WISH LIST

CONTENTS Christmas is coming. As those decorations on the pillars outside the Dome on George Street have been hinting to us since late October. And whether you’re a curmudgeonly sort who thinks it’s just one big costly, over-tinselled fuss, or the type who has an annual cry at It’s A Wonderful Life and daydreams about riding your very own reindeer in Lapland, we hope we have something for you. Our gift guide gives some ideas – not only what your hard-to-please relatives may like to receive, but also a few things to add to your own wish list. They are sourced, where possible, from independent Scottish designers and shops, and we’ve picked out some of the best markets for local produce and crafts too. There are also tips on how to mix your own cocktails, who’s doing deals on Christmas dinners, useful info on when the ice rinks open, and lots more. Get the sherry and the National Lampoon’s DVD out. It is time.

SON PANTO SEA

OH YES IT IS! From local celebs in drag, to witches, sweetie showers and enchanted forests, the Christmas theatre season reminds us we’re never too old for magic Words: Allan Radcliffe HANSEL & GRETEL Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, Sat 3 Dec–Sat 7 Jan With its plucky child heroes, cottage made of sweets and wanders through a spooky forest, Hansel and Gretel is one of the most thrilling of all festive stories. Yet, its themes – which include famine and cannibalism – have brought it a reputation as one of the darkest of the Grimm fairy tales. For writer Alan McHugh, much of the pleasure of adapting Hansel and Gretel for a family audience comes from this distinctive mix of light and dark. ‘I think children like to be frightened when they go to the theatre because it’s a “safe” kind of fear in that when the lights go back up, everything is OK again,’ he says. ‘We earn the right to visit these dark places if we give the audience enough fun to balance it out. It’s the journey we take them on, and how we reach that happy ending that keeps them engaged.’ One of the key innovations in this year’s show is the inclusion of original songs by composer Claire MacKenzie, who has been involved in the creative process right from the very first draft. ‘Once [director] Guy Hollands and I are happy with our structure, and have a working script, I sit down and write barrowloads of suggested lyrics and send these to Claire, which she then sculpts into songs around her musical ideas,’ says McHugh. ‘The songs are developed in very much the same way as the script, in that they are batted back and forward between us until we are all happy with what we’ve got.’ As McHugh acknowledges, one of the biggest challenges for panto-makers is holding attention spans. ‘If the adults see their children enjoying themselves, they can relax and lose themselves in the story, and become kids again for a couple of hours. Hansel and Gretel has all the ingredients necessary for this: goodies, baddies, mystery, magic, thrills, fun . . . and more than a hint of danger.’

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

CINDERELLA

MISTER MERLIN: A PURE MAGIC PANTO

Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh, Fri 25 Nov–Sat 31 Dec

Dundee Rep, Tue 29 Nov–Sat 31 Dec

Tron Theatre, Glasgow, Fri 2–Sat 31 Dec

Its the original rags-to-riches story, and perhaps the best loved of all panto staples, but Dundee Rep’s Cinderella comes with a truly magical twist. Instead of toiling all day in the kitchen, in Phil Porter’s adaptation Cinders works for her father in a retirement home for elderly magicians and their assistants. When our heroine’s dreams of attending the royal ball are thwarted by her wicked stepsisters, she’s forced to turn to the retired magicians for help. But will their failing powers be up to the task of transforming Cinders from care assistant to fairy princess?

Having wowed audiences over the last couple of years with irreverent reworkings of traditional pantos, including Flo White and Mother Bruce, the Tron’s 2011 seasonal offering is a (very) loose adaptation of the Arthurian legend. When Merlin’s magic wand is stolen by the Great Bahooky, as part of the baddie’s cunning plan to achieve wizard world domination, the bearded magic man turns to the Govan Fairy and his puppet pals to help him brave Castle Clabber and get his mojo back. Last performed over 20 years ago, Mister Merlin has been rewritten by creator Alex Norton, with Tron artistic director Andy Arnold at the helm.

The Lyceum has a reputation for classy Christmas entertainment and this year’s offering is no exception. Neil Murray directs Stuart Paterson’s faithful version of the French fairytale in which a hideous beast surprises a merchant stealing his prized roses and forces him to send his beloved daughter to entertain the lonely monster in his castle. Belle and her new host strike up an unlikely friendship, but that’s thrown into jeopardy when the evil witch Crackjaw hatches a plan to destroy the Beast. A tale as old as time, given thrilling new life by the Lyceum’s Midas touch.

