I

f you grew up around these parts, you will possibly (depending on age) have similar memories of the summer attractions frequented by families during the impossibly long holidays. I think my most vivid memory is a combination of places, but the same event - that of me NOT going down….The Death Slide. Longleat and Bowood both had these vertical long drops, He made NOT reserved, or so it seemed going down in my youth, for the kids the Death Slide who ought to be able to boast that their middle look cool. name was Danger. Like my brother, who would fling himself over the barrier without a care in the world, or my best mate’s big brother, who had (and still has) a maniacal look in his eye, going down at odd angles and laughing as he did so. Many was the time that I would dangle there, holding on to the bar above the drop, only to yell for rescue from a parent, and I would always wonder why I - someone generally thought of as loud and confident - could not do what even the wettestlooking kids seemed to do with ease.

Last summer I went back to Bowood, with my own kids, to meet the aforementioned best mate and her kids, to start the whole cycle again almost forty years later. The sign declaring 12 AND UNDER was the relief I did not know I needed, as if some part of me had expected that this would be the time to finally defeat my nemesis.

My eldest son is a big, bouncy, Tiggerish sort of person. Incredibly physical, agile and strong. The anticipation of him defeating my foe with a smooth drop was growing - the shame of my youth would be erased when my firstborn jumped that barrier, dangled momentarily, and then WHOOSH. My mate’s kids whizzed down, other people’s kids whizzed down. And there, hanging on the bar, in a tableau seemingly dedicated to the memory of his mother’s childhood, was my son. “No thanks,” he said, almost casually, “I’m not doing that,” and hauled himself back up to safety. He made NOT going down the Death Slide look cool. Cautious, and cool.

Which I choose to take as a reprieve from the next generation. So thanks, Kid.

Merlin Theatre, 8th August, 7pm Love, laughter and a little lunacy await in a world where fairies meddle, lovers quarrel and magic runs wild.

This summer, audiences are invited to enjoy a breathtaking open-air performance of William Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Set in the heart of an enchanted forest, the story follows four young lovers as they flee the constraints of society and find themselves in a magical realm ruled by mischievous fairies, feuding royalty and a troupe of enthusiastic but hopeless amateur actors.

What unfolds is a night of mistaken identities, magical transformations and love delightfully turned upside down. Featuring Shakespeare’s dazzling verse alongside Folksy’s signature blend of live music, audience interaction and frantic multi-role performances, this promises to be an entertaining evening for all ages.

The performance will take place outdoors at the E.C.O.S. Amphitheatre. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets, cushions and chairs. Picnics are welcome, although drinks should be purchased from the venue’s bar. In the event of bad weather, the performance will move indoors.

The Black Swan Arts Open 2026 brings together artists and makers working across a wide range of disciplines and media, with selected works chosen by a distinguished panel of contemporary arts professionals. Alongside the exhibition, a generous programme of prizes and awards celebrates outstanding artistic achievement.

As Black Swan Arts’ flagship exhibition, the Open showcases artists at every stage of their careers from across the region and beyond. Founded in 1986, Black Swan Arts has played a central role in Frome’s cultural life for four decades, with this year’s Open marking the organisation’s 40th anniversary.

The 2026 exhibition has been selected by an independent panel of guest judges, separate from the organisation’s Board and Programming Group, ensuring a thoughtful, open-minded and rigorous selection process.

Selected works will be exhibited in the Long Gallery at Black Swan Arts from Saturday 8th August until Sunday 27th September 2026.

Lucky 7’s Vallis Farm, 30th August, 9am–9pm Lucky 7’s is hitting the road as Frome’s communitydriven music collective brings its trademark atmosphere and eclectic soundtrack to the kitchen garden at Vallis Farm on Sunday 30th August.

Music lovers are invited to bring along seven favourite 7-inch vinyl records, whatever the genre, and book a DJ slot to share their selection. With no restrictions on musical style, the day promises a diverse soundtrack created entirely by the community. Alongside the music, there will be plenty of food and drink available, including a licensed bar, as well as the opportunity to book sessions in the natural swimming pool and sauna.

