Fifteen years ago, my now husband and I were in the very early stages of our relationship, and enjoying our first holiday together in the wet and wild mountains of North West Wales. Fast forward to April 2026, and we once again found ourselves in the car, driving across Wales to reach the place of our first holiday together. But this time we were not alone. Two bouncing boys and a puppy, whose energy and size seem to double daily, were squeezed into the back of our modest car for a five-hour journey. So a slightly expanded group number, but still, the mountains, the sea, the wild beauty – it was definitely going to be worth it.
Our cottage overlooked a large and fast-flowing river. We would watch from the slate terrace as lambs, with seemingly zero care for their own safety, scaled the banks to reach some tiny patch of unchewed grass, red kites swooped and cried overhead, and the mist rolled in from the hills. After settling into our surroundings, we decided to head for the coast. The kids went bananas, sliding down sand dunes, and the dog went bananas with old clumps of seaweed. I remembered this little seaside town from all those years ago, but the old Elvis Arcade, the backdrop for a soppy selfie, was no more. We took the kids on the dodgems, and even went against every fibre in my being by letting them loose in the arcade (I am not to be trusted around the 2p machines), so that they could
pour some of our hard-earned cash down the drain. We visited a forest with a long wooden walkway amongst the trees, just above a crystal-clear river. We had a picnic by a waterfall and watched wagtails bob about by the water’s edge. We visited a market and found a stall which sold so many ‘cool things’ that the boys couldn’t believe their eyes. We let them choose one thing each – the big one chose a very old-fashioned watch (analogue – he is an oldfashioned boy, remember), and the small anarchic one chose what we later discovered to be a vintage Jacques Villeneuve baseball cap. Both lads were ecstatic. We played Cluedo most nights, and it led to a failed attempt by me to instil a love of my hero, Poirot, in my eldest son.
Our holiday was what our holidays always are: unglamorous, jolly, basic, wet, adventurous, tedious, glorious and wild. And, as always, a holiday with kids is never really a holiday; you are just parenting somewhere else, often somewhere less adapted to the happiness of kids than your own home. But a holiday, however small and simple, is a privilege. It gives you the joy of anticipation, time away from your life, and lasting memories. But maybe most of all, the thing that makes me most glad of a holiday was something that my son managed to put so perfectly as we neared home, late on a Friday night. “Going on holiday is fun, but my favourite part of the holiday is always coming home.” Me too, kid, me too.
I might be wrong: Paintings for Uncertain Times
Black Swan Arts, Round Tower 2nd–8th May, 10am–4pm
Black Swan resident artist Pete Hempshall presents a new body of work exploring colour, pattern and repetition as a means of reflection and emotional expression. Working with acrylic on natural linen, his paintings begin with intuitive, meditative drawing. Through repetition, he develops a visual language shaped by memory—of colour, shape and rhythm.
Balancing open and closed forms, the works evoke subtle internal states rather than fixed subjects. Described as “democratic paintings”, meaning emerges through the viewer’s perception.
Ultimately, the paintings ask: can shape, colour and pattern hold emotion? Can repetition become a vessel for feeling? The work sits within this
Rewilding in Action: A Tour of Heal Somerset

Learn more about nature-led recovery happening on our doorstep, at Heal Somerset’s rewilding site just a few miles from Frome.
Heal Somerset began its recovery from an ecologically depleted state at the beginning of 2023, and nature is already starting to bounce back. This tour offers a unique opportunity to spend time with Heal’s co-founder and acting CEO, Jan Stannard, who will guide visitors around part of the site along mown paths. Participants will learn about the wider context of rewilding, including why it is needed and the benefits it brings to nature, the climate, and human wellbeing. Jan will explain the rewilding principles that Heal follows and share insights into future plans for the land, including proposed interventions and potential livestock introductions.

