ISSUE 153 FEBRUARY

Rose Langley

I

t has been over a year since I last sat down and wrote a ‘Hello’. And six years since I last emerged, dishevelled and hollow-eyed from my first maternity leave. Today, as I return from my most recent ‘break’ (ha ha), I’ll admit to being in a similar state - once again, I have looked into the abyss of sleep deprivation. But in this circumstance I am not alone, and my situation unoriginal. Worse still, it is of my own making - I ask for no pity (though I wouldn’t mind a bit). I must add that the jollity that our newest addition This place is full exudes makes it all very worthwhile.

of heart, and it attracts people for whom that is important.

Over the last year I have had the immense pleasure of being a Frome resident once again. Not looking at Frome through the eyes of The List, and just pottering about, often aimlessly, with a baby I am desperately trying to subdue. To those of you who took time to subtly tell me my coat was inside out, wake me up from a standing nap, or just offer me some words

of encouragement like “surely it can’t be that bad!” - I thank you. The thing about Frome is, whether you have lived here all your life, or you visited once last year and never left, you’ll live here because you get it. This place is full of heart, and it attracts people for whom that is important. I have felt enormously lucky to have been enveloped by the affections of this community during the last year. Admittedly most people just wanted to cuddle the new arrival, but I got my share of kindly attention too. As I return to the helm of the Good Ship List, I realise that 2024 marks ten years since I bought this modest little magazine from one of its originators, Fay Goodridge. A decade of ‘Hellos’ and of marvelling at the exceptional town I am so lucky to call home. I wonder what Frome will look like in another ten years? As well as saying a big Hello to the wonderful List readers, I must also say a huge thank you to Emma and Morag, who looked after this modest mag with the enthusiasm and care that I have come to love them for.

Lu in Luland - Self Love Revolution

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (film)

Merlin Theatre, March 8th, 7.30pm, £15

Merlin Theatre, February 15th, 2pm, £4

Lou Featherstone aka Lu in Luland is a confidence queen and leader of the self love revolution. An accidental middle aged influencer, she’s a selfconfessed bad feminist and is dedicated to growing old disgracefully. Lou is driven by a deep sense of purpose, to connect humans and empower women to accept themselves as they are, find their confidence, to embrace the fear and find their voice and inner strength. Join Lou on International Women’s Day as she shares all the glorious, hilarious, painful, life-changing turns on her own very personal journey to self love.

A treat for those on half term, with the first instalment of The Chronicles of Narnia. During the World War II bombings of London, four English siblings – Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy – are evacuated from the city to the country home of Professor Kirke. While playing a game of hide-andseek, Lucy discovers a wardrobe and hides inside. To her astonishment, she finds herself transported to a magical world called Narnia. As the four siblings explore this fantasy land, they will meet the lion Aslan, the evil White Witch, and fight to save Narnia, making many fantastical friends along the way.

Stolen Moments is a regular offering from the man behind Frome Jazz Club, Keith Harrison-Broninski, Christ Church and Frome FM. Keith will be at the grand piano in the beautiful Christ Church, with special guests from the many great jazz players who live and perform locally. Organised in partnership with Frome FM, each concert is recorded and broadcast the Sunday and Wednesday before the next concert. Concerts take place on the second Saturday of each month, and this February will see performances by vocalist Rosanna Schura and violinist Nathan Mansfield, playing the gorgeous music of Burt Bacharach.

» the list recommends « Frome Concerts Group presents: Meraki

Rook Lane, February 18th, 11.30am Formed in 2013, Meraki are Meera Maharaj on flute and James Girling on guitar. This duo shares a passion for chamber music that extends to jazz, Latin American and European folk, and works by contemporary composers. In 2019, they reached the final of the Royal Over-Seas League Competition in London. On the 18th they will be performing arrangements of Brazilian and American songs as well as Schubert’s wonderful Arpeggioni Sonata.

