I dedicate this success to her Nuñez shared Like Togonon the former EIC recalls the challenges she has faced specially belonging in the batch pioneering the K-12 curriculum She also gave some encouraging words to her juniors who aspire to become RNs in the future She advised, “You'll get lost a lot, youll cry a lot, youll even think of giving up and questioning yourself but always remind yourself that during those times when you feel already defeated you've come this far and you did not just come this far for nothing For sure, you have your purpose ” She ends by giving special thanks to her SNAMS family, parents and friends for being with her on her very important journey

400 per kilo Sugar is as high as Php 110 per kilo Chicken ranges from Php 190 to 200 in Metro Manila Pork is reported by the Department of Agriculture to be around Php 270 to 390 Vegetables are also up by at least Php 20 and as much as Php 60 per kilo Almost everything in the market has become expensive following the booming inflation rate in the country Inflation in the Philippines has made decent living a privilege favoring the rich and further thwarting the poor

In October 2022 the Philippines recorded a soaring 7 7% inflation rate It was the highest known inflation rate since October of 2008 This figure surged above expectations from a previous record of 6 9% in September of the same year Just when everybody thought this peak was already ridiculous, November 2022 comes with a banging 8 0% inflation rate surpassing the 14-year high record in October 2022 The catch is that the inflation rate is not likely to decrease but experts even project a further upward trend especially after the country faced consecutive typhoons this year damaging millions-worth of pro-

ted increase in the prices of goods this holiday season

While the upper classes might not really feel its toll, high inflation in the country burdens millions of Filipino families who were not privileged enough to be on top of the social hierarchy With the skyrocketing prices of nearly everything in the market, below livable wages of Filipino workers, unemployment of millions and not to forget the still ongoing health crisis, truly, living has become so expensive and problematic especially for those in poverty those that barely made it through the day before, those that earn below the minimum wage, those that have irregular jobs and those that cannot even afford to live under a roof

If the high inflation rate in the country continues to persist, or worse, even increase, without government mediation, it is with no question that more and more Filipinos will be hungry because they could no longer put food on their table More and more children will be malnourished because they first have to think of their survival before their health Overworked and underpaid minimum wage earners

The crucial 5 seconds of life

Often we count at least 3 seconds when we take pictures of someone as a signal that we will press the shutter button or maybe you have heard it from the director before he calls for Action when it is ready to start a scene But no matter how many seconds we use in any circumstance the time before the second ends is crucial as it can change our point of view, behavior or even our life

The 5-second rule was introduced by Mel Robbins during her TEDx talk back in 2013 Since then, it has gained popularity and has led to the publication of a book that has sold 2 million copies across numerous nations It is surprising and intriguing that this simple rule was able to reach and change many lives According to Mel Robbins “The 5 Second Rule is simple If you have an instinct to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds, or your brain will kill it The moment you feel an instinct or a desire to act on a goal or a commitment, use the Rule When you feel yourself hesitate before doing something that you know you should do, count 5-4-3-2-1-GO and move towards action ”

hey

work all days they still have too little to provide for their needs Workers may be pushed to fly overseas seeking for better opportunities because they got mouths to feed and bills to pay things they could no longer do if they stay in the struggling country The rights and needs of Filipinos will eventually turn into luxuries that only a few can afford if the government continues to be silent and indifferent about the clamor for action of the Filipino masses

Exhausting all possible means and powers vested upon the government actions must be taken not only to address the super inflation but also to trace and solve the root causes of this problem For inflation to be managed, the government must look into addressing the rising fuel prices strengthening Philippine agriculture to ensure food security and regulating the prices of commodities in the market If the government fails in this premise whether by intention, lack of action or simply expected incompetence Filipino families will continue to drown in inflation in the coming more years of the current administration

This rule’s main objective is to disrupt our thought patterns when deciding When we consider the tasks that we must complete, we frequently find ourselves in a predicament that either makes us feel overwhelmed or lazy, leading us to find justification for delaying this task The struggle must be real, but one aspect of this rule s strength is that it can be used in a variety of reallife circumstances It can be used as a countdown method to break any bad habit stop negative criticisms and self-doubt, and encourage yourself to take actions that will change your life The latter appears to be crucial in the application of this rule as we deal with the rampant social issue in our society mental health stigma

The latter appears to be crucial in the application of this rule as we deal with the rampant social issue in our society mental health stigma

Since the very start of the pandemic, aside from the threat to our bodies it amplified much more serious mental health problems that become a breeding ground for an attack on our minds Many people especially the youth are dealing with mental health problems that made them feel lonely, sad, afraid, stressed, and depressed due to many complex reasons According to the 2021 Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study (YAFSS) one in five Filipino youth aged 15-24 has ever considered ending their life In 2021, the percentage ever tried to commit suicide, drastically increased to 7 5% equivalent to almost 1 5 million youth with such experience, compared to 2013 findings of 3% or approximately 574 000 These statistics are beyond just numbers These are family members, neighbors friends classmates or even people closest

It is not a Pie

In light of the proposed SOGIE Equality Bill House Bill 5717 or Heterosexual Act of 2022 was recently filed in order to “safeguard” the rights of heterosexual individuals to express and impose their religious views and beliefs However, more than a bill aiming to protect heterosexuals this bill, yet again, seems more to be another disguise to warrant oppression against the LGBTQIA+ community

Rep Benny Abante stated that the passing of the Heterosexual Act as a law is anchored in “the spirit of justice, equity and fair play,” as a response to SOGIE Equality Bill which seeks to cater the rights and protection of LGBTQIA+ against harassment and discrimination, to which Rep Abante had consistently expressed opposition for the reason that the bill promote and give rewards to ‘genders’ not created by God ”

