Ican pinpoint the moment that I started to notice the existence of the natural world. A er a childhood spent in the sticks, I moved to Bristol and, instead of immersing myself in nature, I became a devotee of urban living. About ten years in to my city life, on my way to work, I noticed a small peachy coloured flower, sticking over a garden wall on an especially dreary February day. I looked out for it the next day, pleased with its obvious disregard for the grey cloak of winter. On the third day, I took a photo of it with my very grainy phone camera and later identified it as a Japanese quince. They come in an array of rich, deep hues and appear both luxurious and ostentatious, blooming as they do at the dullest time of year. I started to observe them, along with other flowers, buds and blossoms, popping up in the front gardens of those Bristol streets. It was as if a crack had appeared in my city-dweller’s vision, and nature was pushing its way back in to my consciousness. I was more aware of the changing of the seasons, the wildlife that inhabited my small garden, and, eventually, the world that lay beyond the city limits.

They come in an array of rich, deep hues and appear both luxurious and ostentatious, blooming as they do at the dullest time of year.

I started to explore the river walks which lead out of Bristol. I got a dog to accompany me, and together we would sit and watch kingfishers whizzing busily up and down the banks, while people tramped about behind us, none the wiser. On my train journeys I would gaze out of the window, catching sight of heron, deer, birds of prey and, on one occasion, an o er. I would wonder why noone else was looking - didn’t they know? Would they care if they did? I cared, enough to leave Bristol and head to the fat, rolling hills of Somerset, an action that I can trace back to that one Japanese quince, a change in the course of my life for which I will always be grateful.

Noticing the everyday nature around us with new eyes can be a deeply grounding experience, pu ing us in touch with the seasons, reminding us that we are part of nature and not separate from it - a thought I find thoroughly heartening. For me, it is the secret to a simple happiness. So as we sit, with one foot in Winter and the other in Spring, look for those small signs that change is coming: the flowers, buds and blossoms, the returning birds and the returning light. And maybe, a perfectly peachy Japanese quince.

Frome’s Missing Links Fundraising Ceilidh

Rook Lane, 22nd March, 7pm

Just two miles outside Frome town centre lies the start of the Colliers Way, a family-friendly, traffic-free path to Radstock, enjoyed by many walkers, runners, riders and cyclists. For a long time, plans have been in place to continue this route alongside the existing railway line, onto the riverside footpath and into Frome.

Frome’s Missing Links is a local community group campaigning to get this multi-user path completed and to create new links between Frome and the surrounding villages. Each year a fundraising ceilidh is held - a hugely popular event, helping the work of Frome’s Missing Links to continue. This year, Trowbridge-based folk ensemble Spill the Whiskey will be providing the music for what promises to be another brilliant night.

JAMES WEST DESIGN

Concert for Palestine: Eddie Martin and Friends

Cheese & Grain Café Bar, 20th March, 6.30pm

Award-winning Blues, Americana and Jazz musicians will play together this March in solidarity with the humanitarian plight of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. In what is becoming more a minifestival than a concert, Eddie Martin has brought together sax and piano luminaries Iain Ballamy and John Law, and lap-steel virtuoso Holly Carter, plus rising star singer-songwriters Zena and Sophie Rose. A er their own solo spots, each musician will guest with Eddie’s acoustic, band and big band repertoire. “Many of the songs have been re-wri en as moraleraising collective shout-outs, for the human plight of Palestinians to be recognised,” Eddie explained.

“In so many ways, Palestinians are being deprived of life from a 75-year occupation. It is not just the horrendous toll of death and injury from the war in Gaza in which children and women predominate. It’s also the tiny inhumane details of an apartheid oppression that for decades has destroyed homes, forced eviction and controlled every aspect of Palestinian life while denying political rights and recognition of statehood. Lots of us feel we want to help. Musicians as a group have really warmed to this concert as something we can do.”

Forgotten

ChurchesExhibition

Silk Mill, 21st - 23rd March, 10am - 4pm

The exhibition celebrates the launch of “Forgo en Churches: Exploring England’s Hidden Treasures” by Frome-based author Luke Sherlock (instagram - @englilshpilgrim). The book will be published on 27th March by Frances Lincoln, and has been beautifully illustrated throughout by Ioana Pioaru. As well as writing, Luke owns Sherlock and Pages, a specialist bookshop on Catherine Hill dedicated to works of landscape, nature, history and heritage, and he will be hosting a pop-up bookshop and print store at the Silk Mill throughout the exhibition.

The concert aims to raise humanitarian and campaigning funds for Palestine. Half of the funds will go to support work with the Arts Centre ALROWWAD, in the West Bank, which gives wartorn youth a safe space, voice and hope for the future. Later this year Frome will also be hosting a cultural exchange with Palestinian young people from this centre. And half of the funds will go toward the campaigning work of the Palestinian Solidarity Group.

