My kitchen glows pink in the afternoon sun. This is not down to the pink-ish paint on the walls, but the effect of the light filtering through three giant vats of cassis that are readying themselves for my Autumn/ Winter hunker-down. I spent several hours picking over the blackcurrants earlier in Summer, removing leaves and bugs, and casting off the bad ones. This, it seems, is the kind of activity that I have become most interested in - using my hands, unhurried, and with a tangible outcome. I feel the same way about making bread. I grew up on my dad’s homemade bread, which he still makes, and inherited this habit, though I am far less consistent than he is.
I think that creating something as a regular habit is probably one of the healthiest things we can do. So often, in modern life, we are cut off from the making process, and therefore miss out on the therapeutic benefits of bringing something into being. Convenience, though useful, could be seen as the enemy of creation as we pop to the shop for our needs rather than hunting in the cupboards for the component parts, ready to get our hands dirty or sticky.
Over the past few days my son has been creating a set of Top Trump playing cards. He was bored with
the ones we already have, he decided to make a new set. As an active child who finds time indoors a little frustrating, it was so heartening to see him focus on his little project, and now he is the proud owner of a one-off set of Top Trumps that he thought up, made, and can now play with.
Making things is part of our human story. When we bake, draw, sew, build, make copious amounts of booze (wahey!), or create anything that wasn’t there before, we connect to a basic human part of ourselves that makes us feel useful, capable and alive. We live in a world where all our needs can theoretically be catered for, with cheap mass production removing the need to create in order to survive. To make, or create, often means to slow down and be in the moment. It’s something I can struggle with as I rush from pillar to post with work and family commitments, though I know it benefits me when I do ease up.
As we head towards Autumn (especially for those of you less enamoured of the cold and dark than I am), start thinking about how to use your hands to make and do, to help you slow down, be present and bring something into being that wasn’t there before. Kids get it - they need very little to get creative. And in reality, nor do we.
Let Love Kill You
Merlin Theatre, 23rd September, 7.30pm
Playwright and performer Marina Sossi premieres her bold and dreamlike new theatre performance this Autumn at the Merlin. Let Love Kill You is a hauntingly humorous and hallucinatory journey through memory, womanhood and the eternal battle between autonomy and fate. At the tangled heart of it all, our heroine Gloria teeters between myth and madness, poetry and purpose, love and independence, trying to escape the threads of history and the pen of a domineering narrator. Guided (and hindered) by a talking guru dog, a magical spider, gargoyles, gravestones and flashes of a mysterious white rabbit, can Gloria rewrite the ending before it’s written for her? With echoes of Plath and Hughes, this unmissable new play pulses with surreal, poetic imagery and original live music from Buffalo Gals’ Kate Lissauer. Let Love Kill You is a genre-bending story told by an impressive and versatile ensemble cast. Post-show Q&A and cake with writer and cast.

This Autumn, Frome once again joins communities across the UK and beyond to celebrate Sustainable Fashion Week (27th September – 5th October). For the third year running, the town’s programme is hosted by the Everyone Needs Pockets Textile Network, bringing creativity, conversation and practical skills to the heart of our wardrobes.
The theme this year is “Fashion Reclaimed” - a call to take back ownership of our clothes, our style and our impact on the planet.
Frome’s line-up offers something for everyone, from playful children’s workshops to hands-on mending, making, swapping and storytelling.
The week kicks off on Saturday 27th September with a free Make and Mend Day at Frome Town Hall. Expect to see fabric transformed into rope by Sanne Visser’s unique rope-making machine, a giant communal loom, visible mending, darning, swapping and plenty of conversation. Alongside this are bookable workshops, including Kids’ Scrap Studio, embroidery with Cathy Plummer, and upcycling with Anna Fraenkel - all on sliding scale pricing to keep them accessible.
The weekend continues with a clothes swap from Frome Wardrobe Collective on Saturday evening, followed by Retold Fashion’s Preloved and Vintage Fair on Sunday. Throughout, Slow Stitch Club will host workshops in sashiko and darning, reviving the joy of visible repair. The festival
closes on Sunday 5th October with Sewing the Seeds Frome’s Flax and Nettle Fair, sharing stories and demonstrations of local, sustainable textiles.
Behind the creativity lies urgency. The fashion industry is one of the world’s most polluting, devouring water and energy while producing mountains of waste. According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, every second a lorry-load of clothing is burned or buried. Each discarded garment represents not just environmental damage, but lost value for both makers and wearers.
Sustainable Fashion Week invites us to flip that story: to repair, rework, reuse and reclaim. It’s about finding joy in what we already own, swapping instead of shopping new, and rediscovering the power of craft and community. Bring your worn, loved or forgotten clothes, and leave with inspiration, skills, and perhaps something new-to-you.

