Ithink we are letting the neighbourhood down. What started as a conveniently timed No Mow May has now, in mid June (as I write), shown us up for what we truly are: chaotic, busy, and owners of the least effective strimmer available to humankind. Oh, and utterly uninspired by any requirement to “keep up with the Joneses”.
Whilst those who stroll past our front garden may wonder if the owners of this property passed away a few months ago due to its overgrown grass and untrimmed willow tree, they have yet to see the back garden, which would deepen their concerns yet further. Our long, sloping garden is split into three levels. At the very top of the garden, beyond our fence, is woodland. Then our top tier is what I like to generously call ‘the field’, with waist-height grass and a few plum trees. The middle section is shaded by two large, twiggy trees which probably need cutting back, and then the bottom part is filled with peppermint and rosemary, both of which have been left to their own devices for far too long.

The thing is, my garden used to be immaculate. In our previous home, and previous one-child-only
life, I pottered about the garden, grew veg, tended to the cottage-garden flowers and cultivated the most extraordinary lavender bush you’ve ever seen (if you’d have seen it!). Pots filled with tumbling tomatoes and herbs surrounded a neatly maintained patio where my son and I would sit and play. I always thought that one day, when I had more than two seconds to myself again, I would have a neat and pretty garden once more. But No Mow May, though we rather let it run away with us, has left us with what I now think of as an almost perfect garden. It is filled with wildlife, from lizards to hedgehogs, slow worms to shrews. And it is green, so gloriously lush and green. Verdant, that is the word. Fat and verdant, with patches of deep shade, and the sound of leaves rustling in the breeze, which can become so loud that it drowns out the sounds of the many birds who dart about the trees and bushes. In the extraordinary heat of May, I was so glad to be in our overgrown green haven, and to share it with the wildlife who needed its shelter too. It’s a reminder that, though we head out to the fields to see the wonder and beauty of nature, we can create a space for it right outside our own back door.

Vallis Farm Summer Fete

The annual Summer Fete at Vallis Farm is a relaxed and joyful celebration of community, creativity, and seasonal food. Set in the countryside near Frome, the event offers a full day of activities for all ages and is an ideal way to enjoy a classic British summer on the farm.
A special highlight is the wild swimming pool and sauna, open to non-members for a limited time. These sessions run from 10am–2pm, with a small number of spaces available each hour for those aged 16 and over. Across the farm, families can enjoy lawn games, face painting, storytelling, and plenty of space to explore. Visitors are also invited into the open studios to meet the makers based at Vallis Farm, see their work, and join informal popup workshops. Local stalls will be selling handmade goods, plants, and other farm-grown treats.

The Haydn Jeugd Strijk Orkest is one of the leading youth string orchestras in the Netherlands. A vibrant platform for young musical excellence, the ensemble brings together talented string players, many of whom study at leading European conservatoires. Enjoy a rich programme of string music including works by Purcell, Elgar, Mendelssohn, and Vaughan Williams.
Food plays a central role in the day, with a BBQ serving burgers and sausages made with locally sourced meat from Meadowsweet Farming and September House. Homemade cakes, hot drinks, elderflower cordial, ice cream from Brickell’s Ice Cream, and a well-stocked bar will also be available. Tickets are limited, so booking in advance is recommended. Frome Children’s Festival
A joyful day for all the family
On Sunday 19th July, local child and family support charity Purple Elephant will stage its much-loved celebration of childhood, the Frome Children’s Festival. Welcoming families from across the town and surrounding villages, the festivities begin at 10am and focus on taking part together. “We want to make it easy to celebrate childhood,” says Purple Elephant Family Support Manager Sue Willis. “There’s no selling onsite apart from food and drink, so parents aren’t under ‘pester power’. Families can bring picnics or visit Fair Frome’s pay-what-youcan wrap stall—the most important thing is simply being there and having fun.”
Around 3,000 people are expected to enjoy more than 30 activities. Highlights include den-building, bushcraft and nature play in Welshmill Woods; adventure play, face painting, biscuit decorating and Jellyfish Theatre’s The Dragon Wagon in the park; and BMX workshops on the pump track. Market Yard hosts inclusive sports, archery and circus skills, while calmer spaces include a sensory room, reading tent, yoga, baby area and Twinnies Petting Farm. Inside the Cheese and Grain, children can enjoy crafts, science workshops, glitter tattoos and music recording sessions. New for this year, the Wiltshire Outdoor Learning Team will bring a fully accessible climbing wall.
Thanks to the support of Cheese and Grain, entry to the festival remains free for this, its twelfth year, with a give-what-you-can donation available at booking and on the day to help ensure the event continues. Frome’s favourite free event returns to Market Yard with another celebration of amazing street food, music, and entertainment. Sample delicious offerings from around the world and dance to a sensational collection of acts.
Rubix Groove perform 80s classics that everyone can sing along to. Fresh from their headline slot at Bath’s Party in the City, expect wigs, bandanas, clashing patterns, and the ultimate party atmosphere — get into the groove and dance the night away.
The Juice are a collective of soul/funk musicians featuring Joe James’s powerful vocals, performing original music alongside danceable covers. The band is made up of members of The Enrichments, Mighty One, Samuel Jack, Twin Falls, and Littlemen. Supernormal also play funk and groove originals, a fresh new outfit with Danielle Sharp on vocals.
The event will start with Frome Street Bandits leading a procession from St John’s Church at 5pm. For children, you’ll find a Sass stilt walker and a circus skills area. SATCO return with a ballet, and you might come across some shanty-singing fishermen, Captain Crusty & the Pickled Herrings. Frome’s Town Crier will also deliver a cry for Frome Festival’s 25th anniversary.