THE TREE OF KNOWLEDGE

JACKIE AND THE BEANSTALK

King’s Theatre, Glasgow, Fri 2 Dec–Sun 8 Jan

Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, Thu 8–Sat 24 Dec

Macrobert, Stirling, Wed 23 Nov–Sat 7 Jan

If fairy tales, cross-dressing and sweetie showers ain’t your bag, fear not. Thoughtful seasonal entertainment is fully catered for with this new play from acclaimed Scottish writer Jo Clifford. The inspired premise features philosopher David Hume and pioneering economist Adam Smith travelling through time to the 21st century and finding themselves in a society with endless knowledge on tap against the backdrop of a free market economy. But has the world really changed for the better? And what will these superstars of the enlightenment make of gay clubs, ecstasy and Silicon Glen? A funny and imaginative Christmas play for ages 14+.

Following on from the triumph of last year’s Snow White of the Seven de’Wharffs Johnny McKnight returns to the Macrobert to write, direct and star in this anarchic adaptation of a familiar winter warmer. When Giant Sleigh-Stacks nicks Fairy Mary Christmas’s magic wand it’s up to the residents of Skinto Row to attempt to save the Christmas Spirit. Dame Dot Von Trott and her two daughters Jilly and Jackie are the first to volunteer, but will the extortionate price of a flight to the giant’s castle force them to sell their beloved cow Daisy Moo-Moo? Great festive fun from the pen of one of Scotland’s most acclaimed writer/performers.

The wonderful Gerard Kelly and his tatty black fright wig may have gone to the great theatre auditorium in the sky but the panto mantle has been energetically picked up by comedy favourite Karen Dunbar, who returns to the King’s for this year’s seasonal extravaganza. Dunbar plays Nanny in that old chestnut Sleeping Beauty, which also features Keith Jack, runner-up in the BBC’s Any Dream Will Do, as the handsome prince battling to save his true love from the big snooze. Expect the usual mix of romance, thrills and laughs with a smattering of singalongs thrown in for good measure.

CINDERELLA King’s Theatre, Edinburgh, Sat 3 Dec–Sun 22 Jan If there’s such a thing as a panto ensemble in Scotland the team behind the annual beano at Edinburgh’s King’s is it. Year after year the traffic at Tollcross slows to a standstill as audiences flock to the venue to see Allan Stewart, bewigged and befrocked as the dame, Grant Stott leering menacingly as the villain, and Andy Gray in the role of the loveable underdog. With such colourful characters, zippy action, catchy songs and some genuinely funny gags, the King’s festive show is something of a gold standard among traditional pantos. And this year audiences are in for an even bigger treat as the triumvirate are tackling perhaps the most popular tale of ’em all, Cinderella. But, apart from the obvious pleasures of seeing Stott in seven-inch heels and a towering wig as one of the ugly sisters, what makes the King’s production of this much-loved story special? ‘We at the King’s always strive for something different and this year is no exception,’ says Stewart, who also co-wrote the show with Paul Elliott. ‘At the end of the first act we will have a magnificent original illusion which will amaze kids and grown-ups alike. Also, I think you will agree: to see a big Hibby in a frock for the first time will be quite a spectacle.’ For Andy Gray, who plays Buttons this year, the popularity of the King’s panto is down to the strength and familiarity of the ensemble. ‘I was away for a couple of years in the deepest Amazonian rainforest and when I returned last year I was moved by the welcome from all at the King’s and the audience especially,’ he says. ‘They know they’re going to get a good night out and arrive at the theatre full of anticipation.’ Allan Stewart agrees. ‘We’re a team and I like to think we make each show look spontaneous. We all know what each other is thinking and when I see that twinkle in Andy’s eyes I know anything can happen.’ 14 THE LIST CHRISTMAS GUIDE 2011

SILENT NIGHTS Forget battening down the hatches this Christmas season. David Pollock suggests you hit the dancefloor at one of these festive club nights

2 MANY DJS

NUMBERS

This one looks like being quite possibly the biggest club party of the New Year in Scotland, as Belgium’s Dewaele brothers – the boys behind Radio Soulwax and Soulwaxmas – bring their exclusive NYE 2012 DJ show to the Academy. O2 Academy, Glasgow, Sat 31 Dec.