Sing-a-ling and The Kindness Connection From February onwards, Sing-a-ling will be visiting Frome care homes with The Kindness Connection, offering a chance for care home residents to experience the joys of music making with pre-school children. The intergenerational music sessions are set to take place on the second and last Tuesday of each month in Catherine House and Rossetti House in Frome. Willow Harwood from Sing-a-ling is inviting families with babies and pre-school children to come along and take part in The Kindness Connection. In regularly bringing children into care homes to sing, play music and socialise, it is hoped friendships will be forged and feelings of loneliness and isolation will be reduced. Willow says, “Too often, families live far apart from their elderly relatives, and young children lack opportunities to connect with older members of our community and vice versa. There is a wealth of research to suggest that spending time connecting with others, especially whilst partaking in musical activities, helps to boost wellbeing, and reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation in care home residents. The idea behind this project is a simple yet effective way to bring a bit of sunshine into care homes and enjoy music making as part of a group.” Book to take part via www.bookwhen.com/singaling123 @thekindness.connection | @singaling_music 8

A Magnificent Makeover for The Full Moon At Rudge

J

ust outside Frome, in the small village of Rudge, sits the Full Moon. This pretty white-washed pub underwent a huge rejuvenation project after a new owner bought it in late 2019. “The old bar and taproom were fully refurbished throughout lockdowns and had its first drinkers in April 2022. We have aimed to keep it homely and sympathetic to the old girl’s heritage, but with a stylish twist,” explains General Manager, Richard. “Following that, we reopened the five letting rooms last April with the aim of offering comfort, luxury and a homely feel, but with all the modern amenities you would expect from a top class hotel. And towards the end of 2023 we completed the refurbishment of the Garden Room, formerly the skittle alley. It’s a wonderfully light and airy room, perfect for parties, with room for up to sixty seated guests and with lovely views of the garden.”

Richard has a wealth of knowledge and experience, having previously run sites that have won Michelin Pub of the Year, AA Pub of the Year and Hotel of the Year from the Sunday Times. The Full Moon remains completely independent and free of any ties to a brewery, meaning the team can go their own way and be guided by their own principles. “Everything we do at the Full Moon is guided by our goal of being as eco friendly and sustainable as possible,” says Richard. Expect to see high welfare produce from local suppliers, vegetables and herbs from their kitchen garden, and the odd generous local. “We carry our passion for sustainability through everything we do, down to the tiny details, for example, the plantable wildflower pencils on the desks in all our rooms.” 10

Richard has a wealth of knowledge and experience, having previously run sites that have won Michelin Pub of the Year, AA Pub of the Year and Hotel of the Year from the Sunday Times. The kitchen team bring years of knowledge from working in the UK and internationally, and you can see their strong influence on the menus. “We aim to keep the classics classic and not go too crazy, putting our own ’spin’ on things. That said, we have a great team of chefs who like to take what is best from the sea and the land and create some truly special dishes.” Overnight guests can expect luxury and comfort, with a lot of thoughtful finishing touches, including Bramley toiletries, huge beds, crisp white sheets for the perfect night’s sleep, followed by a bulging continental buffet (including complimentary Bloody Marys) as well as a full English breakfast. “In the rooms, we are seeing a lot of young families coming to enjoy the Somerset countryside, Frome and

surroundings, and a good number visiting Longleat. Mid week, the rooms make a lovely alternative to the chain hotels for corporate guests.” The huge beer garden, with views of the Westbury White Horse, is the perfect place to while away warmer days, and is very dog- and child-friendly. Plans are afoot for a beer festival later this year, as are monthly quizzes and themed food nights. Being a village pub, the Full Moon is the heart of the community. “Our regulars are everything to us, many of whom have been drinking in the Full Moon for many years. We have great support from the village of Rudge, with locals often knocking on the kitchen door with armfulls of windfalls or surplus veg from their own gardens. As it’s just a short drive from Frome, we are seeing more and more people from the town making the journey too, which is brilliant. Everyone is welcome here.”

NEIGHBOUR UTILITY The New Kids On The Block

H

usband and wife makers, Dan and Nicole Dennett, will be opening the doors to their new Frome shop, Neighbour Utility, this February. Overlooking the leat on Cheap Street, Neighbour Utility is a homeware shop where you’ll find hand-picked vintage goods and homewares, as well as takeaway coffee and delicious gluten-free baked goods. “We aimed to make Neighbour feel like an extension of our own home,” says Nicole. “Frome is an amazing town filled with small businesses that support each other. We absolutely love the local community, filled with friends and young families. In every shop we’ve ever been in here, we always felt so welcomed, and we wanted to create something similar ourselves”. “Neighbour began through our shared desire to find simple and useful goods for the home. Each piece is individually chosen with practicality and real life in mind. Our homewares are produced with artisans and makers from across the UK, such as Leach Pottery’s beautiful hand thrown mugs and bowls, and beyond. These pieces are created by skilled craftspeople to become treasured items to keep and pass on for years to come,” Dan told us. Nicole and Dan also run Folkhaus - a Fromebased bespoke furniture company, and the shop’s interior woodwork has been lovingly handmade to their high aesthetic standard. Some of their furniture will also be available in store. “As makers ourselves, we love using natural materials, and will be showcasing some of our handmade pieces, such as vintage inspired benches, cabinets and shelving”. Nicole and Dan are experts at sourcing unique and eye-catching vintage goods that you would want in your own home. “We love that buying vintage offers a sustainable way to shop for your home and be conscious when doing so. For instance, we love vintage brass candlesticks which go along with our hand-dipped beeswax candles, and we really love mixing the old with the new”.