If Rep Abante s aim is just to truly protect the right of heterosexuals, he should have known that the SOGIE Bill encompasses every sexual orientation, gender expression and identity including heterosexuality However, his reasons for opposing SOGIE and the creation of House Bill 5717 says otherwise It is just a show of bigotry An act that shall enable hatred and prejudice against the LGBTQIA+ masked under the veil of law

Under the filed House Bill 5717, it was also stated that heterosexuals should be given the right to freely practice, proclaim, and defend their religious beliefs without interference, and impose the said views in running or operating churches, businesses, schools or workplaces Then again is there really a need for it when these very rights pushed by its author are already enjoyed by straight men and women since time immemorial? Heterosexuals already live with the privilege to freely express their beliefs views and identity for these are the norms deemed acceptable by society and religion Is this not just a safeguard to continuously weaponize religious beliefs against the LGBTQIA+ especially when religious heterosexuals are often the enablers of homophobia against the community?

Fighting for rights is not fighting for a part inside a pie.

Fighting for rights is not fighting for a part inside a pie The continuous battle for the passing of SOGIE Equality Bill does not take nor trample on the rights of heterosexuals If any, it also condemns acts of discrimination towards heterosexuality Hence the proposed Heterosexual Act is completely uncalled-for, and is just a waste of time energy and resources which could be channeled to more pressing concerns in the country

to you Sometimes, it can even be ourselves This brings us back to the second paragraph: a 5-second rule that can make a change

Next time before we tend to discriminate, behave negatively or even say anything like Ang drama mo naman” or “Iniisip mo lang yan” that might imply a negative impact to someone who rants and may be dealing with a mental health problem we try to count to 5 pause and refrain from saying any derogatory remarks Everyone has problems in life Often, we claim to have known the whole story when in fact we are only aware of the tip of an iceberg Mental health illness is a serious problem that when left untreated can lead to adverse effects Seeking professional help is most often looked down upon or even the mere act of talking about it is seen a taboo Given that, indeed, there’s still much more work to be done As individuals the least thing we can do is to be kind, understanding, and supportive of one another It's a rule that doesn’t cost anything and you won t even have to spend a nanosecond to do so

First blood is a mouth shut

Democracy died when one mouth was forced shut January 17, 1981, the Philippines regained the democracy that was trampled by the dictatorship of the senior Marcos for several years After a people s revolution, the tyrant’s reign ended and Martial law was officially lifted The freedom that was fought for rosaries against canyons, by the people in the renowned EDSA people power revolution is now again under arrest and it has been that way before Filipinos could even take courage to admit it

For years, blinded by the macho facade of the former president Rodrigo Duterte, millions of Filipinos have supported him reflecting not only on the votes he garnered during the elections but also on his consistent peaking approval rates recorded to be even the highest in Philippine history Behind this iron fist, talk-only president are countless atrocities and a what seems to

Oh nurses, the places you can’t go!

There are about 910 000 Filipino registered nurses around the world today, with about 310,000 of them opting to leave the country to seek career opportunities overseas The healthcare setting in the Philippines imposes a rigorous work environment for nurses especially those working at public hospitals With the piling and strenuous responsibilities of the country’s professional nurses you’d expect benefits and wages that could at least compensate for the amount of effort that these overworked individuals put in for the welfare of their patients However that is not the case now nor has it ever been The average salary for a registered nurse in the Philippines is around twenty thousand pesos, an amount that could even go lower depending on the sector you are working in To add to that, overtime and hazard paychecks are yet to be standardized for nurses The tumultuous working conditions paired with the unreasonable earnings are among, if not the main reason itself why more Filipino nurses are found in foreign countries than within their respective hometowns and country

So, what do the higher-ups do about this imminent brain drain and mistreatment?

Something between worse and none

Last August 11, 2022, in one of Malacañang Palace's statements during a meeting with the members of the Private Sector Advisory Council, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr showed support for a proposed ladderized scholarship program for nurses The proposal entails that people who were able to

be addiction to violence and killings During his time political activists, human rights and environment defenders critics and journalists became targets of his government s murderous intent Activists were dismissed violently Protests were visited by armed men-in-uniform who like their commander-in-chief, seemed to know nothing but use power to abuse, impose fear and cause harm Defenders were threatened and killed, starting off with series of death threats that later on resulted in the same fate death

Critics were put to prison for unjustified crimes that until now are unresolved Supposed witnesses and evidences were paid for and fabricated for made-up cases only to silence real whistleblowers and critics who do their best to dig on the crooked Duterte system Journalists were put to prison and labeled libelous for speaking truth against the atrocities of the foul-mouthed president This is in addition to threats and intimidation and even killings of other members of the press after their attempts to expose the bloody and corrupted Duterte government

Since this time democracy was dead What people stood for once was dead before our very own eyes with some not even acknowledging it at all When the first activist died, democracy died too When defenders were killed and abused almost consecutively in different regions, democracy fell apart When journalists were put to prison and prohibited from speaking against the government that is the time freedom began to be under grave threat When criminals were extrajudicially punished and innocent groups were red-tagged, freedom became but an imagination and democracy an illusion It took

avail of this academic scholarship must then offer their service first in the Philippines for at least two years, before enabling them to have the option to transfer overseas According to the said statement during the meeting Marcos expressed support for this idea and proceeded to say, “They (Filipino nurses) are so good everybody wants them and they are willing to pay for it, and we are not, or we re not able So, we have to come up with strategies for that ” Though scholarships and opportunities for free education surely must be promoted, I do have reservations with such a view and found two major flaws in this statement from the President

