M

erry Christmas Frome! I was pottering about, tidying up, with the radio on in the background. As I conceded defeat in the eternal game of washing-up jenga I play with my husband, someone on the radio said: “I think we can all agree, 2020 has been a dreadful year.” Well, yes, we can all agree to that. And looking for those bits of blue sky amid the dark clouds can seem futile - especially to those who haven’t had the chance to look up and see the sky.

But it is human nature to seek both the best and the worst angles on any situation, in the vague hope of controlling its outcome.

here we are at our best when we are supporting each other During the first lockdown, I had a nagging fear that The List was a goner. The small business, which I’d worked at for over six years, might never return. A business which had seen me through the early days of motherhood, given me independence, created friendships and allowed me creative freedom, might all just fall apart. Did The List have a future? When I put the feelers out, the reaction was overwhelming. Businesses still wanted to advertise, stories still had to be told, and I discovered, to my very great pride, that readers felt a strong sense of ownership of The List. They

saw it as a publication which represents their town – something I will forever be humbled by.

With this in mind, I’ve been turning my thoughts to the other small businesses here. Along with the town’s many charities and local projects, they are the beating heart of Frome. Their closure, at a time when hopes were high of recovering from the losses of the first lockdown, has been a huge blow. But this is Frome. And here we are at our best when we are supporting each other. So it’s no surprise that our independent businesses have been holding each other up, sharing posts on social media, creating an even stronger online community, and finding ways of working through the situation they find themselves in.

We can all hold them up too – by spending locally as much as we can. People power has always been a very Frome thing. Our ability to support each other is what sets our town apart. This year I have been blown away by the passion and resilience in our community, from charities and businesses, residents young and old, folk doing food deliveries and pushing notes through doors. We’ve all been held up by our collective understanding of the importance of our brilliant, vibrant community.

Frome, YOU are that bit of blue sky in an otherwise dark year. Keep it up (and shop locally!).

Ding Dong, On Yer Bike!

Next year Black Swan Arts are celebrating their 35th anniversary. They receive no external funding, and the pot is almost empty. Thankfully, a recent Arts Council emergency grant means they can now stay open until March 2021.

Ding is Frome’s new mobile community bike workshop, set up by a team of students from Edventure’s 15th start-up course. The team of seven students has fundraised over £2000 to kick-start the project, with help from the Postcode Lottery, to run monthly pop-up bike repair days, starting on Saturday 12th December, 10.00am – 14.00pm in three Frome locations: The Welsh Mill Hub, The Bandstand at Victoria Park and The Community Hub at the Mount (there is no formal charge, though donations will be greatly appreciated)

Did you know that many of our incredible independent shops in Frome and beyond began their life in the Black Swan studio spaces? Annette Gabbedey, Christina Oswin, Mel Day, Kate Cooke, Steven Jenkins and Phaedra Politis amongst many others. Black Swan Arts supports artists to take the step from working quietly in their garden sheds to a small public shop at low rent – studios where you can see their craftsmanship up close, buy direct and commission bespoke work.

Did you know that a dedicated team of volunteers manage the largest curated art competition in the country for young people, and that recent Art Open judges include Michael Eavis and Mariella Frostrup?

Frome’s arts centre wants to share your stories, to inspire the next generation, people of all ages and backgrounds, to have access to creativity in all shapes and sizes by connecting with people, learning new skills and re-discovering hidden passions. They want to collaborate and shine a light on the incredible creative talent we are so lucky to have on our doorsteps. But without your support they will not be able to continue.

One of Ding’s goals is to make cycling more accessible, by empowering people through learning basic repairs for their bikes with the help and expertise from professionals around Frome.”

The Frome Independent Supporting independent businesses and makers online

T

he Frome Independent are usually gearing up to their busiest market of them all, with their December event attracting well over 10,000 visitors in pre-Covid times. It was always exciting to see so many shoppers choosing to spend their money with small independents, creatives and primary producers, rather than with multinational businesses.

So, as we approach the Christmas shopping season, we are thinking of all of the independent businesses who are continuing to innovate and work hard to adapt to the new measures, including The Frome Independent, who have moved their events online, hosting virtual markets on Instagram stories, and compiling a trader directory on their website.

It has been fantastic for customers to be able to connect virtually with traders in this way, even though it’s not the same as the real thing. The market team are counting down the days until live events get the green light, but in the meantime, they are promoting and championing independent makers, producers and Frome’s independent retail community.

Seeing this community continue to support each other online has been a ray of hope. Now more than ever is

T

he Frome Open Art Trail is a celebration of Frome’s brilliant creative community. Now, applications are open for new local artists and makers, interested in taking part next year. After the 2020 trail went online, plans are afoot for the 2021 trail, which take place alongside the Frome Festival on the 3rd – 11th July.

