own backyards to create something elegant, warm, and meaningful.

Sustainable table design is about discovering, and making use of, the abundance around us. When we set our holiday tables with intention, choosing natural elements, we make a quiet statement that beauty and environmental responsibility can coexist. Some of the most stunning centerpieces come straight from the earth.

This season, let your table tell a story of nature, creativity, and thoughtful living, the kind that makes celebrations meaningful for both our families and our planet.

A fragrant runner of evergreens, dried oranges, cinnamon sticks, and pinecones adds a warm citrus-and-pine glow to the table. A small chocolate favor wrapped with twine and greenery rests on natural linen napkins as shown, or create a similar look with a simple evergreen sprig tucked into a kraft name card to add charm.

A winter woodland centerpiece layers soft moss, slender twigs, and white candles inside a reclaimed wood trough to highlight the quiet beauty of the season. The mix of natural textures and varied candle heights creates a serene look that feels warm, modern, and timeless. And elements can be composted or reused season after season, effortlessly combining sustainability and style.

The Sparkle vs The Truth

’Tis the season…and we’re unwrapping a few skincare buzzwords — from Korean salmon facials to banana peel masks— to see if they are truly a gift… or just a catchy fish tale.

In a world where “trending” often outpaces “tested”, it’s tough to tell what actually works and what just looks good in your feed. From deep-sea science to DIY hacks, some treatments claim to brighten, tighten, and detox in ways that sound too good to be true.

So, we asked trusted local pros to help us make sense of what’s true and what’s just a lot of sparkle!

Korean Salmon Facials

THE SPARKLE

This attention-getting facial uses salmon DNA, often derived from the milt of male salmon. It’s said to boost collagen, reduce fine lines and brighten skin, thanks to natural sources of omega-3s and amino acids.

THE TRUTH

There is some science behind it. Polynucleotides in salmon DNA show promise for skin repair but real results come from injectables, not from spa facials or diluted topicals.

“Topically, it might offer a calming glow,” says Hillary from Hello Gorgeous. “But you’re not getting that same transformation without deeper delivery.”

HOW IT SHINES

In the right setting, with the right product, it may support skin renewal and radiance. Just don’t expect overnight miracles from a salon version or sheet mask.

*This treatment is offered locally at Hello Gorgeous. For details or a consultation, feel free to reach out to them.

Barrier Repair Balms

THE SPARKLE

Slugging and barrier balms are having a moment. (yes, that jar of Vaseline) The idea? Seal in moisture with occlusives like Vaseline or Aquaphor, especially in winter.

THE TRUTH

Although these balms are highly purified and dermatologistapproved, they don’t hydrate the skin themselves. They simply lock in moisture. That makes them great for post-procedure care, chapped lips, or dry patches but they can feel too heavy for oily or acne-prone skin and don’t contain active ingredients like antioxidants or ceramides.

HOW IT SHINES

“They definitely have a place when skin is compromised or healing,” says Hillary from Hello Gorgeous. “But I wouldn’t lean on them as your everyday skincare routine. They’re a protective layer, not a treatment. Great short-term, but not something I’d

use on the whole face long-term, especially for acne-prone clients.”

For everyday moisture, many skincare professionals recommend barrier-supporting moisturizers with ingredients like ceramides, peptides, or hyaluronic acid. These formulas hydrate and strengthen the skin without the heaviness of an occlusive.

Banana Peel Masks

THE SPARKLE

Rub the inside of a banana peel on your face to brighten and de-puff! That’s what some influencers suggest.

THE TRUTH

Peels contain antioxidants and potassium, but there is little proof they do anything for your skin when applied whole. Most studies look at concentrated banana extracts—not the peel.

HOW IT SHINES

It doesn’t. Not for your face. But throw it in a smoothie, and you're golden.

EDITOR’S REMINDER Everyone’s skin is different, so results will vary. Always research new products or treatments and consult a licensed skincare professional for guidance.

2026 TRENDING IN

TRAVEL

The enchanting island of Bali, where cliffside hideaways meet turquoise waters.

Where to Go Now… and Next

A new year always stirs up wanderlust, and 2026 is already calling us to dream a little bigger. There’s a fresh energy around travel. People are seeking experiences that surprise them in the best way, the kinds that remind you how big and wide the world really is.