Tickets cost £12 + booking fee in advance or £15 on the door, and can be purchased from the Cheese & Grain 01373 455420 www.cheeseandgrain.com

Festival

Returns For Its third Year

Now in its third year, Photo|Frome brings a huge selection of carefully curated photography to the town and, through exhibitions, talks and workshops, plans to explore this year’s theme, InEquality. Through photography from internationally acclaimed, national and regional artists, this year’s photography festival is the most ambitious yet with thirteen exhibitions, multiple awards and a pop-up portrait photo studio (Faces of Frome in partnership with Frome Independent market).

Rook Lane Chapel, the festival’s central venue, features Joss Barra ’s photography taken whilst working on set with acclaimed director Ken Loach alongside documentary photographers independently working on similar issues as the

films. there are major themes drawn from Loach’s films: colonialism and resistance, living conditions and the human spirt, refugees and the welfare state. The “constructed reality” film stills aim to start a conversation with photographers who have covered the same themes in their own way. This includes documentary photography by Susan Meiselas, Nick Hedges, Tish Murtha, Jim Brogden and Roland Ramanan, conceptual work by Paul Seawright and interpretive work by Fast Forward: Women in Photography curated by Anna Fox

Further exhibitions take different approaches to the theme. This includes Joanne Coates whose work explores rurality, hidden histories, and income-based inequalities, Valentina Sinis’ ‘Were Afghan Women to Unveil their Tales’, Sujata Setia’s

is an independent festival dedicated to showcasing and celebrating all levels of photographic endeavour from local, national and international photographers.

‘A Thousand Cuts’, Sarah Palmer’s ‘Wish You Were Here’, Evgeniya Strygina’s ‘Home from Home’ and Tim Smith’s ‘In The World But Not Of It’. Students from Falmouth University, Boomsatsuma, Bristol and Frome College will also be exhibiting, as will the local Frome Wessex Photographic community.

This year’s festival builds on 2023’s successful second edition, which featured 170+ photographers, enjoyed over 13,000 visitors, broke venue records, and welcomed a endees from across the UK. The organisers are commi ed to using Photo|Frome as a platform to explore important issues from a diverse set of viewpoints, with this year’s theme of ‘InEquality’ being particularly timely.

Photo|Frome is an independent festival dedicated to showcasing and celebrating all levels of photographic endeavour. The festival runs from 5 April to 27 April. The festival aims to put photography on the map in Frome and the Southwest of the UK – and, eventually, put Frome firmly on the international photo circuit.

Photo|Frome’s Institutional Partner is Arts Council England, using public funding by the National Lo ery. Their Official Sponsor is MPB, the largest global platform to buy, sell and trade used photo and video gear.

The joy of Frome Town Band

Frome Town Band is one of our town’s secret treasures. It’s been around for years (more than a hundred in fact!), and you’ll fi nd them at all the usual events where you’d expect to see a brass band: at Christmas, playing carols as the lights go on, in the park in the summer on the bandstand entertaining the dog walkers and the picnickers, and at Remembrance Day. Always there, and part of what goes on in Frome, year a er year.

The band doesn’t stand still though. For many years the band’s professional musical director has been going into our fi rst schools with a collection of instruments, and lending them to children so that they can get hands-on experience of these incredible brass instruments. It’s a free opportunity as the band believes that making music shouldn’t just be for those lucky enough to afford music lessons.

People of all ages can join the band, and become part of a small group, learning to read music and play a brass instrument with the help of the professional musical director. It costs peanuts (£9 a month) and you can borrow the instrument for free, as part of your band membership.

And now, hoping to grow some more, the band is opening up one of its regular Wednesday rehearsals to all comers, but experienced (and returning) players are especially welcome. If you are an E flat cornet, a 3 rd cornet, or a bass player, the red carpet will roll out for you! Open Rehearsal night is on Wednesday March 5th, from 7.00pm at Frome College, and everyone is welcome to a end.

RADIO DUSTHOLE

On Air with Julian House

Radio Dusthole is a monthly radio show on Frome FM which is hosted by Mendip based Julian House Service Manager James Ball, and features both staff and service users. The show is a feel-good hour filled with good tunes, lively conversation, and fascinating stories from voices that are so o en ignored. The name ‘Radio Dusthole’ refers to Julian House’s single supported housing unit in Shepton Mallet, which is in a renovated pub called ‘The Dusthole’. This service is funded by Mendip Council and aims to enable residents to develop sufficient independent living skills to move on to more permanent accommodation within 6 to 12 months.

“I used to work at an activities centre for adults with disabilities in New Zealand, and they hosted a weekly

show on Wellington Access Radio, which was always a highlight for me. Hosting the show really empowered the people I supported, and was something they could show off to their friends and family. I basically nicked the idea and brought it to the Mendips!” James told us. “Our clients love music and have good banter, so it seemed like a no-brainer. I contacted Frome FM, who loved the idea. I went in for a day of training and it’s been a staple of our activities since. I love seeing the response from the clients.

They just loved hearing their voices coming out of the radio. They don’t shy away from pu ing themselves outside of their comfort zone, and building their self esteem is such a massive part of their journey with us.”
