The Vegas Vibe: Aji 53 Smithtown Cover Story Inside‌

In The Spotlight: Aji 53 Of Smithtown The NYC vibe came to Bay Shore when Aji 53 opened a few years back, and it quickly became the hot spot, building a reputation as the best sushi restaurant on Long Island with the highest Zagat rating in its category - AND taking center stage twice on the cover of the List Magazine. This time, it’s Aji 53 of Smithtown, their newest incarnation, in the spotlight for our cover story… Both restaurants are open for lunch and dinner and share the same Japanese fusion menu; however, there is a distinct difference in their vibes. Both are chic and modern in ambiance, but if it’s more of a “night life” atmosphere you crave, then Aji of Smithtown is the place to go. The décor is reminiscent of a lounge, showcasing both the Alcohol and Sushi Bar completely lit in blue. Its trendy look, lighting and wide open layout combine to create an attractive visual, giving you the feel of a city lounge. The restaurant is well designed and decorated, from entrance to bathroom. Owner Barry Huung has been quoted as saying that his newest location in Smithtown is even more visually appealing than the original Aji 53 in Bay Shore, which was designed in the style of an upscale Manhattan restaurant. “What’s better than Manhattan? You’ve got to go to Vegas!” he explained. The Smithtown location, which opened last year, pairs this Las Vegas feel with Japanese cuisine. Here, you may even be compelled

to linger a little longer after dinner at their happening bar. It’s a great place to bring a date or a group of friends. Of course, Bay Shore still has its own uniquely cool vibe and crowd. If you are interested in a more intimate atmosphere, a home away from home, or a private party, it is a perfect fit. While the décor is visually appealing in both establishments, a restaurant only survives on the merit of the food it serves, and Aji 53 is the best place for sushi in both of its two locations.

The menu includes the best quality sushi and sashimi, with an innovative sushi selection that mixes classic Japanese elements with South American and Western influences, resulting in out-of-this-world, unique flavors. They also feature beef, chicken and hibachi, udon noodle dishes and steak and seafood offerings. King of the Sea, a seafood dish which includes shrimp, scallops and a lobster tail in a lemon butter sauce, earned its presence on our premiere cover of the List Magazine and drew many of our readers to Aji in the first place. An entire page of the menu is dedicated to the Aji 53 Signature Rolls, featuring items like the 3rd Ave, which consists of shrimp tempura, fresh

lobster meat, tobiko and cream cheese wrapped with white seaweed eel sauce, and the Aji King, a roll made up of king crab, deep-fried avocado and shrimp, with spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail and the chef’s special sauce – an all-around hit. Desserts also garner high ratings for being creatively delicious and decorative. There is truly something for everyone. Enjoy their lunch specials, sushi bar entrees, a la carte sushi and sashimi, dining or just drinks at the bar. Coming soon in both locations – more of a focus on the happy hour crowd! Let us know what you think… Hope to see you soon!

FROM THE PUBLISHER

For me, the change of seasons is one reason why I feel so lucky to live on Long Island. All come with their own special memories, each of which we hold dear for different reasons. Every season serves as its own new beginning, yet is at the same time familiar and welcoming. The seasons ahead seem to place more focus inside – within our homes, within our families…within ourselves. While we are focused on thoughts of indoors, our attention is drawn to those home improvement projects we hope to complete. In this issue, we have hand-selected professional tradesmen whom we feel comfortable recommending as contractors to help you. Be sure to call them and talk to them. We also feature a double-spread page highlighting the work of Terri Associates’ landscape/build company. By planning ahead, you can have a beautiful outdoor space ready for next summer. We love the work of Cottone Kitchens and Kalifornia Carpentry for remodeling, and how about enlisting some help with those holiday lights by checking out Artistic Nightscapes, the holiday lighting guys? For our trendsetters who are more focused on updating your Fall wardrobe or look, we always like to keep you in the know regarding the latest fashion trends and beauty professionals to help you look your best. If you are looking for an excellent eatery to fulfill your varied dining desires, we have selected a handful for you to choose from, all of which come highly recommended and are LIstapproved. There is something for everyone – for those times when you want a great meal, but don’t feel like getting dressed up; those special occasions when you want to take a date out to a romantic place; or those evenings you feel like spending a night out on the town. Look no further than within these pages. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Long Islanders are all caring and wonderful human beings when it comes right down to it, and some of us are especially generous when it comes to rallying together to give back. We want to take the time to thank those special people for all they do. There are many other highlights in this special issue; we hope that you find something informative, inspiring and heartwarming as you look through our magazine.

Decorating Ideas For This Fall Fall Gourd Vase A hollowed-out gourd makes an excellent vase and fresh fall centerpiece. Pumpkins of varying sizes and colors, as well as beautiful red flowers, give this centerpiece a fun, fall feel that will be perfect for your table all season long.

