The List Frome - February 2025

Page 1

Rose Langley

Last October marked the eleventh year of me running The List. It was a huge milestoneover a decade in the same role is something entirely new to me, as I tend to get bored easily. When I bought this humble mag from one of its originators all those years ago, it was a surprise return to publishing for me. In my twenties I had worked at Venue Magazine, a now defunct Bristol publication that was in print for over thirty years. In fact, my dad had worked for them before I was born, reviewing pubs (if you can call that work!). Venue had been proudly independent, beloved by the people of Bristol, and the absolute go-to when you needed to know what was going on in that big, colourful city.

Unfortunately, a year or so after I started, they were bought out by the Daily Mail group, and things were never the same again. I was there during this handover, my daytime attire changing, by order of the management, from casual and comfortable to suited and booted overnight. The systems changed, as did our relationships with our customers and advertisers, as we were “encouraged” to tow the party line - professional over personal in all things. It was the beginning of the end for Venue, and a slow demise ensued. The old hacks who had written with love and knowledge about the city were slowly

let go, or given ever-decreasing workloads. The sales teams were at the forefront of everything and, bit by bit, this changed the way local businesses saw the publication. Less money came in. By this time I was on my way out, looking for pastures new. But sure enough, a few years later, the very last Venue Magazine was published. It was a sad day for Bristol, a city so vibrant with music, art and independence.

When we discuss the importance of independent businesses, it can sometimes seem like a trendy topic and not especially important. But when large businesses take over, what we lose is immense. We trade the personal touch for the professional look, and lose the connections with our community that businesses run by locals, families and individuals bring in abundance. Running a fully independent publication is still something I love, and my ability to steer this ship in whatever direction I choose is the reason I never tire of being at the helm. Frome is full of independent businesses, run by people you know, whose kids go to school with yours, who know your name, are your neighbour, who you walk your dog with in the park. They are at the heart of our strong and flourishing community, and are something we can all support and celebrate, for many years to come.

Merge

Black Swan Arts, 11th January – 23rd February

Twelve emerging and established textile and mixed media artists, all graduates and alumni of Bath Spa University, are collaboratively creating a dynamic body of work in the Long Gallery and Round Tower.

Join the artists to explore themes on the visible and invisible traces of human identity, voices, memory, place, object and existence through collaborative and socially engaged stitching, knitting, markmaking, material manipulation, installation and performance.

Making together in time and space, stillness, motion, reality and hyper reality builds an understanding of how hands, body and materials merge together to create a common connection between different bodies of the world.

Elliot Galvin, The Ruin - Album Launch

The Lucky Chance, 26th Feb, 7.30pm – 10.00pm

An artist with little need for introductions, Elliot Galvin is a long-time trailblazer in the UK jazz firmament, with four solo albums that have seen him top album of the year at the likes of Downbeat and Jazzwise, as well as being a member of the Mercury-nominated Dinosaur, and collaborating with Shabaka Hutchings, Emma-Jean Thackray, Norma Winstone, Marius Neset and Mark Lockheart.

Scheduled for release this February via independent London tastemaker label Gearbox Records, “The Ruin” marks a new start for Galvin. This is his most personal album to date, written on his childhood piano and inspired by the bleak yet beautiful landscapes of his hometown, the music free-flows between serpentine piano and modular synth lines, weaving and colliding around ephemeral vocalisations, deceivingly grooveheavy percussion, and intricate, soulful flute improvisations.

Alfie Moore: a Face for Radio

Merlin Theatre, 14th February, 7.30pm

Thirty years of shift-work, initially in the Sheffield steelworks and then as a copper on the beat (where he was punched in the face quite a lot), has left Alfie Moore with what he calls ‘a face for radio’. A face not so much ‘lived in’ as inhabited by a settlement of squatters, with little regard to property maintenance and repair. In his 40s a surprising career shift turned middle-aged Alfie from street cop to BBC radio star. But, when TV fame beckoned, could he grasp it or was he past it?