Vallis Farm offers plenty of outdoor space for families and friends to relax and enjoy the day together.

Entry is free. As the event is raising money for charity, DJ sessions are charged according to the chosen time slot, so early booking is recommended. Participants are welcome to book multiple sessions, although back-to-back slots should be avoided where possible. Bringing more than seven records is also advised, just in case.

Each DJ session lasts 20 minutes. Swimming and sauna sessions must be booked separately.

The event is raising funds for Vallis Farm Education Centre CIC, an initiative dedicated to improving young people’s access to nature and careers within the land-based industries. Lucky 7’s is a community organisation focused on bringing people together through music in a relaxed, welcoming environment. With no egos and plenty of good tunes, everyone is encouraged to come along, bring friends, family and favourite records, and get involved.

As You Like It Merlin Theatre, 23rd August, 6pm In As You Like It, Shakespeare explores love in all its forms. Four couples meet in the mysterious Forest of Arden, each experiencing romance in a very different way. One pair rushes headlong into passion, another is instantly captivated by love at first sight, while a third delights in teasing and rejection. The fourth pair take matters even further, playfully blurring identities and roles until flirtation becomes both joyful and challenging, pushing love itself to its limits.

Throughout the summer, Shakespeare’s muchloved comedy will be performed where its story belongs – in the great outdoors. Presented by a five-strong cast of classically trained professional actors, this production showcases the quality for which multi-award-winning Illyria has become renowned over more than three decades of outdoor touring.

Audiences can look forward to an unforgettable evening of laughter, romance and outstanding theatre beneath the stars.

The performance will take place outdoors at the E.C.O.S. Amphitheatre. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets, cushions and chairs. Picnics are welcome, although drinks should be purchased from the venue’s bar. In the event of bad weather, the performance will move indoors.

Frome Carnival Funday & Dog Show Victoria Park, 15th August, 12 - 5pm A wonderful day out for all the family, including your four-legged friends. The Carnival Funday has something for everyone, with local stalls, a Bonnie Baby competition, fun fair, food and drink stalls, bar and, of course, the ever popular dog show.

Frome Carnival is a registered charity, and these fundraising events help to ensure the future of the carnival, which in turn supports many local charities and good causes.

One-day Writing Retreat with Claire Jefferies Vallis Farm, 27th September, 8.30am–7pm Writers are invited to step away from the distractions of everyday life and enjoy a peaceful, slow-paced day of creativity at Vallis Farm. Surrounded by nature, this one-day retreat offers the opportunity for complete creative immersion, with dedicated time to focus on a writing project before unwinding at the end of the day with a sauna and a swim in the farm’s outdoor natural pool.

Open to anyone who enjoys writing, regardless of experience or preferred genre, the retreat begins with a welcome gathering and a guided writing warm-up to help participants settle into the space. Throughout the day there will be plenty of time to write, alongside opportunities to connect with fellow writers. Guests will enjoy a homemade breakfast and lunch, healthy and indulgent snacks, and a selection of hot and cold drinks, all prepared by the host. The day concludes with an informal salon, offering the chance to share work, discuss writing challenges and exchange feedback in a relaxed and supportive setting.

The retreat is led by Frome-based writer Claire Jefferies, whose work includes stories about a delightful bear called Honey, as well as writing on food politics and food culture. As a member of the Vallis Farm team, Claire knows the venue well and offers participants a warm and welcoming environment in which to write.

Tickets cost £179, with just eight places available.

Frome Bridge Club Wesley Church, Frome Frome Bridge Club is a friendly and welcoming member of the English Bridge Union, offering beginner and intermediate bridge classes, starting in October 2026, alongside regular competitive play.

Open to people of all ages, the club combines social connection with mental stimulation. Bridge is more than simply a card game; it is widely recognised for improving memory, concentration and cognitive function, while helping players build lasting friendships in a relaxed and sociable environment.