Flowers Under Glass Flip your thinking — this creative centerpiece turns wine and champagne glasses on their heads for a fancy, no-fuss eye-catcher. Trim full-bloom florals at their stem, then tuck them under glasses. A charger helps bump it up a notch. Editor’s Tip: Fake flowers work just as well and last through the entire season.

Fresh Bittersweet Vines And Garland Fresh bittersweet vines and garland are a favorite to use for Autumn decorating. They have lovely yellow pods that open to reveal bright red/orange berries and can be used to make festive seasonal wreaths and swags. One variety is very invasive and will wrap around trees and eventually choke them; so if you plan to plant one, be sure it is the native variety that won’t hurt the trees.

Enhancing The Feeling Of Warmth & Comfort To Your Home Most of us think about serenity, or wish for it, when we are experiencing stress from external forces. As the weather changes, our thoughts move to inside our home. We want to find warmth and comfort when we return there, and we can achieve this by creating a visual atmosphere that enhances those feelings. Decorating or redecorating our sanctuary can be a daunting task. Most of us are aware today of the décor trend that emphasizes “simple.” Simple doesn’t mean plain; it means uncluttered, serene, tranquil, organized and, most of all, livable. It means you can walk in the door and take a deep sigh of relief as you leave behind the effects of the storm and admire the things you love. One way to do this is to bring nature into your home. Nature gives us a sense of stability and joy and can be introduced into any type of décor or color scheme. Just a few touches can bring you the beauty and tranquility of a garden or deep forest, or of course the seashore. Start at your front door and move through the house, checking for those things that distract the eye (remove them) and for places to add a natural touch. Make your spaces efficient with places to store the things you use in that area (baskets) and don’t be afraid of empty space – nature is not concerned with an open field. Empty space gives the eye a chance to rest and appreciate the other things in that area. Add branches to a vase, put out some gourds and light a candle. As you plan what to do next, you can leave those external forces outside the door and be glad to be home. Travel Options For Every Taste By: Rosemary Saganic, Travel Advisor

Parents want their families to engage with their travel destinations and to connect with people in these places. Traveling with your children when they become teens can be challenging. Diverse interests and age differentials require a range of options. Finding destinations with something for everyone can help your family build memories that last a lifetime. In recent years, a market once defined by fun-and-sun cruises and all-inclusive resorts has expanded to include enriching visits to far-flung destinations, volunteerism and adventure travel experiences often shared by grandparents, parents and children alike. Indeed, planning a family gathering, whether it’s a standard vacation or a special occasion such as a family reunion, landmark birthday or anniversary, can be as complicated as planning a special event. Because of all of this, more families are turning to travel agents. Between information overload and a general lack of time, issues involving the planning of family vacations are vast. So, while research is being done online, it’s often overwhelming to wade through all the information out there. Beaches Resorts by Sandals what memories are made of...the Beaches concept is so vast and all-encompassing that you’ll feel the resorts are designed just for you. Imagine the Caribbean’s most inspirational beaches, ocean-sized pools and more. Xbox360, Scratch DJ Academy, golf, waterskiing and scuba diving with Newton Dive Boats and Padi instructors is all included and unlimited. There are water parks featuring enormous slides and lazy rivers, plus a Body Glove Waves surf simulator for added fun. Up to 16 restaurants per resort are included, as well as luxurious rooms and suites, with

some even having kids’ rooms and bunk beds. Top suites even include personal butler service. Nightly entertainment includes Karaoke, game rooms, movies and dance/nightclubs for both teens and adults. Everyone can do whatever they like, whenever they want. And Red Lane Spa will help Mom and Dad stay relaxed. Beaches Resorts are located in Jamaica and in Turks n Caicos Island. Looking for not just a vacation, but a world of discovery? Then look no further than Tauck Bridges, connecting people and places with the promise of an inspirational travel experience. Tauck offers an all-inclusive, stress-free value, taking care of every detail. Families build lasting bonds or “Bridges,” with different generations able to experience the joys of travel together. Every adventure is expertly choreographed so that everyone has a great time, from children to parents to grandparents. Tauck brings 86+ years of destination expertise - exclusive access to enriching family experiences you can’t get if traveling on your own. Hotels are hand picked, and the dining features regional cuisine. Imagine your family on a 4-night cruise to the Galapagos Islands visiting a wildlife wonderland that time forgot. Stand on the equator, in Quito, which divides the city in half. Perhaps a European visit to learn more about your family heritage would be more to your liking. European trip options include Italy, France, Great Britain and even a family riverboat adventure. Everything Tauck does is first class, and no one will return home saying they were bored! For those longing for that exotic South Pacific experience, Paul Gauguin Cruises is offering an “Ambassadors of the Environment” Youth Program. Explorer and environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau is committed to the belief that the survival of the world’s oceans depends on