FLOC is a peer-led community group facilitated by parents and carers of children with SEND who are further along in their journey and understand the challenges involved. The group welcomes anyone raising a child with additional needs, disability, or sensitivity — at any age or stage, with or without a diagnosis.
The meet-up aims to build a supportive community through shared experiences, where wellbeing, connection, and understanding are prioritised. It encourages open conversation in a space where individuals can feel heard and form meaningful connections. Rather than navigating an unfamiliar path alone, participants are invited to connect and support one another.
Frome International Climate Film Festival 2026

Now in its fifth year, the Frome International Climate Film Festival returns to the Cheese & Grain after receiving over 1,000 entries from around the world.
The event invites the community to connect, share, and be inspired while watching positive films focused on nature, the environment, and action being taken to protect the future.
Attendees can also meet local activists and organisations, including Somerset Wildlife Trust. The programme includes a Climate Circle featuring speakers, an open forum for discussion, contributions from local artists including Peatland Project, live music, and the Climate Awards.

Black Swan Arts Open 2026 is now open for entries
The Open is Black Swan Arts’ flagship exhibition, and submissions are now open to artists and makers working across all disciplines and media.
Founded in 1986, Black Swan Arts has played a central role in Frome’s cultural life for four decades. To mark its 40th anniversary, this year’s Open will be shaped by a carefully chosen panel of guest selectors and judges drawn from across the contemporary arts, all independent of the organisation’s Board and Programming Group. This approach allows for a thoughtful, openminded and rigorous selection process.
Bringing together artists at different stages of their careers from the region and beyond, the 2026 Open aims to be bigger, broader and more ambitious than ever.
Selected works will be exhibited in the Long Gallery at Black Swan Arts from Saturday 8th August to Sunday 27th September 2026, accompanied by an exciting programme of talks and events. May at The Newt is a moment of celebration. The cottage garden is alive with colour, apple blossom gathers in soft drifts across the orchards, and the kitchen gardens hum with new growth.
From 9th to 17th May, this living landscape becomes the setting for The Great Garden Show—a new event exploring the story of gardening in the UK and beyond. Drawing on four years as a partner of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, The Newt now brings that spirit of curiosity and cultivation home to Somerset, inviting visitors to dig deeper into the craft and joy of growing.
The show begins with a celebratory opening weekend, where the gardens set the scene for a relaxed, familyfriendly start.
Flower-crown making, a spring trail and hands-on activities unfold across the estate, with Roman reenactments at Villa Ventorum, alongside garden tours and moments to pause and take it all in. BBQs will be firing up, strawberries and cream freshly served, and picnics enjoyed on the lawn.
As the week unfolds, the focus turns to the deeper story of gardening, bringing together growers, gardeners and leading voices from across the horticultural world. Talks, demonstrations and practical workshops explore everything from soil and propagation to planting and pruning. Whether you’re new to gardening or more experienced, there’s space to learn, share knowledge and see the estate differently.
Alan Titchmarsh, Marian Boswall, Charles Dowding, Tony Kirkham and Matthew Pottage will be fielding queries at a ‘Newt Question Time’ session, with the likes of The Land Gardeners, Andy Jasper, Milli Proust and Michael Marriott leading talks and tours throughout the event.
The final weekend brings a lively close. Saturday takes on a May Day spirit, with maypole dancing, Morris dancers and a Maggie on the Green community craft session, building towards a closing procession.
On Sunday, a BioBlitz invites all ages to join bug counts, butterfly walks and biodiversity recording across the estate.

Josie Mitchell is a Frome-based jeweller specialising in bespoke engagement rings and heirloom remodelling. Earlier this year, after becoming a new mum, Josie closed her small shop on Palmer Street and reshaped her business to focus on what matters most—working closely with clients to create meaningful, personal pieces of jewellery.
Rather than stepping away, she returned to the heart of her craft. “Jewellery has an extraordinary power to mark moments we never want to forget,” she says.
Now working by appointment from her Frome studio, Josie offers a more personal experience. There are no display cases or ready-made designs. Instead, each piece begins with a conversation. She takes time to understand her clients—their relationships, memories and the meaning behind what they want to create. From there, she designs jewellery that reflects their story, whether it’s a bespoke engagement ring or a reimagined family piece.
“This isn’t jewellery that follows trends—it’s jewellery built to last a lifetime, and beyond,” says Josie.
Many clients come to Josie with jewellery they no longer wear, such as inherited rings, broken chains or loose stones. While these items may not suit their current style, they often carry deep sentimental value. Josie transforms these pieces into modern, wearable designs, keeping their history alive while giving them a new purpose.
The result is jewellery that feels both personal and sustainable. Each piece is made by hand in her Frome workshop. Inspired by natural forms, her work features soft textures and organic details. Nothing is mass-produced, and every design is created with care and attention.

