I’m not sure if I am allowed to mention this publicly, but… my son is part of a Secret Spy Club. Formed as an alternative to the usual lunchtime football drama, SSC has a select few members and as-yet undefined goals, other than to be secretive and sneaky. Oh, and to have membership cards. We catch up on the SSC activities at bedtime and, though there has as yet been little to no actual action, or useful information gathered, the potential is there. My son’s newfound role as a primary school spook has prompted a memory from my own childhood, which I happily recounted to him. That of the Colerne Ninja (named after the village we lived in).
My son’s newfound role as a primary school spook has prompted a memory from my own childhood, which I happily recounted to my son.
Just over the graveyard which belonged to the chapel that stood between our houses lived our dear friend Paul. Our lives were intertwined as children, and he and my brother spent many a day, both dressed as Spiderman, legging it about our garden and firing imaginary webs over imaginary foes. But as Paul grew up, he left behind the blue and red Spidey pyjamas and replaced them with an outfit of head-to-toe black, balaclava included. For he was now the Colerne Ninja.

His self-appointed role was that of village sneak, using the dark of night to run unseen along walls, through people’s gardens, and around the grounds of the village manor house. He would sometimes take a precious item — jewellery of his mother’s, his dad’s wallet, a passport, or a family photograph — and hide it, maybe up a tree or behind a stone in someone’s garden, just to give himself the task of having to retrieve it the next night. When we asked about his nighttime pursuits, he would only give us scraps of information — it was understood that his work was clandestine, even to us. As you can imagine, we thought he was very cool.
Being an adult is funny. Seeing our children follow some form of our own childhood pursuits and create their own stories to pass on when they grow up. Our dear friend Paul died in his early thirties, but his legend lives on. He is always a child in my mind, the age my eldest is now, unimaginably cool and daring. I hope he knows that the legacy of the Colerne Ninja has become a story that has inspired the next generation of sneaky kids. Now, where is my wallet…

Summer 2026 sees Miracle Theatre bring their magical twist and love of laughter to the classic story of Peer Gynt. Young Peer is a lazy dreamer who misinterprets Shakespeare’s advice, “To thine own self be true”, to mean “Look after number one”! He chases after riches and pleasure, living a life of moral failure and endless excuses. Surely, he will come to no good? Loosely based on Ibsen’s epic comedy, this famous morality tale is perfect material for Miracle Theatre’s highly visual style – physical, funny, surreal, and deeply human – a journey through the dream-like world of Norse

The relationship between soil and gut health is a fascinating area of study, and evidence shows that time spent outside has a hugely positive impact on our insides. From forest bathing to making ferments, each bridge we build between the natural world and ourselves is a step further towards creating healthy habits which are good for both mind and body.
Join Alex from Somerset Kimchi and Kraut and Tamsin, Head of Land and Learning at Vallis Farm, on this one-day workshop to learn about how healthy soils work, the impact of gardening on both physical and mental health, and how you can make simple changes for big benefits. Expect a gentle walk through the forest garden and local woodland to see what plants can be foraged and grown to improve your gut biome. You’ll be getting your hands in the soil and learning how there are direct links between our interactions with the earth, our food, and our happiness.
You will then enjoy a healthy and delicious lunch together before learning how to make ferments, both for yourself and your garden. And what better way to finish the day than with a bit of cold-water swimming in the natural pool?

Swing from Paris are an all-string jazz quartet of violin, guitars, and double bass, inspired by the music of the 1930s, ’40s, and ’50s: from the cafés and cabarets of Montmartre to Artie Shaw, Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli, and the master of tango, Astor Piazzolla.
Known for their tight ensemble sound and virtuosic performances, the group brings a distinctive Parisian flair to vintage jazz and stylish swing. They have performed at major UK and European festivals, including the renowned Django Reinhardt Festival at Samois-sur-Seine, and have appeared on BBC TV and radio, as well as at the French Embassy at Kensington Palace.

