“Let’s just pop in and say hello” were the famous last words of an afternoon wander, this time in a newer community corner of our wonderful town. But the enticing sounds of gentle chatter and laughter coming from across the Makers’ Yard drew us in. Before we knew it, we were cheering on the fabulous Bounds of Selwood four hours later - a little bit of drizzle was stopping nobody.

We feel like these darker Autumn evenings and cosy sofas have been patiently waiting so long through the seasons, it’s their time now. Yet the reliable flip flops sit longingly by the front door, pining for just a few more adventures. We blinked and the freedom of lazy summer days came and went.

So, when schools went back and the town whirred back into weekly routines, it felt essential to get out and cram as much as we could into the remaining days of daylight. We dutifully walked through meadows, sought out any coffee spot where the sun shone, tidied the garden, sorted old

clothes out, wrapped up for courtyard cocktails and danced under glitterballs into the night. We loved the dedicated enthusiasm at the Cheese Show and have been counting the sleeps until the magnificent Carnival processions come again. We joined the spectacular birthday celebrations of the Boulder Rooms and listened in awe to authors at The Accidental Book Festival. In each and every place, there was a huge sense of an open welcome and contentment of belonging. People finding their people, sometimes in the most unexpected places.

This month’s magazine is bursting with things to do, places to explore and events to enjoy.

Commit to joining this thriving community; volunteer your time and skills, try a new event or just change your habits to shop and walk locally more often. There’s so much out there, let’s not all hibernate just yet.

Apple Day

‘Apple Day’ was started in 1990 by Common Ground and aims to raise “awareness not only of the importance of orchards to our landscape and culture, but also in the provenance and traceability of food”. The weekend celebrates all things apple; from juice pressing to apple games, displays, recipes, cyder tastings and tractor tours through the orchards. Expect live music and DJs, applethemed menus as well as the ever-popular hog roasting on a spit over fire for the carnivores!

Quilting Workshop

American Museum, Fri 6th October, 10am - 4pm, £55

This workshop explores quilt design and composition, in particular exploring variations of the traditional ‘log cabin’ or ‘housetop’ pattern and the use of dark and light tones to create impact. Initially paper collaging design options before moving onto fabric, you will be guided through the technique of ‘strip piecing’ pre-cut strips of light and dark fabric to build a single hand stitched 14” x 14” block ready to baste, hand quilt and bind.

Frome Pub Theatre

Frome-based ByWord is a brand-new pub theatre group which aims to foster new writing of all kinds. Pub theatre is small scale, immersive and ideal for emerging ideas. The group is now seeking scripts for small-scale plays which it hopes to produce early next year across a variety of pubs in Frome. For over twenty years this friendly group have been enjoying foot-tappin’ folkery and fine ale together. They meet on a regular monthly basis, the second Thursday of the month at The Lamb & Fountain and the last Tuesday of the month at The Griffin. You’ll find a range of instruments at the sessions (fiddles, accordions, mandolins, banjos and whistles) and anything from jigs and reels to old-time American/ bluegrass. Craft, Community and Connection

Craft, Community and Connection, making spaces in India and the UK, is an exhibition by local architecture firm Studio Saar, exploring how these themes are at the core of their practice. With studios in Frome and Udaipur (India), Studio Saar is a multidisciplinary practice working across the two continents, with the shared vision of crafting uplifting spaces for all life to thrive in. Amy Gadiaga Trio

Amy Gadiaga is a bassist, vocalist, composer and dancer from Paris based in London. She recently graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance where she studied double bass. Connecting the old school jazz singer tradition of musicians such as Betty Carter and Wayne Shorter with modern bops of artists such as D’Angelo and Kimbra, Amy was recently nominated for the Parliamentary Jazz Awards Newcomer of the Year and is currently Artist in Residence at The Roundhouse, London.

A Visible THREAD

Seam collective presents A Visible THREAD, an exhibition which explores the visibility and invisibility of thread. Through their unique perspectives and a diverse range of textile disciplines, fourteen seam artists have created new works to stimulate thought, connection and conversation. The exhibition aims to encourage viewers to rethink their relationship to thread, be aware of its materiality, its sustainability, its possibilities and limitations. The Vintage Bazaar

This wonderful fair has a well-deserved reputation as one of the top vintage fairs in the UK, having featured several times in the national press. Cloth itself is still considered a gendered material and there’s a gender divide between ‘high’ art and feminised craft. Until very recently, thread has been almost invisible as a medium in contemporary fine art.