Celebrate Local and International Art during Somerset Art Week
From 13th–28th September, Somerset Art Weeks (SAW) Open Studios invites visitors to step inside the working worlds of local artists, including three venues in and around Frome.
At Venue 148, Amanda Bee presents vibrant land and seascapes inspired by Somerset, Wiltshire and Cornwall in her lovely garden studio. Her semiabstract paintings, rich with colour, texture and memory, transform familiar places into personal yet universally resonant works. Alongside her original pieces, Bee will showcase limited edition prints and handmade cards.
Venue 147, The Station Gallery, hosts Artists in Dialogue, a collective born in 2022 to connect Frome-based creatives with Ukrainian artists whose lives were upended by war. Their exhibition, Odyssey / ОДІССЕЯ, brings together five local and seven Ukrainian artists, reflecting on displacement, resilience and the stateless language of art as a bridge across borders.
At Venue 146, in the beautiful village of Great Elm, Andrea V Wright opens her studio, continuing her exploration of form, structure and space through contemporary sculpture and collage.
With each studio visit, audiences can both support artists directly and engage with work that speaks to place, memory and global challenges. For full details, pick up the SAW brochure at Frome Town Hall, Black Swan Arts, or online at somersetartworks.org.uk

Frome Film Club
Season Fourteen starts this September
Frome Film Club is now entering its fourteenth season, with ten hand-picked films showing from September 2025 to July 2026. Films are shown at the Merlin Theatre, usually on the second Wednesday of every month at 8pm.
The season’s programme is chosen from recent releases and aims to show films that have not been shown locally or had wide exposure nationally. Films are selected from a shortlist that the organisers have watched through the year, via festivals, screenings and trips to independent cinemas. Season 14 opens with a political biographical drama from Brazil, I’m Still Here, the first Brazilian film to win the Best International Film at the 2025 Academy Awards.
Membership costs £30, which covers all ten films, and is transferable, so if you can’t make it on the night, you can pass your card to a friend. Members can also make use of a DVD library of films from past seasons or catch up on any missed during the season. The Merlin bar is open beforehand, so arrive early to enjoy the buzz with a pre-film drink.
Dates, details and trailers for this exciting season are all on the website. Numbers are limited, so signing up early is recommended: fromefilm.co.uk

