STRENGTHEN . GROW WITH PURE MOVES

Rose Langley
Ithink, in a previous life, I may have been a goldfish - my memory appears to be no more advanced, set, as it seems to be, on repeating certain mistakes ad-infinitum, especially when it comes to one thing in particular: glamping. Over the years we have embarked on many mini breaks, in various non-brick and mortar set-ups, from a geodesic dome in the woods to a yurt in an orchard, a cabin on the edge of Dartmoor and a shepherd’s hut in Exmoor. These little holidays are always booked with great excitement and a touch of naive romance: for a weekend we will live a wonderfully simple life, away from the trappings of modern society. We arrive, as always, with sausages to be cooked on a campfire, wine to be drunk and games to be played. Wellies and waterproofs carefully packed, we are ready for anything. But history, if observed a little more closely, would have told me that we are not, in fact, ready for anything and, for us at least, glamping is always an absolute washout.
Torrential rain is a given. This is of course to be expected in the UK, and we can weather a storm or two, even under canvas. But it is in fact so heavy that we find we can’t really leave the yurt. Trips to the toilet, at the other end of the field we are

in, mean being soaked to the bone. The kids are becoming restless. Meals that were to be cooked on the now sodden fire pit go uneaten and we decide to drive to the nearest town for food. This means driving down the track (it should be illegal to call this a road) which almost ruined our car the first time, with rocks jutting upwards, seemingly designed to scupper our aged banger.
The kids don’t sleep, unfamiliar sounds and hammering wind and rain keeping them, and therefore us, in a state of semi wakefulness all night. In the morning we are all less sparkly than we need to be to get through this. Both kids start to snuffle, they have tandem colds - yippee! A decision is made to leave early. We pack our now entirely wet luggage and poor, neglected sausages, and head, with no small sense of relief, for home.
As I went to sleep in my own bed, I wondered what on earth made me once again book a glamping weekend, and whether I have the ability to stop myself from doing so again. Who knows, but one thing is for sure… ooh hang on, there is a lovely vintage caravan with a fire pit in a secluded field in Cornwall. I wonder if it’s available next May…

Harvest Joy at Vallis Farm
Vallis Farm, 5th October, 10am - 3pm
This autumn, Vallis Farm is celebrating the season with a Harvest Festival that blends tradition, creativity and community spirit. The day will brim with countryside fun, from tug-of-war and welly wanging to a family-friendly scarecrow trail. Head grower Charlie will invite visitors into the market garden to see where their vegetables come from, while children can enjoy forest crafts and animal feeding sessions.
Beyond the fields, the farm’s makers will open their studios, offering workshops and handmade goods alongside stalls of plants, preserves and produce. Storytelling and simple craft activities will keep younger guests engaged, with cork boats setting sail on the natural pool before dusk.
Food is at the heart of the celebration: hearty lamb stew, farm-fresh vegetable soup, thick bread and indulgent tearoom treats. For those seeking calm, the festival also offers a rare chance for non-members to try the new wild swimming pool and sauna. More than just a day out, Vallis Farm’s Harvest Festival is a chance to gather, play and savour the richness of the season together.

This month, the fair returns to its regular home at the Cheese & Grain. Many dealers reserve their finest pieces for the event, making the displays a highlight in themselves.

And with Frome’s renowned independent shops on nearby Catherine Hill, the day promises even more reasons to linger in this picturesque town. The Vintage Bazaar is known not only for its stunning stock but also for its welcoming atmosphere and knowledgeable traders who are always happy to share their expertise. Merlin Theatre, 10th October, 7.30pm
After a hugely enjoyable debut show in the summer, Fearg returns to host another glorious evening of top-quality variety with a fresh and eclectic new line-up. The evening’s headliners are none other than the legends of comedy improv, Instant Wit. Their fast-paced sketches, songs and gags are completely improvised and directed by the audience, making it an addictive, hilarious and always unique experience.
Also taking to the stage is Frome’s own master of musical mischief, Tom Veck. Known for his witty ditties - often inspired by the confessions of strangers - he has earned five-star reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe and performed to a packed house at Frome Festival. Opening the show are the incomparable and indecently entertaining Frukes, bringing their signature ukulele-fuelled fun.

Three great acts. One ticket. Boundless entertainment. Pick & Mix is a joyful, welcoming night of playful nonsense and brilliant performances, all for the price of a takeaway. Audiences are invited to grab a ticket, join the community and share the laughter, whether with a friend, a date, or simply by themselves.

Black Swan Arts
Featuring a group of contemporary artists/ printmakers, including Dr Catherine Cartwright, Maxine Foster, Tallulah Foster, Julie Leach Hilary Paynter, Christopher Pig and Sandra Porter, all reflecting their diverse practices, this exhibition highlights the potential of print.
Inspired by the environment, nature and contemporary technology, each artist responds in their own personal way to the political, identity and climate issues with which we are faced on a daily basis. Uncommon in their concepts, responses and subject matter, they are nevertheless manipulating print as a voice to express different viewpoints.
Figurative or abstract, the artists explore and combine multiple print processes including wood engraving, intaglio, monotype, linocut, etching and screenprint.