capturing the imagination at a young age. In order for conservation to remain a priority among future generations, Cousteau created the program under the auspices of the Ocean Futures Society. This unique experience introduces young travelers (ages 9 to 17) to the extraordinary natural wonders of French Polynesia through direct, hands-on interactive experiences with marine and island ecosystems. Young Ambassadors explore coral reefs, hike rainforest trails and visit marae (ancient Polyn Temples). They also learn how black pearls and vanilla are cultivated, how volcanic islands become coral atolls and how to paddle an outrigger canoe. Parents are encouraged to join their children on eco-excursions and other activities aboard and ashore. This program is available in 2012 on December 22nd and 29th Holiday Sailings, and in 2013 on all cruises from June 1st through August 17th, plus December 21st and 28th Holiday Sailings. Paul Gauguin Cruises sail to Tahiti, Society Islands, Cook Islands, The Marquesas and to Fiji. The world is a pretty amazing place once you get to know it. With Adventures By Disney, your family will get to

know the world in ways they never expected - and will never forget. Travel to some of those places you thought you’d visit when the kids were grown. Visit Eastern Costa Rica to experience a land that is as exciting as it is colorful. Zip-line above the treetops of a rainforest teeming with exotic wildlife. Race down whitewater rapids and explore the lush Caribbean coast... home to Costa Rica’s largest green sea turtle population. Local experts will guide you through your destination, helping you spot indigenous creatures. Whether you choose Europe, Central America, Australia, China or the USA, the highlight will be watching your family try new foods, meet new people and experience new adventures. Leave the details to Disney they do it so well. Parents want their families to engage with their travel destinations and to connect with people in these places. They’re looking for authenticity, personal connections and meaningful interactions with the places they visit.

He Said, She Said

To Change Or Not To Change? He said many a wise man and poets have claimed, “change is healthy.” In fact, John F. Kennedy said, “The one unchangeable certainty is that nothing is certain or unchangeable.” That being said, why do we resist such natural phenomena? Why do we fear change? During my divorce, the changes I went through were uncountable. They were physical, emotional, and even visual. I thought the world was changing, but I came to realize things don’t change – only we do. Resisting change is a human reaction that involves a deeper need than love - security - that evasive falsehood we all hold on to when we think we have it. “Everything is great,” we say. “Life is steady, feels good and every day is so secure.” “Life is fulfilling, my job is rewarding, what a great day!” We have all had that euphoric sense and, yes, it feels great. It’s not reality, it’s a moment. Life evolves, change happens. When part of your life is not working - work, romance, marriage, kids – it’s because

we expect certain things to stay the same, but they do not. It’s the successful person who sees this change and embraces it. When I accepted the fact that my relationship with my whole world was changing and realized that I could choose my reaction, that I could choose a proactive direction, I felt reborn. The world suddenly got bigger, so much more interesting, and even physically brighter. Sure being alone was frightful. Facing issues and decisions alone was uncomfortable; but then I realized I was always alone, really. Being alone with yourself and embracing it is wonderful. So leave a job, leave a marriage, or leave a life style? It already happened when you weren’t looking. Don’t fight it; embrace it. She said we think about whether to stay or not to stay in a marriage, a current relationship or even a job. First ask yourself - am I happy, and what am I looking for? Am I better with the

situation I know and am comfortable with, or do I opt to change and embrace the transition? Hint: If you are asking yourself this question, you already know the answer. Through teaching “Adults In Transition” and as a woman who has gone through transitions herself, including a divorce, ended relationships, change of careers and returning back to school, I have learned that, once you set the course, the journey begins. This is not to say it was without fear, but I trusted my decision and embraced it. Every single time, I was more than happy with my change and absolutely had - No Regrets. Make a list of what you want to achieve. Begin to find the ‘YOU’ you want. What do you need to get there? Every change or transition needs a plan - start yours and trust in your decision. Change isn’t easy, but it is good! Career change? Think of what you love to do. What are you good at? Continued on Page 15

Fabulous New Restaurant In West Islip Coined “The New French Cuisine” We are pleased to highlight Roots Bistro Gourmand in West Islip, a wonderful new addition to include in The List Magazine as a “Must Go.”

Experience New French Bistronomic Cuisine High-End Food In A Relaxed Bistro Atmosphere

The owners, Philippe Corbet and James Orlandi, both boast an extensive resume and are well versed with affiliations of the finer restaurants in both France and Manhattan. Corbet is a French native and trained chef. After schooling, apprenticeship and working in French Michelin star restaurants, he made the move to the U.S. Since then, he has held executive chef positions, namely at Bouley in NYC and O’s in St. James. Now - lucky for us! – together, they have opened this wonderful “New French” restaurant right here on the South Shore. The duo’s concept revolutionizes French cuisine and infuses gastronomic techniques in a modest bistro setting. The idea is to serve gourmet food with an extensive wine list, but without the fussiness you would find in the usual old world French restaurants known for white table cloths, tuxedoed service and elaborate floral displays. This is New French, It replaces all the fuss with a dynamic gastronomy and a lively, relaxed atmosphere. Their menu is creative, consisting of fresh close-to-the-home ingredients that change with the season. Be sure to ask about the chef tasting… fabulous unique dishes created by the chef spontaneously especially for you and your party. A comfortable space by the bar was also given attention to detail in the aesthetics of its interior. Here, you can sit at bistro tables for cocktails and small, creative plates. Cozy up this new season ahead for their happy hour and entertainment on certain nights. This comfortable place may very well become your new hot spot. Enjoy!