According to Expedia’s Unpack ’26 Forecast, travelers are leaning toward destinations that feel expansive and alive. Big Sky, Montana is calling travelers to its vast mountain landscapes, world-class skiing, and exhilarating feeling of space, which offers visitors the rare opportunity to breathe and reset. Sardinia, Italy stands apart for its natural beauty and sense of discovery -- it’s the Italy that feels new again. Okinawa, Japan offers island serenity, deep tradition and a warm, welcoming culture. And Vietnam invites travelers on a sensory journey where every sunrise, market, and meal feels unforgettable.

Travel has a way of stirring something inside us. Sometimes it begins as a quiet ‘someday dream’, and sometimes that becomes the plan you finally say yes to. Either way, it starts with believing it’s possible.

That spirit is what drew us to speak with local Long Islander Jen Cantin, who recently returned from the journey she had imagined for years.

Indonesia

Discovering Asia

For years, we balanced corporate jobs, family commitments, and the pursuit of the American Dream, but deep down, we craved something more—with a greater sense of freedom. That craving was fueled by an even richer, lifelong dream to explore far-off places and cultures we’d only read about. We felt the pull of experiences waiting just beyond our doorstep, and Asia, with its vibrant way of life, promised endless adventure.

Over two months, we travelled through six countries across Southeast Asia, carrying only a 35 lb backpack. We didn’t focus on what we packed or what we wore but rather the wonder of discovery, and learned that the most unforgettable moments weren’t always about the destinations themselves, but the incredible people we met along the way. The warmth and kindness of locals reminded us of our shared humanity–showing us that, despite our differences, we all share the same extraordinary world.

Bali, often called the Island of the Gods, completely captivated us. They say Bali either consumes you or becomes part of your soul, and we found ourselves enchanted by its beauty and spirit. And Vietnam offered a raw simplicity that left a lasting impression, as well. It offered proof that there is so much good waiting for us in the world when we’re willing to step outside our comfort zone.

What We Took Home

What we took home with us doesn’t hang on the refrigerator, it lives and breathes inside us. I worried about slipping back into my old American routine, but travel has taught me to flow with life, greet each day with curiosity, and notice all the beauty around us.

We have internalized each custom and tradition we witnessed, every delicacy we savored, every local we engaged with. Each experience has enriched us. And the photo journal we compiled will forever remain a tangible reminder that we have the power to shape our experiences, that dreams can and do come true, and that it is there life truly begins.

We hope our travels spark something in others — a gentle nudge to set down the fears, quiet the excuses, and move toward what’s been calling them. Every adventure begins differently, but the moments that follow are always worth it.

A Long Island Theatre Family Shines This Season

For the Gallagher family, this holiday season marks a truly personal and professional full circle moment, as their combined talents move from the stages of New York City back to Long Island. Broadway performer Robert Gallagher (South Pacific, Les Misérables) and his daughter, Karina Gallagher, are currently sharing the stage at the Argyle Theatre in Babylon, spreading holiday cheer in its festive production of Annie.

Robert takes on the iconic role of Daddy Warbucks while Karina brings her talents to the show's lively ensemble. The experience is a unique and cherished one for this father/daughter and no doubt reveling in the wings will be the equally talented wife and mother of this duo, Marie Danvers Gallagher (Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, The Fantasticks), an accomplished Broadway veteran herself.

Fittingly, the Argyle Theatre itself is a family affair, a dream brought to fruition by the father-son team

of Mark and Dylan Perlman who serve as executive producers and managing partners. Their vision was to bring the caliber of a Broadway production to the heart of Long Island, and their success is evident in the outstanding equity performers they attract. The Gallagher family and other Annie cast members, like Kendal Hartse (Miss Hannigan), represent a long and celebrated list of Argyle talent over the years.

Don't miss the chance to witness the hopeful and heartwarming (spoiler alert!) happy ending of everyone’s favorite NYC orphan, now through January 4, 2026. The theatre's commitment to excellence ensures that every show is a memorable event and following Annie, the Argyle promises a continued season filled with powerful stories and spectacular performances that will inspire and delight audiences. Book your tickets today (not Tomorrow!) on the official website of the Argyle Theatre and discover the joy of live theatre right here on Long Island.

These Grinch-green cookies get their vibrant color and subtle flavor from ceremonial-grade matcha, known for its smooth, mellow, almost creamy taste that keeps the sweetness in check. White chocolate melts into creamy bites throughout, making them a fun twist on a classic sugar cookie.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 egg

• 1 stick unsalted butter, softened

• 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

• Pinch of salt

• 1 tsp baking soda

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350°.