An Uncommon Thread

Hauser & Wirth Somerset

‘An Uncommon Thread’ features ten contemporary artists living and working in the UK. The group exhibition highlights the transformative power of unconventional mediums in evoking personal and collective memories. Each artist demonstrates an unwavering commitment to the integral role that materials and techniques play in their creative process: employing unexpected painting surfaces, adapting formal craft traditions and repurposing discarded products into compelling works. Through individual investigations of identity, tradition, nature, fantasy and the environment, the artists invite viewers to engage with the rich stories woven into each work.

This multidisciplinary exhibition follows ‘Present Tense’ (2024) and is part of an ongoing initiative at Hauser & Wirth Somerset that champions

emerging and mid-career artists beyond Hauser & Wirth’s roster. An events and learning program will run alongside the exhibition, engaging with key themes addressed throughout the galleries, driven by a curiosity and inventive approach to materiality and process.

An Uncommon Thread features Rachael Louise Bailey, Max Boyla, KV Duong, Charlotte Edey, Nour Jaouda, Lindsey Mendick,Jack O’Brien, Nengi Omuku, Tai Shani and Georg Wilson. The exhibition is in collaboration with Alice Black, Berntson Bhattacharjee, Carl Freedman Gallery, Gathering, Ginny on Frederick, Pippy Houldsworth Gallery and Union Pacific.

Kift Ceramics Work, rest and clay

In a town so well known for its flourishing arts community, news of a new creative endeavour is always met with enthusiasm. Enter Kift Ceramics Studio, based at Black Swan Arts, a new space that offers open access facilities and courses for those wishing to learn. “I have some brilliant specialist course teachers lined up,” says Annabel Pettigrew, the force behind Kift. Annabel is an artist and lecturer, currently teaching on Fine Art at Arts University Bournemouth, and as Course Lead for the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design at Wiltshire College, Salisbury.

“Having lectured in Higher Education for the past 13 years I’ve seen the decline of tutors and resources as universities struggle to recruit and retain students. Lots of students now go as far as Foundation and

then decide they don’t want to go to university as they don’t want to get into huge amounts of debt. I see Kift as an alternative learning space, for all levels of experience and pathway.”

Within her own practice, Annabel uses techniques that access the unconscious mind, creating a visual language unique to the processing of lived experience relating to grief, manifesting in astral realms and psychic landscapes. “I run an artist collective called ‘Throes of Grief’ which I put together following a period of life transforming grief, and my focus is to hold a space for artists and audience whose lives have been transformed by grief. My practice manifests in ceramics, sculpture, textiles, sound and installation.

“The

studio

is a place where people can come to learn, engage, make and contribute to the space.”

Kift Ceramics Studio is an extension of my ceramics practice, but I want it to also function as a space to grow and exchange ceramic practices with other artists and practitioners. The studio is a place where people can come to learn, engage, make and contribute to the space.”

Annabel has previously worked as an artist facilitator and production manager, delivering large scale exhibitions and work in the public realm for internationally renowned artists, working with institutions and commissioning bodies including Mori Art Museum, Tate, Victoria Miro, New Art Gallery Walsall, V&A Museum, and Contemporary Art Society amongst others.  “My now husband and

I moved to Frome in 2018 after my dad unexpectedly died, as it made us stop and think about what we wanted our lives to truly be like. Frome seemed like the ideal place to come to start a family, so we got married in 2019, and in 2023 finally welcomed the birth of our daughter. Like many southwest art people, I found that moving to this part of the world suddenly allowed me the time to focus on growing my practice.”

Kift Ceramics is housed at Studio no.9, upstairs at Black Swan Arts.

James West Design

Over the past twelve years, graphic designer James West has been honing his skills, but his talent was obvious from an early age. “Back in school, drawing was my superpower, impressing classmates with doodles and sketches. That passion stuck with me and eventually led me to design. After university, I landed my first gig as a junior designer at a London studio, and the rest, as they say, is history!” James built his career in design, working in advertising agencies for all sorts of clients. But brandinglogos and visual identities - really got him going. “I love collaborating with clients and crafting brands that resonate. It’s like giving their vision a voice, and it never gets old. A solid brand builds trust, makes your business memorable, and helps you connect emotionally.”

James is drawn to bold yet approachable design: “Something clean, modern, and with a bit of a personal touch. Think minimalism, but with character and a story. I love when a design feels timeless and human, like it could live on a billboard but still belong in a scrapbook. My process is a mix of detective work and creative play. It’s all about asking the right questions, diving into what makes each business unique, and finding creative solutions.”