The List’s Favorite Wineries For Fall On The North Fork

Croteaux – Take a look at any hip bistro’s menu; Rosés aren’t just for summer anymore. While the sun is still shining, check out the Parisian-style tasting room in the courtyard, sit back on the lovely red iron chairs and see what a winery that ONLY makes Rosés can do. When the weather turns, visitors can camp out in their charming French Bar & Gallery Room overlooking the vineyard. Many of the wines at Croteaux are made the Provincial style and are fantastic all year round. Their “Ruby” wine, made with Cabernet Franc, is a perfect fit with the Thanksgiving Turkey. www.croteaux.com

Tracy Weiss started her career in wine criticism at age 11 when she dismissed Manischewitz as “overly sweet and unpalatable” at her family’s Passover Seder. She further developed her palate by tasting wine all over the world. Her favorite place to sample interesting vintages? Home. Splitting time between Manhattan and the North Fork of Long Island, Tracy covers food and wine for the New York Cork Report and has been featured in newspapers and blogs in the Tri-State Area. Since she can be found in tasting rooms up and down the North Fork, The List Magazine asked Tracy for the Must See Vineyards for Autumn and Winter Months. Ok. Let’s face it. Flip flop weather has been long gone. We’ve rescued our leather boots from storage and have been thrilled with the slight chill in the air. Long summer days on the beach have given way to autumn leaves and pumpkins on the East End. But don’t let the lack of traffic on the LIE fool you - the entire Fall season is a great time to come to the North Fork.

Roanoke Vineyards - With two locations, a new tasting room on Love Lane in Mattituck and the main winery in Riverhead, Roanoke is a fabulous place to pick up some rich red wines to sip by the fireplace. Their Mattituck location is home to the exclusive “Bond Blend” and sits across from Love Lane Market, where you can purchase handmade sweet potato ravioli to pair it with. Roanoke’s spicy merlots and well-structured Meritage wines are only available on site and cannot be found in any retails outlets or eateries. And trust me, it’s worth the trip. www.roanokevineyards.com

Long Island Wine Country boasts over 40 different labels and has been voted by Trip Advisor and Reuters as one of the Top 10 North American Wine Destinations. Vineyards planted in the mid-1970’s in old potato fields enjoy the longest growing season in the state of New York and are the foundation for the region’s incredible wines. Only 30-ish years since they got their start, North Fork wineries are on par with their brethren in some of the better-known wine locales. There is truly something for everyone out East. Fruit-forward Reds, food-friendly Sparklers and refreshing Whites can all be found due to the many varieties grown on the Island.

Sherwood House Vineyards – A charmingly renovated 1860’s Farmhouse in Jamesport is the best place to sample the wines of Sherwood House. The airy tasting room has the feel of a swank lobby in a Bed and Breakfast, and their award winning 2010 Chardonnay is perfect with a roast chicken and butternut squash. Peek into Material Objects next store for high-end North Forkinspired home furnishings. www.sherwoodhousevineyards.com

Many people think of wine tasting as a summer vacation activity, but you’d be better served by visiting this time of year. The energy in the wine world is buzzing. Harvest is in full swing and the region’s winemakers are busy creating next year’s vintages. Now is the time to don your cashmere sweaters and plan a trip to buy bottles for holiday dinners or nights curled up on the couch.

Sparkling Pointe – How does our hometown bubbly stack up against our neighbors to the West in France? Attend an event at the winery on Saturday, November 10th to find out how the best sparkling wine on this side of the Atlantic compares in a tasting against traditional wines from the Champagne region. They’ll be pouring a vertical of their Brut Seduction along with some French favorites. Tickets are available on the website for $125. Can’t make it? Sparkling Pointe will have a gift shop up and running for the holidays. Try the 2008 Blanc De Noir and 2009 Carnival Cuvee…my favorites to drink as an aperitif - or all night! www.sparklingpointe.com/home 12 | The LIst Magazine

In addition to Tracy, whose recommendations have never steered us wrong when it comes to selecting wine, we want to shine a spotlight on another very special vineyard on the North Folk. It’s called Baiting Hollow Farms, a very special place to us, especially for our very talented photographer, Susan Eckert. It was her idea to pay them a visit and take some beautiful photographs because, not only does Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard make, sell and serve delicious wines and food (be sure to try Sharon’s meatballs), this familyfriendly vineyard is a home for 26 rescue horses - Egyptian Arabians, miniature horses and more. As Susan spoke about the tireless rescue efforts, the patient rehabilitation work taken on by the owners and caretakers,

about the unique and heart wrenching stories behind each rescue, and about the uplifting energy of the vineyard - which features a wide range of musicians and bands on weekends - I knew I wanted to share this gem with you, The List Magazine readers. Featured here are just a few of the images captured by Susan during her visit. I’ve always admired her ability to capture the beauty in just about everything, so I wasn’t surprised when she came back with these amazing images of these beautiful creatures. Baiting Hollow is now celebrating its five-year anniversary, and I encourage you to visit them and see firsthand why they made The List. Meet the rescues. Hear their inspiring stories of transformation. Get to know the owners, who are equally as passionate about their wines as they are about their horses. And taste the special collection of delicious wines named after some of their most beautiful rescues, and whose proceeds go toward the care of rescues not just here at Baiting Hollow, but via a new fundraiser program across the country.

