It’s not Christmas without Christmas carols. Christmas carols give me a feeling of joy when I hear them. I love listening to them when you’re going around the shops, finalising Christmas shopping, and when you’re in the changing rooms getting ready to open the Christmas ballet.
It’s not Christmas without eating, drinking and being merry. I love jumping on a train and a plane to spend time with the family. It’s rare that we all get together apart from that one time of the year – the holiday season!
It’s not Christmas without a Christmas tree. A few years ago my siblings and I returned home, travelling from across the world, to find there wasn’t a Christmas tree – it wasn’t the same. I love the smell of the pine and the ritual of decorating it together.

Charles Dickens’ famous story returns to the city of its birth in the Lyceum’s seasonal show

ony Cownie has a long-running association with the Lyceum. ‘My first ever professional job was at the Lyceum in a Christmas show in 1985/86,’ he recalls. ‘Since then I’ve appeared in many productions and directed around 30, so it’s a real home from home.’ For 2019, Cownie takes a familiar tale and twists it by going back to its genesis. Charles Dickens, while visiting Edinburgh on a reading tour, is said to have seen a tombstone of one Ebeeneezer Scroggie, who would inspire the name of the protagonist of the much-loved Christmas staple. A Christmas Carol has an open-hearted vision of Christmas that both pays respect to its religious roots and looks forward to a more secular celebration of goodwill, but Cownie introduces an intriguing historical detail. ‘Christmas wasn’t officially a time for celebration in Scotland. It was frankly against the law to do so,’ he points out. ‘That didn’t stop people though. There was a definite sense of rebelliousness about it – Scrooge wasn’t
the only curmudgeon putting a damper on the festivities!’ The Lyceum’s Christmas show is traditionally a step away from pantomime, connecting with the theatre’s year-round productions. This includes an active engagement with the local community, expressed this year by the recruitment of a carol choir, who are part of the play’s anarchic reclamation of the season. ‘This tight-knit group of rebellious carol singers defies the council ban and are constantly harassed by an irate policeman,’ Cownie explains. But it is not only the puritanical elements of Edinburgh’s past that are being introduced to Scrooge’s tale of redemption: Greyfriars Bobby turns up too. ‘He lives in Greyfriars Kirkyard which is right opposite Scrooge’s shop,’ Cownie explains. ‘What does he get up to? Each Christmas, in theatres up and down the country, classic stories are adapted for the stage, with local elements and in-jokes carefully weaved into their festive fabric. Gareth K Vile takes a closer look at two theatre performances set in their respective cities, An Edinburgh Christmas Carol at the Lyceum and Platform’s Mother Goose Fae Easterhoose

A
s a venue, Platform has always dedicated itself to a direct engagement with its local audience: its Christmas show typically reimagines a classic fairy tale through a very Glaswegian – and contemporary – filter. ‘Mother Goose features a 'bad' angel asking a 'good' angel to show them one truly incorruptible soul on Earth,’ says director Matt Adicott. ‘The writer Lewis Hetherington and I were quite taken by applying this to events of the day. Climate crisis, greed and morality all feature.’ Their Mother Goose, however, is slightly different, Adicott explains. ‘Mother Goose, daughter Greta and Bruce the Goose live in Easterhouse. Maw is seduced by the bright lights of the Fort shopping centre and all its glittering shops, bars and restaurants. There are also plenty of references to sights and sounds that will be familiar to many of those living in the East End. We're always really keen to celebrate Easterhouse. We've set Puss in Boots
in an Easterhouse veterinary surgery, Rapunzel in a local hairdresser’s and are very excited to bring Mother Goose to the party!’ While the show deals with serious issues, and fits elegantly with Platform’s vision for theatre that speaks to Easterhouse, there is a sense of playfulness in the production that Adicott recognises as an essential part of the festive production. ‘We were drawn to the idea of having lots of fun with geese and golden eggs,’ he laughs. ‘Working on the panto definitely feels more like a treat than a challenge. At this time of year, I am only too happy to try and fit in as many of the tricks, devices and conventions that I know audiences relish and enjoy.’ With plenty of funk, fun and humour, Mother Goose fae Easterhoose captures both the spirit of the story and its venue and becomes a central feature of Platform’s extensive Christmas celebrations. It may be in the heart of student land, but Paradise Palms is more than a student bar. The menu isn’t 100% vegan, but it’s not far off. Bean burgers, jackfruit crab cakes and a chipotle mac and cheese mean you get all the stomach-lining heartiness of a classic Christmas meal but without the meat.

loc al liba t io n s We’ve never been so spoilt for choice when it comes to spirits made on Scottish soil. To keep your festive tipple on point for 2019, Rowena McIntosh unearths some of the newest kids on the block

cotland’s rum revival is in full swing, and if the spiced variety is your poison, try Banditti Club Spiced Rum this Christmas. Launched this year, it’s named after a bunch of rogues who used to meet in Glasgow’s pubs. Banditti Club is matured in oak casks for up to 12 months and spiced with such tropical delights as pineapple, orange, cacao and allspice. If you’re on the fence about the spirit, the new addition to the NB family is described as a rum for people who ‘don’t do rum’. NB Light Fruity Rum is based on the North Berwick distillery’s full-bodied golden rum but has been modified to reduce the deeper molasses taste. Expect notes of caramelised banana and vanilla, and a fruity flavour. For a vodka option at your Christmas soirée, Eight Lands Organic Speyside Vodka was released this summer by Glenrinnes Distillery, located at the foot of Ben Rinnes in Speyside. The name Eight Lands was inspired by the eight counties that can be seen from the top of the mountain – on a clear day, of course. It’s made with organic ingredients, including botanicals sourced from the Glenrinnes estate. Your guests can enjoy marzipan and vanilla pods on the nose, with butterscotch and coconut on the palate. Meanwhile, the ginaissance continues with newcomers such as Glaswegin Original Gin. Launched last December, Glaswegin has been created to celebrate its home city. It’s distilled in converted railway arches in

Glasgow’s Tradeston and the super sleek bottle was designed by Glasgow School of Art graduate and award-winning designer Paul Gray. The botanicals include locally grown Scottish milk thistle as well as Italian juniper, Russian coriander and pink peppercorns. There are double local points for Aberdeenshire’s Teasmith, whose new release Teasmith Broich Single Estate Gin is the world’s first gin distilled with Scottish tea leaves. The original Teasmith Gin uses black loose-leaf Ceylon tea from Sri Lanka but this batch, of a limited 1000 bottles, uses tea leaves from plants grown at Broich tea garden on the banks of the River Earn in Crieff, Perthshire. Serve in a fancy teacup for extra afternoon tea vibes. Finally if you’ve got a whisky-lover on your Christmas list who favours a peaty dram, Highland Park Valfather is the one for you. It’s described by the Orkney distillery as the most peated whisky they’ve released to date. Named after the Norse god Odin Valfather, it is the third and final whisky in their Viking series, following 2017’s Valkyrie and 2018’s Valknut. The handsome packaging is the creation of Danish designer Jim Lyndvold.