During his three years in Frome, James has enjoyed getting to know local businesses and collaborated with Johnny Szymanski last year. “We teamed up to design graphics for a range of caps for his menswear store. It was a really fun project, and who doesn’t love Johnny’s style.”

When he’s not designing, James is all about family time. Whether it’s chasing his cocker spaniel, Raffy, around the countryside, exploring Frome’s bars and restaurants, or relaxing with a pile of Lego. “Yes, I’m a grown-up who still loves Lego,” he laughs.

James grew up in Surrey and, after living in New Zealand for five years with his Kiwi wife Vicki, they found themselves in Somerset. “We had two kids,

got married and decided to move back to the UK to be closer to family. That’s when we stumbled upon Frome - it felt like the perfect fit. Three years later, we’re still here and loving it.”

Thrive Pilates

Fitness for Every Body

Meet Laura Carter, the passionate woman behind Thrive Pilates, Frome’s newest Pilates studio. Thrive Pilates is a space where everyone - all bodies, all ages, all fitness levels – can go to discover the joy of movement and the many benefits of Pilates.

Laura’s journey with Pilates has been one of transformation. “Ever since I was a child I struggled with undiagnosed and unmanaged hypermobility, which caused frequent joint dislocations, stiffness, pain, and a fear of movement. I started Pilates after being recommended by a physiotherapist, and it’s completely changed my life.” She says Pilates helped to stabilise and strengthen her joints, reduce her pain entirely and find the joy in movement.

“Pilates took me from merely surviving to truly thriving, and that’s where the name Thrive Pilates comes from. Pilates has given me the confidence to explore other activities, and I’ve found a love for staying active and living life to the fullest.” Laura’s experience has made her passionate about sharing this practice with others. “I’ve seen how it can improve strength, flexibility, build confidence and overall wellbeing, and I’m so excited to help others experience that too.”

At Thrive Pilates, you’ll find a welcoming space, offering group mat work classes as well as private one-to-one and two-to-one sessions. Whether you’re new to exercise, or an experienced practitioner, Laura will help you feel supported and empowered to achieve your goals.

Join Somerset Farmers’ Market’s mission

in regenerating Frome’s local food economy

If you already pop down to Frome farmers’ market every second Saturday of the month on Boyle Cross, you’ll know it’s a very social kind of market. And not just among its visitors. There’s a camaraderie between the 20 or so producers trading there – the kind that is amounting to what Hannah Steenbergen, who sells beef from her herd of regenerative Shetland cows, calls a “local food movement”. “The market’s helped me reach a lot more people in Frome,” says Hannah, “and selling here has given me a sense of being part of something bigger.”

Since their beginnings only 28 years ago, farmers’ markets have become an important way to connect local food and local people, on a human and environmental level as much as a commercial one. Generally, small-scale producers are kinder on the land and on nature, while markets such as the one in Frome support farmers who reject the use of fossilfuel agrichemicals, such as pesticides, in favour of producing higher quality nutrient-dense food with a low carbon footprint to feed their local community.

While organic-certified produce sold in large retailers does exist, very little of what you spend

on it stays in town. “Supermarkets take a big cut,” says Lyn Flanders, who trades as Glastonbury Ferments on Somerset Farmers’ Market’s section of the Frome Independent.

“Besides, this is an artisan product you can’t really get anywhere else.”

Speaking of artisanal producers, regular traders at SFM’s Saturday market include Bath Soft Cheese, mushroom and tincture peddlers Fungi Mental, Rye Bakery, deli and butchery Somer Valley Farms, biscuit and cake maker Hoolee’s, Wainwright’s honey, and Great Taste award-winning White Lake Cheese. All amounting to more than the sum of their parts. “Another great thing about the farmers’ markets is the other fabulous traders that become great friends and support,” says Lyn. “That’s really special.”

SFM’s next markets take place at Boyle Cross on Saturday 8th February, 9am - 1pm, and as part of the Frome Independent on 2nd March, 10am - 3pm. Further info and dates at somersetfarmersmarkets.co.uk.