at home. Their ten guest rooms feature European linens and luxurious mattresses, flat panel TV’s with premium channels and free hi-speed wireless internet. Guests can enjoy a sumptuous breakfast each morning on the Inn’s 75-foot wraparound porch, as well as complimentary snacks and chilled spring water. As one reviewer stated, “I would recommend this place to anyone who likes nice, genuine hosts and a beautiful place to stay within walking distance of everything Greenport has to offer. I will definitely be back!”

Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard and the other four aforementioned vineyards are a perfect place to spend an afternoon pampering the senses. Enjoy the season, breathe in the fresh vineyard air, listen to some inspiring stories of each of the winemakers and take in the beautiful atmosphere.

If you are looking to make your visit to the vineyards more of a weekend outing, or perhaps a mini-vacation, The Bartlett House Inn Bed & Breakfast is a great option. Located in the heart of Greenport, just a five-minute walk to many of the local North Fork restaurants, boutiques, galleries, antique shops and village beaches – as well as two highly recommended restaurants, First & South and The Frisky Oyster - The Bartlett is a beautiful Classic Revival-style mansion with spacious common areas and 10 guest rooms. To Change Or Not To Change?

ENTREES AND PASTAS NOW OPEN SEVEN DAYS FOR DINNER

Continued from Page 10 Perhaps it won’t be a career change that will pay the bills; maybe it will start as a hobby, a second career perhaps? Take some classes of what you enjoy. I had a student who loved photography. He wanted to transition his love of photography into a business. He needed to take the steps to begin that transition. Your plan doesn’t come to you; you design your plan. Take a class, join a group, and begin thinking of how you can develop this change. Start the process and begin to feel good about it. Whatever you decide to do… embrace the change, choose your transition and develop your plan and journey. Live it! Enjoy it! Jean and Garrett started out enjoying each other’s fun, friendship, laughter and compatibility. This eventually led to a committed relationship, sharing families, friendships and real-life experiences. They have become the “go to” couple for guidance and advice on everything. The small, synthetic putting green keeps the kids entertained during parties when the pool is not in the cards for the day. It also maintains an open green space, without lawn maintenance equipment having to cross the patio.

The cabana features many accessories for entertaining and convenience, including a bathroom, washer/dryer, linen closets, full-size fridge and kitchenette. The outdoor covered bar area sports a beer and soda tap, granite counters, sinks, storage cabinets and an outdoor widescreen TV. There is also a covered outdoor shower with saloon doors for modesty. The raised spa is flanked by annual planting pockets for tropicals. The raised-beam wall terminates at two round stone piers. Atop these piers are two fire fountain urns from which water spills into the pool, adding a dramatic effect.

The backyard functions primarily as a summer space, so planting emphasis is placed on tropicals, flowering annuals and summer flowering shrubs. Narrow growing evergreens are used to create privacy along the side yard and behind the pool. This creates an inviting entry and a warm, cozy backyard for family gatherings. Terri Associates views themselves as Exterior Decorators, whose mission is to take outdoor spaces and make them functional. Whatever you have in mind, they will help add pleasure to your life and value to your property. 917.559.7821

The Key to Beauty is keeping it simple. Healthy Skin is where it starts….

Q. Do you have any favorite makeup tips that you can share with us?

The right skincare fights aging. We can reverse the signs of aging with this recipe in radiance. Start your new skin care line, and then follow it diligently. Don’t skip on serums, anti-oxidants and creams. Visit the spa religiously. Follow your anti aging routine… designed by our beauty experts and personalized for you.

A. Yes! As a makeup artist for over 25 years, one of my greatest tips of all is about mascara. When you remove the wand from the tube, bend the wand at the brush, forming a right angle. When you do your upper and lower lashes, the right angle of the brush will give you better control for under the lash, and the craziest volume you will ever experience. When you’re finished, insert the wand back in the tube and straighten it back to its normal shape. Be careful not to snap the wand!

Q. What do serums do for the face? A. Serums are a secret weapon for women. Serums have a lightweight texture and a high concentration of ingredients, allowing high levels of nutrients and vitamins to be optimally absorbed into the epidermal (skin) layers. A must need for anyone concerned with AntiAging!