Over the last few years, the Frome Open Art Trail has grown in strength and reputation, with an increasing number of visitors who relish meeting, and buying work directly from, artists. The artists and makers who take part show a diverse range of work, exhibiting from studios, homes and venues. There is affordable art for everyone including ceramics, paintings, textiles, photography, glass and jewellery.

Frome supports student, emerging, self-employed and professional artists – many are now seriously struggling financially as so many exhibitions, art projects and community events have had to be cancelled or put on hold.

A

fter a difficult year for many hospitality businesses, 2020 might not be an obvious choice for launching a new bar. But with such high expectations and excitement from the already loyal following at the ever-popular Bistro Lotte, it was hoped that Bar Lotte would prove a hit, and it seems that those hopes have been fulfilled.

Looking towards their reopening in December, the Bar Lotte team has been busy creating a stunning new winter drinks menu. “Knowing that the lovely people of Frome will be looking forward to spreading some Christmas cheer, we can’t wait to welcome customers old and new! Mulled cider and mulled wine will be included on the menu, to tempt people out on those cold December evenings.”

The old London Stores grocery, built in the 1830s, and more recently housing a wine shop, is now home to Bar Lotte, where the beautifully renovated interior and exterior include traditional features along with unique contemporary design elements.

To compliment their drinks menu, Bar Lotte offers delicious sharing platters, (charcuterie or fromage) in the evening, and their hugely popular cheese fondue.

“Customers love the melted French cheese with bread, roast potatoes, roast vegetables, and even rump steak for the meat-eaters. Perfect with a glass of our house red,” says Lotte. Coffee and daily specials, including baguettes, soup du jour and a daily tart, are all served in the bar, which is open from noon, seven days a week.

They will also be serving the bistro supper menu at the bar on Sunday evenings when they re-open.

“We were so excited to be able to open Bar Lotte at the end of this summer, especially in light of everything that has happened this year, and the response we’ve had from the local community has been very heartening. To be able to offer a cozy, warm and welcoming space for people to catch up with loved ones and friends has been such a pleasure for us.” Says Lotte.

Bar Lotte has a fantastic cocktail menu and two highly skilled and energetic cocktail barmen, Leszek and Koschin. “This pair have worked incredibly hard to help us get the bar up and running and they are fantastic at what they do. We are very lucky to have them on board.”

Bistro and Bar Lotte, now offer a total of ten boutique en suite rooms, two of which are family rooms, perfect for visiting over the festive season. “Frome has so many wonderful independent shops, and we hope to be able to accommodate Christmas shoppers this December with our midweek dinner bed & breakfast offer, which will also support other small local businesses and keep Frome thriving,” adds Lotte.

Meanwhile, at Bistro Lotte Things may be a little different this year but at Bistro Lotte they are excitedly planning for Christmas.

“We are still here to help you celebrate in the safety of our warm and cozy restaurant,” says Lotte. “You can join us for supper or Christmas drinks in the bar with work colleagues or family, and Christmas gift vouchers will also be available for the restaurant, bar and rooms. We are getting ready to dress the restaurant for Christmas and with our delicious new winter menu, we hope you will join us to celebrate the festive season.”

hen it comes to brilliant places to eat, Frome has been coming on in leaps and bounds over the last ten years. But lockdown gave this progress a boost as cafés and pubs turned their hands to takeaways and a host of new and entrepreneurial foodies turned their daydreams into realities. Frome’s takeaway scene has gone from being great to being almost extraordinary. Here is our rundown of some of the best takeaways for your supper on the sofa.

Taco Dirty To Me Taco dirty to me is run by husband and wife team Tom and Chelsie – two foodies who have always dreamed starting their own food business.

Lockdown offered them the opportunity to get started and they haven’t looked back. “We make everything from scratch each week, including tortilla shells, salsas, pickles, hot sauce, sides and even the seitan for our vegan options,” Chelsie told us. “We collaborate with Flow Bar (when not in lockdown) on a Tuesday evening to bring you ‘Taco Tuesdays’ where we deliver right to your table! Cocktails and tacos - the dream!”

Nook Nook came to life in September 2018. Inspired by trips to Australia, the owners want to create a teeny tiny Aussie-style eatery in the heart of Frome, with speciality coffee, superfood smoothies, cold press juice, acai smoothie bowls, poke bowls, buddha bowls, broth bowls and sweet treats. Fat Radish Following the success of their take-away service back in July, the Fat Radish will continue creating restaurant standard food for you to enjoy at home, throughout the whole of December. It’s always with a touch of trepidation that I greet the winter months; the slight heart-dropping moment at the realisation that the clocks are winding backwards and with them, the bringing of the dark.