» the list recommends « Rode Comedy Festival Pitch Perfect Camping, 26th - 30th August Rode Comedy Festival has become on of the bestknown dates in the comedy calendar, in just six years, since it first began. Now drawing some of the biggest names in comedy from around the country, the five day festival will be bigger and better than ever this year, with appearances from Katherine Ryan, Romesh Ranganathan, Lenny Henry, Jen Brister, Zoe Lyons and Tom Davis, to name just a few.

The Frome Society Heritage Trail The Frome Society’s popular Heritage Trail has been redesigned, expanded and completely updated.

The new 20-page guide features more than 50 photographs, many taken exclusively for this edition, together with a larger, easier-to-read map.

It tells the story of Frome in a concise and accessible format, making it the perfect companion for a day spent exploring the town.

Created for young adventurers and prehistoric explorers, this interactive event reveals how Stone Age people survived long before modern medicine, soap or doctors. Using herbs, fire, practical hygiene and a deep understanding of the natural world, early communities treated injuries, fought illness and protected one another. Through live demonstrations, engaging storytelling and hands-on activities, Stone Age SOS brings these forgotten survival skills vividly to life. Running daily throughout the school holidays, the event offers a packed programme of live talks and demonstrations exploring prehistoric medicine, hygiene and healing. Visitors can watch hunter-gatherers master the art of making fire at 11am and 2pm, discover how staying clean was essential for survival during Hunter Hygiene at 12pm and 3pm, and uncover the secrets of healing plants and ancient remedies at 1pm and 4pm.

Forest of Imagination The American Museum & Gardens 11th July – 1st September This summer, Forest of Imagination returns to the American Museum & Gardens with a series of inspiring outdoor art installations celebrating creativity, nature and play.

Among this year’s highlights is Dreamer by Andrew Grant, a spectacular 7.5-metre inflatable rabbit created with help from his children and brought to life by Designs in the Air. A much-loved icon of Forest of Imagination, Dreamer will be on display throughout the summer. Imaginal Soup, by Matthew Leece, explores the remarkable process of renewal and transformation inspired by the life cycle of a butterfly. Taking its name from the biological process in which imaginal cells contain the blueprint for what is yet to emerge, the installation invites visitors to reflect on change and new beginnings. Also featured is The Waters Way, created by Berlin-based American artist Andrew Amondson. Shimmering ribbons of blue and white fabric trace the hidden course of an ancient stream flowing beneath the American Museum & Gardens, inviting visitors to walk beneath its rolling waves and experience the landscape from a different perspective. Meanwhile, Chrysalis Grove,

by Grant Associates, features oversized chrysalises suspended amongst the trees of the arboretum, celebrating transformation, renewal and emergence while encouraging visitors to pause and reflect on the possibilities of change.

On Sunday 26th July, artists from the Forest of Imagination team will lead a programme of creative, hands-on workshops inspired by the installations and the museum’s beautiful surroundings. Suitable for all ages, the activities are designed to spark imagination, creativity and exploration.

Drawn to Trees: tree trail and Tree Zodiac exhibition

Daily until 6 September, 10am – 4pm Long summer days call for outdoor adventures, and Stourhead’s Summer of Play is here to help families make the most of them. Spanning the Stableyard and Summer of Play meadow, this year’s programme invites children to climb, build, balance, create and explore, with a variety of activities encouraging play and imagination. Expert circus performers from BigTopMania and friends will be sharing their skills every weekend in August.

Open daily, 9.30am – 4.30pm Stourhead’s trees have inspired generations of visitors and this summer they take centre stage in a new collaboration with acclaimed artist Luke Adam Hawker. The Drawn to Trees trail invites visitors to explore the stories, folklore and character of 17 significant trees across the landscape garden.

Alongside the trail, a striking open-air exhibition showcases Hawker’s Tree Zodiac etchings, inspired by the ancient Celtic Tree Zodiac. Together, the installations offer a fresh perspective on the landscapes that make Stourhead so special, blending art, nature and storytelling in a way that encourages visitors to slow down, look up and reconnect with the natural world.