Q. What is BB Cream? I heard it is a must have? A. Beauty experts are repeatedly asked what is BB cream! It’s a new multi-faceted and benefit-packed powerhouse. This innovative tinted cream nourishes, primes and evens skin tone, as well as strengthens and protects the skin in one simple step. Upon application, skin immediately appears more even, hydrated and luminous. In addition, it protects against UV damage with a broad spectrum SPF 30. Over time, age defying treatment promotes cell health, strengthens elasticity and restores skin’s youthful glow. Q. I am beginning to notice I have fine lines around my mouth area what can I do? A. Even fine lines around the mouth can be a real eye sore for women. Non Ablative Lasers can be very effective without any down time; in fact, this can be done on your lunch hour and no one will know! Deep wrinkles, such as smile lines, may sometimes need fillers or other injectables to smooth out the lines.

Cancer is a reset button. You get so busy with life – and then suddenly life stops when something like this happens. It resets your life and how you live it. It brings you back to what’s really important. The color Pink and breast cancer only began their partnership in 1991 at a New York City Susan G. Komen Foundation race, where pink ribbons were handed out for the first time. From there, breast cancer survivor Evelyn Lauder of Estee Lauder hooked up with Self magazine to make “Pink” breast cancer’s signature color. It took off like wildfire. Today, you can’t open a yogurt or drink a can of soda without being reminded by a pink ribbon to look for early signs of the disease – and it’s working. A 2012 American Cancer Society report shows the breast cancer mortality rates declined 2.2% annually from 1991 to 2001 due to advancements in treatments and early detection, and an increase in awareness. - Amanda Lisk

Be proactive about your breast health - 80% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history. Early detection is the key! Be brave, make your appointment and bring a friend! Let’s celebrate women’s health!

-Dr. Ilene Gewirtz, MD, FACOG, Gynecologist The List Magazine wishes to give special thanks to The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition, FactFoundation.Org and all the wonderful organizations, volunteers and Long Islanders who are so dedicated in their quest to help raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer and other women’s health concerns. We are happy to help those who help others by giving back and getting their word out in print. Please feel free to contact us. 917.559.7821

Juice once a day. We suggest a mix of carrot, beet, kale, spinach, ginger, lemon and garlic. Take one to three shots of wheatgrass and E3 Live daily. Wheatgrass is a living raw food that helps to detoxify, energize and cleanse the liver, and it is said to have anti-cancer properties. E3 Live, a blue-green algae (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, or AFA), is a well-known source of over 64 vitamins and minerals - and is said to stimulate immune cell migration, the process that gets them where they need to go. If you get the sniffles, take Oscillococcinum, Echinacea or Astragalus. Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic medicine popular in France that is marketed to relieve flu symptoms. It is, oddly enough, derived from duck liver and heart. Echinacea, which comes in pill or tea form, and Astragalus, one of the most important herbs in Chinese medicine, are both thought to support the immune system. I personally can attest to the efficiency of this regiment. I rarely catch a cold in the winter, and when I do, I bounce back quickly. These are definitely habits to live by. You are only as old as you feel… so the saying goes. Of course, to keep biological entropy at bay (the official term for deteriorating body systems), eat nutritiously, sleep 8 hours a night, exercise daily and go for routine medical check ups. Besides biology and genetic factors, I am far more interested in our inner life, filled with stories and beliefs Continued on Page 25

You are only as old as you feel… Continued from Page 24 that we’ve woven together indicating how we live our lives. If you’re healthy, chronological age only really matters if you’re trying to get pregnant, or play professional sports. Last week, I asked a 10 year-old what was his favorite grade? He said, “Kindergarten, because it was easy and fun.” Wow, how our perspective shifts with age. Essentially, we play – we learn – we work. As we age, the combination changes, and sometimes we seem to lose the key. We want to play, and instead we find ourselves on autopilot, focusing on responsibility as caretakers of family and business. Somehow, there is little room for play or the joy of discovery. And there’s the rub. Without play, we feel OLD. When we were children, play was so simple and created out of nothing. As adults, how many of us create our fun on the go? If you want to feel young and rejuvenated, embrace life with passion, vigor and intention. Get creative, be adventurous and revel in discovery. Embark on meaningful and enjoyable work - or make a change. It is important to “recreate” each day to feel young. Implement a “Me Day” once a month where you pamper yourself, make dates with friends once a week, take an Adult Ed class, or start a mad money fund. Whether play or discovery - you choose! Is your smile aging you? Anti-Age your Smile “Poor tooth shade, shape or position can add up to 10 years to your smile. As we age, teeth wear and discolor, creating a collapsed and worn appearance.” Over time, teeth can develop yellow or brown spots and stress cracks, which age your smile. This can be corrected in just one or two visits with In-Office Teeth Whitening (BriteSmile), Cosmetic Bonding or Porcelain Laminate Veneers to make you look healthier, more attractive and rejuvenated. Interestingly, the number of adult orthodontic patients is steadily rising because it is a known fact that having a straight smile is important to looking younger. Most adult patients are now choosing Invasalign for orthodontics. This series of clear removable aligners will anti-age your smile in as little as three months.

