Photos of my childhood are extremely precious to me, as there are very few to be found. When we moved from my childhood home in my late teens my parents mislaid the large box of photos that my brother and I used to spend hours poring through, and thus a huge swathe of childhood memories were lost. We sometimes wonder if they are still in the corner of the attic of our old house, blending into the many boxes that the current owner has surely stowed up there. Who knows, but what it means is that, the few photos of my brother and me in our younger years are precious, and I know every inch of the detail, from what we were wearing to the awful haircuts, how the garden looked or the smell of the sofa we were sitting on. Sometimes, when I look through these precious images I am struck by how often we are unaware of the camera. We aren’t posing or forcing smiles. Usually we are laughing, being silly and in the moment.
A few months ago I decided to finally come off all personal social media. For me, it’s not a positive place and offered very little to benefit my daily life. And now that I no longer have somewhere to post the photographs I take, I am noticing a change in the contents of the camera roll on my phone. Previously, the images I took of my kids could often be organised, recreations of a moment just past, a ‘smile at the camera’ order undertaken, an angle used to hide mess or clutter. Photos of myself needed to be ‘nice’ and
I’d feel disgruntled if they weren’t. Now when I take a photo, I am capturing that exact moment, real life, with no perfection: the kids playing with dinosaurs under the heaving washing line, watching a film all snuggled up in a very messy sitting room, me or my husband looking exhausted or grumpy. The weight of perfectionism is not a burden I carry, nor is the desire to greatly impress others. But when we take images to share online, we automatically consider how they will be received, and that affects the photos we take and the ones we choose to share, and in turn this edits the memories we, and our children, have.
When I think of the few photos I have from my childhood, the one that comes to my mind most often is of me and my brother, with whom I have always had a close relationship. We are sitting in a hammock, sharing a private joke and lost in the joyous freedom of youth. When I look at it I remember the feeling of the grass beneath the hammock and of how my brother’s voice sounded when he was eight. Recently I took a similar photo of my boys. They were covered in ice cream and grass cuttings, sitting amongst the Tupperware they had been using to catch lady babies (the smallest’s name for ladybirds). It wasn’t pretty, with our bin in the background and a pile of laundry yet to be hung out in the frame. But it is our real, unedited life, and it’s this one that I want me and my kids to remember.

Jane Sheppard describes her large ceramics as 3D drawings that harness areas of space. Her work takes inspiration from the neolithic landscape and prehistoric artefacts, patterns and symbols from across the globe. Working with smoke and natural pigments, she aims to create pieces that are a meeting point of time and cultures.
All the work in ‘Membrane’ is finely made by the ancient method of coiling clay. The process is laborious, slow and exacting. It has been her practice for 35 years, becoming a working philosophy. Jane has held solo exhibitions in London, Bath and Salisbury, and delivers masterclasses in coiling throughout the country. She led the ceramics department at Bath College for 15 years and now works from her studio at Black Swan Arts. ‘Membrane’ celebrates her larger vessels and sculptures including ‘Grace Vessel’ recently installed in the church of St Michael and All Angels, Gwernesney, and includes new work inspired by her residency in Orkney.