First can’t Philippine officials really afford to decree these nurses a higher pay, or do they just choose not to? Marcos Jr ’s predecessor former president Rodrigo R Duterte, made decisions that surely do not align with such a statement In 2018, he signed into law the Congress Joint Resolution Briefly this law modifies and doubles the salaries and even base pay schedule for all military and uniformed personnel To give an idea of how this works, the resolution doubled the base pay of a Police Officer I in the Philippine National Police and its equivalent ranks of a Private in the Armed Forces of the Philippines together with other positions in the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, Philippine Coast Guard, and more These equal-ranking personnel will then have a 100% increase that resulted in them having a monthly base pay that totals to an amount of 26 668 pesos That was just the lower ranking personnel, according to the Department of Budget and Management lower ranking personnel will receive a total of 58 7% average increase in their base pay while higher ranking personnel will receive an average increase of 72 18% In 2021, in the Armed Forces of the Philippines alone already exists an estimated

Last December 2021, the name Mark Nagoyo became the most intriguing name as more than 700 clients of BDO lost their money unknowingly via unauthorized bank transfers from BDO to UnionBank In return the BDO reimbursed 700 clients who were victimized by the “sophisticated fraud technique” and implemented security measures to eliminate unauthorized digital bank transactions With this incident the harsh reality of online banking was exposed

Where there is money, there is crime

At present 1 in 2 Filipinos is utilizing mobile banking services as a new form of money transactions Especially with the COVID-19 set-up the marketing and business system adapted to the online world and embraced the concept of digitalization Internet and technology surely paved its way to the financial and marketing system as new applications called “E-wallets” and online banking systems were the hottest picks by consumers as new forms of payment systems Online banking is wireless quick and convenient since all payments will be done with just a tap However, amidst its popularity to the consumers, it also gives way for online scammers committing digital frauds and cybersecurity attacks

Fraud will always be the risk of digital banking It will never disappear since no E-wallet center and banking system can guarantee 100% safety and security of money against hackers and scammers As online fraud schemes have been accelerated across the country it became the biggest challenge for the Department of Justice – Office of Cybercrime (DOJOOC) to come up with a concrete plan in addressing fraud incidents

Digital banking imposes high vulnerability especially to people who are new in the set-up It allows cybercriminals to easily persuade new joiners, and eventually end up in their trap The digital payment system imposed exceedingly harmful threats which have caused to hit P1 billion loss last 2021 This year more and more users have reported being victims of these scams and fraud schemes What’s even more concerning is the capacity of a scammer to hold access to someone s account without notice The

hundreds of thousands to speak to gain democracy but only one to be silenced to lose it But we seem to never get enough of all the abuses we have had in the last six years as Filipinos elected once again the fleshand-bloods of the two worst oppressors in Philippine history Today, we have a Marcos and a Duterte as the president and the vice president by title Along with the reelection of their families in the country’s two highest government offices is a continuous and an even more serious threat not only to democracy but to every aspect of the country and its government In just a few months into position a journalist was shot dead not to mention that this broadcaster-journalist was a known Duterte and Marcos critic About a hundred farmers, land reform activists, students, and media workers were detained by force in Tarlac just this year The University of the Philippines, unreasonably tagged as cradle of activism which is unduly related by most to terrorism faced a budget cut also this year This deprives more students of free college education and the Philippine General Hospital of adequate financial support Red-tagging continued to become rampant in the current administration Students schools, organizations and groups who have been politically vocal were unjustly labeled as terrorists as

number of 143 100 uniformed personnel who all received such an increase in their salaries Now, I m not saying that these people do not deserve to get a taste of a salary increase for the service that they do for our country, I just think that it would have been a fairer approach to mandate a standard salary increase like this in other sectors of service too and not just within the military alone Such a budget to increase more than half of these personnel s salaries should have been equally distributed among all workers in the Philippines especially underpaid teachers and healthcare workers With all of these in mind, the question is yet again raised are they really not able to pay our nurses, or do they just choose not to?

Second is depriving Filipino nurses of the opportunity to seek a career option that would do justice for the amount of work and care that they give can be even considered a strategy to resolve this? And is it in any way at all a fair decision to make? The way I see it this is a selfish approach to the brain drain dilemma occurring Whatever choice they do end up making to address this must be decided in favor of the workers, and not of government sectors controlled by people unaffected by the circumstance they decide upon What we should be focusing on should not be the apparent leave of Filipino nurses but the roots of such a crucial decision Aside from the lack of livable and justifiable wages, an approach to address the preexisting “toxic” work environment is a good place to start Moreover, fostering healthy work environments (like what some people vie to experience overseas) that can be conducive to both professional and personal growth must also be considered Restricting options for nurses that will benefit from such a scholarship is an unsustainable solution to the matter at hand as it does not actually address the main grounds of brain drain and in proceeding with these

complexity and dynamics of these scams make it very difficult to trace and detect its origins since cybercriminals uses multiple accounts to launder money online

Even with the advancements of security and authentications, there are still limitations and breech of privacy as complex malware can disrupt authentications, leading to fraudulent activities Not only do these breeches and crimes prove how people are blinded by money but they also show how the justice system falls short regarding cybercrime cases

they can allegedly become a ‘public threat’ With the anti-terrorism law in action, indeed, the country has just continued to be more and more dangerous for people who attempt to speak up and voice out It has become a deadly place for defenders and activists and an unsafe space for journalism to thrive and opinions to be said It has become a land where critics have no place and the government must just be blindly followed or worse, praised for its nothingness The Philippines has transformed into becoming a country where liars, fake news peddlers, enablers and trolls are given such a wide platform to misinform and fool people while those that advocate for truth, transparency and justice are limited and silenced Now it leads me to ask is this the Philippines that we wanted? Is this the same Philippines that the Filipinos defended for the longest time that goes down on history books and records? Haven t we had enough for the last six years that we enable another six of oppression and incompetence? The Philippines deserves better Our hard-earned democracy deserves better We need more than just a Duterte out of the government We need more than just a Marcos out of power We need Filipinos who commit themselves to preserving democracy not just for today but for the generations of Filipinos to come If we cannot even speak the truth and oppose the government today, what, in the coming more years, can happen? What, in the next few years of the current administration can we even do to protect our rights and our freedom? Or the more important question is would the Filipinos still have the freedom?

