Blimey, Christmas is a complicated affair. In my family we have a four-year rotation, which includes different parental houses but also takes into account in-laws and their families, so that everyone gets a look in! Christmas Day here, Boxing Day there, and all the days in between rushing between family friends and extended family. I like it — in fact I love it — and I feel deeply lucky to have so many people to factor into my Christmases. But I do have a yearning for the Christmases of my youth: their simplicity and the fact that I didn’t have to do anything, just receive presents and watch fun TV (can you imagine!).

When I was a kid we would rotate between grandparents each year and, although we lived about half an hour’s drive from both of them, we would stay for a week! I cannot comprehend how much work this caused my grandmothers (because it was them who did everything, with help from aunts too, I imagine — sheesh), but all I remember is the smell of the food, the warmth of the houses, the fun with cousins, and the childish joy of anticipation for what I might find in my stocking (palm-reading fish, polystyrene aeroplanes, wind-
up toys, satsumas). Each grandparents’ house offered a distinctly different festive experience. One was a big house in the countryside, full of cousins, the chiming of grandfather clocks and lots of cosy traditions. The other, a town house, had no cousins but very few rules for me and my brother and lots of fun adults — my grandma would play Fats Waller on the piano while sozzled grown-ups sang along, drink in hand, and my brother and I tied their shoelaces together — a story I’m sure I’ve shared already.
My husband’s family, in relaxed contrast to my own, don’t do much for Christmas, so he is at liberty to be pulled from pillar to post by my lot, and I think after almost fifteen years he’s used to it. But we draw the line, for his sake as much as for my parents’, at staying with any of them for a week.
Whilst I deeply romanticise this time of year, I also love that, though Christmas in our family can be a little complicated, we’re now also given the space to do our own thing. We aren’t sure what that is yet, but as someone who loves a good tradition, I’m very much looking forward to making a few of our own.

Spring 2026 Series
For twenty-two years, Frome Concerts Group has presented performances by some of the UK’s most accomplished professional musicians in the beautiful surroundings of Rook Lane Chapel. Many performers appear at the start of their careers and later return as international stars, drawn back by the superb acoustics and the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Held on Sundays, the concerts, most of them an hour long, offer an ideal opportunity to enjoy classical music in an informal setting. Musicians introduce the works as they go along, and audiences are invited to arrive early for complimentary refreshments. It’s a perfect way to dip a toe into classical music if you’re unsure whether it’s for you.
The Spring 2026 series opens with a special fulllength concert by the Aquinas Piano Trio, one of the UK’s most sought-after chamber groups. They last performed here in 2019, and their concerts now
are typically held at prestigious venues such as the Wigmore Hall. Their programme features Beethoven and Mendelssohn—tuneful, joyful and just the thing for a gloomy winter afternoon.
The remaining three hour-long recitals could not be more varied: a vocal trio whose haunting, mesmerising sound borders on the otherworldly; an accordionist capable of conjuring the richness of a full orchestra; and Meet the Viol, an hour of Baroque music performed on viol and lute by two of the finest early-music specialists.

Cult Bristolian artist Emily Breeze is known for her distinct brand of pop noir, combining punk attitude, powerful performance and a dark sense of humour. Her music blends post-punk swagger with baroque pop drama, soaked in synths, cigarettes and sarcasm, all beautifully illustrated by her allstar band: Rob Norbury (lead guitar), Andy Sutor (drums), Helen Stanley (keys/synth) and George Caveney (bass).

Vallis Farm Pillars, Progress
and Plans
Vallis Farm has come a long way since the team first sat in its cold, draughty farmhouse three years ago. The scale of the work ahead was daunting, but so was the site’s potential. With a blank canvas, they built a business plan grounded not in convention but in a set of core pillars that reflected their values — an approach they felt could only flourish in a place like Frome.

The first pillar is nature. Though ten acres is small by farming standards, the land supports an impressive diversity of species and has significant capacity for carbon sequestration. Since 2022, the team has planted hundreds of metres of hedging, more than sixty trees and double that number of shrubs in a growing forest garden. A young orchard of seventeen fruit trees is taking shape, while grazing sheep, scythes used for path-cutting, and expanses of wild growth all contribute to a landscape teeming with life. Regular wildlife surveys show clear signs of recovery. The addition of a natural swimming pool — completed just six months ago — has brought an explosion of aquatic biodiversity and consistently excellent water quality.
Food is the second pillar. Conscious of issues around food security and nutrition, the team believes land ownership carries responsibility, including the need to grow food. Their veg box scheme, now with more than sixty subscribers, has been enthusiastically supported by the town. Its success has allowed them to collaborate with other local growers within thirty miles, and the new head grower, Charlie, will soon expand the scheme with additional produce options. The farmhouse itself has been beautifully renovated and now hosts supper clubs and team away days, all celebrating produce grown on the farm.
Community plays an equally important role. Many core team members have deep roots in Frome and understand its rebellious, supportive spirit. Vallis Farm champions paid labour over heavy machinery and has developed studios to cultivate a strong community of makers who form a key part of the farm’s identity. Friends of Vallis members can book swims in the natural pool, enjoy the wood-fired sauna and explore the gardens. On these open days, visitors can buy surplus veg, eggs, preserves and cordials, and gather in the farmhouse for coffee, cake, soup and famously good cinnamon buns. The farm also hosts regular facilitated events and lively seasonal festivals, complete with appearances from Lady V (Rare Species), known for leading spirited welly-wanging sessions. The atmosphere is inclusive and down-toearth — never pretentious, just passionate.

Wellness forms the fourth pillar. The team believes that time outdoors and nutritious food are foundational to wellbeing, but they also offer yoga, qigong, baby massage, cold-water swimming and sauna sessions. Two off-grid shepherds’ huts, each with a wood burner, provide magical retreats for guests wanting to disconnect and sleep under the stars.
The final pillar is learning. The development of Vallis Farm has been a continuous learning journey, and the team is committed to sharing that experience. Workshops on gardening, cooking and crafts are already scheduled for 2026, and a major focus is the training of future market gardeners and regenerative farmers through accredited courses. With the support of subscribers, members and the wider community, the farm aims to create opportunities for young people — from meaningful placements to potential outdoor careers.