Whether you’re an art lover, a nature enthusiast or simply seeking a peaceful stroll, Drawn to Trees offers a thoughtful new way to experience the garden. The tree trail costs £2 and can be purchased from visitor reception.

Outdoor Theatre As the sun sets across the landscape garden, Stourhead becomes an idyllic setting for outdoor theatre. Pack a picnic, bring a blanket and settle in for an evening of entertainment surrounded by beautiful scenery. On Sunday 2nd August, families can enjoy The Sword in the Stone, a magical retelling of the classic tale brought to life by Cambridge Touring Productions. Before the performance, younger visitors can even join a special theatre workshop to learn songs, meet the characters and become part of the adventure.

On Wednesday 12th August, The Three Inch Fools arrive with King Arthur and the Holy Fail, a gloriously comic take on Arthurian legend filled with music, mayhem and medieval mishaps.

The Secret Lives of Paintings Open daily, 11am – 4pm Beyond the garden lies Stourhead house, an elegant 18th-century Palladian mansion filled with treasures collected by generations of the Hoare family. This summer, visitors can delve deeper into one of its most intriguing exhibitions: The Secret Lives of Paintings.

The exhibition encourages you to question what you see and discover the hidden stories behind centuries-old works of art.

A particular highlight is Stourhead in its Infancy, long thought to be the earliest painting of the estate.

Following conservation work, new discoveries have transformed our understanding of both the painting and the history it depicts. Visitors can follow the detective story behind this remarkable artwork and explore the revelations uncovered by conservators working behind the scenes.

Summer at Communa

A place for meeting, eating and music

I

f you haven’t made it down to Communa yet, this summer is the perfect time to discover what’s taking shape in the heart of Frome.

While the wider building continues to be restored and developed over the coming months, the Communa Summer Terrace is now open, offering a relaxed programme of great food, independent drinks, live music and community events throughout the summer.

Food and music are at the heart of the programme, with a different rhythm each night.

Every Friday, Doubles from Melksham take over with Pizza & Vinyl, serving up wood-fired pizza alongside natural wine and vinyl DJ sets from Love Sun Days Collective. From 1st August, Saturdays become home to Milk Bun UK, bringing their muchloved gourmet burgers from Bristol to Frome.

On Sundays, Bita’s Persian Grill serves Persian grilled meat and vegetables, fresh salads and flatbreads with live jazz on the terrace to round off the weekend.

For now, though, the terrace is all about making the most of the summer - good food, good drinks and a place to spend time with friends, meet new people and enjoy everything from live music to special collaborations.

Creative Classes for All Ages From Alizarin Studio

P

olly Alizarin Harvey is an illustrator and surface designer based in a small Somerset

village, where she creates distinctive designs using individually drawn paper elements that are carefully collaged together. Her work celebrates everyday traditions, transforming the familiar into something extraordinary through bold use of colour, texture and pattern.

Alongside her creative practice, Polly has more than 14 years’ experience teaching at degree and MA level, as well as leading private art courses for children. Through Alizarin Studio, she offers playful, personalised tuition for artists of all ages, encouraging creativity, confidence and the development of individual artistic styles.

This autumn, Polly is launching a new programme of art classes for both adults and children from her welcoming home studio in Upton Noble. Class sizes are deliberately kept small, allowing every student to receive individual guidance and progress at their own pace within a relaxed, supportive and inspiring environment. One-to-one tuition is also available for those seeking tailored support, whether developing a personal creative practice, preparing a portfolio for further study, or receiving professional portfolio feedback.

arden designer Polly Coupland has spent the past fifteen years building strong relationships with local landscapers, gardeners, suppliers and specialist contractors. She works closely with homeowners, taking a practical, collaborative and thorough approach from the initial consultation and design through to overseeing the build and completing the final planting.

Inspired by nature, Polly creates thoughtful, beautiful and immersive gardens that feel connected to their surroundings. Every project is tailored to the individual, combining carefully considered planting with natural landscaping materials to create spaces that are both functional and timeless.