In the heart of Somerset, a quiet revolution is brewing beneath the surface - literally. Loop: Frome is doing something radically simple yet quietly impactful: turning the town’s food waste into nutrient-rich compost and, in the process, cultivating a successful circular local economy. Loop was started by a group of six Edventure students, guided by local democracy pioneer Peter Macfadyen and fueled by a single mission: to help Frome close the loop on food waste - transforming discarded scraps into living soil, and keep that value circulating within the community. In doing so, Loop has not only reshaped how Frome handles its waste but also inspired similar initiatives across the UK and beyond through the growing Mycelium Composting Network.
At the core of Loop’s philosophy are the principles of circularity and regeneration. Rather than the wasteful take-make-dispose model that defines most economies, Loop embraces a closed-loop system. Their compost isn’t just a by-product - it’s a life force. Every handful teems with microbes, fungi and nutrients. Their method, which includes nine months of maturing in Ridan composters and custom-built boxes, results in a product that is biologically rich and environmentally powerful. Regeneration focuses on restoring and enhancing ecosystems. In composting, this means creating compost that not only enriches soil but also supports biodiversity, carbon sequestration and broader systems change.
Loop’s impact is most visible in its network of Compost Creation Stations - small, site-specific composting hubs that serve as engines of hyperlocal regeneration. Whether it’s turning food scraps from Frome Medical Practice into soil to grow vegetables for staff, partnering with Fair Frome’s food bank to enrich their community garden or working with the gardeners at Broadway Community Gardens, to enhance ecological
diversity, community wellbeing, and waste reduction. Each station, managed by a small team, brings composting down to a human scale and lets people engage directly with the cycle of waste and renewal. The team is expanding, with new stations planned, including one on the St John housing estate. Instead of mimicking large-scale, centralised waste management systems, Loop is modelling a distributed network that empowers communities and keeps resources local.
As the compost piles grow, so does the need for more hands and minds.
Recognising that not everyone can visit a compost site, Loop now offers direct-to-door compost deliveries.
Loop also offers tailored food waste collection services to local businesses. Collections are made using electric trikes manufactured in Frome by Cycles Maximus. A pilot cardboard collection program is also underway, adding another layer to Loop’s efforts to streamline sustainable business practices. Recognising that not everyone can visit a compost site, Loop now offers compost deliveries to your door. Options are flexible - make a one-off purchase, or subscribe to receive 25L or 50L of their premium living compost every three months, complete with access to the “Dr. Compost” chat - a community of gardeners sharing wisdom and support. It’s an easy way to nourish your garden while becoming part of a larger movement.
Loop is calling for volunteers, directors, and composters to help them expand their work and deepen their impact. Whether you’re interested in getting your hands dirty with composting or supporting behind the scenes with a spot of admin, there’s a place for everyone in the Loop ecosystem. But as they grow, Loop faces a pressing challenge. Their long-time home at Victoria Park is no longer available due to the expansion of Frome Town Rangers. The team is actively searching for a new base. The ideal space would be accessible, community-focussed, and suitable for composting operations. If you know of a potential location, or wish to support their relocation efforts, please contact them.
It’s been a busy and exciting first year for Frome’s newest gallery, which opened in Stony Street in June 2024. The Pedestal Gallery is a contemporary art gallery - family run, for artists, by artists - in the heart of our creative town, showing work by artists working locally, nationally and internationally. The gallery exhibits both two dimensional and three dimensional original work from established creators and emerging talents, with a focus on exhibiting some of the greatest collectable ceramics and studio pottery.
“The Pedestal Gallery is the realisation of a long held dream to run a gallery with my father Peter Hayes, a renowned sculptor, who has been making at his studio in Bath since 1982. The Hayes family have worked, exhibited and travelled together over the years to many shows and art fairs and,
along the way have met and worked with many wonderful artists. Our gallery now gives us the perfect opportunity to highlight and exhibit their work,” says Rachel, who runs Pedestal with her father Peter.
Rachel is a ceramic sculptor and, along with her husband Garry, also runs the much-loved Postscript, opposite the Pedestal. You will either find them or Joan, Peter or Justin Hayes (as well as Otis the dog) in the gallery.
“It’s a wonderful place to browse and we are always happy to discuss artists and artwork”.

The hugely popular Frome Open Art Trail, which started in 2007 as the ‘Frome Open Studios’ has grown in size and popularity over the years, and this year is set to be the biggest yet. Taking place during the Frome Festival, the trail sees artists in the town and surrounding villages open their studios and workspaces to exhibit a varied range of work from painting and textiles, jewellery, illustration, collage, sculpture, photography, printing, ceramics and glass.
The trail attracts artists from many walks of life, with a varied mix of professional and amateur and from many former occupations, such as prison librarian, world renowned knitwear designer, graphic designer, trompe l’oeil artist, science teacher, water colourist, dancer,
weaver, high powered business woman, potter, psychotherapist, textile artist.
Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artists and look behind the scenes, learn something about their techniques and buy work for sale. A trail brochure with maps and listings of participating artists is available in Frome’s shops, cafés and in galleries including Black Swan Arts. The brochure includes details, images and links to all the artists and their work, along with information on accessibility, parking and refreshments. The trail runs from 5th - 13th July, during the wonderful Frome Festival. The online brochure is also available at www. frome-open-art-trail.co.uk @ fromeopenarttrail
Nestled in 173 acres of ancient woodland, rewilded meadows, and a 7-acre lake, 42 Acres is a regenerative estate, nature reserve, and wellbeing retreat centre rooted in the vision of living in harmony with nature, self, and others. They offer a range of retreats and events exploring inner and outer wellbeing, and ecological and social restoration.
With rewilding of both people and nature being at the heart of their work, wild beavers have reshaped the landscape, creating wetlands and a cascade of biodiversity benefits, including the return of other species once thought extinct. The team’s approach is simple but radical: work with nature, not against it.
Food is central to the experience. 42’s ‘Soil-to-Gut’ philosophy connects personal and planetary health
through hyper-local, foraged, and organically-grown produce, often cooked outdoors over an open flame.
To offer a closer look, the estate is hosting a free interactive tour on Friday 18 July at 10am. Visitors can experience the site’s regenerative land, food, and nature restoration projects firsthand. Book your free place, and discover more events at 42acres.com

It’s part history tour, part flashmob, part comedy sketch - and fully unforgettable. And then there’s Karenoke, hosted by Karen Pickering, a karaoke night quite unlike any other. With a larger-than-life host, dramatic monologues and plenty of audience sass, it’s karaoke with a comedic twist that keeps regulars - and newcomers - coming back for more.
Rare Species has performed at Glastonbury Festival, Bath Comedy Festival, Frome Festival, and events by Children’s World, always drawing audiences in with their immersive style and joyful absurdity. But their talents aren’t limited to the festival circuit. The company also caters for private bookings -