Saddle Goose
Frome’s Natural Winemakers Step into Harvest
Since opening in early Spring, Saddle Goose has quickly embedded itself into the cultural and culinary life of Frome. The winery has been meeting locals at its Station Approach base, appearing at food and drink festivals both regionally and nationally, and running a string of events that have ranged from Frome Festival tasting specials to pizza-and-wine collaborations, Saturday tastings, private parties, and vertical samplings of past vintages. Beyond the events calendar, the team has also taken on management of two nearby vineyards which will soon provide an exciting supply of locally grown grapes for the upcoming harvest.
Harvest season marks the most dynamic time of year at Saddle Goose. English grapes grown under sustainable conditions reach perfect ripeness from mid-September through to late October, depending on the variety and the weather. The process is dictated entirely by nature: once the grapes are ready, the pace accelerates and it becomes all hands on deck. Volunteers often join the team in the vineyard and winery, witnessing first-hand the full cycle of natural winemaking.
At Station Approach, the sights and sounds of harvest include de-stemming, crushing, footstomping, macerating, pressing, fermenting, transferring, and of course, tasting. On harvest days, the winery’s barrel tables will be out, inviting visitors to enjoy a past vintage in the sun while watching the winemaking unfold. For those who would like to be more hands-on, Saddle Goose operates a harvest volunteer WhatsApp group, giving participants a chance to experience natural winemaking up close - sticky fingers and all - while learning the techniques that underpin it.
The team places strong emphasis on authenticity in its approach to sustainability. While terms such as “natural” and “sustainable” are often used loosely, Saddle Goose grounds its philosophy in action rather than marketing. All of the local grapes are grown with zero or minimal synthetic chemicals and fertilisers, and additional fruit sourced from other growers comes from certified or uncertified organic vineyards working to similar standards. Their preferred term is “regenerative viticulture”, a holistic approach to sustainability in both vineyard and winery. Once grapes reach the winery, they are handled gently and without synthetic products; nearly all work is done by hand, and only sustainably produced materials and packaging are used. During harvest, visitors can witness this philosophy in practice, tasting freshly pressed juice and observing fruit at its most natural stage.
Volunteering is a core part of the Saddle Goose ethos. At their managed vineyard in Combe Hay, just 20 minutes north of Frome, weekly volunteer sessions
Every Saturday at 2pm, visitors can enjoy a four-wine flight for £10, an introduction to the range of wines and ciders produced.
run every Wednesday from 10am to mid-afternoon, offering the chance to get green-fingered while learning organic vineyard practices. At the central Station Approach winery, opportunities arise at peak times, particularly during harvest pressing, grape processing, and bottling, for anyone interested in learning about natural winemaking methods.
For those more interested in tasting than treading grapes, Saddle Goose offers a regular programme of events. Every Saturday at 2pm, visitors can enjoy a four-wine flight for £10, an introduction to the range of wines and ciders produced. September’s calendar will also feature collaborative food and wine events with local businesses, pop-up tastings, and music heard among the barrels, creating a lively, communal atmosphere at the winery.
Alongside events, Saddle Goose is making it easier for locals to enjoy their wines at home. A summer discount of 10% off all online orders, with free delivery within a ten-mile radius of Frome, is now available by using the code THELIST at checkout. For those looking to stock up early for gifts or simply to explore the range, it offers an affordable way to support local production.
In less than a year, Saddle Goose has made a notable impact in Frome, combining the craft of natural winemaking with community spirit and cultural connection. As harvest approaches, the winery is opening its doors wider still, inviting residents and visitors alike to share in the work, the learning, and above all, the enjoyment of good wine and good company.
For more information, or to get involved in the harvest, you can go to saddlegoose.co.uk

FROME COBBLE WOBBLE A Welcome Return to a Beloved Event
The long-awaited return of one of Frome’s most legendary events has finally become a reality. The Frome Cobble Wobble is back this September and is already set to be one of the highlights of 2025. Since its creation in 2009 by Andrew Denham, the Cobble Wobble has captured imaginations well beyond its cobbled course. It has spawned Germany’s Cobble Hoppel, inspired Red Bull’s Hill Chasers in cities across the world, and brought international media attention to what began as a local experiment.
Starting at the base of Stony Street, the course takes a sharp turn onto Catherine Hill, climbing 179 yards before ending where the cobbles give way at the hill’s summit. This steep, narrow route is as breathtaking to behold as it is challenging to ride. With thousands of cobbles, a shifting gradient, and that tight corner
to navigate, the Cobble Wobble is a true test of both strength and skill. With raucous crowds pressed against every inch of the course, the Cobble Wobble is a sporting spectacle unlike any other. What makes it unique is the mix: international pro athletes rubbing shoulders with enthusiastic amateurs, families, and locals simply looking to join the fun. For some, it’s about the chase for glory. For most, it’s about the thrill of the climb and the roar of the crowd. To take part, or for more information, visit thecobblewobble.co.uk.

Mayfly Vintage Antiques and Interiors with Character
Based on the Wiltshire Somerset border, not far from Frome, Mayfly Vintage is an online antiques and interiors business with a reputation that stretches well beyond the South West. Established in 2014 by husband-and-wife team Helen and James Hanson, the business is rooted in a simple ethos inspired by William Morris: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” Every piece they source is chosen with this principle in mind, reflecting items they would be proud to have in their own home.
The name Mayfly Vintage harks back to the couple’s early days in Hampshire, beside the famous River Test, where clouds of mayflies appeared each Summer. Since then, the business has developed a distinctive style: an eclectic mix of rustic, French farmhouse and English country house. Their stock ranges from vintage furniture and decorative homeware to clocks, garden planters and seating. A significant part of their collection is devoted to antique lighting which is carefully restored and rewired, making it a favourite with private buyers for their homes as well as interior designers sourcing pieces for large hotels and restaurants.
Antiques are more than a business for Helen and James; they are a way of life. The couple travel across the UK and into Europe in search of unique finds, continually adding to their ever-changing inventory. James oversees the restoration of lighting and clocks, photography and the technical side of the website, while Helen manages the day-to-day running of the business and supports restoration when needed.
Their commitment to quality and character has earned Mayfly Vintage recognition in the national interiors press, as well as among designers, retailers and the film industry. Their pieces have appeared on screen in productions ranging from Harry Potter and Tomb Raider to Willy Wonka and Spielberg’s Masters of the Air. For the Hansons, seeing their finds come to life in such settings remains a thrill.
New stock is added weekly to both their website and Instagram page, with delivery available across the UK and worldwide. For anyone renovating a home or looking to bring individuality and character to an interior scheme, Mayfly Vintage offers a rich, carefully curated selection of antiques, with each piece carrying its own story, and each chosen with a discerning eye. mayflyvintage.co.uk

