YOU CAN’T REPLACE FACE TO FACE
Like many of you, I’ve spent time learning about the rise of artificial intelligence. I’ve attended workshops, sat through seminars, and even pay for my own subscription. There’s no question: we’re standing at the very tip of the AI iceberg.
It seems that for nearly as long as I can remember, we’ve operated under the shadow of worrying about much of the human elements of our business being replaced by technology. But alas, we’re all still here, and you could argue, we’re all doing just fine.
Across the five different industries I’ve worked in, I can confidently say that the Gift and Home industry is easily the most relationship-oriented of them all. For so many of us, that is a major part of the initial attraction of this business. Technology surely has it’s benefits quickly texting an image or an idea of a product that a client told you they were looking for, or being able to email an incentive on something relevant to them is helpful. These tools make us faster, more efficient, and more connected.
But they do not replace the face-to-face magic
Whether it’s a cramped office beside the stockroom, the sales floor during a busy Saturday event, or the organized chaos of a market showroom, those are the moments where orders are written and genuine relationships are built. That connection is the foundation of everything we do.
I realize that what I am describing isn’t anything new. But thinking back to the Hurricane Helene cleanup and when I heard the excitement before, and the joy afterward, from our showroom and operations team who chose to volunteer alongside competitors and suppliers to help rebuild stores of customers we all battle for, it caused me to realize, once again, just how special this business really is.
We know this truth instinctively: technology can support our work, but it will never replace the heart of it It can’t show up with work gloves and a hammer It can’t share a laugh in the back office It can’t build trust, friendship, or loyalty
Only people can do that. And that is something worth celebrating.

Dogwood Darlings: A Rebuild from the Heart
Dogwood Darlings opened its doors in Asheville, North Carolina, in March of 2020 with a great grand opening weekend, followed by a global shutdown just days later “We were open Saturday and Sunday,” recalls owner Kelly Schill “And by Monday, the country closed.”
Despite the challenging start, the boutique built a loyal following in the years that followed, offering carefully curated clothing, toys, and gifts for children But in September 2024, Hurricane Helene brought another major setback.
“On September 27, 2024, the entire village we’re standing in was underwater,” Kelly said “The water rose to the middle of the store Our entire first floor was completely submerged, almost to the second floor.”
Thankfully, they were able to move most of their inventory to the second floor the night before “We saved a good portion of our inventory, which was a blessing But Asheville was destroyed no power, no water, roads and bridges were wiped out. There was no way to operate.”
The damage hit just as the boutique was entering its busiest season “It was devastating,” Kelly said “Our fourth quarter is everything”
But in true small business fashion, she pivoted fast. “We had product and determination so we got creative In early November, we opened a second store in Greenville, South Carolina, about an hour and a half away It wasn’t part of the plan, but it gave us a path forward and let us keep going through the holidays.”
Still, the Asheville community rallied “Our local customers have been incredible,” she said “Even

though we’re an hour and a half away now, they kept shopping online and placing orders for home delivery. The Biltmore Village community has been so supportive.”
That same spirit of support is what brought the Independent Rebuild Project to Dogwood Darlings in the late summer of 2025. A hands-on initiative launched by Heart on Main Street, the project united volunteers from across the gift industry including members of The Link Companies to help small businesses recover and reopen after natural disasters
Over three days, volunteers focused on improving curb appeal and restoring functionality to the boutique’s upstairs space Tasks included outdoor clean-up, repainting the second floor, and reorganizing merchandise. The severely damaged first floor was undergoing repairs by professional contractors, but the Independent Rebuild team helped accelerate the journey back to business
Kelly admits she didn’t know what to expect. “I applied for every grant I could. I got the letter [from Heart on Main Street] saying we didn’t get the grant, but that they were coming I didn’t really know what that meant” She pauses “I didn’t kn these people before this week. T have to come, but they did. And amazing. You chose us and belie a time when I didn’t It’s been a year, and this gives us a huge pu back”

Q: You’ve written and spoken often about the importance of belonging in an organization. What does that mean for leaders, and why does it matter so much?
A: The job of the leader is to create a sense of belonging That’s what everyone wants In true blind studies, money ranks sixth in what people want from a job belonging ranks number one. When you do that, you attract and retain the right team, and that naturally leads to serving your clients better If client success is the center, you build the kind of culture that fulfills your mission through your people
Q: What are some practical ways to create that sense of belonging at work?
A: You’ve got to have an intentional leader who gives the team permission to help create
culture. If people think “the leader creates culture and I just consume it,” it never happens. Ownership comes when everyone views culture as something cultivated daily
I love that word cultivate I’m a city guy from South Florida, but even I picture a field: there’s sun and rain you can’t control, but your job is to plow, plant, and pull weeds every day That’s how you grow something fruitful for others Everyone should have their hands on the plow, helping to create the environment they want to be part of.
Q: How do you make sure everyone’s voice is actually heard in that kind of culture?
A: We do quarterly Gallup surveys across our entire organization about 950 people now and it’s completely anonymous. I literally read every single word. I tell our team, “Four times a year, you get 15 minutes to tell me what’s working and what’s not,” and I’ll spend hours reading every word Last quarter, 66% took
the survey better than last year, but still room to grow We celebrate participation; what gets celebrated gets reproduced I thank them publicly, reference their feedback in meetings, and make sure they see it influence decisions. That creates a feedback loop where people know their voice matters
Q: What if someone has a smaller team— say, six or ten people — how can they still initiate a survey?
A: Even with a small team, start doing anonymous surveys A survey communicates, I want to hear from you Sure, you can just ask in person, but people don’t always tell you everything face-to-face. The purpose isn’t just feedback it’s building a culture that says, “I care. I hear you. I want to grow.”
Q: Many small business owners are feeling exhausted after tough years. What advice would you give about leading through uncertainty?
A: We’re always living in uncertain times some seasons just make that clearer Two words I focus on are grit and hope Grit is perseverance over time; hope is believing in a better future. We need both. Challenges are like lifting heavier weights they build strength and character. You might not enjoy it in the moment, but it refines you and your organization Bring on the challenge with hope it’s ultimately for the greater good
Q: You often talk about the importance of standing out in an attention-driven world. What mindset should independent retailers adopt when they’re thinking about customer experience and inspiration?
A: We live in an attention economy, so you’ve got to be remarkable. I would challenge them to look outside of their industry for inspiration. We all live in our own fishbowl our company, our industry and we start to believe that the little world we swim in is the whole world But it’s not. The real world exists outside that

bowl. You can’t see your own bowl clearly until you step outside of it or invite others to help you see it So, for example, I don’t index myself to the school fundraising industry they’re not who I want to emulate I index
myself to Chick-fil-A or Ritz-Carlton for customer service, to Apple for product excellence, or to the Savannah Bananas for creating unforgettable fan experiences So don’t just try to have a brighter sign than the store next to you think outside the fishbowl.
Q: Finally, how can entrepreneurs foster community around them, both in business and personally?
A: Whatever your personality, be the initiator. Don’t wait to be invited start something. A group text, a coffee meet-up, a book club, a local networking night Entrepreneurs are wired to take risks and start things that’s a gift. Use it to build community, invite others in, and enrich lives beyond your own. That’s what leadership is all about.