Every member, whether they are professional artists or someone in the foothills of artistic exploration, is invited to participate in their regular exhibitions. Corsley Manor, 25th July, 4pm
Every summer, the Elizabethan Evening presents much-loved outdoor theatre in the village of Corsley to support local charities. This summer, theatregoers are invited to enjoy The Three Musketeers, performed by outdoor theatre specialists Illyria. Set in 17th-century France, it is a whirlwind of excitement, broad comedy, and ingenious storytelling. Romance. Intrigue. Betrayal. Revenge. Dumas’s classic has the lot! The production is staged in the gardens of the historic Manor Farm, a truly special setting for this popular annual occasion. Now in its third decade, the event attracts up to 500 visitors and, to date, has raised almost £90,000. This year’s performance supports Frome College Young Carers and the Youth Adventure Trust. The Frome Book Fair returns and, after last year’s success, the 2026 fair will feature around thirty stalls offering rare, collectable, and second-hand books, maps, manuscripts, and ephemera, with something to suit everyone. This fair offers a wonderful opportunity for book lovers, young and old, to enjoy a day out, find a treasure or two, and talk to like-minded people.

As part of this year’s Frome Festival events, Your Move is the latest new comedy drama from Fromebased creatives Really Truly Theatre, and carries their usual stamp of humour, pathos, and intrigue.
Four very different women decide to buy a house together in Your Move, but one of them is keeping something from the other three – a problem that could bring the walls crashing down around them. “I like to write about issues in society that affect everyone, while shining a spotlight on how they are experienced from a woman’s perspective. But the comedy element always creeps in, because it wouldn’t be realistic if we weren’t falling about laughing at some point,” explains director Polly Lamb.
The female-led theatre company formed in 2020 during the Covid lockdown period, leading to their opening production Lockdown Blues, written and directed by Polly Lamb. They have been producing plays for festivals in Bath and Frome ever since, addressing contemporary social issues head-on. Tickets for Your Move can be purchased via the festival box office. Details are in the Frome Festival programme.

In a hidden corner of Frome, you might just come across something a little unexpected. Rooted in community, shaped by nature, and alive with human connection, Wildcat Community Sauna offers a living, breathing social space to those locals looking to boost their wellbeing, both physically and socially.
Wildcat’s story begins long before the first sauna was fired up. Founder Shaun, with support from his partner Ellen, brings a deep history of communityled projects, grounded in creativity, sustainability, and care. The sauna was built, and originally based, in their rewilded clay quarry on the edge of town, home to Super Roots Outdoor Kids, run by Ellen –an initiative focused on opening up children and young people’s access to more inclusive, wild forest school and adventure play. Witham Friary itself carries a story: local lore speaks of a black wildcat roaming the area, so the children christened it “Wildcat Quarry”. When a sauna project began to take shape, the name felt inevitable.
Wildcat’s goal was to fulfil a need for space, place, and people, creating somewhere for people to step out of the noise, reconnect with something ancient and shared, and feel part of something without needing to perform. A place to pause, reset, and
return to, where you begin to recognise familiar faces and can arrive exactly as you are. Over time, this routine becomes second nature, and part of the rhythm of your week.
Crucially, Wildcat puts community over commodity. Structured as a social enterprise, it is driven by principles rather than profit, aligned with the vision of organisations such as Social Enterprise UK, which champion business as a force for a fairer, more equal society. There are no shareholders demanding polish or exclusivity. Instead, there is a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere where connections form naturally. People arrive carrying stress, tension, or isolation, and often leave feeling lighter and more grounded.
The ritual itself is simple and elemental: heat, water, rest, repeat.
Wildcat is deliberately not about perfection or image. It resists the idea that wellness must be expensive, remote, or rarefied. While many saunas position themselves as rural retreats – quiet, removed, and idyllic – Wildcat is something else entirely: a wild, elemental space embedded in everyday urban life.
Within the space, guests move between saunas at different temperatures, cold plunge baths, outdoor showers, and the ever-popular bucket shower.

Tucked away in the courtyard behind At The Station in Frome, Wildcat feels like a secret oasis. Just a stone’s throw from the train station and the town’s cultural buzz, it is filled with plants, steam, and warmth. Within the space, guests move between two saunas at different temperatures, cold plunge baths, an outdoor rain shower, and the ever-popular bucket shower. Sessions are available as drop-ins or through regular packages, making it accessible whether you come once or weave it into the fabric of your week.
Inclusivity is central to Wildcat’s mission. Through its Community Kitty and participation in the Mendip Social Prescribing Directory, Wildcat offers subsidised and free sessions to people on low incomes. Positioned so that anyone can walk, cycle, take a bus, or train to visit the sauna, the aim is to reduce barriers – social, financial, physical – and create an environment that supports physical, mental, and social wellbeing. Profits are reinvested to support local partnerships, creative collaborations, and environmental initiatives, from recycled materials to plant-based cleaning products and biodiversity planting.
At its core, Wildcat is a space that aims to adapt, listen to and grow with its community. It has hosted solstice and equinox saunas, full-moon
rituals, creative workshops, and fundraisers. One year into its journey, Wildcat is already evolving, with plans to expand sustainably so it can host more events, support more people, and deepen its roots in the town it calls home.