HIBI BOTANICS

FROME’S NATURAL SKINCARE COMPANY

H

ibi Botanics create powerful, natural skincare using ingredients that are 100% plant derived. Since starting in 2021, and launching the brand at the Frome Independent, Hibi has gone from strength to strength, gathering a loyal customer base both locally and throughout the UK. Hibi’s bestselling product, Glow Facial Oil, uses powerful organic oils including rosehip, argan, pomegranate and olive squalane, which are packed full of skin-loving essential fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins, which nourish and moisturise, leaving skin soft and happy. “I’ve tried so many shampoo bars, but they either fail to lather properly or leave a greasy residue. But this Hibi bar has me absolutely converted! My hair is clean, but so soft too. I love it!”.

Many Frome residents will be happy to know that Hibi will be bringing back their incredibly popular Super Shampoo. This solid shampoo bar became a firm favourite, especially with those who had previously found solid hair care less than satisfactory. One reviewer said “I’ve tried so many shampoo bars, but they either fail to lather properly or leave a greasy residue. But this Hibi bar has me absolutely converted! My hair is clean, but so soft too. I love it!”. Super Shampoo bars last a long time, replacing at least three bottles of standard shampoo. In February, Hibi will be opening up the register for a new Super Shampoo subscription service, with space for just 100 members, and bars will be sent out every ten weeks. Sign up via the website. Hibi products, including Nourishing Body Oil, Plump Hydrating Serum, All Over Balm and Cleansing Facial Bar, are on sale at two of Frome’s most well-loved shops, Oakville Naturals and Honey on the Hill, and are also available to buy online and from the Frome Independent Market. www.hibibotanics.com

FACES OF FROME Meet Dan, Kelly and Luna, the jackapoo, the team behind Dark Moon Chocolate and also Luna Plant-Based Kitchen, now based at the Good Heart Café.

Here they tell us about Luna Plant-Based Kitchen: We are passionate about providing wholefood plant-based meals that are homemade, full of healthy ingredients and that taste amazing. We love showing people that plants taste good and are not just for vegans, but something that everyone can enjoy as part of a healthy lifestyle. Tell us something interesting about yourselves. Kelly is an avid reader of all the latest research in nutrition and is also a personal trainer; I’m an artist and have a studio at the Silk Mill. What are your favourite things to do in Frome? We love to walk our dog Luna (the inspiration for the name of the business) around Frome, and she also thoroughly enjoys her weekly visit to Patsy’s Pooches to play with her friends. We enjoy going for a cup of coffee in one of the many different cafés. Kelly loves a good charity shop, and we are both fond of buying books, so frequent Hunting Raven and the new shop, Sherlock and Pages. Our favourite food shop is definitely Frome Wholefoods, who offer an exceptionally large range of foods for such a tiny space, and the staff are always really friendly and helpful. What makes Frome so special? The thriving independent businesses that all have a unique offering for the town. I love the sheer volume of really lovely people that we have got to know since moving here seven years ago.

DAN, KELLY & LUNA Luna Plant-Based Kitchen

Tell us your plans for the future We are hoping to grow Luna Plant-Based Kitchen over the next few years and see where it takes us. What do you do in your spare time? We both love to cook, explore recipes and read. Kelly is passionate about health and fitness and learning languages, and I enjoy spending time in my studio making art. If you could do anything/be anywhere you would be…We’d love to live by the sea and run some kind of space that combines our passions of food, art, health and music. Probably with a load of rescued animals too! About Luna PlantBased Kitchen and the Good Heart The Good Heart is a community initiative and nonprofit organisation situated on the high pavement on Palmer Street, with a focus on promoting kindness, encouraging health and happiness, and alleviating loneliness and isolation in Frome. During the colder months, the Good Heart is a warm space and offers free hot drinks for everyone. Luna Plant-Based Kitchen is based at the Good Heart, and uses the kitchen to provide food on a daily basis, for people to enjoy in the café, or to take away, including payit-forward meals for those who need them.