The Glasgow taste makers warm you up for New Year with a pre-Hogmanay party boasting all the Numbers Crew (including Jackmaster, Spencer, Parker, Goodhand, Nelson, Dirty Larry and Nok la Rok) playing back-to-back for a sixhour hyperactive run through booty bass, techno, dubstep, electro and hip hop (and probably several other genres). Sneaky Pete’s, Edinburgh, Fri 30 Dec.

ONE MORE TUNE Glasgow’s finest new alternative clubbing space welcomes an impressive line-up from OMT, with Editainment’s disco duo Tiger & Woods and Glasgow’s own HaHaHa playing live sets. The extensive roster will be rounded out by DJs from Slow It Down, Chungo-Bungo, Itch!, i AM and Define Define. SWG3, Glasgow, Sat 31 Dec.

CLUB NOIR Scotland’s premier burlesque night once again presents an end/start of year party with a thrilling repertoire of themed performances and other treats in store. DJ Loveless and Sailor Tony will play a variety of vintage and modern music to get you in the mood. Classic Grand, Glasgow, Sat 31 Dec.

GBXPERIENCE A change of pace for the Arches’ Hogmanay party, as purveyors of retro rave hysteria Back to the Future present the GBXperience’s ‘GBX Anthems’ night. It promises to be a huge event with a line-up including George Bowie, Mallorca Lee, Korsakoff, Unexist (live), Outblast and more. Arches, Glasgow, Sat 31 Dec.

CABARET VOLTAIRE HOGMANAY There’s an embarrassment of riches at the Cab as James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) supplies the punk funk New York cool, Julio Bashmore drops deep bassy house and the soul flavoured funky grooves of Tiger & Woods keep the dancefloor pumping. Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh, Sat 31 Dec.

VEGAS! It just wouldn’t be Hogmanay in Edinburgh without a big Vegas! party. The jump jive big band swingers have found a new home for their annual extravaganza as The Loveboat Big Band and Missy Malone join the regulars for a night of glamour, jazz, cabaret and big laughs. Adam House, Edinburgh, Sat 31 Dec.

THE GO-GO Keeping it retro the Go-Go will be on hand for their ever reliable 60s pop, garage rock, northern soul and freak beat mash-up with added Gallic savoir faire from live guests Les Bof! playing an exclusive ‘party set’ of Boffed-up covers. Studio 24, Edinburgh, Sat 31 Dec.

BIGFOOT’S HOGMANAY An array of Glasgow’s finest underground DJs, including Simon Stokes, Quail, Christopher Kelly, Dave Scott and Wrick unleash their Hogmanay party on this Riverside venue. With visuals from Redux and [produkt], free stovies, fireworks and Bigfoot’s Funktion 1 soundsystem. 100 Stobcross Road, Glasgow, Sat 31 Dec.

THE OFFICIAL EDINBURGH HOGMANAY AFTERPARTY Mark Ronson will headline with one of his typically eclectic funk fuelled DJ sets plus expect electro, disco, hip hop and indie from Radio 1’s Jaymo and Andy George in support. HMV Picture House, Edinburgh, Sat 31 Dec.

The party ended for LCD Soundsystem earlier this year with a grand finale at Madison Square Garden in New York City, but it isn’t over for the band’s frontman and producer James Murphy. While scenesters across the world await his next move, the man who told The List on the eve of his band’s break-up, ‘I’m just going to do things for a while rather than constantly planning for the future – I like my privacy, I like real life’ hasn’t been going out of his way to keep his face in the papers. Yet he’ll be coming out of exile to play a DJ set in Edinburgh after the world’s biggest New Year party this Hogmanay. Not that Murphy has been in complete hibernation since 2 April, the date he said his old band would be enjoying ‘the best funeral ever.’ There was a fairly low-key DJ set at June’s Sonar festival in Barcelona, and he and bandmate Nancy Whang cooked and DJ-ed respectively at New York’s Le Fooding food and music festival in September, taking his post-LCD career in a direction which few expected. In terms of fresh music, however, there hasn’t been a peep, with only internet rumours to go on. One suggests he was spotted entering a studio and walking down Shoreditch High Street with Klaxons over the summer, a collaboration which would surely benefit the neonsmothered one-time darlings of the music press more than Murphy, you feel. A mooted split single with Chicago comedian-musician Reggie Watts perhaps has more credibility (the news came from Watts himself), but that seems to be a remix project. The sound of the future might be hinted at here — or maybe he’d rather just relive the good old days for now. TALKING TURKEY