With the dark, though, comes fire. We light the woodburner as the dusk creeps up on us in the late afternoon, and then everything is alright in our little world. As the weeks slip by and we become used to our pyro rituals, my own thoughts turn to forthcoming festivities. Come December - free time allowing - I will have mixed and steamed a pudding to the recipe I devised eons ago, made mincemeat, steeped some sort of hedgerow liqueur, and plotted festive food.

This year is likely to be somewhat restrained when it comes to celebratory gatherings. Nevertheless, for all the pockets of joy thrown up by this strange year, as well as for all the hope we hold for the coming one, celebrate we shall.

If you plan to do the same, open a bottle of something fizzy and make a plate of these melty, gently crunchy discs to pass around.

Makes enough for several diminutive gatherings: 100g walnut halves 1 tbsp light oil 1 tbsp runny honey 1/4 tsp salt Scant 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper, plus more for sprinkling A good grinding of black pepper 100g butter, cold, cut into cubes 150g plain flour 75g Pecorino cheese, finely grated A bushy sprig of rosemary, leaves finely chopped Preheat the oven to 160C/gas mark 3.

Mix the walnuts with the oil and honey and spread them out on a non-stick baking tray. Bake for about 12-15 minutes until light golden brown, stirring halfway through. Remove from the oven and stir in the salt, black pepper and cayenne, before leaving the nuts to cool on the tray. (Make sure you give them the occasional prod while they sit, otherwise they’ll glue together completely.)

Once cool, weigh out 85g of the nuts. (The rest are yours to snaffle as you please.) Place them in a blender and pulse until they resemble breadcrumbs. Add the butter and flour, and pulse again until well blended. Add the Pecorino and rosemary and keep pulsing until the mixture is threatening to come together.

Tip the crumbly dough into some baking paper and bring it together with your hands. Shape the dough into a log about 40cm long (or divide into two and make 20cm lengths) and roll up in the baking paper.

Place in the freezer for 15-20 minutes, or until firm.

Indeed, if you’re making these in advance, simply leave the roll in the fridge until needed.

When thoughts turn to popping corks, preheat the oven to 200C/gas mark 6 and unwrap the log.

Slice it into discs no thicker than 4mm and place on a lined or non-stock baking tray, spaced apart.

Pepper the discs with a small pinch of cayenne and bake for 8 minutes until crisp, then remove with a palette knife to a cooling rack for a few brief minutes before serving. With bubbles.

In the market, all was quiet. The fish man was bagging me up a slab of ling and a slithery mass of squid. Then a nasal Cockney voice split the air. “Come outside!” it begged, “Come outside! There’s a luvverly moon out there.” The fish man and I looked at each other conspiratorially. We both knew who the singer was, and that made us feel hopelessly ancient. “Takes me back,” he said. Yeah: to about 1962, I thought.

The bloke on the music stall clearly had a job lot of early sixties hits CDs he wanted to shift. Which was why the little-missed tones of Mike Sarne were floating across the car park like the smell of rancid chips. So, as I moved on round the market, my twelve-year-old self hovered beside me, along with the varied musical talents of Karl Denver, The Tokens, Adam Faith and much, much worse. By the time I reached the birdfood stall, Helen Shapiro was belting out “Walking Back to Happiness”.

There was a grizzled guy in front of me, and we too swapped nostalgic eye rolls at the song. It was as if we were members of a secret society with exclusive access to arcane and embarrassing musical knowledge. After all, no-one else was going to recognise these rather terrible old tunes, were they? Six decades old, at that.

A goose waddled across my grave. I shuddered, bought a big bag of fat balls and turned away, humming “whoopa oh yay yay” to myself.

At that moment, I heard the same refrain being bawled out beside me. A knot of cheery herberts, average age fifteen, was strolling past, singing along with the CD. And they knew the words! How the hell did that happen? Mike Sarne, Helen Shapiro – even Russ Conway – were tiny fragments of my long-ago childhood, but they don’t mean much to me now. What could they possibly mean to kids whose soundtrack consists of Dababy, J.P.Saxe, Powfu and Jawsh685?

But then, musical tastes are often baffling. My 84-year-old neighbour told me that, when he and his wife were courting, they used to spend Saturday nights in the local pub. “After about ten pints I did used to get on the table and sing Elvis Presley songs. My wife did hate it. She’d tell me to sit down and not make a fool of myself. Funny thing was, though – she did really love Elvis after that.”