Created by leading makers and presented by Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, the touring exhibition brings together 25 witty and inventive mechanical sculptures. Inspired by the spectacle of the circus, each artwork springs to life at the push of a button or the turn of a handle, revealing stories filled with humour, surprise and charm.
The exhibition features animated models, toys and whimsical characters by some of today’s finest automata artists, including pieces such as Lion Tamer by Ron Fuller and Ensemble Workshop by Stephen Guy. Every creation showcases a unique blend of craftsmanship, engineering and storytelling.

Drawing Weekender at Hauser & Wirth Somerset
The Royal Drawing School presents Drawing Weekender, a two-day celebration of drawing, experimentation and creative exchange taking place across the buildings, gardens and surrounding landscape of Hauser & Wirth Somerset on 18th–19th July.
Open to all ages and levels of experience, Drawing Weekender invites visitors to explore drawing through artist-led workshops, talks, collaborative activities and free drop-in sessions led by artists and tutors from the Royal Drawing School. Across the weekend, participants can draw outdoors in Piet Oudolf’s celebrated gardens and the rolling Somerset landscape, take part in immersive life drawing workshops inside the historic Durslade Farmhouse, or gather in the Radić Pavilion for talks and participatory demonstrations.
All materials are provided, and the programme welcomes artists, creatives and complete beginners alike.
Designed as an open and exploratory experience, the programme encourages visitors to move freely between structured sessions and spontaneous moments of creativity. Alongside ticketed workshops, free activities and self-guided drawing prompts run throughout the site, including specially designed sessions for children aged 7+ and a Family Drawing Studio offering hands-on activities for families.
Highlights include dynamic interior life drawing, outdoor landscape drawing, artist encounters and talks, a panel discussion exploring the role of drawing in the digital age, and ongoing collaborative activities led by artist Lilith Piper. All materials are provided, and the programme welcomes artists, creatives and complete beginners alike.

FRENCH FANCIES TO TAKE AWAY
On the bustling thoroughfare of Badcox in Frome, nestled between Bistro Lotte and Bar Lotte, sits the newest venture from this ever-popular food family: Le Picnic.
Small but exquisitely formed, Le Picnic is a pop-in built around its mouth-watering rotisserie chicken, already a huge hit with locals since opening in late May.
The menu is designed for flexibility, from quick takeaway lunches — think warm chicken rolls, generously sized Scotch eggs and delicate tarts cooked next door at the bistro—to whole rotisserie chickens or complete roasts with potatoes, sauce and salad.
The deli counter champions quality local produce, selling cheeses including Whitelake Farm goat’s cheese and Cheddar from Cheddar Gorge Cheese Co, alongside cured meats from Somerset Charcuterie, cakes made in-house and hearty, fresh salads. “The whole idea behind Le Picnic was that you could pop in to collect something tasty to eat in the park, or at home,” says Lotte. “If you’re popping next door to Bar Lotte for a drink, you can order something to take with you—we want to offer flexibility as well as quality.”
With the kitchen at Bistro Lotte close at hand, Le Picnic can also take special requests. “We recently made the most beautiful, huge strawberry tart!” says owner Lotte. The business is equally set up for event catering, supplying French-inspired food for everything from intimate dinners to large parties. “We want to provide food that makes people feel happy,” adds Sarah, who you’ll find serving behind the counter.

Mayday Saxonvale Community Share Offer opens
Hundreds of people have invested more than £250,000 as the Mayday Saxonvale Community Share Offer launched on 8th June, marking a strong early show of support for plans to bring Saxonvale into community ownership. The campaign gives people the opportunity to buy community shares in Mayday Saxonvale Community Benefit Societyand help fund a competitive bid to buy and regenerate the 12-acre town centre site. If successful, Saxonvale would become the UK’s largest and most ambitious community-led regeneration project.
The campaign aims to raise a minimum of £1.5 million from the community, alongside £1.2 million of secured social impact lending from Resonance, creating a £2.7 million funding package. Proposals include around 263 homes, more than 10,000 sqm of commercial and community space, workspace for local businesses, public and riverside areas, and long-term community ownership of key assets. Unlike conventional development models, long-term value would be retained locally and reinvested back into the town.

There will be a wide range of gardens open, including several new additions and recent makeovers. Please be aware that some gardens are only open on one or two days across the weekend, as gardeners also love to get out and see other gardens. This year, you can enjoy exploring some gardens on the evening of Friday 10th, discovering beautiful spaces when the air is cooler before Frome Festival’s evening events.