What does Christmas day mean to you? Do you really have to go traditional with turkey and trimmings? Will Chinese takeaway do the job just as well? We track down some familiar faces and hear what happens in their house on Jesus’ birthday Interviews: Anna Millar

DANIEL SLOSS COMEDIAN My Christmas Day has been exactly the same since I was five. We wake up early – 7 or 8 o’clock – in my parents’ house in Fife. Over the next few hours family members arrive – we seem to have more every year. Every member of the family gets a couch or a chair to put their presents on. The older you get the smaller your space gets – my space is on top of the telly now! About 5pm, Dad covers up our huge pool table with four boards and it’s transformed into the biggest dinner table ever. My best friend has been with us for the last few years, and we don’t eat much the day before to prepare ourselves. Mum prepares for weeks in advance, decorating the house and the tree. She gets the biggest turkey ever, parsnips, gravy, roast potatoes: the works. She makes so much we’re feeding off it for a week after. On Boxing Day my dad and I make the ‘Moist Maker’ with the leftovers. Three pieces of toasted bread crammed full of everything leftover: the toast in the middle is drenched in gravy. It could kill you, but I love it. Alcoholwise, we start with mulled wine; then I move onto white wine, then a wee Baileys – because I am a bit of a girl. My mum loves a party game, so we have a ‘prize bin’ of items she’s collected throughout the year, and if anyone says anything even slightly funny, Mum shouts ‘Bring out the prize bin!’ and they get to pick out a prize. As the night goes on the younger kids go upstairs and the adults continue to drink: the Pictionary starts, the charades, the After Eight game . . . For me, though, it’s not just Christmas Day, it’s the run up too.

Watching The Muppet Christmas Carol, or Home Alone with the family, and them all shouting at the telly: ‘Look it’s you!’ whenever Macaulay Culkin comes on screen, because they think I look like him. That’s Christmas. BRUCE DEVLIN COMEDIAN My extended family live up in Dundee so myself, Keith [my partner] and the dog head up on Christmas morning with the presents and to wish them Merry Christmas. At about half two, Keith and I begin the drive back home for our Christmas dinner in Edinburgh. I’ve always loved the Christmas dinner thing. People get their knickers in a knot, but you can commit to it as traditionally as you want, or not. I love the whole decorating the tree with a wee mulled wine and Keith loves cooking the turkey and trimmings. I love the fact it’s always freezing outside. As a wee boy I’d always associate watching Wizard of Oz with Christmas, and though I am not religious, I always watch the carol service on Christmas Eve on telly. I like being home for Christmas. One Christmas I ended up in Amsterdam doing a gig. I spent the festive season walking round the Museum of Sex and eating a McDonald’s before doing a gig at night with a stinking hangover. Never again! I like to be

‘WE HAVE THE TREE ALL DONE UP LIKE A PROSTITUTE’

in Edinburgh and stay up late on Christmas Eve drinking a snowball or two and then going through the motions with the dog on the morning that Santa’s been. We have the tree all done up like a prostitute. After we’ve eaten turkey and all the trimmings, we get into our Primark sleep suits – they have feet and everything to keep you warm! – and watch the telly, while indulging in our drinks fountain, which I love. MARK MILLAR COMIC BOOK WRITER I’ve never understood those people who feel the urge to disappear for Christmas or talk about surviving the holidays. It’s like suffering through a delicious cake or enduring your favourite movie. Who doesn’t like time off work, hanging out with the people you love and getting loads of presents? It's mental. My birthday is Christmas Eve and because I have a big family Christmas tends to last about a week and a half by the time we see everyone. I'd love to say I’ve hit an age where I prefer to give than receive but have to admit that nothing thrills me more than tearing through a pile of presents at 6 in the morning. Like most people I think I try to make it as close to a childhood Christmas as possible, which means Broons and Oor Wullie books and a gadget to play with plus a couple of selection boxes for breakfast so I’m feeling sick at lunchtime. danielsloss.com; brucedevlin.co.uk; markmillarworld.tv 2011 THE LIST CHRISTMAS GUIDE 21