only by the

but also by the developers of Ewallets and online banking companies There is an urgent need to tighten security and authentication practices Consumers need to be warier of their interactions online From clicking on an unknown link visiting a website or filling out personal information, consumers must be careful because activities as simple as this can be used by criminals to their advantage

The Philippines must really address the numerous issues concerning its healthcare sector sooner rather than later This under-compensation does not only affect nurses but all the skilled and licensed professionals offering their devotion and service to patient care in the country It’s about time that we attend to the heeds of Filipino nurses without villainizing them for opting to leave the motherland at a chance for a better life than what is being served to them here today Gone must be the days when healthcare workers should deal with the push and pull of their roles and the system and as they wield the caduceus under their wing, they should have long secured a spot beyond being undervalued

Online banking scams and frauds are also a challenge for developers and the government to devise on ways to eliminate or at least lessen these unprovoked attacks But until such plan comes to life, I encourage everyone especially who utilize online payment system, to be vigilant, discerning, and to scrutinize transactions that are made online

Under Bethlehem's Star

With the year nearing its end, have you ever wondered what the telltales marking the start of the long-awaited Yuletide are? Of all countries known for the marvelous showcasing of traditions of the said occasion it can be perfectly said that the Philippines will not let itself lose on holidays as with traditions as grandeur as this! Having the longest and merriest months of Yule these are just what you may encounter when you get to celebrate these wondrous moments in the country As the northeast monsoons cold breeze hit senses left and right as early as September 1st, hymns of the ever-famous Filipino Christmas figure, Jose Mari Chan can be heard in whichever streets and houses your feet may have gone into that even the mere word “Whenever” will remind you of the feast of the Nativity of Christ on a year-end On top of that, remember the natural alarm of roosters? They are now replaced by the blasting volumes of beloved Filipino Christmas songs such as “Ang Pasko ay Sumapit, Pasko na naman, Star ng Pasko” and of course, you can’t miss Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” as early as 7 AM from your neighbor s huge ground-shaking speaker to wake your morning up good

At this point days will also be numbered in utmost anticipation Unless this is your ninong and ‘ninang’ we are talking about, who goes missing in action as the date draws near even in the prior years of the season that mayhap is a different story to tell Yet anyhow, some surprisingly appear waving those sought-after new crisp bills of 20s 50s and 100s of cash inside a red envelope with intricates of gold called Ampao To others, grandparents will come to the rescue who’d be offering ones that are yellow or blue in color ones that will surely make a child’s Christmas merry

Further households are decorated with

week of January All of which are very much highlighted on a dark and chilly Christmas night Bright-colored, gigantic, and iconic star lanterns also float across roads and bridges These so-called lanterns symbolize the guiding light for the Three Kings to find Jesus The Christmas Capital of the Philippines, the City of San Fernando, Pampanga is absolutely renowned for crafting the brightest and biggest lanterns every Christmas season

Being a Catholic nation, Simbang Gabi is a tradition where Filipino people wake up as the dawn breaks into the horizon It is a nine-day mass that Filipinos adhere to in devotion to the Divinity as well as in preparation for the feast of the Savior’s birth Christmas is also the season of peaking prices of everything Yet, hams in supermarkets are mostly sold-out Food promo packages of Filipino-style spaghetti sauce, pasta, macaroni, and fruit salad are off the racks too Filipino tables will surely be loaded with meals prepared with fineness and familiarity come what may Lechon kawali, spaghetti, meat barbecues, grilled hotdogs, menudo, Christmas ham, leche flan you name it and it is probably there on a typical Noche Buena table But the popularity of the heavenly-flavored rice cake baked out of galapong (rice dough) with cheese salted egg and butter seasoned atop called bibingka never withers Another is the exquisite taste of puto bumbong made from deep purple-colored pirurutong (sticky rice) cooked in a traditional bamboo steamer, usually served with margarine, brown sugar, and grated coconut Perhaps all these are what set our tradition apart from the rest of the nations celebrating Christmas Seeing these signs come to life after several months of waiting for the most joyous season of the year is surely heartwarming and exciting This is what paskong Pinoy is all about It is the culture, the food, the family all enjoined together for a celebration of faith and a welcoming of salvation

An An Aggressive Aggressive Call for Social Call for Social Justice Justice

surely crossed your social media timeline You sure have encountered the cancelling of Toni Gonzaga after her support to the then presidential candidate Marcos Jr

With everyone spending most of their days on social media especially now more than ever various trends start to boom out of nowhere and unfortunately cancel culture has been one of those Social media has become one if not the most utilized medium of expression It is such a convenient platform to exercise one’s right to free speech Although it has appealingly immense benefits such as giving voices to less powerful people, it has also been one of the major platforms for debates, bashing, and criticism, and most of the time, this gets out of hand leading to personalities getting “#cancelledt”

The term “cancel culture” is the removal or “canceling” of a person brand product company or anyone due to a statement, action, or event that the public disagrees with or finds inappropriate It breaks the support from the people, labeling the individual as “bad” without any redemption Who could forget about the time when Marcus Adoro, Eraserheads’ band member got cancelled because of alleged domestic abuse? You might have heard of Donnalyn Bartolome s controversial birthday shoot which was called out because it sexualized babies

Ella Cruz’ “history is like chismis” remark

All these cancelling events of public personalities happened after they were called out on various social media platforms While the reason for their cancellation may be intended for the good as generally, netizens were speaking up against injustices and social issues, the fact that these personalities received below-the-belt and aggressive attacks cannot be ignored Now, it leads us to question, is cancel culture really acceptable? Does the good intention of advocating for civil rights and bringing about justice justify the aggressive and insulting attacks to personalities whose rights also include free speech?