Ask The Doctor

Marina Peredo, M.D., F.A.A.D. CoolSculpting vs. Liposuction What Is CoolSculpting? It is the first revolutionary, non-invasive, fat reduction procedure that isolates a targeted area of unwanted fat (i.e. belly rolls, love handles, back/bra fat) with an applicator that draws in tissue and freezes the fat cells, permanently eliminating them naturally through your system.

What Is Liposuction? It is a surgical procedure that suctions excess fat from under the skin, slimming and shaping certain areas of the body. Some Liposuction is laser-assisted, which melts the fat first, and then drains it from the body, which makes it less traumatic to suction afterward.

Does Either Procedure Hurt? With CoolSculpting, there is a pulling sensation when the applicator is drawing in the tissue. You may experience some stinging or tingling, but this subsides as the area becomes numb. It is common for the treated area to feel bloated, look red and swollen, and possibly bruise for just a few days. Because liposuction is surgery, you will be sedated or anesthetized, so you will not feel anything during the procedure. However, afterward, you will be sore and possibly dizzy and nauseous from the anesthesia. The recovery takes weeks and you may need to wear a compression garment.

How Much Weight Will I Lose? Both CoolSculpting and Liposuction are targeted for fat loss and to improve contour. They are not designed for weight loss and are considered ideal for someone who is close to their ideal body weight, but wants to remove stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to exercise and diet. Your clothes will definitely fit better, or even become loose after each procedure.

Will The Fat Cells Return?

Fat cells are areas permanently removed with both procedures. If there is a weight gain after the procedures, the existing fat cells in the area will grow larger.

Why Would I Choose CoolSculpting Over Liposuction?

either sedation or anesthesia and recovery time, which is dependent upon the amount of fat that is removed. Typically, the downtime is 2-5 days.

I am sure you have heard the term “non-invasive,” but that is what best describes CoolSculpting versus Liposuction. With CoolSculpting, there is a minimum discomfort, you can lay and watch TV, listen to music or check e-mails, all while the treatment is taking place. You can even go right to work immediately following the procedure. The reduction of fat cells for the treated area is about 22%-25%.

If you have a fear of sedation or anesthesia, or if downtime is a concern, then CoolSculpting is for you. If cost is also a concern, then CoolSculpting may be for you as well.

Liposuction, on the other hand, is surgery, which is considered to be “invasive.” This procedure does require

Liposuction, depending upon the treated area, can cost between $7,000 and $15,000. CoolSculpting, with one treatment, can cost between $700 and $2,800 per treatment. However, Liposuction is usually a procedure done only once. With CoolSculpting, you may want to repeat the treatment on the same area more than once.

Fall/Winter 2012 fashions are both feminine and fascinating. You can experiment with them in the most daring manner to stand out, or wear them wisely to look stylish but not too risqué. The look includes lots of lace, nude illusions, floral appliqués, plunging necklines, capes and more.

Prints, Prints, Prints… From colorful plaids to florals, prints can be mixed and matched together or worn with a solid shade. Leather… If all leather is not for you, there are fabric coats and blazers with leather panels as accents. Velour… It’s used in suits, as well as for separate blazers and pants. Changing into a velour jacket after work is a nice way to transform a more casual outfit into an evening look.

There are sexy, slim-fit trousers and chic baroque designs, romantic floral-printed garments, fancy suits and comfortable knitted sweaters to choose from. Colors are bold, but more subdued than summer. For head to toe tones, choose softer, more delicate hues like lavender, cantaloupe or honeydew. Some of the more conservative colors being shown are midnight blue and burgundy; an alternative is grape, which is quite unique and eye-catching. Metallic and shine always work for a more dressy look, and of course neutral colors never seem to go out of style. Black is still always the best neutral…chic and very elegant.

NOW TRENDING Creative prints are everywhere, and are mixed and matched with brocade opulence and embellishments. Oriental motifs are also hot right now. A great option to look both fashionable and sophisticated is to combine your prints and bold colors with more neutral shades for balance. Add a vibrant accessory like a scarf, handbag, hat or pair of boots in a color such as lemon, orange or magenta to make them the focus of your look. Also huge is fur trim on apparel and accent pieces such as bags, scarfs and hats. The large number of fashion trends for Fall/Winter make it possible for every fashion-conscious girl to find something to suit her taste.

For Him Fall/Winter Menswear trends are all about leather, prints, and luxe fabrics like velour. Clothing includes suit pants and jackets, shirts, turtlenecks and various sweaters and pullovers. Colors in menswear tend to trend toward navy blue, oxblood, brick red, various shades of brown, olive, purple – and, of course, gray. Bordeaux shades are hot, and are featured in 28 | The LIst Magazine

Military coats, trenches, double breasted suits and long overcoat styles linger for another season in the outerwear department. Also keep an eye out for hardweartrimmed fur coats or shearling collars, as well as accessories ranging from “man purses,” caps and oversized scarfs.