WEIN AND DINE Prepare for the holiday season in your own way – mulled wine in an armchair after seconds of Christmas pudding, or cocktails until the small hours . . . Words: Anna Millar POST-SHOPPING COCKTAILS AND PRE-CLUB DRINKS You’ve just cradled a steaming mug of glühwein in your gloved hands at Edinburgh’s German Market (Princes St Gdns). But like a tiny Oliver Twist, you still want more, please sir, some more. Fear not, your choices are plentiful. Head to Joseph Pearce’s (23 Elm Row, 556 4140) for their moreish mulled wine with a ginger biscuit on the side; or for something more filling, their Swedish meatballs in apple sauce are a favourite. In the other direction, Old Town subterranean hangout Under the Stairs (3a Merchant St, 466 8550) does a memorable tequila, coconut and ginger daiquiri to hopefully make you forget your numb fingers and toes, with great beers on tap. For OTT festive cheer, head for a fiscally irresponsible libation at the Dome (14 George St, 624 8624) and gawp at the Christmas tree the size of your house atop the bar (see right). Along the road, any time is cocktail time at the cabaret-club inspired Voodoo Rooms (19a W. Register St, 556 7060) with live music and DJs in Bramble (16a the evening. Queen St, 226 6483) keep it oldtimey with their mix of forgotten classic cocktails, to be sipped in a Chesterfield, while enjoying their weekend DJs. Or escape the city centre hordes altogether at Roseleaf (23/24 Sandport Pl, Leith, 476 5268) and indulge in a Mad Hatter Tea Party (cocktails galore), while eating a Christmas cupcake with brandy cream. In Glasgow, Oran Mor (731 –735 Gt Western Rd, 357 6200) is an useful end-up for West End shoppers. There’s a Whisky Bar and After Dark Bar serving cocktails until 3am, and the option of heading downstairs for a gig. In the centre, the Arches (253 Argyle St, 565 1000) proves that beyond being a behemoth for arts talent, its food and drink isn’t too shabby either; their Christmas lunch and dinner menus provide traditional staples alongside confit of pork belly with potato, turnip and cider gratin (yum) and a glass of bubbly. The mighty Mono (12 Kings Court, 552 9458) has the added appeal of housing an independent music shop (for last-minute gifts), and delicious smoked tofu and vegetable Thai curry to warm you up; with home-brewed, alcoholic ginger beer to wet your whistle. If you’re simply looking to drink and go, Bar Ten (10 Mitchell Lane, 572 1448) should hit the mark, while across in Finnieston the Ivy (1102 –1106 Argyle St, 337 3006) shouldn’t be missed for its top notch rums and dirty martinis. OFFICE OUTINGS Eating en masse needn’t be a nightmare. In Edinburgh, Pink Olive (55 –57 West Nicolson St, 662 4493) draws on North African and Mediterranean influences and is doing a twist on traditional Christmas 22 THE LIST CHRISTMAS GUIDE 2011