A TOWN-WIDE CELEBRATION OF
CONNECTION THIS MAY
This May, something a little special is happening across Frome. Frome Connects is a town-wide, people-powered initiative inviting everyone to explore a simple but powerful idea: that feeling connected—to each other, to places and even to ourselves—is at the heart of a happy, healthy community.
Across the month, residents can expect a mix of uplifting messages, small moments and fun activities popping up around town, all designed to celebrate connection in its many forms. It’s as much about noticing what’s already happening in Frome as it is about trying something new.
Highlights include the Coat of Hopes, a travelling patchwork garment made from stitched panels of people’s hopes and stories, offering a moving symbol of shared experience and collective care. The much-loved Dress Up Fridays also return— an idea born out of lockdown—inviting everyone to wear their finest attire or daftest fancy dress and turn the town into their catwalk each Friday. Expect some standout moments too, including a Kate Bush flashmob, followed by a special bell peal at St John’s Church, where the bells will play Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush—a gloriously unexpected soundtrack echoing across the town. The idea is rooted in a growing recognition that connection plays a vital role in our wellbeing. But here in Frome, the approach is refreshingly down to earth.

Connection isn’t just about socialising. It might be a chat at the bus stop, a walk in nature, a creative moment or simply feeling more at home in your own skin. Frome Connects invites people to find what connection means to them.
The initiative builds on Frome’s strong track record of community-led innovation and is phase two of work spearheaded by Jenny Hartnoll and Dr Helen Kingston in 2013, often called The Frome Model. Jenny now continues this work through We Are Connectors, sharing it nationally and internationally while keeping its roots in Frome. Joining her is Ginny Adams, founder of Mojo Moves, whose joyful, community-focused events have become a familiar part of Frome life.
Together, they’re inviting the town to take part in a shared experiment in connectedness—one small moment at a time. So keep an eye out this May… you might find connection in unexpected places.

Fundraising Events for Frome’s New Skatepark
The Frome Skatepark Project (FSP) is hosting a series of exciting fundraising eventsa to help raise £400,000 for a new skatepark in Mary Baily Playing Field, set to open in 2027. The project is supported by the Rotary Club of Frome and Frome Town Council, and they’re kicking things off with a Skate Jam event on 9th May, featuring a special guest: Isaac Jose, the European Champion at the 2025 European Scootering Championships in Tjelta, Norway.
The Skate Jam is set to be a fun-filled day for the whole family, with competitions, music, and plenty of opportunities to showcase your skating and scooting skills. The event runs from midday, with participants competing for prizes in various categories. It’s open to all ages and abilities, whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out. If you’re new to skating, don’t worry! Local instructor Dave Lea will be offering skating lessons as part of the event. Attendees can book 30-minute lessons for £6 in the morning: 10am and 10.30am for children aged 6-11, and 11am and 11.30am for 12-16 year-olds. All proceeds from these classes go directly to the skatepark project.
In addition to the Skate Jam, Dave Lea will be leading the first in a series of free lessons for girls at the skatepark on 7th May from 4.15pm to 5.15pm. This first session is for ages 11 to 16, and future lessons will cater to other age groups and underrepresented skaters. These lessons are part of FSP’s mission to make the skatepark and skateboarding more accessible for everyone.
FSP isn’t stopping with just the Skate Jam. On 7th June, they’ll be at the Frome Independent market, with plans for live music events and a deck auction later in 2026. Another highlight of their fundraising campaign is a screening of the documentary Woolf Women: Now or Never at the Merlin Theatre on 18th June at 7pm. This film follows five young female downhill skaters on an epic road trip across Europe, finishing at the Sumela Monastery in Turkey. After the screening, there will be a Q&A with the filmmakers. Tickets cost £7 plus a booking fee and can be purchased via the Merlin Theatre website.