It’s a known fact that ladies’ fashion styles change more often than men’s, and most women are glad it’s not the other way around… But when it comes to the higher cost of cleaning a woman’s blouse vs. a man’s shirt, women pay a higher price! Here’s why… The biggest production cost for cleaners is their labor expense, the money they pay their employees. Most of their labor goes into the “finishing” of a garment. Finishing is a combination of machine pressing and hand ironing, which many garments require to achieve the desired finish. Many cleaners have special “assembly line style” machines that can finish the typical man’s business shirt without any hand ironing. These machines greatly reduce the time and labor needed to finish a shirt compared to a woman’s blouse, which sometimes requires as much as 100% hand ironing to achieve the proper finish. Depending on their equipment and the skill of the presser, most cleaners can finish three to four men’s business shirts in the same time it takes to finish one woman’s blouse. Women’s blouses come in an extremely wide variety and combination of different patterns, fabric types, trims and ornamentation. Plus, these variations can change dramatically from season to season. This prevents the machine manufacturers from developing presses that will fit the majority of women’s blouses. Whereas, men’s shirts have basically looked exactly the same for more than 100 years, and they are almost always made of 100% cotton or a cotton/poly blend. This stability in style has enabled the machine manufacturers to develop shirt presses that will fit the majority of men’s business shirts. Novella’s of Little Italy shares a recipe with The List Walking along the narrow, cobblestoned streets beneath the fire escapes of turn-of-the-century tenements, it is easy to be tempted at every turn by the sights, sounds and smells of Italian cuisine and culture emanating from the restaurants surrounding you. You are in New York City’s Little Italy. We like many of the restaurants in the neighborhood, but we usually end up at our favorite, Novella’s. I recently tried the most outrageous stuffed artichoke – easily the best I’ve ever had! It was served in a soup bowl and sat atop its own flavored broth, in which I detected a hint of garlic and lemon. On top were melted shavings of Fontina cheese, adding to the delightful taste. I dipped a piece of my Italian bread into its broth until all remnants were gone, then started to work on the tender artichoke leaves, relishing every bite of the stuffing. It was like a meal in itself! The best part of it all? We were able to get the recipe from the wonderful manager of Novella’s to share with you! Italians love to hear songs of praise for their cooking… I told him it was my job as a Publisher to find great treasures and to keep my readers in the know. This is a great recipe to try…

of Sayville

Voted One of Long Island’s Top 10 Family-Friendly Restaurants

Butera’s of Sayville, a family-owned restaurant, has been said to be one of Long Island’s favorites for family-style Italian food. With existing locations in Seaford, Smithtown and Woodbury, the coastline of the south shore is now home to Butera’s of Sayville as well. Customers may recognize manager Jerry Marlow, the former co-owner of Sayville’s Collins and Main, who attests that Butera’s winning formula of high quality fare at reasonable prices is what has made the restaurant so successful. Featuring a menu created specifically with large groups and families in mind, generous portions can easily serve two or more people. A la carte items can also be made upon request. Among the favorite dishes is the Scampi Limoncello, comprised of sautéed jumbo shrimp in a lemon-garlic limoncello sauce and topped with almonds, as well as the flavorful Stuffed Mushrooms, expertly made with spinach, sundried tomatoes, diced fresh mozzarella, bread crumbs and cheese.

Italian Stuffed Artichokes Yields: 6 servings | Prep time: 20 min | Cook time: 30 min

Ingredients: 5 cups coarsely-chopped bread crumbs 1 1/2 cups Parmagiano Reggiano or good domestic Parmesan cheese, grated 1 1/2 cups Pecorino Romano cheese, grated 1 cup chopped green onions 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley leaves 5 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon salt or to taste 1 tablespoon freshly-ground black pepper 6 large artichokes 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 6 slices lemon Preparation: Mix into a large bowl and add bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, Romano cheese, green onions, parsley, garlic, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper; toss to combine. Cut about 3/4-inch off the tops of each artichoke. With your scissors, snip off the pointed ends of each artichoke leaf. Rub a lemon on the cut ends to prevent browning. Slice off the stem end of each artichoke so that they sit up straight. Spread the leaves of each artichoke as much as possible, and pack in a generous amount of bread stuffing around each artichoke. Tap each artichoke gently to let any loose stuffing fall off. Stand them in a casserole or roasting pan just large enough to hold them in a single layer. Add water to a depth of 1 1/2 inches. Pour a generous amount of olive oil over each artichoke, letting it seep in. Top each artichoke with a slice of lemon. Bring the water to a boil, cover, reduce heat and steam the artichokes approximately 1 hour (depending on size of artichokes) or until the leaves pull off easily. Test for doneness by pulling out a leaf and tasting for tenderness. Check the water level after about 25 minutes, and add more if necessary. Serve hot or at room temperature. The stuffed artichokes can be prepared in advance and reheated before serving. Any leftover stuffing keeps for 2 weeks in the refrigerator and longer in the freezer. Option: Place Mozzarella or Fontina cheese over the top and place briefly under a broiler until cheese melts and begins to brown. Top with Garlic. Makes 6 servings.