You’ll now find Bramble & Wild tucked inside Black Swan Arts. After moving their HQ to Ilminster last year to be closer to their flower farm and home, the team quickly realised that Frome still felt like part of who they are. So, they’re back.
This is less a traditional flower shop, more creative florist studio: seasonal flowers, fresh bunches, beautiful plants, and the same wild, gardeninspired style Bramble & Wild is known for—now in a smaller, more intimate space.
Kirsty will be in the studio Wednesday to Friday, with weekend flowers looked after by another familiar Frome face. Expect regular fresh deliveries, Britishgrown blooms from their own flower farm, plenty of

grab-and-go bunches, and made-to-order bouquets. If customers have a specific colour palette or floral vision in mind, pre-ordering is recommended. The new space is cosy, and the best stems tend to go quickly.
Whether it’s flowers for the kitchen table, a lastminute gift, or a relaxed browse, Bramble & Wild is delighted to be welcoming people back. Smaller space, same Bramble & Wild magic.

UNFILTERED FROME is a new art and wine fair coming to Frome this July, bringing contemporary artists and lowintervention winemakers together in one shared space at Silk Mill. The event was founded by three people whose backgrounds naturally overlap across art, wine, and events. The idea began with the founder of Saddle Goose, Adam, who originally trained as a fine artist and later worked in art direction. A long-standing interest in how place, material, and culture shape creativity led from art into winemaking, where the same ideas apply. After making wine around the world, Saddle Goose was founded in 2020 to focus on boundary-pushing, low-intervention wines made from English grapes. That journey brought the winery to Frome, with a working winery opening in 2024 and a cellar door in 2025.
Kate, co-founder and partner, brings a strong focus on making the arts more open and accessible. Her experience spans major cultural organisations including the Design Museum, RIBA, Bow Arts Trust, and the Barbican Centre. Her background helped shape UNFILTERED FROME as an inclusive, welcoming event where people can engage directly with artists and makers.
UNFILTERED FROME brings together over 20 low-intervention wine producers and more than 15 contemporary artists from across the UK.
The final piece came through Michelle, founder of Tribe Somerset, who has built a reputation for creating open, energetic, and genuinely inclusive creative events. When all three connected at a Tribe Somerset event at Silk Mill, it quickly became clear that they shared the same values. With the right people, the right venue, and the right town, the idea for UNFILTERED FROME took shape.

UNFILTERED FROME brings together over 20 low-intervention wine producers and more than 15 contemporary artists from across the UK. Visitors can meet the makers, enjoy wine tastings, explore exhibitions, take part in workshops, watch live drawing, and enjoy local food, DJs, and alternative drinks including beer, cider, and kombucha.
The fair takes place on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th July at Silk Mill. Sessions run Saturday 12:00–16:00 and 17:00–21:00, and Sunday 12:00–17:00. Early bird tickets are £15, rising to £18, and include entry, tastings, an UNFILTERED tote bag, a keep glass, and five sip tokens.
UNFILTERED FROME is a relaxed, accessible event built around creativity, conversation, and community—bringing art and wine together without barriers.

Mid-week stays in the shepherd’s huts at Vallis Farm offer a gentle escape from the pace of everyday life. Set within the Market Garden, the huts are completely off-grid, giving guests the chance to slow down, switch off, and settle into the natural rhythms of the farm. Without emails, notifications, or screens, days unfold simply— waking to birdsong, spending time outdoors, and enjoying evenings by the fire pit beneath starry skies.
The two hand-built huts provide cosy, restful accommodation, each with a comfortable double bed and views across the garden. Guests wake with the light, watch chickens roam the veg beds, and ease into mornings at a calmer pace. With

no electricity or running water, the experience encourages a refreshing return to basics: cooking over the fire, wandering the farm, and resting deeply at night.
Shared facilities include a Field Kitchen with running water, a gas hob and kettle, a compost loo, and a gas-powered shower. One hut, The Woodsman, also features a wood-fired hot tub available for an additional fee.
Guests can enjoy the wild swimming pond, enquire about sauna access, and check the events calendar for workshops or seasonal gatherings during their stay.