dinner (turkey and bacon croquettes with spiced fruit chutney, anyone?) with three courses for £24.95, while across town Ghillie Dhu (2 Rutland Pl, 222 9930) offers a festive menu from noon until 10pm (£24.95 for three courses) and will throw in a ceilidh for good measure. Back in Glasgow, your workmates might just love you for suggesting Mother India’s Cafe (1355 Argyle St, 339 9145), for tapas-style Indian dining, or in the Merchant City, Guy’s Restaurant and Bar (24 Candleriggs, 552 1114) offers turkey-avoiders everything from sushi to steak pie. NON-CONFORMIST MENUS AND FAMILY SPOTS If turkey’s feeling dreadfully 2010, globe trot it to Edinburgh’s Kampong Ah Lee (28 Clerk St, 662 9050), which offers seriously good, wallet-friendly Malaysian soul food, or opt for the veggie callings of Henderson’s in the New Town (94 Hanover St, 225 2131), with its wholesome food, and colouring pages and crayons to entertain little ones – and stop them from asking you again how many days till the man comes down the chimney. Back in Glasgow, the ever Criterion (568 excellent Dumbarton Rd, 334 1964) offers a loving homage to a bygone café with a Scots Christmas menu. (They had us at white onion and parmesan soup. By the time we got to the mulled wine trifle, that just seemed like showing off.) Or to get some bang for your buck in a slightly more unusual venue, there’s always the special Christmas menu at Glasgow’s Riverside café after a look round the Riverside Museum (100 Pointhouse Pl, 287 2720) or a night out at Edinburgh’s Electric Circus (36 Market St, 226 4224), where they’ll tailor your night – from £4 for a basic session of karaoke in a private booth – up to a full Christmas party for 300 guests with food, live music and DJs. DEALS AND POSH MEALS Edinburgh’s Grain Store (30 Victoria St, 225 7635) is a find all yearround, particularly if you like drinking good red wine out of a massive glass, but their two-course Christmas lunch (£22) and dinner (£30) menus featuring oystsers, pheasant and partridge make it worth a festive visit. Elsewhere grab a table, if you can, at the newly Michelin-starred Castle Terrace (33–35 Castle Terr, 229 1222). In Glasgow, the legendary Ubiquitous Chip rarely disappoints (12 Ashton Lane, 334 5007), boasting such lip-smackingly good fare as Oban-landed squid and Inverurie sirloin. Bo’Vine Meats and Wines nearby (385 Byres Rd, 341 6540) offers equally hunger-inducing Perthshire venison carpaccio, served with a shot of ruby red sloe gin, and a prune and armagnac cheesecake for pudding.

For children there are Jelly Cat toys, Toby Tiger organic clothes, Starchild shoes and lots of wooden toys for all ages.

Independent fashion boutique Eden presents an exclusively different selection of designer womenswear, accessories and jewellery from Spain, Italy and beyond. There is an amazing range of silver designer Jewellery, semi-precious stones, fashion jewellery, accessories plus beautiful Christmas decorations and gifts carefully sourced from around the world.

Rather than being upset by the cold, damp evenings, Hamilton’s have chosen to embrace the season with a new Christmas menu; braised beef with black pudding or roast butternut squash with cranberries and Strathdon Blue get our vote. SAY IT WITH . . .

AVOUCHER Fussy relatives? Or a tough-to-impress friend? Ditch the bubble bath gift sets and novelty gadgetry (you know they’re going straight to the charity shop anyway) and offer up a memorable experience instead ENVIABLE MOVES AND A WASP-LIKE WAIST?

ROSY CHEEKS AND AN ADRENALINE RUSH?

Grant your friend or special somebody their wish to become Lord of the Dance, with a gift card for Dance Base. The credit can be used towards drop-in classes (eg West African dance, ballet for lunch etc, at £6.50 for one hour) or a ten-week block of lessons. A new term begins on Fri 7 Jan, and bookings can be made online, over the phone or in person from 10am on Sat 3 Dec. ■ Dance Base, Grassmarket, Edinburgh. Book online at dancebase.co.uk, or call 0131 225 5525 for info.

Furnish one of your more active friends with a voucher for a ‘learn to ski’ day out (£175), a snowboarding weekend pass (from £21 for four hours), or a sledging session (£15 for an adult, for 45 mins) at SNO!zone. Midlothian Snowsports Centre at Hillend also offers a two or threehour practice session (£17 or £22) and sell gift vouchers in £5 or £10 multiples. Sadly, the frankly amazinglooking rubber doughnut ‘tubing’ sessions they run are only for kids. Throw in a hipflask of something to warm your friend’s cockles at the end of a tough day on the slopes, (or perhaps one of those padded coccyx bone protectors – depending on their level of expertise) and it’s a done deal. ■ SNO!zone at Braehead, near Glasgow offers gift vouchers – available in £1, £5, £20 or £50 amounts. Buy online at snoshopuk.com, or call 0871 222 5672. Midlothian Snowsports Centre at Hillend, call 0131 445 4433 to book, and get info at midlothian.gov.uk