The cancel culture at some point is helpful as it urges people to be accountable for statements and actions that are socially unjust discriminatory or derogatory With a lot of people caring on their image and on public influence or support surely faced with criticisms and backlash, they reevaluate their choices of words and actions and as predicted most would just apologize and be careful on what they talk about especially given the massive following and influence they hold It is empowering because the public has the opportunity to speak out and unknowingly, uniting also because people of same beliefs and views, exchange ideas and form understanding On the opposite side of the coin, victims of cancel culture are catch basins of hate, derogatory remarks, insulting comments and a lot of below-the-belt attacks

All of which are toxic and emotionally offensive Some netizens, though with good intentions, go beyond acceptable means to call out people at fault Without thinking much, they threaten people, unwarrantly include their families in their attacks

result to ad hominem and curse inappropriately Others would go to as far as ill-wishing them or even giving death threats and death wishes The cancel culture can also be a modern way of bullying which instigates violence anxiety and trauma It invites foul-mouthed social media users who sometimes have no intention to fight for what is right but just chime in to the issue just to unsolicitedly participate in public shame, negativity, and cyberbullying It creates a “Mob mentality where people try to fit into the group by adopting the majority’s views and behaviors

Furthermore, cancel culture creates a barrier for some people, in terms of sharing their views and opinions or writing what is on their mind in the public media as they fear being “cancelled” This is where free speech begins to be trampled

In a contemporary society where grave issues such as historical distortion, domestic abuse, sexualization gender inequality and misinformation widely thrive, it is an urgent need for us to call out and withdraw support from enablers and supporters of such heinous crimes In doing such there is no need to resort to violence aggression, insults and bullying While social media can be liberating and effective in fighting

When you read the word drag, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Perhaps you’d think of harsh contour makeup that beats theaterappropriate looks or eye-catching costumes, but in reality, drag is more than just heavy blush and dressing up

Drag is an art form that plays around with exaggerated clothing meant to represent and portray the opposite sex The quintessential imagery ingrained in people’s minds when they come across the term would be, without a doubt, drag queens Drag queens are men dressed as exaggerated presentations of a woman through extreme clothing and makeup Though less recognized in pop culture, drag kings are also a thing On the other hand these are women dressed as exaggerated presentations of a man. Though it must be noted that performing drag is not confined to the corners of one’s sex and gender identity There are no such limits that only people who identify as men can be drag queens nor only people who identify as a woman can be drag kings While drag s creation was mainly rooted in the sake of entertainment, it now transcends just that, and today, it serves as an outlet for self-expression and is now widely known as a way to celebrate LGBTQ+ pride

Though, it must be duly remembered that doing drag does not equate to being transsexual The automatic response of people, usually older individuals, when seeing men dressed as women would be something along the lines of “bading,” as if it's some sort of an insult A drag queen’s gender is not directly tied to whatever drag per-

sona they portray Whatever characteristics they emulate as a character from the opposite sex are separated from who they actually are unless they stated otherwise It must be understood that the essence of drag lies in the rejection of commonplace ideas surrounding gender both woman- and manhood

The art of drag has a long-running history, its earliest roots dating back as early as stage plays in ancient Greece as a fruit of women’s repressive circumstances in the older times Since women were not allowed to do almost anything, including participation in the performing arts, men used to impersonate women for female roles

However, in the 21st century, the art of drag has crossed the walls of theatrical plays and has made its way into mainstream media mainly through recognition from the Western show, RuPaul’s Drag Race The show revolves around the skill that goes into drag as contes-

Maling room pala at nasa room 206 ako.

As a nursing student, grabe yung pagod din pag nasa duty.

In our OB ward rotation, we used to assess pregnant women Then there was a time when I was assigned to assess high-risk patients, and I asked my 69-year-oldpatient whether she hadjust delivered her first child Then I realized that she cannot longer have a baby because she is already 69 years old

We celebrated my friend's birthday the day before my return demonstration We drank and were inebriated. I didn't fully prepare for my Intramuscular Injection return demonstration today, so I just watched a video on YouTube to learn how to do it and performed the demonstration while going to school this morning I still feel lightheaded and hangover My hand was shaking as I prepared to pierce my partner's arm, and I was nervous as I did it Until my classmate said "Aray" out of the blue I was so shocked. I was unaware that the injection had been stuck in her arm for a long time I believe that my classmate was traumatized at the moment Since then, I never drank again (only when I know I have RetDem in the next day)

you know Apple puts a secret 30% tax on everything you buy through their App Store?", he shared on Twitter This tweet came

before is also all over Twitter The

started in April 2022 and concluded on October 27 2022 It was shown that he began buying shares of Twitter Inc by January 2022 and became

To add, the idea of Musk buying the app despite the fact that he has publicly criticized its

stakeholder with 9 1 percent ownership With this said, massive tweets from different accounts inside the app came up with

opinions Twitter doesn’t seem that important anymore Thanks @elonmusk Maybe that was your point in buying this Or that was an unintentional side effect But Twitter isn’t really as important or special as we make it out to be The world would be just fine without it. Maybe better," a netizen tweeted