Ayurveda with Jo Webber
Ancient Wisdom in the Somerset Countryside
Tucked away in an old cider house near Frome, visitors can experience the ancient science of Ayurveda, often described as yoga’s sister discipline. As the world’s oldest healthcare system, Ayurveda offers a holistic “user’s manual” for living well, drawing on practices that encompass herbal medicine, nutrition, lifestyle, rejuvenation, detoxification and deeply restorative therapies. For those new to this tradition, the perfect introduction is a warm oil massage, renowned for its grounding, nourishing qualities. At the heart of the practice is the recognition that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Ayurveda works with each person’s unique dosha - their mind-body constitution - offering personalised guidance for balance and wellbeing. In Somerset, this expertise is provided by Jo Webber, an Ayurvedic practitioner, Hatha yoga teacher, and forager with more than 15 years’ experience. From her Batcombe health clinic, she brings together the sister sciences of Ayurveda
and yoga, offering health consultations that include traditional tongue and pulse readings, alongside tailored treatments.
Jo also shares her knowledge beyond the treatment room. This Autumn, she is leading foraging and wildcrafting workshops on 14th September and 5th October. These immersive days combine folklore, the medicinal uses of local plants, and practical demonstrations; participants can even create their own herbal treats to take home. With a background that includes a BSc (Hons) in Ayurveda from Manipal University in India, an MA from Oxford, and co-founding The Ayurveda Academy, Jo brings depth, authenticity and accessibility to her work. Whether through treatments, consultations or workshops, she offers a rare opportunity to experience Ayurveda’s ancient wisdom in the Somerset countryside. BLACK SWAN
resident artists exhibition 2025
From 28th August to 14th September 2025, Black Swan Arts will shine a spotlight on the extraordinary breadth of talent within its creative community through the Resident Artists Exhibition, held in the Long Gallery. With a special “Meet the Artists” event on 6th September, the exhibition offers audiences a rare opportunity to engage with the people behind some of Frome’s most compelling artistic practices.
For decades, Black Swan Arts has served as a hub for creativity, nurturing the careers of artists and makers through purpose-built studios and shared spaces. Its resident artists are chosen not only for their technical skill but also for their ability to keep the centre a vibrant and relevant force in contemporary art and craft. This year’s exhibition brings together the current cohort in a collective showcase, marking the first time their work has been presented together in this way.
The exhibition highlights a remarkable range of mediums and approaches. Painter and illustrator Sally Swannell offers finely observed depictions of British wildlife and rural life, created in emulsion and watercolour. Her work speaks to memory, belonging and the subtle beauty of the natural world. In contrast, Pete Hempshall explores abstraction, questioning perception itself through dynamic compositions where colour and form blur the line between surface and illusion.
The artistry of adornment is represented by Victoria Sackwild, whose jewellery and silversmithing practice transforms precious metals into sculptural forms inspired by the organic rhythms of nature. Equally committed to material exploration, ceramicist Jane Sheppard - a Craft Potters Association member with over three decades of practice - creates large-scale works that probe the tactile and human connection with clay.
Master goldsmith Daniel Musselwhite contributes both bespoke commissions and collections in silver and semi-precious stones, blending precision with innovation. Meanwhile, community-driven creativity flourishes at Kift Ceramics, the openaccess studio led by Annabel Pettigrew. Offering workshops, memberships and courses for all levels, the space embodies a collaborative ethos of exchange, making and learning.
Completing the residency line-up is The Write Place, a sanctuary for writers seeking to escape the distractions of everyday life. The studio offers its members not only physical space but also a community of quiet companionship in which to pursue the solitary craft of writing.
With studios open to visitors throughout the exhibition, Black Swan Arts once again affirms its role as more than a gallery: it is a living, breathing centre for creativity. The 2025 Resident Artists Exhibition is both a celebration of individual practice and a testament to the power of collective artistic energy. blackswanarts.org.uk