Two young Ukrainian musicians - recent graduates from the Royal Academy of Music - perform a programme of flute and guitar music that includes, flamenco, tango and arrangements of folk music from their home country.

Frome Concerts Group is celebrating twenty years of bringing professional classical music to Frome. They offer an opportunity to experience classical music in a relaxed and welcoming setting. There are two series of concerts each year: four Sunday morning ‘coffee’ concerts in January, February and March; and four Sunday afternoon concerts in the Autumn. Sustainable Fashion Week presents: The Nettle Dress Film

Allan Brown made a dress by hand, just from the fibre of foraged stinging nettles over seven years. Stunningly filmed by award-winning documentary maker Dylan Howitt, The Nettle Dress follows Allan’s journey through seasons and years, foraging, spinning, weaving, cutting and sewing the cloth, before finally sharing a healing vision of the dress back in the woods where the nettles were picked, worn by one of his daughters.

A labour of love in the truest sense, The Nettle Dress is a modern-day fairytale and hymn to the healing power of nature and slow craft. It’s one story representing a huge groundswell of people rediscovering the joys of making. Actor Mark Rylance called the film “Exquisite and inspiring, beautiful and helpful for anyone suffering loss or grief.”

Rye Bakery, Cafe & Bar

Transforming the local grain economy

If you live or work in Frome, or have only visited, there’s a good chance you’ll know Rye Bakery. You’ll know it as a bakery and café, but also a centre of family and community: vibrant and buzzing. Baked goods and quality produce deliveries sustained us through the pandemic and provided an outdoor venue on Friday nights when we thought we would never socialise again.

In 2015 Amy Macfadyen moved back to her home town of Frome with her partner Owen Postgate, and their son, Alfred Rye, was born soon after. When the former United Reform Church was reincarnated as RISE, the opportunity to open a cafe that focused on local and sustainably sourced ingredients, family and community emerged and previous dreams became a reality. Owen bakes,

Amy manages and Owens’s cousin Cal leads the pastry section and the family has grown to include an incredible ecosystem of farmers, growers, cheese, sausage and other makers.

Since the start, Rye Bakery has employed over 200 local people and Amy says “these amazing people are what has made Rye what it is today”. Former employees have gone on to shape their own shops, cafe’s or start community projects.

It’s clear they haven’t chosen the easiest way: with the added challenges of the pandemic and huge rises in energy and ingredient costs, holding onto their ethos has been a constant challenge. “We want people in Frome to support the local farmers who choose farming methods that we believe in. We strongly believe this is the future of food - healthy for us, the land and the planet”. Holding firm to their beliefs, building roots in the community and creating seriously top quality products with local ingredients, means not only are they still here, but were recently listed in the Financial Times Top 20 Bakeries in the UK.

Amy and Owen are constantly seeking ways to tell the story of the farmers they work with, the traditional grain milling, the direct sourcing of ingredients such as sugar – all choices they make for flavour, but also to highlight the model of what they wish to see in the world.

Milling flour massively increases the nutritional value and flavour, as well as using locally grown grain, reducing food miles and contributing to a local grain economy. They mill around half of all flour used at the bakery in their own mill.

They understand that these choices make it less affordable for some and Rye operates a range of schemes through which food is available at lower cost. So people can experience food at its best, through Fair Frome, a pay it forward scheme and a food waste app called Too Good To Go.

Rye Bakery rapidly outgrew their Whittox Lane base and now, as the business moves towards its eighth year, they are still ever-changing. This autumn they are refitting the shop at Station Approach to create an intimate wine bar and pizzeria and the team have many exciting plans for the future.

October is all hands to the deck for producers in the Northern Hemisphere with harvest either still underway or in the cellar. This year’s wines are starting to bubble in their first ferments. The wines that I have selected this month are from producers working hard all year round to respect and enrich their natural environments in the vineyards.

AUTUMN SUPPER CLUB

The popular Autumn Supper Club is back, under the Bath stone arches of the cloisters at the Bennett Centre on Vicarage Street. The seasonal autumnal menu is centered around slowcooked meats, wild mushrooms, stuffed seafood with robust flavours, earthy veg encased in pastries and pies, as well as homemade sugar doughnuts paired with the last of the hedgerow berries. The dining experience is social and includes sharing plates and platters, and everyone is welcome from groups to singles. Cocktails, wine list and soft drinks are available to complement the exceptional food.