Aside from his preceding infamous reputation on Twitter, the entrepreneur has been under more fire than ever in the recent weeks especially after fully acquiring the company If you were anywhere near Twitter during this time you might have seen the number of verified accounts double- even triple in about a day This is because of the new Twitter Blue feature, a monthly $4.99 to $7.99 subscription that aside from its many other features, lets you have your very own verification tag on your profile perhaps as a superficial symbol of relevance or whatever validation it is that people associate with a verified Twitter account Though not long after, many people raised their concerns about this Since just about anyone can now acquire a verification tag, the very essence of verification basically was lost Lots of Twitter users voiced their concern about this move by Musk labeling it as another scheming billionaire move to lure people into spending more money to feed his wealth

A social media status to boast, of course, is quite hard to resist for some people, which resulted in many blue check accounts in such a short span of time But then since this garnered more criticism than it did support Twitter tried to tweak the Twitter Blue features to somehow salvage it where now you can check what type of verification an account has by clicking on the tag and seeing if it's from a Twitter Blue subscription or if the account is in fact a notable one to actually earn one Since the verification badge is no longer given after a tedious process of verification of the intent and people running an account the spread of misinformation is feared to grow even bigger To add more fuel to this fire, Musk also planned on reducing Twitter moderation, which people believe to be a step closer to a space that could potentially let hate speech proliferate more than it already does After his acquisition of the company Musk now has the power to push through his agendas of further diluting Twitter community guidelines in monitoring possible harmful and hateful content and eventually dissolving the Twitter censorship that he openly criticized in his Tweets in the past

Additionally it was also only very recently that countless Twitter users have expressed their distress over the possibility of Twitter collapsing Many have opted to provide “refuge” accounts, ranging from apps like Instagram to Tumblr, as a way to continue connecting with their online mutuals even after the possible fall of Twitter The rumor started after the staffing problems in the Twitter HQ as more and more engineers and staff are opting to quit because of Musk’s rather controversial employee policies since taking over the company People concluded that because of this staffing crisis, Twitter would inevitably fall quite faster than anticipated because it is running out of people to subsist powering it

The fate of Twitter is still yet to be determined, and whether it be good or bad is unforeseeable With the rate that things are going as of the moment, things aren’t looking too pretty, both for the company and the users who have come to love the social media application and website The question still stands, though many are wondering for how long it would be how much time left does Twitter have to flap over the scene of modern information?

VOL 15 ISSUE 1 | JULY-NOV 2022
Elon Musk has been long known for his rather questionable tweets, aside from his already frowned upon pre-existing reputation His idea of his influence is backed up by several people including those who do not like him His tweets have always been directed at something or someone that he needed to call out or get attention from With the recent happenings in the Bluebird or bird app,” as people would refer to Twitter, different opinions and reactions to every tweet he produces have caused chaotic discussions among people who might be influencers or in the same line of work as him Tuesday, November 29, 2022, based on his tweets, as part of an evaluation process, Apple threatened to remove the Twitter app from the App Store Did together poll asking people management acquisition the company's largest overwhelming

DarLentina: An Unconventional Take on a Mars Ravelo Classic

Like an uncalled-for lightning on a bright, sunny day or a double yolk treat from a single cracked egg like a deer befriending a lion or a cat bonding with a mouse the DarLentina hype is probably one of the most unique yet satisfying oxymorons we have ever had in 2022

Who would have thought that two iconic characters known to be each other’s enemies would now be a sailing ship netizens can t help but adore? Who would have imagined that the villain and the hero would be paired up to form such a powerful tandem that everyone can’t get enough of?

While this is not the first time that Mars Ravelo’s classic Darna was made into a TV series it is definitely the first time to have Darna and Valentina linked together seen as friends and even viewed romantically by some audiences The 2022 ABSCBN’s Darna is surely a different one It gave a different flavor an innovative take on the story and a uniquely exceptional portrayal of the classic Filipino comics

Jane de Leon, now giving life to Narda Custodia aka Darna and Janella Salvador portraying Regina Vanguardia aka Valentina has unexpectedly captivated the hearts of their viewers with their onscreen friendship and sisterly bond Unlike the classic image of two fated rivals, the new series take on the two characters were a bit different but this creative twist became well-loved and widely talked about all over social media The pair got their audience gushing and spying over “crumbs” for each episode of Mars Ravelo’s: Darna dominating modern Philippine television

Whether the showrunners intended for Narda and Regina to be potentially queer or whether they simply decided to explore that facet of their dynamic after noticing the on-screen chemistry between actors Jane De Leon and Janella Salvador more and more viewers are shipping Narda and Regina together, and we certainly can't blame them Let’s take a look at why DarLentina might just be the Philippine television s newest sapphic superhero ship

Intertwined Origins

They have had an impact on each other’s lives since the very beginning Even before they had even met, they were each other's heroes In a scene set on a cliff Narda sensed that Regina was in a dark place

Other’s Safe Space

Regina Vanguardia uses her platform as a lawyer/vlogger to expose corrupt public servants She does battle for the cause of justice and truth; thus, she is not intrinsically wicked Even though pegged as a villain even in her antagonist skin Valentina

Both Wear Heroic Capes

Unquestionably, Narda is the ‘good guy’ playing the role of Darna the hero of Nueva Esperanza And with matters involving Regina, some may say that it must be exhausting always rooting for the antihero but

from viewers as her victims are antagonists ranging from a notorious criminal, a corrupt judge and a rapist

gain

JaneNella Approved!