• ¾ cup brown sugar

• 1 ½ tsp pure vanilla extract

• ½ cup white chocolate chips

- or more if you desire

• 1 ½ tbsp ceremonial-grade matcha

2. Cream butter and brown sugar together until combined, add one egg, mix again until combined.

3. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, baking soda, ceremonial-grade matcha powder and a pinch of salt.

4. Slowly sift the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until combined, then add vanilla, and mix until just combined. Fold the white chocolate chips into the dough. Scoop 1 tablespoon size ball of dough and place on the prepared cookie sheet.

5. Bake for 11-14 minutes, take cookies out to cool for 5-10 minutes and enjoy.

A Note About Matcha: Ceremonial-grade matcha is made from younger, shade-grown tea leaves and milled extra fine, which gives it a cleaner, better-tasting result in baking. Culinary matcha comes from more mature leaves and can taste grassier or slightly bitter. Ceremonial-grade is pricier, but you’ll have plenty left over, which is perfect for whisking into warm milk for a cozy latte or blending into a morning smoothie. You can find ceremonial-grade matcha at Sherry’s Market in Babylon, Whole Foods, or Walmart.

El Café, a local favorite in East Islip, is sharing their delicious matcha cookie recipe. El Café brings together good vibes, great coffee, vibrant matcha drinks, and the kind of treats that make any day sweeter. For the non-bakers, stop by El Café for a warm drink and one of their matcha cookies.

Gingerbread House Tips

THICKNESS FOR STRUCTURE

Roll dough to 1/4 – 3/8 inch for walls and roofs to ensure strong, clean edges.

TEMPLATES

Create custom paper stencils or use a ruler for precise walls and roof lines.

CUT BEFORE BAKING

For a perfect fit: cut first then bake, and if needed, trim edges while warm.

PREVENT SPREADING

Chill the cut pieces for 10-20 minutes before baking so they hold their exact shape.

ASSEMBLY ICING

Use thick royal icing. It should hold a peak and harden quickly.

Allow pieces to fully dry between steps, especially before adding a roof.

SUPPORTS

Cans or jars make excellent helpers while setting walls in place.

Gingerbread Cookie Tips

THICKNESS FOR STRUCTURE

Roll cookies slightly thinner, about 3/16 – ¼ inch for a perfect bite.

BAKE PREFERENCE

Bake lightly for a softer bite or a bit longer for crisp edges.

Buffalo Wings: The iconic Super Bowl Food

Keep this recipe close for game day or to make any winter day a winner.

INGREDIENTS (SERVES 4-6)

WINGS AND MARINADE

• 2 1/2 to 3 lbs chicken wings, split

• 1 cup buttermilk

• Kosher salt and black pepper

• 1 1/2 to 2 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 tsp paprika

• 1 tsp garlic powder

• 1 tsp onion powder

• 1/2 tsp cayenne

• 1 tsp salt

• Black pepper to taste

METHOD

MARINATE

Season wings lightly with salt and pepper. Place in a bowl or resealable bag with buttermilk. Marinate at least 2 hours, ideally 4 to 8 hours or overnight.

COAT

Mix flour with paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt and pepper. Remove wings from buttermilk, letting excess drip off. Dredge in seasoned flour and let rest 10 to 15 minutes so the coating adheres.

BUFFALO SAUCE

• 1/2 cup hot sauce

• 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

• 1 tsp white vinegar

• 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)

DEEP FRY

Heat vegetable or canola oil to 350-375°F. Fry wings in batches for 7 to 10 minutes until cooked through and golden. Drain on a rack or paper towels.

AIR FRY

Preheat to 375°F. Arrange wings in a single layer. Cook about 30 minutes, flipping every 10 minutes. Raise to 400°F for the last 5 minutes for extra crispiness. Kitchen Note: The air fryer method delivers a crisp exterior without the heaviness of frying.

MAKE THE BUFFALO SAUCE

Whisk butter with hot sauce. Stir in white vinegar and Worcestershire if using. Taste and adjust.

TOSS AND SERVE

Place hot wings in a bowl and toss with sauce. Serve with celery and carrot sticks.

QUICK BLUE CHEESE (for dipping)

Mash blue cheese with a spoonful of mayo and a squeeze of lemon juice. Season with black pepper.