Rook Lane, 3rd November, 7.30pm
One of the most distinctive voices in jazz and improvised music today, Laura Jurd’s unique approach to the trumpet is celebrated in the work that she creates. Laura’s love of folk traditions can often be heard in her music, alongside her background in classical composition. The result is a melodic world full of compelling twists and turns, while retaining a grounded sense of familiarity. In the past couple of years, Laura’s love of traditional music has deepened, having played alongside the likes of Irish fiddle player Ultan O’Brien and English accordionist Martin Green (one third of super-group Lau).
This Autumn sees Laura returning to the stage, presenting her astonishing new album ‘Rites and Revelations’, due for release in October. The music

Generous plates, rooted in the season and the place that grows them.
You’ll find wines from independent makers, chosen and poured by The Stores, which carry the food, with bottles to take home if you wish. A cosy evening celebrating ingredients that are picked close by, cooked slowly, shared around a long table with good people.

takes the listener on a journey of ritual and catharsis, propelled by the world-class rhythm section of Ruth Goller, bass, and Corrie Dick, drums, alongside the contemporary folk masters Ultan O’Brien and Martin Green. ‘Jurd seems unconcerned by transient fashions or enrolment in any kind of scene, and pursues a private muse that draws on jazz, folk traditions from Europe and the Middle East… her work is always spiritedly accessible, and often suggests wordless songs.’ – John Fordham, The Guardian.

Pure Moves A Haven of Health & Wellness in the Heart of Frome

Once known as the Golden Knoll, the cluster of Wesleyan buildings perched high at the top of Bath Road in Frome town centre was a prominent gathering place for Victorian residents. These buildings include a former day school and, today, community and learning remain at their heart.
Pure Moves, Frome’s long-standing Pilates and wellness studio, was founded by Liz Chandler in 2007 and has served the town for almost two decades, offering Pilates classes, Qigong, counselling, and holistic therapies.
Pure Moves is tucked away in the very centre of town. As you approach the studios, you are welcomed by blooming gardens in summer and the golden glow of the impressive Grade II listed former school. Inside, the main studio is bright, warm, and uplifting, with no distracting music or fussy décor.
Liz’s original vision for Pure Moves has always been community-focused, and today it is a popular wellbeing hub for Frome residents. With enthusiasm for Pilates growing thanks to increasing recognition from the medical and media world, Pure Moves now offers 50 classes each week—25 Pilates mat sessions and 25 Pilates Reformer classes.
The benefits of Pilates are no secret. It is a complete mind-body exercise method that teaches awareness and control, focused breathing, and postural alignment. Pilates builds core strength, improves flexibility, stability, balance, and stamina through a series of low-impact conditioning and stretching exercises. Pure Moves believes Pilates changes lives, and many of its clients feel the same—an incredible number of them have attended since the studio first opened.
It is a sanctuary from the busy tug and pull of everyday life.
The values of community, kindness, teamwork, and the healing power of movement are shared across staff and teachers.
With over 300 students each week, Pure Moves attracts men and women of all ages and abilities who want to move well and feel good. Mat classes take place in the spacious main studio with its soaring ceiling and beautiful windows, while the adjacent Reformer studio boasts state-of-the-art equipment. Every enrolment begins with a one-toone introduction with a teacher to ensure a solid foundation of understanding. Students commit to half-term blocks of classes, under the ethos that true results come from regular practice. With small class sizes, every student is seen and supported, ensuring movements are performed safely and effectively.
The values of community, kindness, teamwork, and the healing power of movement are shared across staff and teachers. Each client is treated as an individual, with enrolment carefully tailored to match them with the most suitable class. Pure Moves teachers are known for their expertise and experience, with a wealth of knowledge about conditions and injuries. They adapt and create programmes that are accessible for everyone—from elite athletes to those rehabilitating from injury.
Beyond Pilates, Pure Moves hosts Qigong classes and weekend workshops ranging from women’s circles to yoga. Upstairs, two tranquil treatment rooms offer holistic therapies such as massage and counselling.

How to Fall in Love with the Future
A Conversation with Rob Hopkins
Environmental activist and author Rob Hopkins will visit Frome on 23 October, 7–9pm at the Cheese and Grain, for A Conversation with Rob Hopkins, celebrating the launch of his new book How to Fall in Love with the Future: A Time Traveller’s Guide to Changing the World. Known for his inspiring optimism, Rob explores how imagining better futures can help us build them.
“In these times of deep division and despair, it often feels the future will be awful,” says Rob. “Yet cultures can change—rapidly and unexpectedly—for the better.”
Frome Town Council’s Climate Action Lead, Matt Mellen, adds: “We’re delighted to welcome Rob back to share his knowledge and optimism. His book shows how people and movements throughout history have used visions of the future to spark dramatic,

positive change. It asks: what if we all set to work imagining—and creating—a world we loved?”
Author of six books including From What Is to What If, Rob also founded the Transition Movement, supporting communities to move away from fossil fuels and embrace sustainability.
Published by Chelsea Green in September, the new book will be available at the event, which includes a Q&A and signing. Tickets cost £3 via Discover Frome or bit.ly/rob-hopkins-in-frome.