Interior Design Haven at Chaldicott Barns

There’s something rather wonderful happening on the border of Dorset and Wiltshire. It comes in the shape of a former dairy farm which has been transformed into a vibrant trading hub with the pulling power to attract the sort of businesses more normally associated with vibrant London High Streets, not sleepy rural backwaters.

Brands such as Niwaki, Bramley and Compton McCrae have all put down roots at Chaldicott Barns on the outskirts of Semley in recent years, and in May this year they were joined by one of the UK’s leading furniture brands, Another Country.

Founded by entrepreneur Paul de Zwart, to whom this part of the West Country has been home for many years, Another Country was ahead of its time in business terms when it launched in 2010 with a sustainable collection produced in a workshop in Semley. The brand was built on the twin pillars of high-class design and environmental purpose.

‘I felt the design scene at the time was very focused on design for design’s sake, celebrity design, and things that clearly had no aesthetic longevity or even a nod towards sustainability on any level,’ de

Zwart said. ‘There was no talk, really, about how things were made, where they were made, about end of life and circularity’.

In 2010, after a career in magazines (Paul was the founding publisher of Wallpaper* magazine), the Dutch-born design enthusiast took another calculated risk by founding Another Country.

Thirteen years later the brand has come full circle. de Zwart has recognised the growing numbers of entrepreneurially minded, environmentally focused design lovers settling in the glorious green valleys and hills around Bath, Frome, Tisbury, Shaftesbury and Sherborne, and has brought the brand to their doorstep. At Chaldicott Barns, de Zwart and his team have created a haven for lovers of interior design. Calm, pared back and effortlessly stylish, Another Country’s showroom celebrates the honest beauty of their design.

MY FROME

I wish there was a bowling alley and more indoor activities for families in Frome.

There is a fabulous walk, just a little out of Frome, that follows the river through Vallis past the old ruins of Fussell’s iron works and the ghost of Frome’s industrial past. Passing by the remains of old mills dotted along the river and derelict lime kilns peeking out from the undergrowth, you can follow the path all the way to the picturesque village of Mells.

I have been Jean Valjean in Les Misérables and have represented the Southwest of England in the National Youth Parliament. I can play the didgeridoo. I also do early morning Tai Chi with Diamond Dan.

I was born in Frome. I love the creative community and the mix of urban and rural delights.

The rich history and architecture are my favourite things in Frome. And of course, the people.

My perfect day would start at the River House cafe, to tend to my caffeine needs with a flatty von batty and polish off a french toast with bacon and blueberries. I’d peruse our generous selection of charity shops, swinging into some of the wonderful independent shops along the way. A personal favourite is Dandy Lion for their vintage wonderments. I’d grab an artisanal ice cream from the Senso ice cream parlour at La Strada and eat it on the steps of St John’s church next to the gorgeous Via Crucis. Next, I’d head to the outskirts of Frome for a heart-racing afternoon at the Boulder Rooms. For the evening, it would have to be the High Pavement in the epicentre of Frome on the iconic Catherine Hill. Finally, Eagle Lane to enjoy some sexy little cocktail creations from The Hyde Away, Frome’s own premier speakeasy.

We’ve got some beautiful places to see in the local area. Heaven’s Gate by the Longleat estate is beautiful with its rhododendron gardens, and astounding views. I love strolling around the lake at Shearwater and exploring the vast forest. Fairfield Animal Centre outside Trowbridge is a firm family favourite.

The poem Desiderata by Max Erhmann is tremendously close to my heart. I admire Isabella Dorta for her writing and for making a safe space for young poetic souls in this world to find their voice. Poet Brian Bilston is a refreshing irreverent voice in our time; pure inspiration.

I am currently working towards my coffee diploma at the Artisan School of Coffee in London, and am looking to start a Barista Academy next year to provide skills and training to coffee-lovers everywhere.

Making other people happy makes me happy. Life is hard. It’s nice making a positive change in other people’s worlds. I’m a happy-go-lucky extrovert, surrounded by a world of fun creatives with my dream job. Do what you love!