SOFT SKIN AND BLISSFUL CALM? A hot stone massage at Edinburgh’s Zen salon (from £62) should warm the bones of even the frostiest, Scroogiest, and most ‘bah humbug’ of your friends. Or give them the gift of soft-as-a-baby’s-bum skin, with a voucher for one of Zen’s Elemis ‘exotic lime and ginger salt glow and massage’ treatments (£78). If the purse strings aren’t quite that elastic, you could always sign up online for Glasgow’s and Edinburgh’s Great Deal, where in the past they’ve been known to offer two-hour massages with a manicure and herbal tea in Glasgow city centre for £19; or a gent’s haircut, luxurious hot towel shave and a cold beer for a measly tenner. ■ See todaysgreatdeal.com for info. Zen Lifestyle, 9 Bruntsfield Place, 2–3 Teviot Place or 84 Hanover Street, call 0131 226 6777 or book online at zenlifestyle.com. Gift vouchers are available for any amount, or you can purchase a specific treatment. They are valid for one year and can be redeemed for treatments or products. 40 THE LIST CHRISTMAS GUIDE 2011

AN ANTI-BOREDOM AMULET? . . . Also known as a membership card to places of cultural interest. The newly reopened National Museum of Scotland offers annual membership (£26), which grants you discounts in their café and shop, plus free entry to paying exhibitions, including the upcoming Fascinating Mummies, due to open in February (normal adult ticket price is £9). Historic Scotland do a similar membership with discounts in their cafés and shops (£45 per year and they’ll chuck in three extra months for free if you book online.) Castles, neolithic villages, food markets, geology walks and, er . . . a gasworks museum could soon be all yours to discover. ■ Book online at nms.ac.uk or members.historic-scotland.gov.uk

A BIT OF POSH FOR AN EVENING? There’s little that lifts the spirits quite like a night away from the washing up/bad telly/general drudgery of life spent in a top boutique hotel. Give someone the gift of escape with a hotel voucher. Malmaison sell online vouchers – to cover a night’s stay you’ll need to top it up with £90 (or £140 for a dinner, bed and breakfast package). Hotel du Vin offers similar packages. In both cases vouchers can be used to pay for drinks, food or spa treatments, regardless of whether you’re staying. The canny gift buyer will, of course, be buying this with an invite in mind . . . and why not. Christmas is about giving and receiving. ■ Malmaison, 278 West George Street, Glasgow or 1 Tower Place, Leith, Edinburgh, 0845 365 4247 (booking line) malmaison.com; Hotel du Vin, 1 Devonshire Gardens, Glasgow or 11 Bristo Place, Edinburgh, 0845 365 4438 (booking line), hotelduvin.com

LIVE COMEDY DVDS

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE VERY TALL Amid the annual sea of comedy DVDs are a surprising lack of turkeys (though our copy of John Cleese’s Alimony Tour must still be stuck deep within the bowels of Santa’s warehouse). Three Edinburgh Comedy Award nominees deliver fine affairs including Greg Davies, the tall bloke from The Inbetweeners, with debut release Firing Cheeseballs at a Dog (●●●●●). Crazy parents, oddball pupils (Davies was in fact an actual teacher) and quirky moments from the ex We Are Klang man are at the heart of his show. Reginald D Hunter Live (●●●●●) is a spirited compilation of the themes that have brought the equally sizeable American oodles of acclaim and controversial headlines since he landed among us at the turn of the century. Women, men, men vs women, race, family, religion and society’s diktats are intelligently analysed but may have benefited from a shorter, more focused release. Russell Howard’s Right Here Right Now (●●●●●) is typically frenetic (frequently punctuated by shots of giggling young female fans) with a bit too much shouting and plenty of easy references to Come Dine with Me and Harry Potter. He hits the nail more flush when discussing his own bonkers clan, his mad parents actually usurped by a dotty brother. But topping this year’s tree are an Irishman (living in Scotland), a (fake) Welshman and an Englishman (at 6ft 7in, the tallest of the lot). Dylan Moran may insist he knows nothing about this far too-complicated world at the start of Yeah Yeah (●●●●●) but he picks at its bones with poetic flair and disgruntled elegance. Mark Watson Live (●●●●●) is another debut which skates across the best bits of his many Edinburgh shows; tales of urban menace and awkward social encounters remaining funny despite that manic Welsh lilt being replaced by his bona fide educated English accent. If Hello Ladies (●●●●●) does turn out to be Stephen Merchant’s first and last solo national tour, as he has threatened, it will be a lasting testament to a unique talent and further confirmation that he deserves to come fully out of the shadow of ‘his nibs’. Merchant understandably makes plenty of his physicality (the height and the funny face) in a show about his desperate search for a wife. Why not get him one for Christmas? (Brian Donaldson)