More than the immense love and support that the ship has been getting from the persevering and dedicated fandom, what makes this love team recognizable and loved more than ever is that actresses Jane De Leon and Janella Salvador validate and acknowledge the existence of the ship

Both De Leon and Salvador consistently send their gratitude to their fans for their daily top-trend activity on Twitter, and their exceptional efforts to extend their love and support for the ship On a live twitter space with fans Salvador reassured Magka-away si Darna tsaka si Valentina So kahit anong mangyari, syempre, andyan naman ‘yung pagmamahal namin sa isa t isa

Whether bound to be together or break the hearts of the ships believers should they not be each other’s endgame it is unlikely that fans are able to resist DarLentina s onscreen chemistry Whatever the fate of Narda and Regina may be, it is safe to say that the trajectory of their relationship has the potential of changing the Filipino mainstream media forever Its about time that we see the main superhero teaming up with her foe in defending and conquering the depths of this villainous world It is the perfect time for love to mend what reflects to be cracks of observation of conservativeness and ultimately for DarLentina to explore the lines from enemies to lovers

Videos of people cutting soaps into tiny cubes, tapping on random items, or even slicing through a block of colorful sand have taken over the internet Such clips appear arbitrarily while scrolling through any social media platform or video-sharing applications such as TikTok If your eyes linger on these videos for longer than a minute, you may start noticing the little details embedded in the tiny frame of your phone screen Perhaps it would be a small logo on the corner of the uploaded video or a hashtag in the caption, but you’d probably see the letters ASMR altogether wondering what it is and how it’s even remotely related to these clips

ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, a physical sensation that can often be described as pleasant “tingles” or staticlike sensations that can be felt at the back of someone’s head and through their spine The response triggered by audio or visual stimuli brings forth a sense of calmness and relaxation to the viewer However, ASMR affects people differently and some may not even experience it at all Extensive research and data about it are still yet to be established to provide evidence and further understand ASMR If you are unfamiliar with the concept of ASMR you may find it nothing less than weird and the sensory response could even be uncomfortable for others Still, even if you love or hate it, many testimonies from people suffering from sleeping difficulties

Whether it be your impromptu 4-hour catch-up calls with your best friends, bingewatching your favorite Netflix shows, participating in late-night conversations with a potential love interest, or as common as the dilemma of studying 200-pages worth of coverage for a major examination these variables have contributed as obstacles towards our redemption of our long-lost friend: sleep With that said, with our hectic days filled with an unending number of responsibilities, meetings, requirements, and other commitments one after the other, a pleasant night of sleep had become more like a luxury than a necessity

It goes without saying that acquiring an adequate amount of sleep is a bare necessity Your concentration mood and even motor abilities would suffer if you went even one day without sleep Furthermore, should we continue to not suffice the quantity of sleep that our body requires, worse comes to worst this could ultimately result in death Accordingly, most are very much aware that sleep is a vital component of our lives Nonetheless many of us still end up depriving ourselves of sleep, willingly or not Numerous biological processes are thought to take place while we sleep, including the brain's storing of new information and elimination of toxic wastes, nerve cells' communication and reorganization, which supports normal brain function, and the body's cell repair energy restoration and release of molecules like hormones and proteins With that being said, here are evidence-based tips that are helpful in acclaiming that good-night sleep, and sweet dreams we all yearn and miss

Maintain a comfortable environment. Sometimes, even the slightest disruption such as a change in lighting, temperature, or even movement in sleeping position could hinder us from attaining a deep sleep Your brain receives a strong signal that it is time to wind down and let go of the day's tensions from a relaxing nighttime ritual Keep in mind your bedroom is as cozy as you can make it Ideal conditions include a calm, dark, and chilly setting These all aid in the start of sleep

Ditch Your Phone!

Believe it or not, not even a reply from your crush is worth waiting to sacrifice your goodnight sleep for According to studies, screen time for two or more hours in the evening can significantly impair the melatonin spike required for sleep The thought of shutting off all electronic gadgets at least an hour before bed can greatly influence the acceleration of our sleep

You won’t remember all my caffeine problems

Ironic as it may sound caffeine problems are more prevalent and sometimes unsolvable than what Taylor Swift would write a song about, “champagne problems” Perhaps, your daily 3-cup habit of caffeine hasn’t been working so much in your favor anymore and has caused your sleepless nights quandary While a single dose of caffeine might improve attention energy and athletic performance, late-day use of the substance can stimulate the nervous system and prevent the body from properly resting at night Therefore, a reduction of caffeine consumption especially during the later hours

of the day would be exceedingly relevant in correcting our restless nights

Peaceful mind for a peaceful night

Although it is a real challenge to cross the finish line reaching that glorious sleep when racing thoughts and anxiety gets in the way, we should not gamble our chances of freeing our minds and redeeming rest from chasing late-night reflections, thinking about the whatifs, or what could ve been It may be easier to fall asleep at night if you take measures to control your overall stress levels and learn how to quit worrying Creating a peaceful nighttime routine may also aid in getting your mind ready for sleep because a peaceful mind promises a peaceful night

Sleep is a vital function that lets your body and mind rest so that you may wake up feeling refreshed and sharp Healthy sleep is also important for keeping the body disease-free and optimally functioning The brain cannot operate effectively without enough sleep Your capacity to focus think clearly and process memories may all be hampered by this So now more than ever, most especially since the holidays are approaching, let us make use of this meaningful time to redeem and rekindle connections with our long, lost, (but never unremembered) friend: sleep

and anxiety reported great relief from ASMR, soothing them both mentally and physically, especially during downtime or bedtime The effects of ASMR go beyond the pleasant physiological feelings It can even go as far as a synesthetic sensation that induces relief

(though now slowly making its way into the mainstream) community can have such a broad genre of this particular form of videos Though the ASMR community has been around for a while with the earliest videos to be found on YouTube dating as early as 2009, posted by WhisperingLifeASMR, it has only recently been widely recognized This was especially apparent during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 when almost everyone seems to feel restless and it seemed that sensory videos online became a reliable source of solace

seeking relief and intervention for insomnia, anxiety or stress As more research about this phenomenon is carried out, we may learn more about its benefits that go way beyond simple relaxation

Peculiar as it may seem, the content of people tapping on wooden items or whispering words repetitively into microphones shaped like mannequin heads will bring about such a vast and diverse section in a small corner of the internet If you try to look up ASMR, especially on YouTube, you will be welcomed by countless of artists (also called ASMRtists) that offer extensive varieties of content exploring different triggers There is the basic scratching or tapping videos roleplays that offer a semblance of care and companionship to whoever views them or mukbang ASMR videos to whoever finds relaxation in seeing and hearing people consume food

If you are a stranger to ASMR take this article as a sign to try and dip your toes into it Who knows, maybe you’ll find a new comrade for comfort? Now, more than ever is the perfect time to indulge in ASMR, with new videos and creative triggers popping up every once in a while, and a seemingly endless abundance of tingle-inducing content offered free for everyone Though we know quite little about it at the moment, who knows, maybe we will live to see the day that ASMR could be going as far as contributing to the dependable healthcare options for patients

10….9….8…

Raging storms, scorching heat, deadly landslides, intense droughts, and severe flooding these are things not foreign to the Philippines Thanks to the worsening climate change, the Filipinos get to be so familiar with them

7 6 5

“Is that the trend 'yan na 'yung climate change? Wala naman tayong ganyan noon Matagal na tayo nagbabantay ng bagyo, it s not that Hindi ganyan”, was the response we did not expect but got from the government Existing for decades, yet one man was left clueless Fearful enough, that man leads a country we call ours

4 3 2

Do we still even have time?

Climate change is one of the biggest and most urgent global problems that we have in the 21st century It affects multiple aspects of the world and not just the Philippines The changing climate affects the economy of each nation at large but it devastates the smallest units of the society which starts with us Ironically it is also us that caused the damage in the first place

Recent scientific studies have confirmed that the observed rise in greenhouse gas concentrations is still mainly from burning fossil fuels and changes in land use activities done by and for humans As a result, our actions bounce back to damage us in the form of extreme weather events, restraining economic activities, damaging infrastructure, and inducing deep social disruptions according to the World Bank Its extent is also deeply integrated with global patterns of inequality that target the poorest and most vulnerable people who bear the fruit of its impact

Just this year, the country has suffered the wrath of successive typhoons Who could forget Super Typhoon Karding that put the province under Signal no 4 and some areas Signal no 5 even? These typhoons did not just raise fear among Filipinos but they also caused massive damages especially on agriculture In turn, these damages played an important role in the highest-ever inflation rate we have recorded in 14 years

Apart from agriculture many residential areas were flooded and mind you we are not talking about ankle-deep floods but waist deep

even house- burying floods brought about by the recent typhoons Livelihood is affected, transportation and communication were momentarily disrupted Thousands were homeless for some time Hungry and desperate Filipinos were fully dependent on relief operations, not forgetting to mention that we are still in the pandemic amidst all this

The climate situation in the Philippines and even in the world seems to be a ticking time bomb now It just continues to worsen every single second we waste time It continues to approach its explosive end as we stand and do nothing to diffuse it In an attempt to disarm this bomb the call is not just addressed to individuals but to governments all around the world, and especially in the Philippines While it takes responsible and disciplined citizens to minimize pollution and ease the wrath of climate change, governments are in it for a bigger task and a crucial responsibility The issues on sustainable development, poverty, disaster preparedness industry renewable sources of energy and preservation of natural resources are all for the government to start

addressing These are bigger social issues that throwing your trash in the proper bin cannot solve Greater and more extensive efforts coming from leaders should be invested in order to prolong the life of humanity and the viability of this planet for human existence

Akin to an apocalyptic movie, streets that were once lifeless and empty are now being revitalized by humanity Schools that were forced to close have regained the youthful energy of students who are all eager to go back to face-to-face classes Malls and parks are now filled with children running and playing things they were deprived of during the peak of COVID-19 cases Churches are finally back welcoming people after years of purely online devotions With everything seemingly going back to ‘normal’, we cannot help but ask, is the pandemic finally ending soon?

“We are not there yet But the end is near in sight” straightforwardly said by the World Health Organization (WHO) chief in September 14 2022 We may not be totally over with the pandemic given that there are still thousands of active cases in the Philippines and millions in the world but we are definitely going there Cases are relatively milder and deaths due to COVID are significantly lesser than before It may be thanks to the vaccines and booster shots that millions of people fortunately received in the past two years

The experts have warned however, not to be complacent and take the case of the Omicron variant as a lesson Though the COVID situation presents a downward trend, as the saying goes, it s not over til it s over New variants may come out of nowhere and infect millions again, but we are all fingers crossed that this won’t happen It is also for this ultimate reason that precautions must be continuously taken Masks should still be worn, though the current government believed otherwise Disinfecting fomites and places especially those that are inevitably crowded most of the times must continue or be even more heightened as people start to go out of their houses, risking themselves more of infection Ultimately, booster shots must continue especially for those vulnerable age groups so an added layer of protection against the invisible yet deadly foe can be guaranteed.

Within the past two years of distasteful memories, shattered dreams, and disheartening losses, everybody surely just wants to get over the pandemic era Valid enough, most feel frustrated and desperate for not just a sliver of hope that neutralizes the gray conditions brought about by the said virus but also a guarantee of an exit While we cannot force an exit from this dungeon we never intended to enter, we can only do our best to keep our selves safe until that time comes when finally, we see the end of the tunnel the vision of hope that has turned into a moment of reality.
